*snort* I have a friend who only has to read the first four words on that song and will wind up with it stuck in her head for days. Oh Jenni, this one's for you.
I was on a trip once with my youth group (don't judge) and we went to some fast food place with a jukebox. I played Summer and almost everybody in the restaurant started singing. It was awesome.
Bohemian Rhapsody Build me Up Buttercup Piano Man Sweet Caroline That one part of "End of the World (as we know it)" by REM where they sing "LEONARD BERNSTEIN!"
I find singalongs mostly awkward, but I can't keep quiet if Sweet Caroline comes on. Or Take On Me (sadly).
My favourite thing ever is when "Crosstown Traffic" comes on the radio, and guys sing along with the guitar doodle in the beginning. It's quite charming.
David Allen Coe, "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" when in a c/w bar. However, if it's a gay c/w bar, "Looking for a City" by Vestal Goodman. In that same vein, "Dark Lady" by Cher when in any gay bar.
I've never seen anyone sing along with Sweet Caroline.
We had a kid from a 3rd world country stay with us, and I said goodbye with a card that had the song "Hoop there it is", and he went crazy. No matter what continent, everyone knows that.
For me, it's always going to be FEELINGS, wowowowowo, FEELINGS!
@PotPourri - come to Minnesota. People here LOOOOOOOVE "Sweet Caroline". There used to be a bar downtown Mpls that played that as the last song of the night every night.
The other night for the first time in a long time I had music playing while gettin' busy with the man. I started singing to every song. Thought of the Zooey blind, started to laugh and things got awkward from there on.
Haha. I'm pretty sure most of these songs would never be played at a club unless it was a 60 and over place. Umm, maybe something cheesy like "You spin me right round" or "Baby got back"
My husband has been in covers bands for years here (Australia) and in NZ, and every single time everyone sings along to Sweet Home Alabama, My Sharona and anything by Metallica.
Recently started playing Somg Pop - updated version of Name that Tune.
Journey Songs, Air Supply and Billy Joel are the easiest for me to pick up. Had no idea I knew so much Billy Joel, but w/2 much older sisters, their music taste spilled over...lol
And, I hate to admit it but 2 of Taylor Swift's songs from Fearless...the one about the next door neighbor and the Romeo/Juliet one...Sigh...
Like a Virgin Tainted Love Freebird All of the songs above. Music is so powerful and I don't think we should have to decide on ONE particular song. Everyones pick is...Supercalafragelistic..Music is love!
Oh and OT, that new show 'The Carrie Diaries' has a soundtrack to die for! All '80's!
And I left out - all my friends know the same songs. Air Supply is so repetitive that they are easy to pick up - oh and one other - the Grease soundtrack!! Lol
I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." Ladies, when you have a certain amount of alcohol in you the words just come naturally (along with some gibberish.)
I was at an event on New Year's eve at Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. The cover band started playing Joan Jett's "I love rock 'n' roll" and the entire place, with about 1,000 guests, went crazy singing and every server was dancing and singing around the tables. It was impressive when you consider that Atlantis has guests there from all over the world, and all of the staff are Bahamian.
I'm gonna go with Crazy or Cryin-Aerosmith Fly away-Lenny Kravitz Bullet with Butterfly Wings-Smashing Pumpkins(my kids call it the Whale War song) Hey Jealousy-Gin Blossoms
"Pip" and I have performed our choreographed version of Livin on a Prayer across the world, and peeps always sing along. I'm going with the Jersey girls upthread - LIVIN ON A PRAYER!
Is this the real life, or is it just fantasy? Caught in a landslide no escape from reality. Open your eyes, look up to the skies and seeeeeeeeeee. I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy. Because I'm easy come, easy go, little high, little low. Any way the blows, doesn't really matter to me. To meeeeeeeee
Forever and ever I will head bang to this song. I love you Wayans World for bringing that simple pleasure to my life. And Garth just moving his mouth not knowing the words when their singing doesn't really matter, anyone can see, I've based my life existence off of that moment.
I was at a biergarten in Germany with a bunch of other college students and there was a band in lederhosen playing German beer drinking songs that most of our group didn't know. We tried to find a song that we could all sing along to (and by then we were all pretty drunk-- the beer steins are HUGE) and after muddling through a bunch of songs the only song that EVERYONE knew the words to were the lyrics for the theme song to The Beverly Hillbillies.
we lived in a condo when we were first married (before i knew he was lying whore). on sunday mornings one of our neighbors would BLAST "sweet caroline" and sing along. so one time we joined them. they never did that again. guess i had thoughts of the whole complex joining in. makes me smile everytime i hear it now, and i think of that sing-a-long.
The Lion Sleeps tonight. Once took and admittingly drunk bus ride home with my pals and started singing the main part and over the speaker system the driver chimes in with the "a whimba way" bit. Great moment.

ReplyDeleteIf you live in Boston and/or follow the Red Sox, you're ALL too familiar w/"Sweet Caroline", I assure you...
ReplyDeleteAgree w/"Bohemian Rhapsody"; that's probably the all-time champ, esp. for people my age or who were old enough when Wayne's World came out.
I can still only sing it as "badadoosh, badadoosh, do the fandango!"
