Blind Item #6
This A list mostly movie actor spent the better part of two years drunk and on pills. He said it was research. It was in a way, but it was also an excuse for him to tune out his significant other and his child(ren) and the responsibilities which he has always hated. If it was up to him he would just live like his hero and people would come to him and pay their respects. When he was wasted for two years he actually told people that and they were fortunate to get to spend time with him and that they were seeing a living legend. Yeah, kind of like the Goopster except she rarely drinks, showers more and doesn't shoot off guns in the middle of houses.
First thought: Johnny Depp (hero would be Hunter S. Thompson)
ReplyDeleteOooh, good guess!
DeleteJohnny Depp as Hunter S. Thompson? That thought makes me a bit sad.
ReplyDeleteDepp is one of those actors that I really, really like as an actor but would not ever want to meet in person.
ReplyDelete+1 Izzie
ReplyDeleteDepp is a good guess, but for some reason he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who walks around bragging about himself. He also stopped filming a couple of years ago when his daughter was in the hospital didn't he? Also, Hunter was a writer for RS, yes? Would people normally walk up to him and 'pay their respects'? I have read every Dean Koontz book but I would probably pass him on the street and not even know who he was.
ReplyDeleteThe A thing is throwing me off because (and maybe it's due to me watching Heathers yesterday) I thought Christian Slater and Nicholson.
Wow... you really need to learn about Hunter S. Thompson. He was much more than just a writer for rolling stone.
DeleteMuch much more...
ABlake, Hunter S. Thompson was a genius and egomaniac in equal measure. He was also very recognizable figure.
DeleteI totally agree this is Depp/Thompson. To me, it's barely blind.
Nicolas Cage and his idol being Elvis
ReplyDeleteI thouggt this too! He swems like he would be arrogant enough to say that.
DeleteAgreed
DeleteThink u got it
DeleteI was gonna say, Amos, who's doing a movie on Elvis? That's our answer right there I believe.
ReplyDeleteDepp seems pretty far up his own ass.
ReplyDeleteHunter S. Thompson seems to have a cult following. I'm sure many would pay their respects to him. Isn't Depp the type who stays in character while filming? Thompson was a weird guy. It would make sense with Depp bragging, not bathing. Or he could've been drunk off his ass, and was just spouting off stupid shit about being a legend.
ReplyDeleteI like the Nic Cage/Elvis guess.
ReplyDelete"Pay respects" sounds like Mafia. If Brando were living, I'd guess Brando.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteRDJ
ReplyDeleteResearch for being Sherlock Holmes
ReplyDeleteWrong hero, Depp's mentor was Brando. Johnny bought an island too. The "respects" is the Godfather reference.
ReplyDeleteGuys of legendary status known to shoot off guns in their house: Ernest Hemingway, Hunter S. Thompson, Elvis, Steve McQueen... Not sure that Brando ever went that far, but the image of someone paying their respects certainly does seem like a Brando thing. I don't know that Jack would ever get into firearms either.
ReplyDeleteThompson certainly had his group of famous fanboys in a fringe kind of way, Depp being one of them.
Brando didn't but his son did....and killed his sister's baby daddy.
ReplyDeleteand then the sister killed herself.
ReplyDeleteand then Brando died and the son died. Everybody died unhappily ever after
ReplyDeletedefinetely Nick Cage. he's italian and he's always been obsessed with Elvis
ReplyDelete"Pay respect" like you would do for a dead legend (or a Godfather reference since Copolla is related to Nick. Doesn't like responsibility = tax dodging. Elvis famously shot his TV (presumably because he didn't like who was on it).
DeleteTo take this theory another step forward: Nick was married to Lisa Marie Presley...
DeleteNick Cage, Elvis and the Trespass movie?
ReplyDeleteDepp has already played Hunter S. Thompson. I met Hunter once on a plane. He was very sweet but completely out if it unless you didn't call him Dr. Then he reminded you.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, this is interesting (from wiki)
ReplyDelete" He was known also for his lifelong use of alcohol and illegal drugs; his love of firearms, and his iconoclastic contempt for authoritarianism, and remarked that, "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
While suffering a bout of health problems, Thompson committed suicide at the age of 67. As per his wishes, his ashes were fired out of a cannon in a ceremony funded by his friend, Johnny Depp, and attended by a host of friends including Senator John Kerry and the actor Jack Nicholson. Hari Kunzru wrote that, "the true voice of Thompson is revealed to be that of American moralist ... one who often makes himself ugly to expose the ugliness he sees around him."
I know Depp would be the obvious choice, but somehow Nic Cage strikes me as the answer. Remember, he got his Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas, in which he played a man who deliberately drank himself to death, and the blind doesn't say this all happened recently. I get the feeling that he's probably a nice enough fellow when he's sober, but when he's drunk he might well turn into a self-important braggart (as do so many other people, famous or not...); combine that w/doing "research" to play that kind of character, and the results may not have been pretty. At that time, IIRC he was married to Patricia Arquette (I think they broke up within a year of him winning his Oscar), and had the one son by a previous girlfriend, so there's that. It's sad no matter who it is, though...
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure he has a son with Arquette too. He is seriously playing Elvis in a film? My god.
ReplyDeleteAl Pacino because of the showering reference. He could have any pick of Italian heroes so lets choose Sinatra.
ReplyDeleteI am going to guess Sean Penn based on the past tense/long term relationship vibe I'm getting from this blind. Maybe, Hugo Chavez as his hero? I haven't googled a movie role that might fit here, but I can see him drinking like a fish and firing off guns even if he was preparing for the role of Mr. Rogers. It's just a guess.
ReplyDeleteI think Depp is the answer. Sean Penn is probably too much of a bed wetting liberal to have fun with guns.
ReplyDeleteI think the only book of Hunter's left to make a movie out of is Hell's Angels, if just for the biker/Merry Prankster fest at Owl Farm. I don't thing F&L On The Campaign Trail would work. Maybe a modern adaptation loosely based on it.
I was sad about Rum Diaries. Watched it once. Seemed too rushed and left out too much.
I wish I could get my hands on some ether.
Count - Ether makes me think of Blue Velvet and Dennis Hopper. Nothing to do with the blind. ITA with Depp/Thompson.
DeleteThis would make sense for when Depp was filming the Rum Diaries... It was during this time his relationship w/ Vanessa Paradise fell apart and he was being papped everywhere looking every inch of a hot mess.
ReplyDeleteWasn't there a blind one time about someone shooting his girlfriend in the house, and everyone thought it was Johnny Depp and Kate Moss?
ReplyDeleteI remember that blind, but most guessed Depp & Ryder.
DeleteThank you, Count Jerkula. That is an image that could stay with me all day. Sean Penn, Bed Wetter. I'm off to cleanse my brain palate by watching "Pugs taking a bath".
ReplyDeleteI've been here since day one, but I do not comment very often. Thanks to all the regulars who keep me entertained with your daily comments. You guys are a hoot!
Thanks for joining in Bren3776. This group is wonderful!
DeleteBrad Pitt?
ReplyDeleteGoop says she drinks two or three glasses of wine every night and if not wine has a martini. I wouldn't call that rarely drinking.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, when Johnny Depp was dating Kate Moss, he'd go on tears. I mean he was in the news headlines (before the Internet and TMZ) for absolutely trashing hotel rooms in famous NY hotels while drunk out of his mind. He came across very differently then, in the public eye, than he does now -- he's almost ... respectable now, especially given his movie legacy and how he's toned that part of it way down, at least publicly.
ReplyDeleteAl Pacino playng Phil Spector. Pacino was the Godfather. Is rumored not to shower. Phil shot Lana Clarkson in his house in 2003.
ReplyDeleteJohnny Paradis. He's been pretty shitty to Vanessa and their kids. Taking off with that bisexual heather/jennifer/amber? person. Swilling red wine, I'd believe pills are involved too. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a little blow mixed in there too. He's well known for his lack of hygiene, terrible teeth, and generally wildly eccentric behavior. He really is a living legend, his sweet vulnerable damaged goth persona has been good to him. the Jack sparrow character was solid gold, for him and disney. He's played his roles well, and has the private jets and millions to show for it, but what about his sanity, personal life, happiness, simplicity, gratitude? I'm guessing slim to none. Good luck with that Johnny. I think RDJ is a far better actor and could have done just as well if not better in those roles. I do wish he'd branch out a bit and take more risk. Not just popcorn, popcorn and more popcorn. We all know he can do ironman and sherlock in his sleep, backwards, but can he do say, Sparrow's brother convincingly? I just want to see him get in to that dark side a bit. It's got to be there. Isn't he bored?
ReplyDeleteMaybe he thinks that his dark role in "Less Than Zero" (which he nailed so he has nothing to prove in that respect) may have triggered his drug meltdown and wisely no longer feels the need to play those "edgy" roles again. Also, I am still not convinced Johhny D has ever been outrageously irresponsibly like Nick Cage has been.
DeleteSorry, have to disagree Topper. I don't think anyone wants to be Phil Spector. Did you see the court room hair and blouses?
ReplyDeleteVal Kilmer, legend was Jim Morrison? When he made The Doors he had a baby. And by most accounts he's a d-bag.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sherry!
ReplyDelete@Count - I was disappointed by Rum Diaries as well. Making Hell's Angels could be awesome, but it would have to be executed like Vegas was. When the Hell's Angels think HST is insane and dangerous, you know it's bad (or awesome).
ReplyDeleteI believe Depp moved in w/HST to study him. You don't get to live w/HST and be a Boy Scout. Christ, HST maced people at a Kentucky Derby party. This is Depp.
Depp - He was previously revealed to have accidently shot a girlfriend with a gun while drunk.
ReplyDelete@count and @amber. Agree about Run Diaires. It felt like half a movie but the book is one of my favorites. Terrible adaption.
ReplyDeleteI loved F&L on the campaign trail. Also the Great Shark Hunt. I think this blind is Depp with HST as the hero.
I would guess Christian bale
ReplyDeleteCharlie sheen
ReplyDeleteNever mind second @amos0924 Nic cage
ReplyDeleteGoddamnit, I really miss the good doctor. His commentary on Sarah Palin would have been legendary.
ReplyDeleteThis screams Al Pacino. Living Legend: Check. Paying their respects (Al Pacino played the Godfather): Check. Big Time Drinker: Check. Rumored not to shower too often (judging from some of the pictures I have seen of him, that is very easy to believe.) Check. Past blind vices where he is rumored to be very drunk and semi abusive: Check. Sad but I believe this is all Al Pacino
ReplyDeleteCharlie Sheen - he accidentally shot Kelly Preston years ago. Not sure who the legend would be, but he is crazy and narcissistic enough to think he is a legend.
ReplyDeleteI think F&L on the Campaign Trail could make an awesome movie - way better than what they did with Las Vegas... That was always one of my favorite HST books.
ReplyDeleteI got married in February of 2005 - we went to honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas. On our way back to NYC, our flight got stuck in Denver. Hunter killed himself that weekend. I kind of feel like I grew up with him, it really stung when he died. I am not sure why I shared that, but it has always bothered my that one of the happiest times of my life was interrupted by my sadness at the loss of Hunter. Sorry, Dr. Thompson.
Sorry but my so-called computer/linking skills suck. I thought i'd post a non-clicky link to an interview Kimmel had w/Depp, but i can't even give you a plain link to the segment.
ReplyDeleteI googled 'Johnny Depp Hunter Thompson 3 am ambush' and found the You Tube clip i wanted to link here for you.
In it, Depp states that Thompson and Brando were important to him, but the story he relates is about Thompson's inspired idea to 'ambush' Don Johnson after DJ calls to tell him he's going to drop by for a visit.
"We MUST ambush Johnson. Ohhh, OK...." Weapons are grabbed, positions taken and firing commences. Just another night in Aspen....If you want to hear it, it'll take about 4 minutes of your time.
Yes. Johnny Depp. I know for a fact that when he was filming in Vancouver for a few months, he was never sober and had specialty liquors and wines shipped from Europe. Also, he has sounded to me like that same slurring character in all of his films for the past 7 years, not just 2.
ReplyDeleteRobert Downy Jr.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like 99% of the actors/celebs in Hollywood are alcoholics, pill addicts or both.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteKLM he committed suicide on my birthday (2/20), I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteThis is Johnny Depp. He has a gun collection and he shot Winona in the side when they were dating and he almost killed her, while she was sitting naked on his couch in his house one time. She has a huge scar. It was a BV.
ReplyDelete...and of course Johnny Depp is arrogant. All celebs are. Of course it's gone to his head at this point. He's pampered and praised all day by everyone and given millions of dollars for his movies. He's given everything on a silver plate. Of course he feels entitled. Anyone would.
What about Joaqin Phoenix?
ReplyDeleteProbably Pacino since Enty posted a photo of him at the Phil Spector (aka shooter)premiere Friday, commenting that Al was doing better by his gf by showering. Pacino's idol is Shakespeare's King Richard III and he was in the Godfather (pay respects). He's estranged from the 2 women with whom he fathered 3 kids. No longer more than A list due to his age/type of roles due to age.
ReplyDeleteNot Depp: Enty always lists Depp as A+. Depp puts himself down, doesn't brag. He's been sober & parenting the kids alone since the split with VP.
I don't think this is Depp, but I do think HST was probably the worst thing to happen to him. Even Keef pales in comparison to the damage HST did. Your idol's blowing his head off is a little hard to recover from.
