Rocky Is Headed To Broadway

After opening in Germany last year, the musical Rocky has finally been given a shot on Broadway. It is moving into the space formerly occupied by Mamma Mia which is moving to smaller quarters because everyone who has ever wanted to see that show has already seen it and now they are all just watching the movie version. I think that is what kills a lot of shows. They make some kind of movie version and then there is no need to go see the stage version again. Pretty sure that will happen when Wicked finally gets made into a movie. Anyway, apparently everyone in Germany loves Rocky as a musical and the songs are supposed to be great. I mean look at the song titles, how could they not be.

"Yo"
"Rocky"
"Apollo"
"Adrienne"
"Duh"
"Umm"

  1. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life.

  2. ...Other than the original "Rocky" screenplay read aloud, right Chris. Cruz?

Stallone casting his marble-mouthed self just made the screenplay SEEM better. People heard what they wanted out of his mouth.

  3. Wasn't Carrie also turned into a musical?

  4. Not everything should be made into a play FFS, it doesn't suddenly make Rocky a classy masterpiece because its on Broadway!

  7. Speaking of Broadway, my wild guess for the identity of jayjay, the mystery actor who posted the other day, is Matthew Broaderick. Used clues from his post: NY-based, started on Broadway, was discovered there for first movie, still goes back and forth between Broadway and movies. I don't want/expect him to confirm. There are other actors/actresses and their SOs who read this site regularly and post, but since they are friends, not "outing" them. I chuckle when they are called trolls, though.

  8. I cod see this being big, especially if they do eye of a tigerrrrrrr rawr lol!

I grew up on movies like rocky, lethal weapons, and Beverly Hills cops. Idk I'd personally go see it.

    Rocky 2-4 not so much

  9. Apparently Eye of the Tiger is included, so I'm in!

In all seriousness, it's being helmed by proven Tony winners and just by the tagline of the poster, it's sticking to the love story theme, so it will probably be a winner. The reason it's a classic is because it's not really a movie about boxing.

  11. @ iknowpeople - Wild guess indeed. Not all actors are famous actors.

  12. i would rant and rave about nothing original ever being on Broadway, but that train already left the station years ago. I'm just waiting for them to do a Broadway play about a really good toothpaste commercial now.

Hey, that commercial where the little girl was saying fast is better because if not, you could turn into a Werewolf and be sad cuz you have to stay inside and be shaved cuz it's hot... that was gripping and had a lot of emotion. Cinema Verite! Let's make that into a Broadway play.

  13. I was watching a documentary on the 80's earlier and it mentioned Rambo's impact on that decade. I still have never seen it or any Rocky movie.

  14. Lelaina, Rambo did have a huge impact on the 80's. That along with Reagan in the White House, the re-release of GI Joe to a new generation (seriously when I was in ROTC one of the recruiters told us a stat that around 80% of the people that had joined since the late 80's had joined because they wanted to be GI Joe. One of the reasons Reagan overturned the commercial ruling so that they could have cartoons like GI Joe, Transformers, Jem, etc.)

Then you look at what was popular at the time, WWF with Hulk Hogan, Top Gun. The 80's were a time of American Pride. We wouldn't have had a 9/11 in the 80's because they knew we'd turn their deserts to glass.

  15. ^Interesting! Some of that was covered in the doc series, esp the Reagan mentions. It all makes sense, now, for sure. I was only 3 when Rambo came out, but if I knew it would have had an impact on Jem & The Holograms, I might have paid a little more attention. ;-)
