Matt Lauer Has A May Deadline To Boost Today's Ratings - Ryan Seacrest In The Wings

Today Show executives have privately decided that Matt Lauer has until the end of the May sweeps to boost the ratings of the Today Show or he will be replaced. Each day the numbers get worse and as bad as primetime has been for the network they always used to be able to count on Today to at least provide a bright spot. Now they have nothing. If the numbers don't dramatically rise, then Ryan Seacrest is on the top of the short list to replace Matt. They think Ryan will bring in a fresh audience while also hanging on to what is watching the show now.

  1. Well, at least they wouldn't have to worry about Ryan sleeping with all the ladies of the show...

  2. @Cathy that is spot on. NBC should really evaluate their entire line-up.
Reality tv maybe cheap to produce, but it can't save a network

  3. Has anyone seen the picture of Seacrest when he was in HS? He was chubby and had glasses and looked so nerdy and I'm not trying being rude, but that picture makes me so happy because he looked so happy in it. I wouldn't mind watching him every morning. He's annoying but a professional. Plus, he won't sleep with everyone!

    1. He has saud he knows he was a nerd, but knew what he wanted to do and workrf hard to get there and didnt care what anyone else thought.

  4. I guess will be saying Where in the World Is Matt Lauer a lot sooner.

  5. Why is Ryan Seacrest the front runner for everything? I don't think anyone gets that we're sick of him too.

GMA all the way for me.

  6. Noo.. Complete snooze to watch Ryan. Blech.. Ryan Seacrest needs to come to terms with being gay/bi.

  7. I think Ryan needs to stick to hosting things, not run a talk show. He's got that theatrical host-y delivery thing going on, and it just doesn't ever come off as genuine. That being said, if he's what gets Matt Lauer to go away then I'm all for it.

  8. Really, are there *no* other options besides Seacrest? I find that hard to believe.

  9. Comcast is trying to turn NBC into E!, why bother running a real broadcast network when you can sink it to the levels of the K family.

  10. And Anne Curry gets the last laugh. Love it.

  11. I can't see getting real news from Seacrest. The same guy who asks "who are you wearing" on the red carpet also interviewing world leaders? I'm not sure. Maybe he'll do a good job though. Who knows?

  12. I've never liked the Today Show. Most of the anchors on it annoyed me. I don't usually watch these shows, but when I do, I watch GMA. I like them better.

  13. I feel like Seacrest is the real life Michael Keaton character from Multiplicity. He has to have like 5 copies of a copy to keep up with all he does. Like him or not he knows how to work.

  14. I can't see Seacrest doing real news either, I like what he does now. I love Seacrest though and I feel like I will grow old with him (we're same age-ish) and he works HARD.

Mucho respect even if he did bring us the Kardashians.

  15. Oh and Lauer is a douche.

  16. How does he have time to do today? He has to sleep sometime.

I'd watch Seacrest I admire his work ethic.

Not a fan of Matt. He has been exposed for his cheating back stabbing ways. Agree he should go but don't agree with Seacrest.

I don't ever get to watch today but have seen Kathie Lee and Hoda a few times when home from work. Those ladies are crazy! Love them!

There's a guy that does weekends and fills in sometimes I think he's an ESPN guy hed be a much better replacement than Secrest.

  20. Ryan Seacrest is a workaholic. I say give him a chance. People love to tease him, but as far as I know, he's not a jerk to anyone. That's better than most people in the entertainment business.

Willie Giest. That's who I was thinking of I like him.

I'm a big fan of Willie Giest, I still watch Today because its what I'm used to. I switched from GMA after Charlie and then Diane left. I do like Robin Roberts. Willie is usually one of the co-host for the third hour of the show.

  22. I'm assuming that he will do the hosting and light entertainment while a reporter does the hard news and serious interviews. It could work.

I haven't watched the Today show in years. When my son was a baby, he would take his morning nap as soon as he heard Matt's voice.

  23. He's going down...but I don't know what they expect to gain from Howdy Doody

  24. I don't watch news in the morning, but I'd prefer just about anyone to Matt Lauer. Ryan Seacrest is everywhere and I'm tired of him, but he's super professional and might surprise everyone and be great at it. He works hard at everything, so if I was going to tune in to one of the programs, I'd see what he was up to.

  25. Willie ftw..Just want Lauer gone. He's so overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's not just Matt Lauer that is failing. It's the whole network. They are in 5th place behind Univision.

    ReplyDelete
  27. They need to have Lester take over from the weekend show. If NBC puts Seacrest on the Today show it will be off the air within a year. Wake up network execs, no one likes Seacrest! I say 4 hours of KLG & Hoda.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @me - there is an entire story arc on the underappreciated Studio 60 about just that...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I hope they give Matt's job to Willie Giest.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yea but would Ryan say yes? How many jobs does that guy have!?

    ReplyDelete
  31. My vote is for Greg Kelly. Love him!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have so much more respect for Ryan Seacrest after watching Kristin Chenoweth try interviewing people on the red carpet on ABC's Oscar coverage. Thank goodness for the mute button. She was beyond awful.

Would they move the show to Los Angeles? He would have to wake up at 1:00 AM every day for a west coast broadcast. Sounds like one of the worst gigs in showbiz. Do a syndicated morning show & you can tape it the afternoon before.

  33. yes, Anne gets last laugh, excellent! Could never stand him, dont care about him, hope he gets canned, just so he can see what its like to be screwed over. Ryan is total professional, in his field. This wld be perfect fit for him. now, havin said all that, I dont watch daytime tv lol

  34. I think Willy Geist should replace Matt Lauer. He is smart, funny, witty, quick on his feet, and down to earth.

  35. David Gregory would be a much better replacement than Ryan Seacrest...

    ReplyDelete
  36. @norarose - Greg Kelly would be fabulous! Joel McHale would never run out of material!

  37. I want someone smarter than Ryan on Today. I liked Meredith and would love Anderson Cooper. I don't think he'd do it, but I'd love it if he did!

    ReplyDelete

    1. ITA Anderson would be great. He's been very unapologetic about being interested in serious world news as well as popular culture and I think he'd do a great job striking the right balance between the two. And he's hot. :)

  38. I can't stand Laurer or Seacrest. Def on board with Willie Geist though. They should get rid of savannah while they're at it. She doesn't bring much to the table. To be different, what about Giuliana Rancic on the today show? She's great on E! I know some dislike her, but her bitchiness to Seacrest on E! News sealed my approval/liking of her. She's actually a very talented anchor.

  39. I read about NBC's struggles and remember that they have a great show like Southland once, which is now going into its 5th season on TNT, and they got rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Seacrest? On what planet does he have any experience with REAL news topics? Interviewing Beyonce sure. The new Pope? Don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  41. On what planet is a network morning show considered real news? Even the all news cable networks abandoned real news when they found obnoxious opninion mongers bring in more revenue. The real news ship sailed the moment Fox News started beating CNN in the ratings.

ryan has sold his soul to the devil. His comeup is unexplainable. i will say he is likeable. they had him on the mani cam at the oscars...MANI CAM lmfao! stabstabstab

  43. Every year on 9/11, MSNBC plays the first 4 hours of the original Today Show on that day. Matt Lauer (and I'm definitely not a fan) did a credible job that morning handling the horrific news as it came in. Seriously, can you imagine Ryan Seacrest handling something like that? Now if Cooper got the job, I'd definitely watch. He can handle the gravitas AND the nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I vote for Lester Holt!

    ReplyDelete
  45. If Seacrest leaves Idol, they're screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lester Holt or David Gregory

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like Ryan, but I can't see him doing any serious news reporting.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I like lester holt too!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Does anyone remember when Ryan actually had his own talk show? It was the summer of 2004. I can't find a single person who remembers it, and I'm starting to think I imagined it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Really? Ryan Seacrest?!

    ReplyDelete
  51. If you think the Today Show is tanking now, just wait until Seacreast brings on Kris Jenner as a weekly guest host. Plus, he already has enough lame shows on TV and makes enough money. Ugh--there couldn't possibly be a worse choice.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Willie Geist is the best! I first saw him during the 2010 Olympics coverage... he also did "Way Too Early" which was hilarious. News, but he'd get people to e-mail and give their crazy stories on why they're the hell awake at this ungodly hour.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I would rather see Willie Giest or Lester Holt--either one of them are solid at interviews and extremely likeable.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anderson is a brilliant idea--his talk show is cancelled and I think I read that they are taking his night time 360 show off --that leaves him his reporting for CNN and his 60 Minutes gig.

He is extremely funny and likeable and he can do the hard stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  55. There aren't any respectable journalists left.

    ReplyDelete
  56. GMA has such a great, likable group on it right now. I just don't think Lauer or Seacrest stands a chance against them. GMA comes across as a warm, loving family (whether it is behind the scenes or not) and I'm sure that's why their ratings keep rising.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I have to say- as swarm as Matt Lauer is- what made me stop tuning in years ago is when they stopped reporting any real news and the show consisted of 99% fluff pieces. They can change the host- and maybe get a new set of kids to watch. But if they want to regain viewers they may have to show some actual news.
