I think I did this about a year ago, but it is always fun to revisit it with new readers coming in all the time. First record, or album or tape you bought. Do you still have it? If you switched from vinyl to CD, did you but it again on CD?
Don't remember the first tape I bought, but the first CD was Mariah Carey "Emotions" in 1991. I don't think I have it anymore. I do re-buy albums in MP3 format if the CD is scratched.
I'm the worst with movies though. Every VHS that I've owned, I have since bought on DVD, and now am buying on Blu Ray. I remember Rob Zombie saying that he has pretty much every horror movie ever made on beta, VHS, laserdisc, DVD, and now blu ray. That's totally me!
I don't remember the first but I do remember I had the Beatles' "Blue Album" on the vinyl blue record which was one of my firsts I bought when I was 12 or 13! It was sadly destroyed though when we had the house fire 17 YRS ago but would be a collector's item today.
My first vynil I had was "Xou da Xuxa 1". Well... what can I say, it was a brazilian singer and tv host for kids, lol My first CD was from a brazilian band to, I think I was 12, or 13...
My first tape was either Wilson Phillips or New Kids on the Block, but first CD was Jimi Hendrix 'borrowed' from my dad. I am all vinyl now, and def didn't buy the first two again. However, I just scored the Hendrix LP on vinyl for $5.99 last Friday. Score!

My first was C&C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat" on cassette. I bought it when I was 10 after saving up some lunch money. I don't have it but I'm pretty sure it's still at my parent's pad.
Vinyl, Aladdin Sane, bought it with my 10th birthday money. It had already been out for a few years but I loved it and had to have my own copy. Precocious, me? Never!

We had lots and lots of kids' books that came with a 45 that read the story to you - you know the ones: "You'll know it's time to turn the page when Tinkerbell rings her little bell like this."
But the first real album I remember was the Grease double album - man, my brother and I wore that thing out!
I so vividly remember my brother and his dance to Greased Lightnin'. And I saw that scene not too long ago, and realized that the lyrics to that song are filthy - bwahaha! No wonder our love of Grease made my mom nervous!
I had Grease too! I had no idea how filthy Greased Lightening or lots of the others were until I listened to them again as a grown up. Love that album. I knew all the words, or thought I did, I don't think I called it a p**y wagon. I also had the Go-Go's Vacation, I got it as a CD as well later on.
First one I owned - Thriller, Michael Jackson (with some of his earlier ones with the Jackson 5 added as filler), and Fame (the movie, I think). They were copies though. First ones I bought were (I think) Wham! on tape and Lionel Richie (Dancing on the Ceiling was on it, not sure what the record's called). Thriller I re-bought on iTunes, the others I don't have anymore.
Like all good Canadian girls my age, my first tape was Bryan Adams - Waking Up the Neighbours. I have the album on my computer now, the tape is long gone.
The first music I ever purchased on my own was Poison's first album. I bought it on vinyl from the K-Mart down the highway from us. It was $7 I think. The album itself is long gone but holds a special place in my heart. I will always maintain it was way more punk-influenced than any of their other work and should be considered apart from the rest of their catalog.
That was my second album I think? Was it the one where the cover is four squares with each of them made up in full women's make up? I made my dad buy me that album and I remember him commenting something like " those are some hot chicks " and me laughing being like " Daaaaad.. Those are dudes ! " pretttty sure it was at Kmart too ha!
I believe the first new record album was Aqualung in 1977, and I still have it and play it. Never got it on CD, but I "plan to" burn the record into iTunes.

Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky".It was the 45 and the b-side was Milk Cow... as in "jethro bought himself a milk cow.... and he called her bess" 1969... I was 6. That is no excuse tho. LOL
Shadow Dancin' by Andy Gibb. First LP was Back In Black. And I remember this post from before, cuz I found out who was my age (and how old AuntLicky was) ;)
I got a cassette little boom box (it was pink) from my godmother one year, i think it was '86...with 2 cassette tapes, slippery when wet- Bon Jovi and True Blue- Madonna....shortly after, i bought my first tape-Violent Femmes
I think it was War, U2. I switched over to CDs in my teens and never looked back. Gave the vinyl more or less on permanent loan to my friend Jeff, who is a major collector of vinyl. It's in a better place there.
The Grass Roots LP. Their hit single was "I'd Wait a Million Years". I begged and begged my parents to let me buy the album, and I played it over and over. The lead singer was named Rob something, and I thought he was so cute. off to Google...
When I was 5 my mom got the vinyl of On the Radio - Donna Summer and I was obsessed with it - still an --wanted to change my name to DONNA.I miss them both :(

I never bought any albums - my cousins had a ton of awesome albums like the Three Degrees and Earth Wind & Fire Etc. and my girlfriends had all the cool ones like Bay City Rollers and David Cassidy!! My favorite was the Jackson 5 album my girlfriend owned we played the shit out of that one! As a matter of fact if you ask me who taught me to dance I would say Michael Jackson :)

Years later I bored Ronnie James Dio (RIP) with that story at the first gig I worked in Asia, and he was like "Dude, drink this" as he passed me a bottle of Grey Goose.
My first album was britney's first album on cassette. I thought it sucked and only listened to it a few times after. I think I eventually threw it away.
1st record: The Beatles "Hello Goodbye" single. First album "More of the Monkees". Still have the Beatles single. Lost the Monkees album somewhere along the way (probably from embarrassment as I got older).
Diana G, sure I've told this story before on here, but anyway around 2007 they did a tour in Asia of Heaven and Hell, so it was Ronnie and the rest of the band.
One of my roles was to sort the backstage alcohol. They were back-to-back with Megadeth - who wanted a couple of cases of beer, half a case of wine, etc. for the whole band.
Black Sabbath's was all personalised, and like an alcoholics Amazon list. Ronnie wanted 4 bottles of Grey Goose. I'd scored all the beer (swapped out all the light beer crap for a local craft brewer's selection - which they loved). But they couldn't do the Grey Goose.
When my error came to light, I went to find Mr Dio to apologise. Couldn't find him. Got a phone call from a mate who was out shopping with his wife, telling me he'd burst past them into a duty free store, bought his own, and ran back to the concert venue.
They also consumed most of it before going on to play a really great show. I muttered "How?" as they left the dressing room. Ronnie overheard, turned and said "Been doing it for 35 years mate".
My first big band I worked with, and they were frigging legends. Downhill ever since!
Great story - he truly is a legend. I loved when I would see him on TV interviews saying how his grandma invited the "rock-on" symbol with her fingers. When I saw him, he was touring with Iron Maiden - another amazing band, BTW...needless to say, it was an awesome night. ;-)
First 45s were Jumping Jack Flash and Pacman Fever. My mom made me return Jumping Jack Flash. First albums included David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen and of course I have them on CD.
First album was Pat Benetar's Hit Me with your Best Shot and tape was the Go Go's Beauty and the Beat. Both of them were from my brother on my birthday. I still have the Pat Benetar album (my tape deck ate the tape after listening to it a million times).
Hanson was my first tape and Spice Girls was my first album.
Frufra I had some of those tapes! Those and the Silly Kids Songs with "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" and "There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza dear Liza"
First 45 was the Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand", when I was 6. First LP, a few years later, was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. My musical tastes matured from age 6 to age 10.
New Kids on the Block - Hangin' Tough. My family took me to their concert. I remember being so excited and saying I thought I would faint. To this day they still bring it up, especially around friends, boyfriends.
@jazzy nkotb was my first concert, I was in the 6th grade I think? Someplace out there there is a picture of me and my friend holding our I love Jordan and I love Donnie signs.
@annanaannnaaaa I owned the Debbie Gibson electric youth perfume and sang that song like I wrote it, along with every sad break up song on there.
It wasnt long after my Debbie Gibson/NKOTB days that the posters of the cute boy banders and the two coreys came down and the hair bands went up. I remember having one of Sebastion Bach from Skid Row in just a towel and giving the finger that I hid behind my door so my parents didn't see it.
And yes I traded up most of the tapes that I had..some I couldnt bare to listen to again though :)
English indie Rocker Jack Green 'Reverse Logic' in 1981 on vinyl. Never did come out on CD so I finally downloaded the whole thing From some Japanese fanzite a few years ago.Ipod worthy!!
Oh, boy...this is embarrassing...the first album I ever bought myself was John Denver's Greatest Hits, and I got it at the local discount department store. There was also a Rexall drug store in the town across the Connecticut River in Vermont that had a selection of albums, and I remember buying a bunch over there, too. Some others I got not long thereafter were the Carpenters' greatest hits, Carole King's Tapestry, Elton John's greatest hits, and, sometime in '74-75, Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. The John Denver album is no doubt somewhere in my parents' house, but I've still got all the others in my vinyl collection; the only one I ever got on CD is Court and Spark, and nearly 40 years later, it's still one of my all-time favorite albums--it just gets better and better over time.
My parents bought me the Go-Go's We Got the Beat 45. I did not buy is when I changed to CDs. My first CD was by the Damn Yankees :-/ My boyfriend bought it for me when he bought me my first CD player for high school graduation! Duran Duran albums are the only things I bought on vinyl, CD and MP3 :)
My first tapes were Bob Marley's Greatest Hits and Violent Femmes (along with some goofy casingles that I bought on the same day). I totally remember buying them from The Warehouse - so 80's! I don't have the tapes anymore, but I'm pretty sure I have at least 200 Bob Marley songs on cds that an ex burned for me. Thank you, Sir!
The first album I bought with money I'd earned working part time was INXS self titled. It had a painting of people on a beach on the cover, it was vinyl.
My first vinyl that I bought for myself was The Locomotion, Kylie's version. The first tape I bought for myself was Poison, Open Up and Say Ahh. My first CD was John Farnham, Whispering Jack (the one with 'You're The Voice' on it.
My parents had me when they were 45 and 55. They were also quite religious in a quiet kind of way, and the most rockin thing played in the house until I came along was Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Welsh choirs on quieter days.
My sister was very rebellious and played "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" constantly. Instead of moving toward rock, she played Carole King's Tapestry (which I still know backwards, forwards and sideways) and Simon and Garfunkel (yawn) and broadway musicals (yay).
My second 45 was Tina Charles' "I Love to Love". My old records are around somewhere. The first LP I bought was definitely a Rush album.
First one ever was the Dirty Dancing sound track. Then the Little Mermaid Soundtrack. From there was the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Sound track w/ the " Everything I do" song by Bryan Adams, was so sad to hear that he was a groupie gathering douche!
@Anna, I was *obsessed* with the Beauty & the Beast soundtrack. I can still sing every single song without missing a word. And most of the Little Mermaid soundtrack, too.

I can't remember my first cassette, although I think I still have them all. The first Cd I bought was Chicago, can't remember which one but I loved Saturday in the Park. It was not my first choice but it was on sale and I had little money.
I forgot about Columbia Music House! I signed up with them and BMG so many times.
TLC crazy sexy cool was my first CD. Too many tapes to remember!

That's freakin' awesome! Love DIO (R.I.P.) - I saw him perform around 15 years ago.

ReplyDelete1st record: The Beatles "Hello Goodbye" single. First album "More of the Monkees". Still have the Beatles single. Lost the Monkees album somewhere along the way (probably from embarrassment as I got older).

DeleteDiana G, sure I've told this story before on here, but anyway around 2007 they did a tour in Asia of Heaven and Hell, so it was Ronnie and the rest of the band.
ReplyDeleteOne of my roles was to sort the backstage alcohol. They were back-to-back with Megadeth - who wanted a couple of cases of beer, half a case of wine, etc. for the whole band.
Black Sabbath's was all personalised, and like an alcoholics Amazon list. Ronnie wanted 4 bottles of Grey Goose. I'd scored all the beer (swapped out all the light beer crap for a local craft brewer's selection - which they loved). But they couldn't do the Grey Goose.
When my error came to light, I went to find Mr Dio to apologise. Couldn't find him. Got a phone call from a mate who was out shopping with his wife, telling me he'd burst past them into a duty free store, bought his own, and ran back to the concert venue.
They also consumed most of it before going on to play a really great show. I muttered "How?" as they left the dressing room. Ronnie overheard, turned and said "Been doing it for 35 years mate".
My first big band I worked with, and they were frigging legends. Downhill ever since!
Great story - he truly is a legend. I loved when I would see him on TV interviews saying how his grandma invited the "rock-on" symbol with her fingers. When I saw him, he was touring with Iron Maiden - another amazing band, BTW...needless to say, it was an awesome night. ;-)

ReplyDeleteFirst 45s were Jumping Jack Flash and Pacman Fever. My mom made me return Jumping Jack Flash. First albums included David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen and of course I have them on CD.

First album was Pat Benetar's Hit Me with your Best Shot and tape was the Go Go's Beauty and the Beat. Both of them were from my brother on my birthday. I still have the Pat Benetar album (my tape deck ate the tape after listening to it a million times).

First 45 was the Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand", when I was 6. First LP, a few years later, was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. My musical tastes matured from age 6 to age 10.

ReplyDelete@annanaannnaaaa I owned the Debbie Gibson electric youth perfume and sang that song like I wrote it, along with every sad break up song on there.
It wasnt long after my Debbie Gibson/NKOTB days that the posters of the cute boy banders and the two coreys came down and the hair bands went up. I remember having one of Sebastion Bach from Skid Row in just a towel and giving the finger that I hid behind my door so my parents didn't see it.
And yes I traded up most of the tapes that I had..some I couldnt bare to listen to again though :)

Oh, boy...this is embarrassing...the first album I ever bought myself was John Denver's Greatest Hits, and I got it at the local discount department store. There was also a Rexall drug store in the town across the Connecticut River in Vermont that had a selection of albums, and I remember buying a bunch over there, too. Some others I got not long thereafter were the Carpenters' greatest hits, Carole King's Tapestry, Elton John's greatest hits, and, sometime in '74-75, Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. The John Denver album is no doubt somewhere in my parents' house, but I've still got all the others in my vinyl collection; the only one I ever got on CD is Court and Spark, and nearly 40 years later, it's still one of my all-time favorite albums--it just gets better and better over time.
ReplyDeleteMy parents bought me the Go-Go's We Got the Beat 45. I did not buy is when I changed to CDs. My first CD was by the Damn Yankees :-/ My boyfriend bought it for me when he bought me my first CD player for high school graduation!

My first tapes were Bob Marley's Greatest Hits and Violent Femmes (along with some goofy casingles that I bought on the same day). I totally remember buying them from The Warehouse - so 80's! I don't have the tapes anymore, but I'm pretty sure I have at least 200 Bob Marley songs on cds that an ex burned for me. Thank you, Sir!

My parents had me when they were 45 and 55. They were also quite religious in a quiet kind of way, and the most rockin thing played in the house until I came along was Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Welsh choirs on quieter days.
ReplyDeleteMy sister was very rebellious and played "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" constantly. Instead of moving toward rock, she played Carole King's Tapestry (which I still know backwards, forwards and sideways) and Simon and Garfunkel (yawn) and broadway musicals (yay).
My second 45 was Tina Charles' "I Love to Love". My old records are around somewhere. The first LP I bought was definitely a Rush album.

I can't remember my first cassette, although I think I still have them all. The first Cd I bought was Chicago, can't remember which one but I loved Saturday in the Park. It was not my first choice but it was on sale and I had little money.
