Your Turn

I know the Daytona 500 was on yesterday which is the Super Bowl of NASCAR, but does anyone actually watch NASCAR anymore?

  2. God no!!! Cars going in a circle? Not in this lifetime!!

  3. I did not. My dad did cause he'll watch any sport.

  4. Turned it on so my two girls could see Danica running up front. Told them it could be them if they wanted. Then caught up on stuff on dvr

  5. Had no idea it was even on until I was reading the James Franco controversy.

  6. I was too busy trying to pick up ladies at the local IKEA.

  7. F1 is way better. However, that NASCAR crash was INSANE.

  8. @Lotta what was the controversy?

We turned it on to watch the beginning and end.

  9. Well, they have to find something to do now that they no longer go to the movies.

  10. NASCAR fan here. We usually mute the race and listen to NPR but we watched yesterday to see Danica compete.

  11. @FSP, excellent. Keep on keeping on.

  12. Apparently because Dancica is the first woman to make it there he couldn't just say "Ladies and gentleman start your engines..." instead he said "Drivers and Danica...."

A lot of people were not happy.

  13. NASCAR is like football on steroids, if you're a fan, you're A FAN.

Talladega Nights is the closest to NASCAR I've watched in years. Mr's ringtone on my phone is Will Farrell screaming, "I'm on fire! Help me, Jesus! Help me, Tom Cruise! Tom Cruise, use your witchcraft to get the fire off of me!"

Aaaand that's why I silence my phone in meetings.

  14. @LottaColada - Yeah, we heard that and watched 50 cent creeping on Erin Andrews. It was definitely a huge gaffe and it made it seem like he was clueless and perhaps shouldn't have had the privilege of saying those words.

  17. Yeah it was kind of a slap in the face to Danica. He's such a tool.

  18. So pretentious dip wad implied that drivers are only male, and Danica had to be named separately because as a female she didn't fit into the category of drivers?

    Asshole.

I don't watch it, I can't see the appeal in watching too many too fast cars going around a track too many times. I do know a lot of people who love it, though. Probably the most rabid fan I've ever known was a coworker's boyfriend who was impotent for three months after Dale Earnhardt died.

  20. Maybe James deFarce-o was trying to stalk Danica and she threatened to run him over.

I'm watching Freaks & Geeks (awww, young Jason Segel is adorable!) and his character on there is a glimpse into future douchebaggery. (Also, so that's who Busy Philips is! I actually like her character. :b)

  21. That's harsh Pogue. I watched yesterday because I'm still suffering from football withdrawal and to see Danica. I think or hope that James Franco was just high and misspoke.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's possible James Franco thought he was being funny/cute, and didn't mean for it to come off as a slight.

  23. My hubby watches NASCAR, so I had the misfortune to see James Franco making an ass of himself. This time last year Franco was annoying at the Oscars; he managed to be EVEN MORE infuriating with only six words. Would everyone please stop inviting that insufferable douchebag to places? Thank you.

  24. Big Tony Stewart fan here from the Hoosierland!
Yes, I watched it. Daytona is to Nascar as the Indy 500 is to open wheel racing.

And Amber, I agree - F1 is better.

  25. We've never watched NASCAR in our house, but we were feeling Danicurious yesterday and watched. I admit I found it far more interesting than I thought I would, but I don't see myself turning into a racing fan.

  26. I used to work for a cable company, and our NASCAR In Car thing was hugely popular--for a fee you could get this pay per view thing with dash cams for cars. Still lots of NASCAR fans.

  27. The "any more" implies there was a time I watched it. I never watched pro wrestling or monster truck rallies either. Not that there's anything wrong with those things. If you are The Dukes of Hazard.

  28. NASCAR committed suicide with that Car of Tomorrow bullshit. They need more Smokey Yunick's and an anti-trust prosecution to force the sport out of the hands of the France's. It'll still be just a bunch of dumb rednecks "ternin' layft"
and trading paint, but I might watch it.

  29. Only if Ricky Bobby is driving.

  30. I grew up in raceland. Mama lives about 7 miles from the CLT Motor Speedway which is actually in concord..Even watched dirt track racing at the Metrolina Speedway.
We would have great parties when mama used to go to Daytona to watch the race with all her girlfriends.
But now..Nope, watching all the cars go around in a circle is not my idea of a good time.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I say the same thing about the Oscar's, but anyway, I never watch either of them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It pulled a 22 share yesterday, so "only" about a fifth of everyone watching TV yesterday afternoon were all tuned in to the race. So yeah, people still watch it.

Franco said during the prerace show that he's a big Danica fan and was planning to give her a special shoutout during the command. I think he just got a little too high and completely cocked it up, but there was no ill intent there.

  33. I quit watching when Jimmy Johnson won for the second time. He's quite boring. That being said I was happy to go last fall when my family was given tickets.

  34. I drive in and around Boston. We live NASCAR, but without the fireproof suits.

  35. Nope. My hubby refers to it as "cars turning left." Any idea why they never go the other direction instead?

  36. Pogue, I'm sure you have a problem with the ghetto thugs in the NBA and NFL? Or do you only hate white "rednecks", you racist cunt?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I grew up a stone's throw from SIR, so trust me, there's a whole group of people who watch NASCAR.

    ReplyDelete
  38. PS I think NASCAR is super gay and don't watch it but funny how they don't have any Ron Artest-esque fights in the stands, chimping out or other monkeyshines that happens in the "vibrantly diverse" (90% black) NFL and NBA. Chimpouts and TNB are more interesting, let's be honest.

    1. @888 Uhhh...didn't you just call someone else out for being racist?? The comment you were talking about definitely wasn't nice, but yours is much worse. The things you said are vile and way more racist than Pogue's. Just saying.

      Delete
  39. 888: I'm white so how can I possibly be "racist" against whites? Duh. I'm not racist against blacks for that matter, either. I just don't like trailer trash, regardless of colour.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Pogue is just showing his/her own ignorance.

Irish: They have several "road courses" over the year (fewer and fewer) where they do turn right.

Half the people I've heard put stock car racing down as boring because they only turn left ... watch golf. Baseball can be pretty dull. Each to his/her own. Just because you don't participate or watch a sport doesn't mean you have to put the people down who do.

I hate football because it's become such a blood sport, but I'm not gonna call the people who love it ignorant or barbaric.

  41. FYI, the proper thing to say when the drivers are men and woman/women are either:

    Drivers, start your engines!

When a driver is retiring, it's custom to call out that driver to start the engine first.

There have been other women in NASCAR, though none have gotten the pole as Danica did, and they've said:
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

I really wasn't offended by what Franco said because it doesn't really matter. I was more offended that, as a paid guest of NASCAR, Fiddy Cent couldn't even be bothered to take his damn Oakland Raiders ballcap off. If the NFL ever invited me to the Super Bowl, I wouldn't wear my NASCAR hat!

  42. All I'm gonna say is I love NASCAR. It's a bonding thing between my dad, myself, and my son.

I just want to point out there have been 15 female drivers in what would be considered the Sprint Cup that came before Danica.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh come on! The one and only time that NASCAR drivers ever competed evenly against other race car drivers--the first IROC series--the road course drivers handed their asses to them on a plate. The only NASCAR drivers who were even in the hunt were former rally drivers. King Petty finished 10th!

NASCAR: Turn left and grin for the sponsors. Takes balls to trade paint at 220 on the front stretch at Talledega, but it doesn't take driving skill. How can you even call it "racing" if all you do for hours is keep your foot in it, never change gears and turn left every couple of minutes?

  44. My stepfamily Loves NASCAR and always has a party for this race because "it's our Super Bowl", which doesn't make sense to me because it's the first race of the year, and always invite to it which I always decline. The one and ONLY thing I always found interesting was the sponsor logos that are visible to the cameras on the cars. So to answer your question...HELL NO!

  45. I've never been a fan but I used to love about an hour and a half from Daytona Speedway and once a guy I know roped me into volunteering at a food vendor booth there. His girlfriend's son was autistic IIRC and they were working a food both and all the profits were theirs to keep for an Autism charity and they needed volunteers to work race weekend. I volunteered to work a 5 hour shift one day and it was CRAZY. Non-stop lines and we were by no means the only kiosk there. We sold hot dogs, hamburgers, beers and a few other things. I have never been interested remotely in NASCAR, but when I finished my shift I went out and stood in the stadium watching the cars zoom around it was really bright and rather hypnotic. I was only standing there for about 2 minutes before a guard kicked me out but I'd had my fill anyway. I can not imagine sitting there all day anyway.

I have friends who've gone and they say the seats are tiny and you're crammed in like sardines and the way to go is partying in a motorhome.

  47. The only real type of racing is to actually race yourself. Four-wheel drifts as speed, that'll grow hair where the sun don't shine.

But from the spectator point of view, screw NASCAR. Find yourself a non-NHRA drag track and go to a night meet. The IHRA strips tend to be a lot more lax about safety. As in, you can walk right down by the staging lanes and watch 'em launch from about fifteen feet away. Wear serious hearing protection!

It's kind of a stupid form of racing, but standing that close to a 5,000 horsepower drag Hemi when it lights off is something to be experienced.

  48. Oh, yeah, I have been a fan but haven't been watching since Dale Jr. left DEI for Hendricks.. so it's been a while. I used to think it was just turning left too.... but once I got into it and was watching EVERY Sunday learned there's more at play, a 'backstory' that makes it interesting... could be a rivalry or payback, pit or team strategy, engine drama, there's always something to watch for, bit of a soap opera at times. I was also caught up in Dale Earnhardt too, how he could see the air when drafting, that man did some amazing things with his car --one race from back to front in the closing laps, with the famous pass in the grass. Never thought of it as "National Association of Stupid Country Ass Rednecks", though its origins were in rum running and you see in the movie Lawless they paid homage to that ...in the town scene there is the garage with the sign Hendricks.

  49. Used to watch it with guy friends in HS/College. I rooted for Jeff Gordon and Dick Trickle. I've been to two races at Darlington, one of which my co-workers began consuming canned domestic beer in the parking lot at 10a.m. I find it incredibly boring but I have lots of friends/family that love it. I think Juan Pablo and Jimmie Johnson are HOT. My husband watches only this race (thank you, 8lb baby Jesus) but I didn't.

  50. Yes .. I watched .. not that that should remotely be a surprise to anyone who knows me here. ;)
