Quvenzhane Wallis Is Called The C Word
I'm not sure who over at The Onion decided that any woman should be called the c word, but they not only did that, but called a 9 year old girl the same thing. In a tweet last night that The Onion let stand for an hour before finally bowing to pressure and removing, Quvenzhane was called the c word. Who could do that to a 9 year old kid? I know it is a satire site, but there is nothing funny about that and I hope the person responsible gets fired and that The Onion apologizes. There is just no excuse for that and if I am a writer there, I am ticked off about it and if I am a woman there, forget it, guys are getting their butts kicked there today.
F* you, Onion. I've loved you forever but that was just cruel. The c* word is horrible and that sweet, talented little girl didn't deserve it.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, Chris Brown was fawned over by a talk show host from the Onion.
I see no one call him the c-word.
DeleteI see no one call him the c-word.
DeleteAgreed. And I rarely think anyone ever goes "too far."
ReplyDelete@Nervous Nelly
DeleteSame here, it takes a LOT to offend me and this is just disgusting. I thought she was adorable during the awards and showed what a charming personality that she has. This is just awful, gross, not funny, a pitiful excuse for satire, ugh!
Trying to be edgy gone terribly, terribly wrong. Eeww.
ReplyDeleteMese, exactly what i was goingvto sat!

ReplyDeleteTerrible and uncalled for.
ReplyDeleteI did see that the Onion has apologized, and are promising to discipline the people involved w/the tweet (I assume by this they mean they'll be canned). Still, no one should have posted this in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to lie, I've seen some out of control 9-year-olds that I wouldn't get mad at someone calling them the C word. However, "Little Q" is not one of them. She seemed super cute and very poised for her young age. Not cool, onion. Not cool
ReplyDeleteAgreed with Me Sew Pretty. And if I were Quvenzhane's mom, The Onion would have a lovely voicemail filled with 50 of my favorite swear words. Do not mess with kids!!!
ReplyDeleteThey did post an apology letter. Here's the link
ReplyDeletehttps://www.facebook.com/TheOnion/posts/10151500974969497
She's a kid, FFS!! ;(
ReplyDeleteI use cunt to describe people who deserve it: the Ann Coulters of the world. No shame from me on that, but jeez, a kid?!
Wasn't it also her birthday? That's horrible. I normally like the Onion, but satire does not excuse horrible taste and lack of humor.
ReplyDeleteAttacking The Onion for being tasteless is like attacking Jack Nicholson for being lecherous. It's in their DNA.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they apologized. A sad day for the Onion, which is usually hilarious.
ReplyDeleteWhoever thought this was funny needs to leave comedy to the professionals. In no way, shape or form is it funny to call a 9 year old that word. Hope they are canned!
ReplyDeleteWho calls a child that vulgar word? They should be ashamed of themselves!
ReplyDeleteI know it is a satire site, but there is nothing funny about that and I hope the person responsible gets fired and that The Onion apologizes.
ReplyDeleteThe apology has been up for roughly 2 hours as of this comment, which is an hour and 45 minutes longer than this entry at CDaN. I guess that would have been too much effing work to go looking for it. And if the tweet's so offensive (which I agree, it is)... why post a screenshot of it?
It was Emanuelle Riva's birthday yesterday. And I loved it every time the camera went to Quvenzhane. She was flippin adorable.
ReplyDeleteThey use the "C-word" like a comma in England and they're none the worse for wear.
ReplyDeleteIs it REALLY as bad as the "N-word" or the "F-word-for-gay-people"?
Not within my circle of friends and family, we don't so perhaps don't jump to that assumption for all people in England, eh?
DeleteThe C word is the vilest, most vicious in the English language and to use it against a 9 year old girl is appalling, even if it's said amongst friends. That it was published on a social media site AND left up for any amount of time is beyond the pale.
John Legend's fiancé got slammed on Twitter for saying Q was cocky or something like that and personally I agree with her. I know she's a kid. I have a grandchild the same age and she would have been told to tone it down last night.
ReplyDeleteSeriously?! She's a nine year old lil' girl plucked out of New Orleans from obscurity that is nominated for an Oscar. I think it's a ok for her to be a lil' cocky. She's proud of herself which she should be
DeleteShe's always getting slammed, because she's obnoxious. Someone needs to tell her to "tone it down".
DeleteBeing a female sucks. Its worse than being a damn dog. I dont understand men who become women at all. I've lived in a extremely misogynisitc macho state since I was 18 and I can tell you from my own experience this is par for the course for most men. If there is such a thing as reincarnatiom I aint coming back as a female anything ever again. The one good thing about being childless is ill never have to explain to my daughter why women are second.class and get called all these awful names and get raped and battered and then blamed for it all. My mom was a single feminist and raisd me to think women were really as good as men, so it was a terrible shock when i moved out here to Redneck Heaven and saw the reality. There aint nothing you can do about sexism, its just part of being a woman.
ReplyDeleteThanks Enty, I was wondering if you would post this story!
ReplyDeleteI usually find The Onion hilarious, but this was just flat out ridiculous and mean. That word should NEVER be used in reference to a child.
As much as Sandra Rose annoys me, I agree with her take on the subject.
http://sandrarose.com/2013/02/hollywood-turns-against-quvenzhane-wallis/
Dear Onion,
ReplyDeleteC__T really ? This is a nine year old girl. What were you thinking...oh wait you weren't thinking.
You were out if line I hope the flowers you sent saying you're sorry cost you a mint...because they don't begin to repair the damage you've done....
You should be ashamed ...
Not cool Onion. Not funny either.
ReplyDeleteOH HELL NO!! You don't fuck with my Little Q!
ReplyDeleteI'll admit that I snorted a little when I saw the tweet. As I do when I know I'm not supposed to laugh, but I sorta do a little anyway.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I though "Q" was absolutely adorable all night, every time the camera panned to her she looked like she was having a great time, and she was very graceful when she did not win. And she really was phenomenal in "Beasts...".
@Maja- I agree with everything you said. Had she been rolling her eyes all night, everyone would be calling Q an ungrateful brat but instead she was in a good mood so she's cocky? SMH.
Delete@calif I think she was just super excited, as any child in her situation would have been. Also, there's a BIG difference between calling her cocky and a cunt. No comparison.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she was being cocky at all, she probably knew she was not going to win. I thought she was adorable, she was doing what she does in the movie. She's nine for goodness sake!! I'm inapproprte at times, too many times per my husband, but this is just rediculous. Apology or not, who ever posted this is out of their mind. (Hoping this person was screwed up on some type of substance because there is no excuse for this).
ReplyDeleteInappropriate, I hate blogger sometimes...
DeleteI think it's pretty funny. And I'm female. I love that word only because so many people are offended by it. Does it really matter if they called her that or a b*tch or a little snot? Intent is all the same. Who cares what word is used?
ReplyDeleteKids are off limits-always.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI know England uses the word twat as much as Americans say YOLO, but do they say cunt that much?
ReplyDeleteI didn't think 'Little Q' was entirely cute last night, I thought she got a little bit overbearing and her mother should have prepared her a little bit better for it, but it doesn't matter. She is NINE and most nine year olds on the planet would have had a weird time in that spotlight.
The Onion screwed up big time on this one, glad they posted the apology.
SCRATCHY KITTY, what you wrote is entirely true. I hope you don't mind if I save it. I've been trying to explain to certain men in my life that as a woman 'the war on women' feels very real to me, in many ways, but they just don't get it. I think what you wrote might help to educate them. Thanks. Peace. :)
Next to Willow Smith Quvenzhane is humble as well as adorable...she'll be a cute Annie.
ReplyDeleteBadMutha: Ask the people who cared what word Lisa Lampanelli used. If people are going to be offended by a word used between friends, the outcry over this one used to describe a child should be even louder.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteUgh, having the worst time commenting...
ReplyDelete@Evil Kumquat -
The "C" word is A LOT more offensive to Americans than it is to Brits. Many people here can't say it out loud and think it the absolute MOST offensive thing you can say to a woman. I do see it being used more often recently, though, and wonder it it's losing some of it's offensiveness here.
How can people call her cocky? She's freakin 9 years old! Sure she's probably slightly more mature than most, but I didn;t take her actions as cocky, I took them as someone with a camera on them who didn't know what the hell to do. If i had a camera panning on me I would probably do some awkward hand motion too and im 24.
ReplyDeleteWhilst I don't think it's acceptable for a 9 year old to be called a cunt, I for one do not have a problem with the word.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it has the meaning it once had.
If someone called me one I'd just be disappointed that they couldn't be more creative with their insult.
Oh, and as for Q and her behavior last night - I thought she was cute and not out of line at all. I mean, she's 9.
ReplyDeleteI think people forget just how long and grueling awards season is. It's not just the Oscars - it's months of awards show and diligent campaigning. Lainey has a story about being in a press line with Q and how utterly exhausted she was by the end - pleading with her publicist to stop but being goaded into continuing.
The Oscars was one long, exhausting night to cap off a long, exhausting season. I think Q held up well and acquitted herself admirably.
And yes we use it quite a lot in england.
ReplyDeleteSorry for being a cunt.
ReplyDeleteThe use of the word by the Onion was not a shocker. The use of the word in reference to a child is beyond unacceptable and I believe warrants a pink slip!
ReplyDeleteThat word should never be used to describe a child and her behavior last night was fine, she's a kid!
ReplyDeleteBased on my experiences only.....
ReplyDeleteNobody in my world uses kunt. It is a ridiculous word that means nothing. I use it satirically as onewould usethe word bitch. Lil Q probably doesn't even know what it means. This would be a good time for her mom to explain the grown up world that she working in. If hermom gets angry then she is missing an opportunity to help Q understand this type of thing so that as she matures she can brush it off as part of the environment she is in.
I've met some very kunty nine year olds, btw. Not that I'd ever call them on it..........
ReplyDeleteYou guys, it's the Onion. They called her that because she is the person who *least* deserved the moniker. A joke.
ReplyDelete@tealily, you nailed it. I laughed. It's funny because who would call a 9 year old that.
DeleteEveryone here that's all offended should check out the late great Patrice O'Neil defending Don Imus on the fox and friends morning show.
Exactly. It was a joke. Perhaps tasteless and way over the line. But a joke. It doesn't mean she was cocky. It was supposed to startle a laugh out- the juxtaposition of that word and a sweet little girl.
DeleteSorry. I don't think my message came across. People seem to be looking at her behavior as a reason she was called this. No. Just no. There is no reason, no amount of cocky that makes it ok.
DeleteIt was a poorly thought out "joke". Awful but true. Lets not start ripping apart a nine year old, acting like she brought this on herself.
A lot of people mistook Quvenzhane's attitude for cocky but seriously she's such a doll! The part where she shows off her biceps is straight from a scene in the movie. I'm sure most of the people bashing Q have NEVER even taken the time to watch the movie.
ReplyDeleteOn that note thank you @JSierra for recommending Beasts of the Southern Wild! I am officially obsessed with Q! So happy for her and all of her success. I look forward to watching that Annie remake now that Willow "im a kid" Smith dropped out.
We need to remember that Quvenzhane is new to Hollywood, and therefore hasn't been put through the ringer yet. She still has her true personality--bold and independent, with a sense of who she really is.
ReplyDeleteAs she continues with her career, she'll likely be groomed within an inch of her life, and then we'll complain about that.
For those who call her cocky: careful what you wish for. She may become just another Hollywood robo-kid soon enough. And will that be good for you?
I thought it was horrible of them. But I am satisfied with the apology and so, moving on.
ReplyDeleteIn Enty's defence though, he writes this stuff the night before and sets it it upload at regular intervals throughout the morning so technically the apology had not been issued when he wrote this.
I haven t watched the Oscars but I ve seen a lot of Quvenzhane in the media these last weeks. I found it must have been a bit too much and I thought it actually was rather unhealthy for a kid her age.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder she got cocky after being fawned over and pulled here and there for weeks on end.
And it was an awful joke. She s 9.
I have used that word for ONLY egregious idiots, male or female, ( I don't dignify it with a gender). The use this time was idiotic and an apology works for me from the people who had Iran buying their satirical fun!
ReplyDeleteSnapdragon, this tweet was discussed in the 1st post, within the comments, without a link.

scratchy kitty, you are so full of shit, just admit you desperately want to be one of the protected, petted "minority" classes of people that get to whine, cry and complain every time someone doesn't kiss your ass.
ReplyDeleteI'm a woman too, from a "redneck" state (hint, if you don't like it there, MOVE THE FUCK AWAY, I'm sure DC, NYC or LA is more your style) and I've been treated more kindly and considerately by those evil "redneck" men than I ever have by the enlightened, progressive, educated (emasculated) "men" in the big cities.
Maybe if you didn't act like a super cunt with a huge chip on your shoulder, you might be treated better. Don't think the redneck bigots don't know exactly how you feel about them, I'm certain you make it obvious, but THEY are the problem! Of course! In the victim class it's ALWAYS someone else's fault! God forbid those men don't want to sit around and be lectured by some cunt on the patriarchy and how they're all evil redneck sexist racists! Get over yourself, you are not that important, nobody cares about your opinion and nobody is going to kiss your ass. You can fit in and act like a sensible person or you can whine about bullshit. It's your choice but don't complain when people dislike you because you're a contentious, disagreeable, unlikable loudmouth cunt.
As for this Q-whatever kid, who gives a damn? I can only muster up enough outrage over that retarded name. It fairly screams TNB so therefore I am uninterested. I just hope she escapes being another ghetto baby momma on welfare like so many of her co-ethnics.
Boom awesomeness!
DeleteSMACKDOWN!!!!! Very well deserved too....ca't stand it when people refer to people in the South as rednecks and any other degrading word they can use. People should learn some Southern hospitality and some manners.

DeleteI am born and bred in the South, and as you will probably be able to tell..not a redneck. @888...your ignorance is showing. Instead of trying to skirt around what you really wanted to say, why not be bold and fearless. After growing up in NC and interacting on a daily with ignorant, redneck bigots like yourself, I am astute at reading between the lines. Next time, why not just come out and call the adorable, talented 9-year old African-American child a N-I-G....like u wanted to

ReplyDeleteShe's just a little girl who was very excited to be where she was, and I thought she was adorable last night--she hasn't hit puberty yet, so she still has all the confidence that girls do at that age. (After puberty, it's a whole 'nother story, with girls becoming much more tentative and lacking in self-esteem. Sad but true...) She behaved just as well as anyone else, and probably better than plenty of people, especially considering just how damn long and draining a show like that can be.
ReplyDeleteAs for using the word in general (because I think we can all agree that it was most inappropriate in this case), I do know that it tends to be slung around a lot in certain circles in the UK, what with people calling themselves and their friends "silly cunts" and such, with no real harm intended. I've also heard of it being used amongst old-timers in northern New England, generally as a unit of measurement ("Move it a cunt hair this way, will you?"), with, again, no real harm intended. In modern-day America, though, it does tend to be used as an extreme insult to be slung at women, with the idea of reducing them to nothing more than their genitalia, and somebody has to be Pretty Damn Bad before I start thinking about calling them one. (Yes, there are people; no, I'm not naming names.) I can see that the Onion Tweeter was trying to be all edgy and cool, but I'd say this is one of the bigger cases of online fail that I've seen in a long time...but you all know that anyway, right? OK, I'll stop babbling now...

ReplyDeleteQuvenshane was the only nominee to cheer for Jennifer L. when she was announced. That little girl is awesome and I hope she has a great career - and I hope she has normal parents and not ones that come from the Culkin and Lohan scum pond.
ReplyDeleteProps, Scratchy, you brought the troll out!
ReplyDeleteEducated = emasculated. Awesome!
Never a dull moment with 888 around. The crazy cunt
Delete@Agent**It--wha?
ReplyDeleteAnd I do take the point about these being prepped in advance. It just seems odd to me that there's no double-checking before going to press, as it were.
Snapdragon, no disagreement here.
Delete@Robin, really good point - I remember reading a Stephen King book where a Maine old-timer was trying to start a machine or something and he's all "come on, you old c*" and I thought nothing of it. There was a line in another book, something like "she's a right cunny", too.
ReplyDeleteUsed against a 9yo girl, imo, that's different.
888, give it a rest. It's quite obvious you're not who you say you are, and are just trolling. Whatever flicks your peanut, dear.
I laughed. I don't feel bad now that a few of you have come forward. I was really questioning myself for a minute. I took as a joke since she was so sweet, cute and young. I don't know why the C_nt is worse than Bitch (or why I didn't feel like I could type it out all the way). Either word is derogatory, yet bitch is used all the time.
ReplyDeleteWow..,@888,
ReplyDeleteA mysogynist and a racist..you must be some catch. I bet it pains you to see people like, the president, first lady and Hillary Clinton huh??
Oh well..bitter is as bitter does.
Lil Q is nine. She was up way past her bedtime. If her mother got her to nap during the day it would be a miracle. Any parent knows that nine year olds have perfected the art of cranky sleepyheads.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I have a problem with parents putting their kids into acting since there are so many cautionary tales available but that is not what the use of that word is about.
Would they have used to in reference to Suri Cruise, The Fanning Sisters, or any of the Tweens? My guess is no. That someone at the Onion thought it was okay to use it regarding Little Miss Wallis says a lot about the people who work there. That the apology has gone up so recently tells you they had no idea that people would react the way they have.
And again that says more about the Onion than anything.
Oh and I have never used that word. Ever.
ReplyDeleteClassless and unfunny.
ReplyDeleteIt's what happens when you have no standards. Boorish vulgarity is only entertaining for its shock value. When that wears off, all that's left is ... boorish vulgarity.
Uh, I'm guessing that nobody here actually ever read the Onion. I remember back when Mother Theresa died, they did an article about her being sent to hell and being raped by a demon dog in a divine administrative screw-up. And that's not the worst one I remember. Granted, it's become a lot tamer since they moved from Madison to NYC, but they still do a lot more offensive stuff than calling nine year olds bad names.
ReplyDeleteThe "joke" here is that the person who is speaking is a jackass and isn't it funny that a jackass says jackassy stuff. This approach was fresh and shocking and funny, about, oh, a generation or so ago. Yeah, the Onion used to be really cutting edge. Now, the "joke" is tired so they try to pile on more "shock" by referencing a child as the ostensible butt of the joke. Inappropriate AND unfunny.
ReplyDelete888-666-000 such a ZERO. How are we uneducated masses able to tell the difference? Cookies and hugs for cranky mugs!
ReplyDeleteI like my offensive jokes, but this went too far.
ReplyDeleteI have a daughter the same age as Q. She and her friends can be sassy little sh*ts. But the c word should be reserved for older sh*ts who can take it. NEVER kids.
the onion is dead to me now
ReplyDelete@ Scratchy Kitty, love the name. Not all men are like that, you have to do some looking, but there are good ones out there that celebrate, respect and empower women. Don't give up. they're few and far between but they're out there.
ReplyDelete888, you've got valid points about whiny women and passive-aggressive misogynists. (Seth McFarlane, white courtesy phone.) Don't ruin these perfectly good points by running down a 9 year old.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late to this discussion but just wanted to add: The word "cunt" is not acceptable. Ever. It's a term referring to female anatomy used as an insult. Every woman has a "cunt" - why should that be used as an insult? I just don't understand how ANYONE can excuse it in ANY connotation. God knows I used plenty of vulgar terms but I refuse to use language that insults my own gender. And the same goes for "douche". Why is a feminine hygiene product an insult? There was so much complaining about a "war on women" in the last election - why do we continue it on ourselves? I've seen some people here, people I like (well, as much as you can like someone who comments on a gossip blog) defend the use of that word and I say you need to rethink your use of it. Women have a difficult enough time with men - don't make it worse on each other.
ReplyDeleteYes Nellie, I agree that humor can be the juxtaposition but why didn't they just call her shy if they wanted the contrast?
ReplyDeleteUsing this word for a 9 yr old was so inappropriate. It just fell flat and made them look really bad.
888 would you prefer she be more like some of your co-ethnics from Pregnant at 16, Jersey Shore or Honey Boo Boo; class acts each and every one?
ReplyDeleteAnd S. Joy, I read Sandra Rose also and didn't get how the Onion is suddenly Hollywood? What has Hollywood done to her? Seth McFarland, love him or hate him didn't just sing the song Sandra was referring to to her as she wasn't the only one who lost, just the youngest so Sandra again has no a damn clue what she's talking about.
I phrased one sentence badly. I meant to say. "as much as you can like someone you only know by their posts on a gossip blog"
ReplyDeleteoh boy!
ReplyDeleteFor those who see it as funny, at what point does it become unfunny? If they had referred to her as a cunty cracker, since it is so opposite of who she actually is? Or if they had referred to her as a bratty whore, since that is what she so obviously is not? There is a difference between satire and jackassery and you can't use one an excuse to use the other.
ReplyDelete@jsierra, nah neither of those were funny but I wasn't offended by the attempt either. We don't have to agree but I do feel bad someone's getting fired that made a lot of people laugh. Its not the first time the onion has "crossed a line". She's so sweet and that word for some reason has such a bad connotation it was like wtf hahaha. I liked the shock value. I also liked their Ray Lewis murder joke during the Super Bowl.
DeleteI swear a fair amount but personally rarely if ever even think to use the c word.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is not in any way to defend them --she's a kid, and should be left alone, but I think where it may come from is Little Q is clearly super-smart and mature for her age, and I've seen 2 different TV interviews where they may have talked down to her a little bit and she responded in a kind of eye-rolling way--which came off slightly snotty in both cases.
Not a big deal, by no means an excuse--but she isn't your average cute little nine-year old.
I'm hoping doing Annie with the Pinkett Smiths doesn't spoil her--she is such a cool kid.
I hate that word. Even if it was said in jest, it was very inappropriate. She's a little girl. It was disrespectful to her as a young lady.
ReplyDeleteAs bad as that was, I thought Seth "joking" about her dating Clooney was beyond gross. And to do it with her mom and sister there, with a billion people watching, made it even worst.
ReplyDelete@West End Girl: That's why I said some Brits, not all of them; it's very much a YMMV thing. I was just recalling a Simon Doonan bit in one of his books (Wacky Chicks, page 13 of the paperback edition) where he talks about how he grew up hearing everyone cheerfully calling each other "cunts," and how he had to make a mental adjustment when he moves stateside to remember not to say it.
ReplyDeleteThe Onion's tweet had nothing to do with Q's behavior or perceived behavior during the Oscar telecast.
ReplyDeleteAs tealily so eloquently put it:
You guys, it's the Onion. They called her that because she is the person who *least* deserved the moniker. A joke.
Exactly. Jesus, people need to get a grip and accept that they were not sincerely calling her that. They were being sarcastic.
DeleteThe thought of someone losing their job (and quite possibly their means of supporting their family) just because they, a comedy writer, made a joke on a comedy website makes me very very sad. Personally, I'm disappointed that The Onion gave in to the demands of a bunch of humorless sooks.
Cunt and twat are widely thought of as the worst swear words in England. They may be slightly more used than in the US - but then so is fuck, England does not use 'the f bomb' - but they're not acceptable to many, many people.
ReplyDeleteI see what you guys are saying and I usually love The Onion, but this to me, was still in poor taste, mostly b/c I am imagining her or her mama reading it.
ReplyDeleteI've seen her in several interviews and I don't think she comes off as a brat at all. I was thinking more confident/spunky?
