Will & Kate Are Having A Baby

Apparently the friend of Kate Middleton's who leaked news of the pregnancy to the world was actually right. Doesn't mean she will ever be invited to anything again by the royal family but she was right about Kate expecting a baby. The news was confirmed after Kate was admitted to the hospital for acute morning sickness and will be there for several days. That is some serious morning sickness. Tonight will be very busy as the tabloids all scramble to change their covers.

  2. She was probably losing weight and her frail body can't afford to lose any more.

    Good for them!

  3. I hope so. They need to have a baby and move on from the endless speculation.

    1. Vicki, reading your comment made me feel bad..my first thought reading this was that I'm going to a gala they are appearing at on Saturday and now I won't get to see them! Terribly selfish thoughts

  9. Severe morning sickness makes me think it's a girl. I had two boys and never had morning sickness. Yeah, that means nothing but everyone I've known that had girls had morning sickness so that's one of about a thousand theories you'll be hearing over the next seven months.

    1. I had severe, all day sickness through to 28 weeks, where it eased off to just morning sickness n my afternoons were filled with reflux... And I had a boy.

    2. Morning sickness from 12 weeks right up to the morning I delivered. Bouncing baby boy.

  10. Congrats to the family! This doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever, but I can't help but feel happy for them.

Wish they'd had more time to themselves before they started to breed, but that's just me ;)

    1. @EmEyeKay - I was thinking that too (about them having more time to themselves) but I'm guessing there was A LOT of pressure on them to have a baby.

  12. Hyperemesis gravidarum isn't something to take casually, so while I'm very sorry to hear she's in the hospital, I'm glad she's being taken care of. It's a truly nasty business that goes way beyond ordinary morning sickness; it can cause severe complications, and women and their fetuses have been known to die from it (Charlotte Bronte was apparently a victim). No one is quite sure what causes it, although hormonal changes are a popular guess, and there's isn't a cure per se, but there are measures than can be taken to alleviate the worst of the effects. (Apparently there's some suggestion that pot can help here, as it does w/nausea due to chemo, so smoke 'em if you got 'em, Kate!) My mom had this when she was pregnant w/my brother; she was much sicker carrying him than she ever was w/us girls, and is convinced that it was precisely because the fetus was a boy that she was so sick. (Yes, she finally got better--she swears that Vitamin B injections from an old-school family doctor whose wife had also been terribly sick were what turned her around--and my brother came through just fine.)

Anyway, congratulations to Will and Kate, and sweetie, I hope you're feeling much better soon!

    3. I had morning sickness with all my pregnancies but the one I had hyperemesis with was with my twin girls apparently its quite common with twins. I was hospitalised 5 times with it as I couldn't even sip water or suck on ice cube without vomiting. It finally eased off around 5 months though I still had the odd bout. My babies were born healthy since they drained me lol x

    4. My beat friend just had her baby boy last mint after having HG. this was her second pregnancy and she also had it with her daughter (but it was more severe with the boy) she got hospitalized and @robin she was told by her GP that weed could help but she just couldn't do it. I would never wish it on anyone and take my hat off to women that have survived it

In a weird way I hope with kate's pregnancy HG is discussed more openly (certainly is on morning shows here) because when people would tell my friend "oh it's just morning sickness" *I* wanted to knock them over!

Rant over. And congrats to will and Kate! (yeah I'm monarchist! Lol)

  14. back in the dark ages (the 60's and 70's) many doctors treated hyperemesis by putting mom in a dark room with IV fluids, with no visitors, and no way to wash out their mouths if they puked, no phone so they couldn't call anyone for 'sympathy' and that was that. they felt it was an emotional problem and paying it any attention only made it worse.

thank heaven THOSE days are gone.

  19. This news made me smile!

Hopefully the horrid morning sickness will quickly for her.

I have a girlfriend who had this, and she had a home health nurse come daily to give her IVs to rehydrate her. And she had a boy.

I felt fantab with my boys, looked great and glowed, with my daughter, everyone asked me if I "was feeling okay".

  20. timebob I think the UK would only "tolerate" Charles as king, no enthusiasm. And they would never really embrace Camilla. I don't like Camilla at all and if they skipped Charles it would be poetic. Plus tabloids have been saying Charles treats the help terribly - there have been lawsuits and settlements.

  24. Best wishes to the happy couple.

And I hope this spurs the British Parliament to change the laws of succession so that the first born child inherits, instead of the first born boy. I've heard there's been some discussion - so what's the holdup?

  25. I read on one of the royal blogs that Camilla has been very nasty to Kate, and has even gone over to their place when William is away to tell her off.

Also, that Prince Andrew's daughters, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, complained to the Queen that Kate wasn't curtsying to them...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I really like these two, much health & happiness to them both.

    ReplyDelete
  27. SusanB: I think that's already been taken care of, so boy or girl, s/he will be next in the line of succession after her/his dad.

Nance: I hadn't heard it was THAT bad, but yes, my mom mentioned how the other family doctor was convinced that it was "all in her head" and that she was "subconsciously rejecting the baby," which pissed her off to no end--she nearly lost it several times (somehow managing to halt a seeming miscarriage/bleeding through sheer stubborn pigheadedness & determination), so this was very much a WANTED pregnancy...she just wanted to stop puking, was all. Fortunately, the other doctor, whose own wife had been so sick, understood perfectly and was far more sympathetic and helpful. (Also, didn't Maria Shriver have this problem during one of her pregnancies? I could swear I remember hearing about it...)

  29. As a survivor of Hyperemesis Gravidarum my heart goes out to her. I'd never even *heard* of it until I had it. Despite 2 powerful antiemetics, I vomited at least 15 times a day all the way thru my pregnancy from week 5. Because they won't allow you water in the hospital, I was vomiting stomach acid thru the delivery.

It's no joke. It kills people. It's also likely to get you thrown up on if you suggest saltines, ginger, or any other "normal" morning sickness solutions. Ask my ex-coworker who told me that if I just 'thought about it hard enough' it would go away... Ruined a pair of her shoes intentionally.

I also managed to get a torn esophagus (too much stomach acid going the wrong way) and there's nothing quite as surreal and terrifying as vomiting blood at 2 a.m. when you are 5 months pregnant.

Praying she just got dehydrated and doesn't have HG. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

FYI - the anti-nausea point is on the inner wrist about two finger breadths up from the wrist crease, for any mommas needing some self help. Google P6 acu point.

So do we think she was preggers when the nekkid pics were taken or could that have been conception weekend? Tacky question but that's where my mind went.

    2. @ I mean 3 weeeks FORWARD. I think the Scandal happened around early Sept and if shes 11 weeks she would have conceived early October. Oh well it was fun to guess. OR shes lying about how far along she is so people don't make the connection with those topless pix!!

  43. Yay! I'm glad that they're pregnant. She's been looking grumpy and pissed off lately in public appearances. Plus she looks like she gained a teeny tiny bit of weight in the face lately. Usually she looks like she needs to eat, and I'd imagine that the horrible sickness put a strain on her already frail body. It's not like she has alot of extra fat to live off if she is puking constantly. Good for her though, it must be kind of a relief, and must be such a happy event for the Brits!

  50. I sincerely hope that all goes well. I've had friends suffer from this HG and it is awful and very dangerous. 52. I was far more sick with my second child (a boy) then my first (also a boy). I lost 10 pounds during my first trimester, and gained less than 20 total by the end.

She must be under tremendous stress. Hope she'll be okay.

We're not that backward; we've had a female prime minister (1979-1990) and gay civil partnerships have been legally recognised since 2004. I think that's quite good going really.

  54. The holdup on the reform of succession laws wasn't the UK Parliament. The Queen is head of state of 25 or so other Commonwealth nations and they had to get each one to sign off on the change. I read that it is a done deal as of Oct 2011.

  65. Both my sister and my Daughter spend most of their pregnancies in the hospital. My sister for severe morning sickness and my daughter for constant preterm labor. My Daughter only gained 5 lbs and had her Daughter at 7 1/2 months. Wonderful baby girl. My daughter could wear all her normal clothes and people did not know she was pregnant. She ate like a horse and had no morning sickness. My sister could not even keep water down and gave birth at 7 months. He grew up to play Football in Iowa (College). I had NO morning sickness just constant heartburn. I had to carry peppermints and saltines everywhere.

I am happy for them. I like good news.

  66. I hope Kate feels better soon! I had hyperemisis with my son and was in the hospital for a week. The throwing up stopped at exactly six months, but it was the worst time of my life. Of course my wonderful baby was worth it, but I feel terrible for anyone who ever has to deal with this. She must be feeling pretty bad if she's in the hospital and already announced it. Cheers to a healthy baby though!

  67. @solarpower - thanks... It's the short version, I try not to go too into depth b/c I was the exception not the rule. I don't know if I would've pushed on getting pregnant if I'd known ahead of time this existed. But it was worth it. My daughter is the heart of my world.

@Rox - despite birth complications and near death? Both my daughter and I are happy and thriving today. A good hospital and doctor made the difference. I'm sure Kate & baby will have the best the UK has!

@iheartgoss - much love and sympathy to you! Wishing you a short duration of symptoms and a happy & healthy rest of it. Congrats! And seriously, just throw saltines like daggers at anyone who suggests them more than once! :-)

(SIGH).....GMA sent Lara to England just to stand in front of (the hospital?) and report the pregnancy. This is going to b an effing nightmare of endless media coverage...../

  69. I am a bit surprised they're releasing so early - I didn't tell anyone but my husband and best friend before 3 months (the "magical miscarriage past" date that stupid book told me about). But if she's in the hospital for HG, they probably couldn't keep it under wraps.

I *do not get* the British dislike of her. She's lovely and by most accounts, very charming. She reminds me of Queen Victoria (the first, the Queen Mum) - I just watched The King's Speech (there is an upside to being under the weather - Netflix, knitting, purring lap kitty, tea) and was very impressed with Helena Bonham Carter's role. I googled and wiki'ed the hell out of QV1 and wow!

    ReplyDelete
  70. "She reminds me of Queen Victoria (the first, the Queen Mum)"

The Queen Mum was not Victoria. She was Elizabeth (Bowes-Lyon).

And there is negative British sentiment regarding Kate? I've never heard of that, and I'm a fairly ardent Anglophile...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anyway, I also adored THE KING'S SPEECH and I enjoyed the portrayals of the Royal family. It seems that I've heard that Queen Elizabeth (current) was a fairly cold parent, but her mother Elizabeth and her father Bertie seemed very warm and loving to Elizabeth and Margaret, didn't they?

Supposedly William and Harry also got a real kick out of their great-grandmother, who apparently had a wicked sense of humor. It's always nice to near about the human side of the Royals, no?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Sorry, I was still on cold meds when I typed Victoria - meant Elizabeth!

Every article I've read on DM or other sites about Kate Middleton, there are a bunch of snarky comments about her being a commoner, her family "fame-seeking" (esp after the Pippa book disaster), etc. One of my UK friends said Brits are looking at her as the next Diana. (Which is sucky, because Diana got the short end of that stick.)

The King's Speech was soooo wonderful, I can't believe I missed it the first time 'round. It came out shortly after my surgery, so I was out of it for a while. Missing a movie starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush? Oh yes, I was definitely on pain meds!!

Elizabeth 1 was, from what I've read, a very personable lady. She refused Bertie's marriage proposals twice, not because she didn't want to marry him, but because she didn't want to live the "royal life." They both doted on their daughters (the scene in the movie where mom tells the girls that the palace will have plenty of room for their toy horses made me laugh with delight).

I, too, wonder why Elizabeth 2 was such a cold fish, but <3 the Royals.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Heheheh, I thought you might have actually meant E, not V. Just clarifying. ;-)

Royal-watcher here, too. I second everything you said, except that I didn't realize the fame-seeking part. Which I suppose makes sense. (Not that she IS, or even her family is, but that folks over there might think that).

Feel better with your cold. :-)

  74. @Robin please don't encourage pregnant women to smoke pot! Especially during the first trimester when most birth defects occur!

I really don't have a problem with pot unless it completely interferes with your life or leads you to do/get addicted to harder stuff (i.e. Amanda Bynes). As a nurse I have just seen too many babies that are born with issues from mothers who used while pregnant, or who are even withdrawing themselves! Super sad.
