ABC Greenlights Reality Show based On "Girls"

Well, if you want to ruin Girls, the best thing I can think of is for someone to make a reality show out of it. A few weeks ago there was a casting announcement for women who thought they fit into the "Girls" mold and now we know it was for ABC and they are going to start airing it in the spring. So, basically nothing like Girls probably. It will just be a bunch of single women in NYC having sex and partying and looking more like Jersey Shore than an actual episode of Girls.

Since its ABC you know it's going to be sleazy in the guise of good fun. I've only seen a few episodes of the Bachelorette but I remember being kind of shocked that the girl ( Jillian I think ? ) was on camera having sex with three dudes in a row on their " overnight fantasy dates ". They're reaching VH1 territory here. Sounds like a good time!

  4. Apparently they cast Hailee Glassmen, of Jon and Kate infamy. She was the daughter of Kate's plastic surgeon who had an affair with Jon near the end of their reign of terror. The show sounds like a real winner.

  5. They had better all be daughters of people prominent in the arts.

I caught about five minutes of "Girls" this past summer. In the bit I saw, Lena Dunham's character was showering with her boyfriend and he pissed on her. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be titillating or funny. It failed on both counts.

  7. When will execs learn it is NOT necessary to make a reality show out of EVERYTHING?!

Now that I'm home during the day, I'm SHOCKED at the ridiculousness of what you can watch on TV.

  8. lol the whole point of "Girls" is that there is no "mold" that most girls fit into.

On a related note, the more I watch this show, the more I like it. Truly hilarious.

  9. Why doesn't Enty ever post links with his stories??

  10. I watched the first season and while I thought I was ok, I couldn't relate. Its not real. Yes Lena we know you are comfortable with your body and I'm all for that but the show doesn't elaborate on the struggles of young twenty somethings enough. Talk about struggling to pay your student loans and rent. Unemployment and underemployment. Dating violence. Something other than sex, boyfriends and weed. If you are not a hipster living in Williamsburg who's parents can afford to subsidize your student loan payments or rent don't bother watching this show. I relate more to Fiona Gallagher from Shameless than to ANY of the girls on Girls and Im a 24 y/o college grad, from a middle class family living in NYC. Ugh off to finish studying for my GMATs....

    1. @Rafi right on. The show reads like a privilaged group of girls' perception of what post college poverty is supposed to look like. I suppose that's exactly what it is though, considering all of their backgrounds.

    2. @undiepants considering all the backgrounds of those who praise the show for being so "real" and mirroring their actual lives, I would agree with your statement

    3. Rafi/Undie, well stated.

  13. I thought Girls WAS a reality show. LOL

Sounds like a very bad idea, but then again ABC seems to keep having a lot of bad ideas. I have never forgiven them for cancelling V and 666 Park Avenue.

  14. I think Lena dunham is a great writer, and so does tina fey. so, I"m not crazy. girls shows a slice of the lives of upper class 20 somethings in nyc.

the thing is, no one who is experiencing those financial stresses has significant time to write, or the connections that lena had that jettisoned her to the top. thats the sad reality. in season 2 she is dealing w/a stalkerish ex boyfriend.

might I add that brian williams daughter would never have gotten this far if she had not-famous parents, or if she had to support herself when she started out. she's below average acting wise and I don't think she's that pretty. david mamet's daughter, however, is great.

  16. Did ABC and MTV merge or something? Who tha fuck thought this was a good idea. This coming from an huge Girls fan here, but what a rotten idea.

Rafi that is not true at all. All of the people I know that watch the show, myself included, are 22/23 year old undergrads/graduates paying for everything themselves, not relying on the wealth of our parents like you insinuate. You don't have to be well off to connect with the show or share the same experiences as the women on the show. I'm not sure what show you are watching because none of those girls on the show are supported by anyone, other than Shoshanna, and IRC the issue of rent payments, loans, unemployment and underemployment have come up multiple times throughout the first and second season.

  17. Girls is one of those shows I'm just not sure is worth the effort. I wonder how long one as to give it to see if it 'takes' or not.

    1. It took me a while to really get into it, but now it's my favorite show! I think it was just because I haven't watched any shows on HBO before so I wasn't used to that kind of rawness.

If you're used to that though it should only take a few episodes to see if it's for you or not. And the episodes are really short since they are in half hour blocks.

  18. I'd like to see "Girls " to see what the stink is all about. But I'm over the lameness and fucking laziness of reality tv.

  20. Isn't GIRLS basically a reality show for Lena Dunham, I mean she's Fudgy and an exhibitionist.I only watch GIRLS because of Allison Williams (Marnie) she's so Hot! But yeah if ABC does a reality show on GIRLS I think it would be funny, it would be Funnier if it gets better ratings, but unfortunately you can have full frontal nudity on ABC.

  21. Girls does deal with those issues, but in a way that is entertaining. In the episode where Lena's parents fly her home for their anniversary her mother tells her they were too harsh in cutting her off financially and asks if she needs money. Lena's character says no, even though she desperately does need money, since her roommate has called her several times telling her to ask her parents for rent. But her folks have told her they are proud of her for getting by on her own so she can't bring herself to tell them she needs money. Who can't relate to not wanting to let your parents down, even if it wouldn't really be letting them down. I think a lot of hate for this show comes from people either haven't really watched it or had already decided they didn't like it before they watched it and instead of giving it a chance just looked for things that reinforce their initial opinion.

  22. They already did this with The City and Gallery Girls. I'll watch it. I'll watch anything with NYC as the backdrop.
