Your Turn

This is a three day weekend in America and I know most parts of Canada had one last weekend. My question is do you actually go anywhere on your three day weekends or do you just stay home?

  1. Stay home. There's usually a Real Housewives or Top Model marathon involved

  6. Just to clarify - people in Gov't offices and Schools and maybe some private businesses get to enjoy a 3 day weekend several times a year. But those of us that have regular jobs do not get general days off like Presidents day, MLK day, etc. So Yeah, I'll be working :) No 3 day here!

    1. A bit OT, I went to college in the Deep South and we never got MLK ay off until finally they came up with a Confederate Day. I can't remember the exact year but MLK Day was not recognized until 2004/2005. Pitiful...

  8. Haha. Hahahahaha. Not going anywhere, this is a typical 1 day weekend for us.

  9. We love to be at home, so we usually just hunker down. Also, we have lots of animals, and it's more trouble than it's worth to get someone to take care of them for just a couple of days. Gonna party Frufra-style - snacks, tv, and as much pj time as humanly possible!

  10. Usually I just clean the house, get caught up on all my shows and relaxxxxx... but this year the hubby and I will be celebrating our anniversary! So excited

  11. The area I'm an apparently is giving the kids a 4-day weekend. No school today because of President's Day on Monday... lucky kids.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Only the weekend off here. Most don't get Monday off, unless you work at a school or for the government/state.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't get President's Day off, but I don't mind. My company basically gives us 15 days off (in addition to vacation) that we use for six recognized holidays (New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) and then for whatever we want throughout the year.

If I have a 3-day weekend, it just means that I can drink whatever I want on Sunday.

  14. Off Monday, headed to Colorado springs to see my son...he's stationed in the Air Force there...hoping to see pretty snow!

  15. I haven't had one of these bogus holidays off since high school. And quite frankly, I think kids should have to go to school on these days to actually LEARN about MLK and the presidents. Actually, my school district this year reinstated the school days because there were so many days missed due to Hurricane Sandy.

The stores and shopping Web sites put on great sales, though. So, I will be shopping.

  16. In health care this was never a holiday. Usually you only got the big 5 (NY, Mem., 4th of July, Labor, T'giving & Christmas.) I was lucky enough to work in places where the day after Thanksgiving was a holiday, which I really enjoyed. The courts are closed here, and the Post Office (those bastards just sent back another check to a client saying our address does not exist) but other than that it's a regular Monday.

  17. Happy Birthday to RCB!!

    Happy Anniversary to S. Joy!!!

The real holiday is today, people!! It's Half-Off Chocolate Day!!! Surely I'm not the only one who celebrates? For shame, people...for shame!!

  18. Staying home. I work for a non-profit and most holidays (like MLK Day), we have community events and "as long as the building is open Monday - Friday, all employees are expected to either be at work or to use PTO if you wish the day off."

Plus, given that I used to be an accountant with a large regional CPA firm, I'm used to not even being allowed to be sick for the first 5 months of the year (forget about holidays.) Could be worse.

  19. I'm staying home plus I get an extra day where I don't have to sneak on CDAN from my work PC I can freely use my phone or Laptop. Plus I have a lot of recorded shows to catch up on.

  20. Boo, not a 3 day for me. If it was I would spend the extra day painting. 2 BR's & 2 hallways on the list. Fun!

@Em, I'm jealous! I want to go to Voodoo Doughnuts, it looks delicious!

  21. VIP stole the words straight outta my mouth.

RCB happy birthday! Give yourself a birthday treat and invest in some Caramellowz. Just don't eat the whole thing at once -__-

  22. No 3 day for us!! We are moving on Sunday and Monday, and Hubby has off Monday (just due to his schedule). He wants to go hunting in S Texas next weekend, so my requirement is that we be completely moved. If he gets to play for 4 days, he needs to work hard ;)

  23. You guys, Voodoo Donuts are YUMMY, and Portland is always fun. My mom lives in the country but I usually make a day trek when I'm down. Dia Papaya can attest to the deliciousness!

This ties neatly into what I was going to say today: John Galt and I are headed to L.A. for the weekend, and I wanted to know a) what you all would recommend doing while we're there and b) if anyone in the L.A. area wanted to meet up! Thoughts?

  31. The majority of provinces in Canada have their 3 day weekend this weekend - last weekend it was just British Columbia. Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta all have Monday as a holiday. (sorry, all the rest of you!)

We had planned on going to Banff tomorrow as it is my husband's birthday, but on Thursday we found out our oldest son is in a basketball tournament all weekend. (sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  32. My husband works weekend nights and if there is a public holiday involved will be paid triple time.

So we take non holiday weekend time off

    :)

  33. @OMAMA! You're back! Are you doing OK?

Usually I don't go anywhere on a 3-day weekend, although sometimes I've been known to take a day or two off beforehand so I can go visit my family. This weekend is different, though:

    (1) I'm catsitting for a friend of mine while she's off selling jewelry at the Fetish Flea Market in RI (why yes, I DO have a lot of freaky friends... ;-) which generally means going over twice a day to feed & water Smudge, give him his meds, scoop the litter box, and play w/him if he doesn't decide to hide because he can.

    (2) For the very first time EVER, I'm going to an open casting call for a movie that'll be shooting here in the very near future; as I understand it, they're looking for extras. I was at the dentist's office yesterday, and it turned out that one of the women who works there is a cousin of the casting director, and it seemed as if everyone in the office knew people who'd been extras or better at one point. The best story involved one woman who went on her MIL's suggestion; things were dragging and she started getting obviously annoyed, which got her the attention of the casting people. The next thing she knew, she ended up being one of Mark Wahlberg's psycho sisters in The Fighter, and had to warn the MIL that she'd be using language and behaving in a way onscreen that she didn't normally do. (Apparently the role was a complete 180 for her.) No idea what's going to happen, but wish me luck!

First of all, call yourself the much classier and PC term "Background Actor" - not "extra".

Secondly, just go in, be yourself, and be professional. They will cast according to "look" for.whet they need first and foremost. But you will get called for more days of work the more you are professional, listen to direction, and all around low.key and enjoyable to work with...

Even one day on a set though will be fun and interesting for you to see how.the."machine" works. If you do get the job and cast - then bring books, ipad, kindle, or whatever to pass the time. On any set there is hours of.waiting until.shots are ready then jump in, do the work, then wait again for the next shot setup.

      Hope this info helps.

  38. We spend money on our kids for Family Day weekend (yep, this weekend, thank you very much Enty!) *L* Going to the water park, going to a movie, eating out. That should hold them until Easter weekend.

  39. I work at a hospital. We don't get 3 day weekends unless we schedule them.

  43. Hey Everyone!

I took my wife and toddler daughter to a very old school classic hotel this weekend. It was 80 degrees, so we spent the day in the pool and lounging on our balcony. We are having a relaxing blast! I might jump in the jacuzzi later tonight. The ladies are napping now before dinner.

  44. Happy to @RCB and S.Joy!

  45. would love doughnuts with @EM and @Robin you have my good wishes for luck. "Break a Leg." @Omama good to see you.

  46. Thanks for the advice, @Xander!

@Agent**it: I have something even better than brownies this time...I have chocolate-chip cookie dough truffles dipped in dark chocolate. *charmingly evil grin* I haven't made them very often because, while not really hard to make, they're definitely a pain in the butt, but everyone who's had them so far has raved, especially people who love eating raw cookie dough (these are safe because they're made w/sweetened condensed milk, not eggs). OM NOM NOM NOM NOM!

  47. I work with kids and our school district started a four day weekend today, after reading abut how many of you will be working, I feel especially lucky that I got to start my day at the beach with a warm off shore, then got to toast my dads 68th bday...
But most of all I will be catching up with my CDAN peeps, I miss you guys....look for random 9pm postings on 2-3 day old threads, it's kinda my signature move.
Rej, happy bday! Enjoy a baked treat if you can! And S.Joy, happy anniversary! What a lovely and romantic time to have been married!

As I am unemployed I will have a long weekend but not by choice. But seeing as how neither I nor the Opster work in schools or public / government we wouldn't get the day off otherwise. All those that do, ENJOY!!!
