Never ever leave a candle burning somewhere unattended. Ashley Greene learned that the hard way as her condo caught on fire yesterday when a candle caught a sofa on fire and burned her entire place down. One of her two dogs, died in the fire. At the time of the fire, Ashley and her boyfriend (presumably Ryan Phillippe, if not, then she also had some splainin' to do about that) were in bed together and her brother was in another bedroom. The two guys tried to get the dogs out, but one did die. Three people were injured in the fire.

ReplyDeleteThe whole business is just a damn shame, although the entire building must have been awfully flammable for it all to go up like that. Kind thoughts to everyone who was burned out, and here's hoping their insurance kicks in and takes care of everything ASAP, as least as far as their material possessions are concerned.
@Liz, I read elsewhere that the boyfriend wasn't Ryan Phillippe.

DeleteI've been in three fires involving candles. One was my fault when I was 20.. I woke up to my bed on fire. Scariest thing in the world. Never leave a candle unattended FOR REAL!!!

ReplyDeleteI'm terrified of fire. I've always had a feeling that I'm going to die in a fire. I had a small fire in my apartment in Ann Arbor, due to an unattended candle while sexing it up (sorry for TMI! LOL) but my then b/f got it under control. I lost some pictures, but my kitties were safe.
A couple of things makes me sick about this story. First, which Enty didn't mention, TMZ says when they woke up and realized the condo was on fire, they got and and she FORGOT her dogs were in there. The brother and bf tried to go back in to get them but it was too late, WHO forgets their dogs are in the house??

inside and found the dog. WHO takes pics of that, and WHO publishes them?? Disgusting.

She forgot her dog was in a burning building? Am I the only one that feels that pets are like children to their owner? I can't be the only one. I can't imagine leaving my dog, she'd be out before me.

ReplyDeleteI'm with everyone questioning leaving the dogs behind. This wasn't a mansion, it was a 2-bedroom apartment.Ymir like you're not sure if another person got them out. My dog is the FIRST thing I'd grab. Unfathomable to me. Still, sorry for her loss.
DeleteI read about this on Dlisted. Her brother and his friend did try to get the dog. Ive been in a fire and it messes with you for a long time. I really feel for them all.

The dog was under a bed. It is possible they looked for them, but got out as the fire got worse. Her boyfriend and brother may have gone in as a last ditch effort. I think it would depend on how bad the fire and smoke had gotten.

ReplyDeleteEh, as a teen I was home alone when a tornado went thru the neighborhood. I grabbed one cat who was on the couch. I called out for the other one, and looked as best I could, but eventually just went with the one kitty to the basement. I could hear the storm coming, and was scared to death. Luckily it hit the street next to us, and both kitties were perfectly fine.

Everyone with pets - please always leave their collars on!! Lots of people take them off at night but if there is a fire or emergency, it can be the only way to grab them if they're scared. It helps to save animals lives. /rant

She was not there.
They were going in and out of the condo all morning.
They woke up and the condo was engulfed in flames.
Maybe the dog who died was passed out from the smoke under a bed and that is why they could not find it.
And as for the injuries I read that some neighbors tried to help them put the fire out before the FD arrived. Also you can tell from the photos that the condo above has a lot of smoke damage.
Maybe those were the injuries.
Yeah, I'm not gonna judge about her dog w/o the whole story either. Sad.

there was a fire 630am in an apartment across the hall from me once. Scary thing having firemen whack on your door with big iron poles telling you to vacate. But first I got my kitty. he ran under the bed and i swore at him and got him out with a broom, grabbed his loveable behind and put him in his carrier that I always kept by the front door JIC.

ReplyDeleteI can't hate on anyone who has suffered a loss like this. Your home, your dog...devastating. I only hope insurance covers everyone's losses, but there will probably be lawsuits by the people who were hurt. Sad turn of events all the way around.
ReplyDeleteNot a huge fan of Ashley but would never pass judgment on someone in this sort of tragedy. TMZ is pretty disgusting for posting the pics & video of her grieving. From what I read, a pap went in to the building undercover with a hidden camera. Interesting thing. The dude in the pic looks like Jason Trawick who was also at the same club as Ashley and Ryan.

I have 2 cats and don't even leave the room when I have something burning. Not a candle, not insense not a bowl! I also have 4 smoke detectors that I make sure are juiced up. I hope the 3 people that suffered mild injuries sue her ass good.

ReplyDeleteMy father was a fireman. My son was a fireman in the Air Force for four years. Fire messes with your mind and a sort of atavistic self-preservation instinct kicks in. Also, no matter what time of day the fire is, a house fire is *dark*. You can see almost nothing inside the building.
ReplyDeleteI won't hate on anyone who panics. When my sons were little, that was one of my biggest fears: that we'd have a fire and I'd panic and not be able to control myself long enough to save them.
I also won't ever leave candles burning. I'm paranoid.

ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone is blaming her for not being able to rescue her companion animal. It's the candle she left burning while sleeping. And if this turns out to be false I will eat my words. It would be a whole diff ball game if say this was an electrical fire.

We had an electrical fire 17 YRS ago and barely made it out alive but our dog wasn't so fortunate and died. It was a terrifying experience I will never forget.

We had a house fire 2 1/2years ago. embers fell down into the cleanout in out garage. my husband had cardboard boxes in front of cleanout steel door. i never even knew about the cleanout...
my husband went to ohio as it happened my only thought was get the kids out.

ido not burn candles and i will light incence, woosh it around, then snuff it out. but i hate the smell of anything burning. i hate campfires too, something i used to love.

ReplyDeleteAnimals will hide when there is danger. As I understand it her brother left the candle burning and felt guilty enough to try and rescue the dog. Honestly you first instinct is self preservation. And it is dark and scary when there's a fire. I can only imagine she feels huge remorse and sadness. Had she the chance to do it all over...
ReplyDeleteAs I pet owner I will come to her defense a bit. If fire alarms are going off most animals will instinctively hide. I lived in a ten story apartment where the alarms were so loud it was impossible to even call your pets. I had three cats at the timeand they normally came when I called but during alarms? No way in hell. I once spent fifteen minutes during the first alarm trying to get them but they wouldn't come. I threw my bed aside and everything but if you know anything about scared cats and small dogs, they just run to the next hiding spot or cram themselves into a deeper corner. Luckily for me all the alarms were false ones but I remember standing outside panicking over my pets and their welfare til I could go inside. During things like that its incredibly nerve-wracking.

That said I always have my pets with collars and tags and they're chipped. In addition I suggest putting up those stickers on the front of your door to firefighters indicating there are pets inside too.
It's also possible that if they were sleeping and an alarm or the fire department woke them up, they were slightly disoriented. Maybe they weren't fully aware of what was going on, hence leaving the dogs (they were probably hiding anyway, not sitting at the front door barking to get out). I'm a dog lover, BTW, with three of my own, so I'm not some random animal hater.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the initial reports were that she was NOT home, thereby making the fire someone else's fault, not hers. The 'truth', however, was that she was at home, sleeping, with her boyfriend (not Ryan) and her brother. The thing with Ryan is for PR, nothing more, and apparently her boyfriend is some normal guy, a civilian, if you will.
I hate the PR spin put on it, but the truth comes out in the oddest ways. As for who took the pics and posted them? She's a celeb, and it's newsworthy. Not in a stalker way, but in an 'I'm here right now while this is happening' sort of way. Isn't this how we get so many things on film?
I hate that her dog died, and I hate that there is so much damage. I'm glad everyone is OK, though.
Oh Hell NO, it wasn't Ryan Phillipe...Headline would be that Ryan Phillipe was in a House Fire at his girlfriends house, not the other way around!

ReplyDeleteI honestly don't know why candles don't come w/warning labels. booze has them, cigarettes have them etc. etc. I guess no one has sued the candle industry yet, but they are very very dangerous and cause alot of deaths every year.
