Emma Watson Is Not The Star Of The Bling Ring
Emma Watson is in the new Sofia Coppola movie, The Bling Ring,. That is the movie that was made which chronicles the group of people who robbed celebrity homes. I'm sure it will be more exciting than the actual news stories were which were pretty lame. Anyway, the marketing for the movie would lead one to believe that Emma Watson is the big star of the movie and that she will dominate the screen and you really should go see it if you want to see her in something other than Harry Potter. The thing is, Emma is only like 3rd or 4th billed in the movie and does not have much screen time. Being the honest soul she is, she went to Twitter to remind everyone of that fact and not to be fooled by the marketing. I bet the studio was not thrilled with that.

ReplyDeleteI'll also say that, after watching this trailer, I think this movie is going to be dryly hilarious, and a lot of people won't get it.
I already read one review from some guy who saw a screening and complained it was poorly written, because none of the characters seemed to have any depth. Geez, it's not like the whole point of this movie is that it's about shallow people engaged in shallow pursuits for shallow reasons or anything!
I have a serious girl crush on this lady. Serious.

I'm so pleased that after having such enormous success so young she (and the others) are just quietly getting on with life post-Potter without any drunken drug-fuelled rampages or 'leaked' sex tapes or klepto incidents. Just well-adjusted young actors. So unusual.
ReplyDeleteWell, not really. The UK does a better job of not exposing the things behind the scenes with actors that are beloved by the public, than the US. There's some There's over given. But, Watson has been ok. Some pretty wild partying, but not too out of control, doing well adjusting to adult roles.

ReplyDeleteDon't crucify me for this, but she seems bratty or spoiled behind all the sweetness. She knows how much everyone adores her so she uses it to get her way. Maybe I'm just jealous or something, but that's my opinion.

DeleteI watched the opening moments a few times. It is either a hot pair of panties over granny panties or inside of a granny panty tanline.

ReplyDelete@Eve - I think that's what bothers me most - the fact that such respectable people are involved in something that will only give more fame to these bratty entitled assholes who don't deserve it. To me, it would be like Sofia Coppola doing a movie about Kim Kardashian, starring Anne Hathaway.

ReplyDeleteI love how they targeted Paris Hilton first by sitting around pondering the question, "Which celebrity is a big enough dumbass to leave the door open."
No doubt, I think the crimes are vile and the girl who ran the whole thing is pretty much a crazy stalker, but I think the story is such a sign of our times. Hopefully this movie is interesting.

Delete@Cathy - I'm wondering what kind of take on it they do. I agree these people are getting fame which is exactly they want. I wonder if it sheds them in a good light or a poor light. Not that I'll ever waste my time seeing it. I was mad when the one girl got a reality show on E. This is just as bad to me.

@Susan, I'm not sure that the movie will try to do that at all! I was reading the trailer along the lines of Spring Breakers : people get insanely stupid about a certain lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say it glorifies them. It show us who these teens are. They were entitled, farmers hungry, drug addled teens. I'm sure Coppola will show each moment of asshole behavior, because they all were pretty much asshole (like a lot of teens can be).
ReplyDeleteIt will also show our obsession with celebrity, and how many in society are vying for their in the place in the sun, even if being recognized is for crime.

ReplyDeleteShe just does not impress me at all. And out of everyone in Harry Potter (besides the girl that played Ginny Weasley)...I thought she was the worst actress.
The person Watson plays had a reality show, showcasing her family. The mother doled out adderall like it was candy. She had no handle on her kids, would party with them, and then make millions of excuses for their actions. I'm glad the movie will get a glimpse of the home life.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, out of all of the girls on that show, Alexis (Watsons character) turned out the most normal. I believe she is married, has a kid, and is a drug counselor now.
Just watching the trailer, it's clear that this movie isn't glorifying these kids, unless you feel that "Beavis and Butthead" glorified its subjects.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I see, the movie is holding these vapid, vacuous, shallow, moronic kids up to public ridicule in a way that would seem almost mean -- like laughing at Special Olympians -- if they weren't symptomatic of an illness oozing through our culture, where we're more interested in who Lindsay Lohan is schtupping or what Paris Hilton is wearing than how many people in the country are starving, how willing we are to surrender our civil rights or even why anyone not directly related to them knows the name "Kardashian."
I looked at the "I hate Emma Watson" web site and was disturbed. I'm no shrinking violet, maybe its just my mood. I know there are hundreds of "I hate this person Ive never met" blogs. One of them was very popular for a while even. For some reason this one really got me.

ReplyDelete@JAS - I agree that it doesn't glorify them, but these are people who are of the mindset that any type of fame/attention is good. So even if they're portrayed as vapid, entitled brats, it's still giving them what they wanted.

ReplyDeleteThe reason I thought it may not be fully negative is because I recently read where Coppola said they are a product of our reality TV culture. I took it to mean that might be propped up as an excuse. To me, that's as stupid as the "my kid killed someone because they listened to Judas Priest" arguments from the '80s.
