Emma Watson Stopped At JFK - Customs Thought She Was 12

Not for the first time, Emma Watson was stopped at customs at JFK during the Christmas holidays and was asked where her parents or guardian were because she looked too young to be traveling alone. In a series of Tweets, Emma said that this is not the first time this has happened and it took a few minutes before customs believed she was 22 and not 12. Showing the passport probably helps. Bringing out a copy of Harry Potter on DVD, probably not as much. She said it was because she had her hair up and was wearing a backpack. I think it is because unless she is doing some kind of photoshoot like the one above, that people could really assume she is much younger than she is. This is why she is having such a tough time finding parts that get her away from Harry Potter.

  1. I feel her pain! I once got carded to sit in the emergency exit row of the airplane (you have to be 16 to sit there) when I was 24. I had literally just left the airport bar too and laughed my ass off when I realized that was why I was carded.

  2. The last sentence sounds like a reveal to me!

  3. Enjoy it while it lasts, Emma!!

  4. I sometimes feel bad for the Harry Potter kids decades down the road no matter what they are doing Harry Potter will always be brought up.

Then i remember they are loaded.

  5. I got asked for ID the other day for the first time in ages. you miss it when it doesn't happen anymore

  6. Sounds like he was referencing that blind the other day to me too.

  7. I still get carded for rated R movies and I'm 25, not that I mind!

ITA about that last sentence, seems like a reveal.

  8. I looked 14 until I was 30. I got a lot of judgmental looks when I was pregnant with my first and I was 25. She'll be thankful later in life.

  9. She better be eating this up now! There will come a day when no one will ask for her ID.

  10. I'm 31, and when I go into this one liquor store sans makeup the lady is always shocked that I'm as old as I am. I hope that continues for the rest of my life!

  11. she just did a movie with Darren aronofsky ,another with Sofia Coppola and her last movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower has buzz to be nod for best adaptation or screenplay this year!

I coach a swim club that goes up to age 15, and I'm often mistake for a swimmer instead of a coach if I go makeup-free. I'm 21. What's sad is that I actually have the figure of a woman... I won't complain though. I'm a lot more attractive now than I actually was at 15.

I'm not a fan of off-topic threads, but I don't think I've properly introduced myself, so hello to everyone! Been lurking for a while and almost gave up on CDAN because of the DM connection and the ads (I'm a blogger, so I refuse to use ad blockers!) I realized it is the comments that keep me sticking around, though, so here I am joining in.

  13. Well...she should look at the bright side. She's an attractive girl and doesn't have a baby face. She just has a very youthful look. She will age beautifully. It sucks now, but it won't in about 10 years. At least she doesn't have a baby face. I have a friend that has the fat baby cheeks and looks like a little girl facially, but had a smoking body. Now that she's put on some weight...her cheeks have gotten bigger and bigger.

  14. I get carded all the time; I'm 34 in two weeks. Will miss it when it stops. I also never get approached by anyone older than 25 so, swings and roundabouts.

  17. I have the same problem. I'm 23 and I have to show my ID all the times I go out or when I want to do something like open an account. I just hope that when I'm 40 I'll look 30. XD

  18. Welcome to the circus @Liliana!

  19. She needs to land a YA trilogy...by the time she finishes the 3 films she'll have grown..
And looking young is a good thing...

  20. Yep, been there. I'm 31 and everyone thinks I'm no older than 22, and at 22 everyone thought I was in high school. My husband looks really young too. He still gets carded at R rated movies. Ha! I probably would too but he's the one who buys the tickets. It's still funny when people card us and see our birthdays and realize we're both much older than they thought. I didn't like it in my early 20s, but I appreciate it now!

  21. Damn, that last sentence totally sounds like a reveal. I hope it isn't true, I love Emma! I finally got over my jealous rage that she got to play Hermoine and not me.

All those months spent practicing monologues, perfecting my wand movements and spell pronunciation, wasted.

  22. Recently I was almost refused an alcohol sale because the cashier thought I was 17 and my I.D was fake. Granted, my picture was taken over 5 years ago and I looked like a sweet little cherub, not the sometimes ratchet mess I am now. Hey, leggings totally count as pants as long as the shirt covers your butt.

    ReplyDelete
  23. RCB you do look really young! I would have thought you were 19 or 20

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hello Liliana! Ok I'll stop with the multiple postings at once now...

  25. @JSierra - I totally went the leggings/butt-covering shirt/riding boots route today! In my defense, Splendid makes these THICK leggings that aren't even remotely see-through. No shame in MY game.

  26. Oh girls, like others have said, enjoy it while it lasts. And may it last a really long time.

I got carded all the time as a young woman. Right up until I had my first child at 27. I can show you the photo where the transformation began - it's a picture of hubs and I holding the brand new baby when he was about 7 hours old. I still looked young there. By a week later, I had aged five years at least. I also had not slept in that time. Dem babies are 100% worth it, but they steal your youth!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I got carded well into my 30s. No more, though...boo! ;)

Last summer, I was waiting to get into Hurricane Harbor. I was picked to answer a random survey, then the girl asked my age. She did a double take! You look about 30, she said. Made my day!

    (I'm 42, btw.)

I read it as a reveal too. I'm 34 and still occasionly get carded although I gotta admit not as much in the last year or so :( Sally Field had that youthful look forever and now she is rocking, Emma will get her payback in about 30 years!
I too agree nothing wrong w leggings as long as they're thick but you're not...

  29. One time I was at a biker event with my ex, she was 26 and got carded. I told the lady, "She said she's 14, but I don't know I just picked her up in town. Can't ya help me out here?" Shocked would be an understatement for the look on the beer lady's face. Then after she saw my ex's ID, she just stared holes through me as she got our beers.

  30. LOL @ Count Jerkula. <3 u.

  31. I still get carded and I am a ripe 36 year old. However I always laugh when people say "Wow you don't look that old". Ummm, I think that was meant as a compliment. However, let me tell you my sister does NOT appreciate when people think she is my mom. Eeek

  32. If someone stopped me at customs for looking too young. I would spend the next thirty minutes making out with them ...,,,.,..with extreme passionate gratitude.

  33. I miss getting carded. About a decade ago I was asked if I had the student pass to get on the bus (<17). I was early-30s at the time. I guess I don't pass for that anymore ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. First off, they didn't think she was 12. They thought she was a minor.second, if you're going to lift your stories from other sites at least keep the facts straight.

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL @ Count Jerkula

I'm 26 but look a lot younger. People usually guess I'm around 18. I've never minded looking young though. I figure my friends who poke fun at me will be jealous when we're older :)

I also have a friend who's in her mid-30s and looks CRAZY young. She's super short and tiny too. She was on a plane once with her hubby who is in his early 40s. The attendant came over and asked him if she could get a juice or something like that for "his daughter". My friend was like "No thanks, I have everything I need right here" then grabbed her husband and started making out with him. They said the look on the flight attendants face was PRICELESS!

  36. Yeah Amber I need some of those!

  37. I was getting my palm read by a psychic about a year & a half ago, just in time for my 50th b-day, and it was hilarious--he kept looking from my palm to my face, back down to the palm and then up to the face again, with a look of complete bafflement. I figured out what the problem was and told him I was turning 50, and he sighed with relief. "Your hand kept saying 50 but your face was saying 40!" Bless his heart...alas, I can see it a bit more in my face, and esp. around the jawline, but on the whole I like to think I'm holding up pretty well, thanks to having my dad's complexion. (He's 81, and maybe looks 65...)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Count: Very funny! Excellent come back.

I looked young for the longest time and got carded with alarming regularity. Alas no more. Not sure when the old stick hit me but it hit me hard! Although people tell me I look younger than I am I think they're just being nice. Pictures don't lie!

Good for Emma. Youth is very valued in H'wd and the film industry. Means she'll have some longevity I hope for her.

  39. My Goddaughter got married last summer. She's 28 now & still looks about 16. It's a blessing, not a curse.

I love Emma. When she cut her hair is when I truly looked at her as a beautiful woman.

I'm a youthful looking 35.. I get mistaken for mid twenties a lot. My favorite is when I tell people how old my daughter is ( 18 ) and I get this shocked look always followed by " how old were you when you had her ? " and my deadpan response " nine. It was a medical miracle " .. I can only hold a straight face for about three seconds though and always give myself away!

  42. Mikey- reminds me of what happened when I was 23 and 6 mos pregnant with my 2 nd child. The doorbell rang at out house and I answered it. It was a teenage boy, about 14 or so. He looks at me and says,"Is you mother home?"! Well!! I was highly, highly, HIGHLY insulted! I indigitantly said," I am the mother here!" He mumbled something and made a quick getaway. I was fuming!!!!!!! How could he not know I was the mother???!! Now with perspective, I looked about 16 and hardly showed at all with my 2nd child, so it was honest mistake. I was furious then, but I wouldnt be now, lollollol

  43. Emma Watson tweeted about this -- the sole source of the story -- on December 22nd. She flew from England to Zambia on December 15th, 2012, and was back in England, tweeting to Camfed, the charity who flew her to Zambia, on the 21st. She spent the holidays with her family, ignoring her phone and the Internet, according to her first post-holiday tweet on January 2nd.

There's no reason to think she was in New York, or that this happened at JFK. I know that Enty is quoting much-repeated news reports, but somewhere along the way, people writing those stories are just plain making stuff up.

    It's worth remembering.

That's not really that bad of a problem to have. She should do an edgy/different independent film to show some range. Something to get her out of the Harry Potter genre. or she could go with it and do kids films, voices. What's she holding out for? Plus it's not like she hasn't got the money to do whatever she wants creatively.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think Emma Watson is that great of an actress but is she really hurting for parts? It's not like she has not done a thing since Harry Potter ended. Granted, I am sure her competition is the Jennifer Lawerences and Emma Stones of the world, so she might not be the first choice or might not be getting the parts she really wants but how much of that is due to skill rather than looks and previous history.

  48. @whocares The age for traveling alone as an unaccompanied minor for most US airlines is 12.

  49. Thanks Amber! Just ordered a pair. :-)

Back to the topic, when DH & I first got married we moved into a brand new house. The doorbell rang & I answered it ... it was a politician needing signatures for something. Anyway, he asked if my mom was home. I invited him in and promised to vote for him for the rest of his career. He seemed embarrassed by his faux pas but I thought it was very flattering!

  50. Dangit hit return too soon ...

I don't get carded much anymore but when people learn I have four kids they're shocked. I think it helps having a few extra pounds on me. It keeps the wrinkles away. That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

  51. this has been happening to me since jr. high...5'1" and a baby face...annoying...

  52. Oh Mikey that happened to me as well. When I was hugely preggers with Cherub #1 I made hubby take me to the State Fair. I had the worst cravings for a Fletcher's corn dog, and shouldn't have been waddling around the State Fair!

We were at an exhibit looking around and a local highschool spanish class was there, and the teacher kept trying to corral me back in the group. Finally I said "Look at me! Do you really think I am with your group?!" And pointed to my tummy and showed her my wedding ring. I told her thank you for thinking I look young enough to be part of your class, but I am married and 26! We both had a good laugh afterwards.

Now 18 years later, I wouldn't mind having some of that 'youthfulness' again. *sigh*

  53. She was great in "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower"! Hope, she will find more good roles.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Eek, I hope that isn't a reveal.

I was always mistaken for older in my teens. At my part-time job customers would ask what I did at uni. And then when I moved into uni age they would ask how school was. I look my age now but I'm hoping the baby face comes in handy as I venture into my mid 20's.

  58. Both of my parents look considerably younger than their chronological ages, and so do my siblings and myself. Nothing to complain about now, and I know it won't be when I get older.

    Emma, enjoy it!

  59. What really gives age a way are the hands! I have very young looking hands for my age. My manicurist is a decade younger than me, and she is always shocked by how good my hands are for my age.

Ok - I tried to get the Splendid leggings before Xmas but they were sold out. Have you tried the Splendid leggings that are $55 from Piperlime? I thought they were they same until you pointed out the Revolve ones. Piperlime is 20% off tonight and I was going to buy them but now I'm wondering if they suck compared to the more expensive ones
    Time sensitive material!!!!

Oh, and Emma is a cutie. I look young everywhere but my country club chest gives me away. Sunscreen ladies!!! Why did I only put it on my face???????
