Your Turn

Hallmark has apologized for the card posted above and pulled it off the shelves. Appropriate or not?

  1. It's definitely inappropriate, but the card is more than a decade old and produced by a company that was later acquired by Hallmark, not the company itself. A girl found it in some cheap shop and it should have been taken off the shelf long ago.

  2. hell no inappropriate

  3. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Everybody gets so offended in this world.

And who wrote it so grammatically incorrect? "he'd give" and "next year you will"? Hallmark? Really? Tacky all the way around.

  5. faux outrage !!!!! thanks, Caroline for the details.

  6. I guess my thoughts are if you peruse a card store there are choices that are appropriate and inappropriate for your card recipient, so that's why I don't get all the outrage. I think the better description is that the card is in poor taste, but there are SO many cards in any Hallmark or other card store that are in poor taste. This is so stupid.

Holy fuck! While it's true that large breasts and youth get you the attention of men, wealthy and not, it's hardly appropriate to be telling that straight out to children for Christmasake. Certainly not on a birthday card! Why don't we send them a card saying,"Congratulations you've just turned every mother and father in America against you for all time Hallmark! Prostitution is not a good message to send to young girls, you f'ing idiots" Whoever approved this does not belong in the greeting card business.

  8. I agree Susan. Poor taste, but outrage for this is off base.

  9. If I had received that card at 13, I would have died of embarrassment--mostly at having to read the word "boobies" in front of my parents and grandparents.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If you're going to be offensive, at least make sure you're funny (see: Sacha Baron Cohen). This falls way short

  11. I have to admit that if I had seen a card like this, I'd probably buy it as a joke for my brother (who is 36)..mostly in retaliation for the Flock of Seagulls VHS tape he bought for me a few years back.

  12. I'm sure I would hulk out with my fauxrage if I could fucking read it. Jesus, bad design much?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I can't even see what it says; the writing is too small and I don't see too well!

  14. I am sure pimp Mama Kris gives this card to each and everyone one of her little girls when they turn 13! it's like a Kardashian/Jenner tradition! haha

  15. It hasn't been published in the last 15 years. Read 1st comment from Caroline. Geez.

  16. I think it's only bad when giving it to a young girl, just with the whole negative body image, teen girls having almost zero self esteem, and you have to have big tits to get a boyfriend aspect.

Anyone other then the intended audience receiving this card would be quite hilarious. I would give this to all my girlfriends because it is funny. Just not necessarily for a 13 year old.

  17. You're 13 today! If you had a hot girlfriend you would be getting blow jobs and having threesomes. Maybe next year when your dick is bigger.......
I know, I'm going to hell............

  18. It made me laugh, but as a disclaimer I laugh at wildly appropriate things...

  19. I kinda found it funny.

  20. I'd assume that when that card was made, as with any joke card, one's repoire with the recipient would be taken into account. I don't really think it's a thing (especially because this is 15 years too late).

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is a total non-story since the card isn't even manufactured anymore (I think it was released in 1998?).

Seriously, who cares? All this faux outrage over something the company pulled years ago is pathetic.

  22. I think my 13 year old self would have loved to give this to another girlfriend and we would laugh our heads off and then we would talk about that cute guy in our class and whether or not anyone would ask us to couple skate at the roller skating party.

  24. Inappropriate for any child of mine ... I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks it's cute though. Like Courtney Stodden's mom or Dina Logan.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think "outraged" is an overstatement.

People are disturbed because everyone preaches about positive body image and eating disorders yet this card was geared towards a 13 year old. It doesn't matter if it was pulled years ago or not. It still existed and THAT'S pathetic

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah. I could totally see my friends giving this card to one of us who was underdeveloped when we were teenagers, because, well teenage girls are snarky bitches. I was rooting through my bins of memories that my mom bestowed upon me when I got married. And my one girlfriend, who I am still besties with 20 years later, totally made fun of me in every Christmas card all through high school for being a virgin. Seriously. That should be a greeting card.

Anyway, I'm sure many of the moms who are outraged by this have a fake rack, a nose job, a tummy tuck and worship the Kardashians or watch The Bachelor, so this shit really doesn't rattle me. Maybe, our energy would be better spent teaching our daughters on why the philosophy in the card is complete crap.

    ReplyDelete
  27. HAHAHA!!!

The only place I could see that card being sold as a serious card, is Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  28. For a 13-year-old, totally inappropriate. What I find more offensive is the cards written for the "mature" demographic, basically saying "Too bad you're so old and flabby and gassy and need diapers and your dentures are falling out but it's okay because you're going senile and won't remember getting this card right after you read it, anyway," which is what all of them seem to be about. Sheesh!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Definitely NOT appropriate. It's actually telling young girls that the only way they can get a man is if they have big boobies. If they have big boobs, not only will they get a man, but he'll want to give them expensive gifts.

I'm thinking this card was written by a plastic surgeon.

Whoever wrote this card should be shot.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Why is everyone shrugging because it's 15 years old? Because in 1997 this would have been OK? Uh, no.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That card sucks. I want to punch it in the face.

    ReplyDelete

Surely there is a statute of limitations even for those who designed inappropriate cards?

    ReplyDelete
  33. There are more current and pressing women's issues to worry about than a card found in a dollar store that was manufactured 15 years ago by a company that Hallmark bought out. If that is all we have to worry about, well, sigh, nirvana.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Me too Karli!

I was totally ROLFMAO and then BAM! It hit me that my daughter is 13.

But my inner 13 year old thought it was funny.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If Hallmark wants to stay relevant and competitive with online greeting sites, they're going to need to branch out of their safe zone.

    ReplyDelete
  36. For the people saying "just don't buy it": What if some moron decided to buy this and give it to your daughter. You can't control what some idiot might think would be "funny" to give your kid. Definitely should be pulled off the shelves. Teenage girls have enough body issues-they don't need some a-hole confirming them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would rebrand it as a post-breast enhancement surgery card :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think it's horrific but then I wonder if it were meant tongue in cheek. How many 13 year olds had boyfriends in 1998 or even thought about getting diamonds, much less fake tits? I think it would be funny if it aimed at an older audience, like a 40 year old LOL

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's just dumb. No more, no less. Unfortunately 13 year olds fall for a lot of dumb shit.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This is old and a non issue. But, I'm more concerned with the gold digging aspect of it than buying breasts for a girl who hasn't fully matured.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This card is America in a nutshell

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hopefully we as parents teach our daughters and sons that this is pretty much BS. I think that our not buying cards like this, or watching tv shows that send archaic messages like this would be more effective than outright censorship.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Written by Kris Jenner or Dina Lohan I'm sure.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ari:

The reaction is also America in a nutshell, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  45. @ Ari - you know the card was found in a store in Great Britain, right?

I wonder what other kind of dusty old shit that store is selling.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think things that amke fun of "stereo-type" thinking are funny as long as they don't go over board.

I am also the same guy who truly doesn't get hurt when he gets cracked on if its funny, so maybe I just have thick skin.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I give all my family members little kid birthday cards, regardless of age because I think that's funny. I wish I could buy this card for my brother.

    ReplyDelete
  48. hahahaha! so funny! i have a soon to be 14 year old daughter, and just this weekend she was complaining that boys at school only date girls with big boobs. i woud totally buy this for a girlfriend (as a joke, not for their birthday), and i'll show this to my daughter. its funny because its true, and that is stupid. men are ruled and made fools by BOOBS.

    ReplyDelete
  49. in 97 it was inappropriate, in 2012 it's completely relevant.

    times they arrrrre a changin....

    ReplyDelete
  50. lol, I work for a chain of Hallmark stores. We've had more risque cards than that one.

This year the big controversy is over the books "Go the F*ck to Sleep" and "Merry F*cking Christmas".

For some reason the powers that be have pulled the Xmas one but not the sleeping one, lol. Must be selling better.

  52. As the mother of girls I find it disgusting to imply they should have bigger breasts to benefit materially. But pull it from the shelves? Nope. Don't like it- don't buy it.

  54. It is inappropriate now and it was inappropriate in 1998 when the card was issued. This is either evidence that Hallmark did not properly vet the company it purchased or it did and did not care that they put out stock like this.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Stupid. I'd tell my daughters (11 and 9) WHY it was stupid. Then we'd all laugh as it burns in the fireplace.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I had a lot of trouble reading it, so I took it into Photoshop and desaturated it.

    It says:

    You're 13 today!
If you had a rich boyfriend
he'd give you diamonds and rubies.
Well, maybe next year you will -
    when you've bigger boobies!

    Gross.

    ReplyDelete
  57. So Courtney Stodden's mom thought the card said "3" and not "13"?

The sexualization of kids needs to stop. Kids can (and will) make their own boobie jokes, they don't need a card designed, manufactured and sold by adults for it.
