Manti teo
Yeah, the part about "no more lies" sounds like Teo.
I hope it is Tebow! I am so sick of watching his hypocrisy.
Mantis te'o. He might pursue a relationship with ronaia.
Or the honey badger
Well good for him. Too many closet cases in pro sports. Leave the homophobia to the older generation, please.
Teo. I hope he serves as a role model to closeted kids in the Mormon church to feel comfortable being who they are, despite what their religion teaches
Whoa! Mante? Really?
It's not Te'o. His family is so religious that if he came out as gay there stands a good chance they'd disown him.
@Lotta - Enty gets zero credit. There is a story over at NFL.com about a player considering coming out in the offseason. Te'o is the obvious choice.
The CBS Sports story also mentioned that it is a current NFL player, so not anyone out of the draft.
Whoever it is, good for them!
Why should Enty get credit for this blind? It was reported on pretty much all news outlets yesterday that a current NFL player is considering coming out. Enty is just implying it's Teo, but it could be about any NFL player.
no credit for Enty,it is in NFL
a friend just tweeted me the news
Whomever it is I applaud them for their bravery. Silly that people seem to think being gay means you can't be a strong and capable athlete. Or a good teacher or a religious leader, etc.
He's not hypocritical...he and his family have devoted their life to their work and his Tim Tebow foundation raises millions for orphans and kids battling life threatening diseases...carry on...
Lucas, I didn't mean the national media, more like perez who is always stealing his shit.
Jay Cutler.
A rookies wouldn't come out after the draft because he still needs to negotiate his contract and this will kill that. Tebows career isn't secure enough for him to stop lying right now. Its someone else. I would expect it to be someone close to NYC for the media coverage.
Definitely not Teo - he's hasn't been drafted yet and the articles I've read about it make it seem like it's an established player who already has a fan base.
Here's another article:
Active NFL player preparing to reveal he is gay
the day when this isn't news- is right around the corner!
Whoever he is, I wish him much courage and strength, 'cause if the comments after some of the articles I read about this are any indication, he's in for a pretty hostile reaction from a lot of people.
I just don't get the hate...and the idea that a parent would disown a child for being gay or lesbian? Horrific. Both of my kids know their Dad and I could care less if they're gay, straight, or asexual - all we ask is that they lead responsible, caring lives and contribute in some way to making their little corner of the world a better place.
kordel stewart
It doesn't have to a player in the draft. Probably someone at end or near end of career that wants to up his Q rating.
I agree, ellehpee. The thing that gives me hope is that so many of us are raising our children with a different mindset that this will not be an issue in the next generation. It puts me very much in mind of the race issues in the 50s and 60s. I grew up in the 70s and 80s with parents who taught me better about race (and things like being gay, etc.) and I (and my six siblings) pass that on to my child, who will pass it on to hers.
Terrell Owens maybe
This will not be easy. I hope whoever it is has support from his team and the front office -- they will make all the difference, I think.
Am I correct that this would be the first, active, professional athlete to come out?
@ NomNom83 That would be Greg Louganis. Although he was pretty much forced out after his diving accident.
History lesson for the young 'uns. Back in the day Greg was a famous diver. During an Olympic game Greg hit his head on the diving board. Greg is HIV+. They stopped the diving competition because they needed to see if other people diving would get infected if they went in the water. This was way back when people were ignorant about HIV. So Greg did come out of the closet. Although he was pretty much forced to.
All this Georgia Bulldog can think is "please be Tebow, please be Tebow, please be Tebow" while I imagine the millions of exploding heads in the bible belt. *insert evil laugh*
Is that bad?
Oh wait, it says top athlete. I'm pretty sure Tebow's a bottom in every sense of the word.
I kid...I kid...I'm sure he's a nice young man. Magnet. Nice young man magnet.
Ok, ok I'll stop.
@Michehelly, I agree, although sometimes it scares me how many people out there are raising their children to continue to discriminate against LGBT people. Just so sad. :(
The You Can Play organization does a great job of educating athletes about breaking down the barriers in sports, and I know they are ready and waiting to offer support to any athlete who decides to come out.
Mark Sanchez
Am I the only one who thinks it truly will no longer be a big deal when people stop having to "come out"? I kind of groan everytime I see anyone having this splashy "come out" pr event just because people don't need to do that if it truly doesn't matter. Does that make sense?
If it's Teo, it'd be a mistake. Being a first rounder already comes with a ton of pressure, and because of that GF stunt, even more so for him. He's going to have a bitch of a time dealing with the enormous spotlight that follows him around. Adding the novelty of being the first openly gay player would probably be far too much. His best bet would be to try and keep a low profile for a couple of seasons, and once he's blended in a bit, then he can come out.
I read on another site that an already established player is discussing coming out, not a draft prospect.
I'd say it is Teo. After the draft, and before the contract is signed would be a perfect time. Your first contract is in a tight range based on your draft position, so it won't cost him money. If the team should try to low ball him or refuse to sign him, he would have a GINORMOUS lawsuit on his hands.
re T-bo: Could be, but I doubt it. His NFL career will probably be over after the draft. If no one trades a low pick for him, the Jets will cut him and no one will pick him up. Not even CFL. Not because he's gay, but because he sucks as an NFL QB. Denver's light air and defense were all that run was about. Dilfer would have taken them further.
@ellehpee thanks for the info about the You Can Play organization. I never heard of that.
@count jerkula that is one of the reasons I think it may be Tebow. He has nothing to lose career-wise now. He can come out and then plead "I was born this way" and make a career out of that since his "jesus loves me" career is over.
Did you guys read that great article by Scott Fujita (of the Browns) in the New York Times? Nailed it. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/24/sports/football/scott-fujita-acceptance-by-example-in-locker-room-and-at-home.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
Mark Sanchez
Whomever this is, I hope it works out for him.
Yes that is bad! Bad Bulldog, bad!
Not Tebow. Straight as hell. Not Teo because he is not current. I'm betting Reggie Bush. Just because he doesn't like his last name. (BWAHAHAHAHAHA)Seriously, probably Braylon Edwards. he's a free agent, but still an active player. Hmmm. I wonder. French active or.....
Y'all stop saying it's TeBow! That ruins my future wedding plans with him!
>> cries uncontrollably into her number 15 Jersey while remembering the good old days when he played football like a Chosen One<<
Not Tebow. He's a man-whore, but he definitely prefers the ladies.
Not Teo.
He's so Mormon that he probably feels bad about imagining sex with a woman before marriage, much less a man.
@micehelly: He will have everything to lose career wise. W/o NFL money coming in, he will have to lean on those Florida boosters for business opportunities and work his charm for endorsements and speaking opportunities. Politics are even an opportunity, playing off the rabid fan base and the bible kooks. He could easily find himself a cute, asexual gold digger broad to cast as a wife.
Scuttlebutt on r/nfl says it's either
Vernon Davis
Larry Fitzgerald
RW Mcquarters
Could be Sanchez but i don't think he's in a position to come out. This person will need to be well liked and respected. That ain't Sanchez.
Whomever it is I will buy his jersey.
Micehelly said: "{Tebow's} 'jesus loves me' career"
Maybe it's Tebow, and Jesus is his secret boyfriend from South America!
That could be a different person as well since Enty says the NFL draft... Not a current player.
Why do people have to come out??? Why can't they live their life and see who they want without having to make a big deal out of it? It's nobody's business who you love.
IF it is not a draft pick then why wait till after the draft? IF it is going to happen as per this BI it is Teo
If it is Vern Davis, then it explains why Kapernick never threw him the ball and tanked my Fantasy Football season. I shoulda had a 3peat!
I agree it's sad this is still such a big deal. Every supporter should buy his jersey when he comes out. Great way to show support!
Because if you decide to start a family, or move in together, or get married, by a house, go to an event with/supporting your sicnificant other you are holding hands with youbwould have to be out, non? Just like the military.

Agree on Mark Sanchez.
This could very well be Kordell Stewart. He had that past incident being caught in a cruising park after hours, now he has filed for divorce from his Real Housewives Atlanta wife. Very interesting timing.
I'm gonna need a second opinion as my mama told me to never, ever trust a Gator (Tom Petty excluded) ;-)
I think it Brandon Ayanbadejo from the Ravens. In the Pre Super Bowl hype Terrell Suggs almost named him when asked how the locker room would react to a gay teammate. Suggs said more or less we know who you are and we support you.

Larry Fitzgerald always tripped my gaydar. It's not Sanchez or Tebow, they suck. Kordell Stewart wasnt good when he played in the NFL and T.O is too nuts ( and unsigned)
Your guesses are somewhat bad. For instance....
Current NFL player, so it's not Teo.
Cutler. You gotta be kidding. Spends much of his time looking for strange that isn't Kristin Cavillieri.
RW McQuarters: not a current NFL player.
Ayanbadejo--he gives off a gay vibe, no doubt, but he is married with children.

Female friend lived in his building and they regularly borrowed sugar from one another, if you know what I mean. Not him.
Agreed.
If we are talking retired - Troy Aikman.
Also Sanchez had a wide receiver or tight end on the Jets that was rumored to be his partner.
Not Ayabadejo. Come On! The guy is a hero to the LGBT community because he's married, with kids, and does the right thing because it's the right thing. If you don't follow him on Facebook, etc., you are missing out. He's amazing. So is Chris Klewe. Not Tebow! Everything about him is a canned attempt to appeal to the conservative masses and nothing is more important to him than his future in megachurch preaching. Unlikely it's Te'o either. In his mea culpa interviews he insisted he wasn't gay and wasn't involved in the hoax, so he'd be a liar about that too. If he's going to come out, it seems like it would be a lot further down the road. That said, I wish everyone in the NFL would "come out", gay or not, so that those that are gay don't feel worried or ashamed and we can all go back to not being a bunch of hillbillies. Who cares!!!!
If you read the article on nfl.com, it disputes almost all the guesses posted here. It's a CURRENT NFL player, which leaves out Manti and anyone else not yet drafted, and also leaves out Kordell Stewart, RW McQuarters, Terrell Owens, Troy Aikman, and in a few weeks, Tim Tebow. Tebow's NFL career is over, but even if he IS gay (which I doubt), he's got a lot of reasons to stay in the closet that have nothing to do with the NFL. Not him either way. The article does not outright say but strongly implies that the player is not married- it's not someone playing the beard game, just someone who's never revealed his private life. So not Ajabadejo- it would be pretty damn hypocritical of him to be as outspoken as he has been about gay rights while hiding his own gayness behind a wife. And if we're going to assert that the person in question is "well-respected" we can pretty much toss Sanchez and Fitzgerald, too. (Taking "well-respected" to mean not "solid player" but rather "admired by his peers as a solid person"). So Vernon Davis? Hope so, he plays for my favorite team, and is both a good player and well-liked,plus plays in a gay-friendly city.
Everything you wrote is pretty reasonable, except the fact that you say Larry Fitzgerald is not well respected. I'm not local to AZ so I may not know inside dirt on Larry, but in the interviews I hear every Super Bowl week with him and and this year w/ Arians, Larry seems to carry himself as a class act. Arians said when he was hired the first call he got was from Fitz. Larry hasn't spent the post Warner era throwin trash QBs under the bus as many of the diva wideouts would have.
Wow, a lot of assholery on this thread. Nothing in Enty's post does it say "current NFL player," so any athlete currently playing football/looking to be pro would be a valid guess, IMO. No need to get nasty.
This is not just an Enty blind. CBSSports.com broke the story on Monday. There are other articles out there you can get info from. Use the Google.
