I've never been able to solve a Rubik cube either...the closest I ever got was one time as a kid I pulled my version of the Kobayshi Maru maneuver by peeling all the stickers off!
It's actually not superhard to solve a traditional Rubik's cube once you have the solving algorithm memorized (you can google it). That's why so much of the competition in solving is done timed or blind.
