Even though I think it's a good thing, I'm still feeling some growing pains because I'm not used to the ban yet.
But what's more irritating than my inability to keep reusable bags in my car is that our legislature thinks that trying to get rid of Austin's bag ban is a good use of their time. Because spending time on that issue is way more important than education or the budget. SMH
100% agree! I grew up in a small town with a paper mill. I remember when they started switching from paper to plastic. We always had to say paper!!!! Now look what they've done. Should have left it alone.
In San Francisco, there's a ban on plastic bags w/r/t to grocery stores. The city recently introduced a 10-cent per paper bag charge, which wouldn't bother me except that extra charge goes to the store, not to any recycling program (or even the city's general fund). In any event, I've been using reusable canvas bags for last couple years for groceries.
When I get paper bags, I reuse them as receptacles for recyclables.
Plastic as you need the handles when you're walking to the store and back to carry, plus then we re-use it for the kitchen garbage can under the sink!Some stores charge us for plastic bags here though so we're careful to only go to the ones that don't as we refuse to pay for bags!
Plastic ban here in Portland. Even the dollar store uses paper now! But I have a zillion reusable Trader Joes and Fred Meyer bags .. Many of times I forget so I have to by a new one ( or three ) hence the zillion bags. Someday I'll remember to store them in the car trunk.
I live in Portland too. I have probably 15 reusable bags of varying sizes. I am pretty good about remembering my bags and making sure I have some in the car at all times. I'm crazy green though so its been many years, in the beginning I always forgot them in the house after emptying... Also: quicktip! Remember to wash your reusable bagsregularlly! They are full of bacteria!:)

@Alicia. LOL! How many take you up on it? One of my college roommates was a cocktail waitress and it used to amaze us how stupid guys could get depending on what she wore to work that day (we also tracked outfits to calculate what earned her the best tips. Skin=Good. Too much skin=Bad.)
BTW I HATE those plastic bags and my mum in law wraps everything in them. Then she can't remember what it is in the freezer and it just gets tossed. No biggie cuz it's usually just the heel of an old loaf of bread.

I try to bring my big tote but if i don't plastic and double bagged. Need the handles to cross the streets with two toddlers. Not only do i need to keep the babies from running into traffic but crawling around when your bag snaps to look for your stuff gets you banned from the bus. I swear I was not groping that homeless man, my vitamins fell near his feet!

When I shop at Aldi, I don't use any bags. I just throw everything in the trunk. No big deal. If I'm shopping at Meijer, I get plastic because their paper bags are so thin and worthless. I reuse them for bathroom trashcan liners, and cat/dog poop. My husband packs his lunch in them, too. We get a good amount of use out of them.

Bring my own canvas jobs. Sometimes if i firget i ger plastic for trash liners, and i recycke the plastic bags as well. Very rarely get paper, they dont look very cimposty at all.

LLBean Boat & Tote canvas bags with the zipper tops. I have at least 4 different sizes and they last forever. They also fit perfectly into those baskets on the back of my bike. I also have a few raggedy reusables on standby at work and a really crusty one in my laptop bag. Yeah, those things need to be washed or replaced. Nasty.
in australia, they haven't banned the plastic bag yet - which is good because i use them for the rubbish bin.
but a lot of people use the ubitiquious green bag - it can be other colours. they are hilarious and everywhere, including all over the place as rubbish, just like plastic bags. junkies use them as handbags. not just for shopping anymore, kansas.
i have a deluxe granny trolley which also fits a case of beer. my boyfriend refuses to use that though
I must have 20 reusable Publix canvas bags because I forgot the ones I had already bought for a couple of big weekly shopping trips. You can pack so much more into just a few of those bags than you can in plastic bags. And I only take one trip from the car to the house with groceries - it's much harder to carry 10 plastic bags vs 3 - 4 canvas bags at one time :) That being said, for a trip for just a few items, I get plastic - I use them for scooping cat litter and as liners for my small garbage cans.
Reusable. Almost always. I made a vow to myself that if I forgot my bags I had to carry my stuff out individually with no bags. Do that a few times and you stop forgetting. I'm more lax now that I have the babies. We reuse the plastic bags to collect the pulp from the juicer (easy clean up) and the bathroom trash bags
Plastic, and I could never live anywhere where there's a plastic bag ban. First off, I use plastic bags for my trash so I can fill one up per day and dump each bag (tied up, natch) into the outdoor trash bin at the end of the day. That way the trash doesn't stink up my kitchen like how it used to when I used to buy trash bags. Secondly, I find plastic bags a whole lot easier to deal with than any other kind. I tried using reusable cloth bags exactly once, and when I found that the baggers always stuffed those bags until they couldn't hold anything else and realized I could barely even hold onto one bag because of it (I have chronic nerve pain issues on my arms), that was the last time I ever attempted that. BTW, I don't use all the plastic bags I get; I find that I usually stick with Walmart's or Walgreens' bags for my trash because they're sturdy enough, and every other bag I deposit into the recycling bin (except if it's been used to carry milk, which I just throw away). And thankfully my municipality is one that uses an advanced enough recycling program to where they CAN and DO recycle plastic bags.
