Miley Cyrus Sings Jolene
I doubt you will hear any Dolly Parton covers on Miley Cyrus' new album. Back in the summer though before she decided she was punk, she covered one of her godmother's songs and did a really good job of it. The new version she is recording is called "Jolene Is The Anti-Christ"
So when are we gonna talk about Miley and Liam's maybe wedding that is all over DM?
ReplyDelete*I am totally stalling. Boo to work. Yes to gossip!*
I just looked for the story on DM and the rings are very suspect. Unless it's a cry for attention I'd say they sealed the deal.
DeleteSidenote: Did you see those beetlejuice pants she was wearing?!
I don't care what anyone thinks, I love Miley.
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteMe three!
Delete@ashlea me four lol, and i love everything about her haircut
DeletePoor thing she's so confused...
ReplyDeleteWhere's JoleneJolene?!
ReplyDeleteThis is a damn good cover. Way better than the "Lilac Wine" cover she did. That was painful.
Wow, I'm impressed! I didn't know she could sing like that. OT, but another cover that's worth checking out on YouTube is Evan Rachel Wood covering 4 Non Blondes "What's Up." Linda Perry tweeted the link a while back and said she thinks Evan sings it better than she did!
ReplyDeleteMy Gosh I never realized she was that good. Props to Miley.
ReplyDeleteI agree with @ashlea... I love Miley... even when she is just being Miley haha So what she is experimenting with her identity... isn't that what your 20's are for? We just all lucked out because we didn't have huge amounts of money and publicity when we experimented...........well, I guess I would have liked to have the money, but I probably would have been 1000x the mess she is right now, if I did
ReplyDeleteI gotta hand it to that Chipmunk, she keeps trying to make anything work.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm impressed-I actually liked it!
ReplyDeletelol @disco, I automatically thought of JoleneJolene too!
She's a talented singer. I like her too. My daughter is 16 and "we" grew up with Hannah Montana and all things Miley, so I've got a soft spot for her always.
ReplyDeleteThat song is hauntingly beautiful and something about it always makes me tear up, even when Miley sang it. She should stick to that sort of singing cause she actually sounded like a legit singer there.
ReplyDeleteNo one compares to Dolly and her tatted titties though.
That was...actually pretty good.
ReplyDeleteShe is talented. No question about it. Lucky young lady.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a Miley fan by any means...and it might be that because this particular song has special meaning for me I'm a bit prejudiced... but simply put, WOW.
It's things like this, when talent shines through that make you wonder precisely what her team was thinking when they told her "yeah, edgy is the way to go..."
Side note to Dolly:
now is the time to stage an intervention. You can still save her.
Show her that talent wins out over flash in the pan publicity.
Miley has the pedigree in her godmother and the singing chops to pull off some heartfelt country- she should stick with what she's good it and have a career that embraces her southern roots.
ReplyDeleteI agree I think it's just an attention grab, or just trying to play with the media. Just because you were a ring on your left hand doesn't mean you are married. It can just mean you are wearing a ring. And it was a little too posed in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteWhen Miley gets married it's going to be a hillbilly coronation.
Real good.
ReplyDeleteA pity that the discovery phase she is going through is only taking her into skanky and vulgar places. Either she ll spiral down or she ll be very, very ashamed later on.
And she obviously can do a lot better. This cover is just great.
To wash the taste out of your ears:

It's pretty normal that she's trying out new looks. She was raised Christian/Country/Good girl and now she is rebelling in to punk rock/hypersexualized rebel. Like that's NEVER been done before. She's just experimenting. Watch her become a mother of four teaching sunday school by the time she's forty.
ReplyDeleteThat was bloody brilliant.
ReplyDeleteLets hope Miley is just going through her self descovery phase (admit it, we all did) and comes through it stronger and ready to show us her real singing talent.
She did a good job, but nothing beats Dolly singing it.
ReplyDeleteAgree!
DeleteNot bad! I liked the whole setup. it worked for her and she worked it. I've never been a Miley fan and I have forbidden all things Hannah Montana but I'll give her credit where credit is due.
ReplyDeleteShe should seriously stick to country music. She has the talent for it. No one can dispute that.
ReplyDeleteWho knows if she's married or if it's just some publicity stunt. Guess we'll find out in the next couple days.
I've often wondered why with her country roots she never embraced the whole country music scene. I think she could have a decent career given her dad's contacts.
ReplyDeleteI miss that little potato on top of her head.
ReplyDeletePOTATO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great song, and she did it justice. I also like the White Stripes version, but there is something extra powerful when sung by a woman
I don't mind Miley, I think she's just fine. However, I just don't enjoy her voice. She's much more of a creation than a vocalist.
ReplyDeleteShe sang it well but I'd have preferred a bit more emotion. But that's just a matter of taste.
ReplyDeleteAwesome. That girl needs to make some more music. I think she's just going through a phase. Anyone else want to see stupid footage of themselves at 19? I sure as hell don't, glad I wasn't famous.
ReplyDeleteShe's good.
Mindy Smith does a version of Jolene that is slow and absolutely haunting.
ReplyDeleteMiley is a really good singer. She should get back to making an album of good songs with a band.
And I bet her fiance hates her new haircut.
I really like how her voice has developed.
ReplyDeleteCommenting before reading comments, so sorry if anyone mentioned it, but you guys really need to check out her singing Lilac Wine. It gave me chills, she did great.
I loved how she eye-rolled her way through this song (please don't take my man?)and sang the shit out of it at the same time. Team Miley all the way!
ReplyDelete@disco idk why but I really enjoyed Lilac Wine. I have never liked how her voice sounds and that song was the first one where I thought she might actually have a decent singing voice. I also really like Locked out by Bruno Mars right now soooo some of my music taste is pretty questionable.
ReplyDeleteI like boho Miley so much more than punk Miley.
The song does play well with her voice. I just wish she could (or would) drop out of the spotlight long enough for us to forget the tabloid Miley. I really think it would help reestablish her as a serious singer and not just a bimbo with some voice training.
ReplyDeleteWow. Got chills. Miley, please, more of this.
ReplyDelete1. I like her, despite my best efforts. 2. Her voice is great and she sang that song very well. 3. I give any one props who survived paternity from the douchenozzle that bombarded us with Achy Breaky Heart and a mullet that won't die. I will never like BRC, but I'm willing to give Miley the benefit of her talents. And fwiw, I couldn't care less about the antics of a 19 year old, based solely on my behavior as a 19 y/o. And yours and theirs. Anyone who was immaculately assembled at 19, missed out on some really good times, and if you weren't, judging her is vainly hypocritical.
ReplyDelete@JSierra - I'm probably just super biased toward the Jeff Buckley version of it. But she sounded soooo flat on it to me and some of her enunciation is annoying.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. No one can touch Jeff Buckley, period.
DeleteAnd Nina Simone's "Lilac Wine" is glorious.
ReplyDeleteI love Miley's voice. I wish she would sing more country, a la Carrie Underwood.
ReplyDeleteWow color me impressed! I would say she did Dolly proud on this one!
ReplyDeleteI too am most surprised. I heard her sing once a long time ago and she was horrid. This is much better!
ReplyDeleteYeah. She has some voice! I am impressed. It was really good.
ReplyDeleteDayum Miley does have a voice on her! What an incredibly masterful vibrato. I see a long and interesting career in front of her. I'm sure this song had some personal meaning for her, given the suspected blinds of Liam cheating and/or Miley jealously guarding him. Please Miley, never put your hair up like that again, it's hideous and does nothing for you. So what if it's comfortable and keeps your hair out of your face? It's painful to be beautiful honey, you should know that by now.
ReplyDeleteI loved that. She'd do good with alt-country, if she tried it (IMO).
ReplyDeleteShe has a decent voice; I just wish they wouldn't auto tune the hell out of it.
ReplyDeleteShe did a good job with Jolene.
@Disco I definitely need to check out those versions, all I have heard is the Miley one. And I love Nina Simone so I feel like I will be doing a complete 180 about Miley's version once I give that one a listen.
ReplyDeleteTechnically perfect - she has a great voice and is a fairly good interpreter, even though she looks like she'd beat Jolene's face in before she'd let him take her man (the greatness of Parton's performance and covers by singers such as Mindy Smith is that you totally believe the plea/cri de coeur behind the lyrics).
ReplyDeleteToo bad Cyrus is no longer playing to her strengths.
Wow, I'm impressed too. How awesome is that band of hers? They rocked it.
ReplyDeleteMindy Smith does a great Jolene cover that puts me in tears nearly every time I hear it.
Can't help but like this kid, who really is just a kid. She killed this song, and who would've ever thought we would miss the top knot?
ReplyDeleteSunny ITA about the white stripes
ReplyDeleteJolene is my 8 year old and my favorite song .. I remember when he first heard it he was about five and he had this sad haunted look after he first heard it and said " mama.. Did Jolene really take her man away ? " .. It was priceless .. Now he sings it all the time and wants to write a follow up song because he thinks there needs to be a second part.
wow
ReplyDeleteUnknown @ 9:31 - Totally my story. Lol.
ReplyDelete@JSierra why the hell would Bruno Mars be questionable? He's freaking beyond amazing talented! WTF
ReplyDeleteShe would kill country music. if smiley was on her game Taylor would be snatched outta here
ReplyDeleteYep, say what you will, Miley's got talent. Agreed, if she'd just get her sh*t together she could be huge.
ReplyDeleteY'know what? I like this.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this, she certainly hassle talent than her achy breaky dad. And I agree with those who have said she is just being a normal rebellious girl, she hasn't done anything that bad and if there were paps around every time I got trashed at 19, it would have been much worse than this. That said, Edgy!Miley makes me laugh and I think she should stick with country.
ReplyDeleteHassle? That should be has more!
DeleteJust listened to the Mindy Smith version and it was awesome!
ReplyDeleteWith no sarcasm, or tongue in cheek, loved it. I think her next incarnation will be country singer.....of course, after running through whatever crazy teenage rebelliousness she's going through. Fingers crossed she's just having a normal identity crisis that goes with that age (and in her case, with all that f'ing money)...
ReplyDeleteShe totally ripped of "Bands in the Backyard" (bitby.tv) @bitbyphilly tweeted her last summer to come do one of their "backyard sessions" while they knew it was a total longshot and didn't really expect a response. They didn't expect her to rip off their idea either!!
