Katie Holmes Has Star Power
Right now might be the time that Katie Holmes' star is burning brightest and according to The New York Daily News it is her star power that is keeping her play alive on Broadway. Apparently it is so bad that there would be no way it would ever stay open, but that Katie Holmes keeps bringing in crowds who want to see her. It is more of a curiosity thing rather than a wow she is a great actress thing. Of course you could just hang around the Whole Foods in Chelsea and wait for her to show up and save yourself the money and the really bad play. I think it is pretty incredible that she has managed to keep a play open. Are there that many people who are fascinated enough by her that are willing to fork over money to see her in something bad. They didn't when she was in bad movies but I guess since a play is live and in person they will. What she needs to do is a one woman show and just talk about what everyone wants to hear.
Have any NYC readers seen this ? Also curious about the new Mamet play which is apparently closing soon ?
ReplyDeleteHer and Kathie Lee should team up on a play.
ReplyDeletetrue or not, i think katie's seen as heroic. she's an escapee from a crazy cult. she stood up tom cruise---still a hollywood heavyweight. she didn't get dumped unceremoniously like nic did. she took charge and did the dumping.
ReplyDeletepeople admire that. i think she's seen by many as someone who was naive, but finally gutted up and did what needed to be done. so it doesn't surprise me.
and she may have been in some crap movies, but watch 'pieces of april.' she was great in that movie. that movie made me a fan.
Honestly, yes, I'd pay to see her live in this play. I am just that curious. But a one-woman show! Oh man. If she just took audience questions? She could make enough money to life high for the rest of her life AND pay for lawyers to fight Tommy's lawsuits, haha.
ReplyDeleteI saw her in HIMYM last night and I have to say that she was cute and charming ala Dawson's Creek.
ReplyDeleteI say, good for her.
I saw her last time she was on Broadway - she sucked. John Lithgow was wonderful and she came across as totally miscast. I would not go see her again, particularly since the show isn't doing well anyway.
ReplyDeleteI can't see her as having a lasting career. She's hit and miss to me. Her big mistake was marrying Tom thinking it would help her career. It was just taking off on its own, and her lock down after marriage probably derailed her big chances.
ReplyDeleteThere is a big difference between a great actor and a great movie star. Some (Sharon Stone and Joan Crawford come to mind) are both, while others are pure "movie star" with all the glamor and allure. Or Glamour and Allure and People and Life and OK! and Paris Match and NY Times and --
ReplyDeleteKatie has movie star magic, even if she doesn't really have an impressive body of work to gesture to. She's loveable, she positioned herself as everyone's love interest from Dawson's Creek, and that marriage catapaulted her into eternal fame.
I just do not like her.
ReplyDeleteI hate how she talks, for one it sounds like she has a mouth full of stuffing and two, she has that innocent little girl voice, annoying as hell.
ReplyDeleteIt's a Theresa Rebeck play. You couldn't pay me to sit through one, whether it's Alan Rickman or Katie Holmes in it. The reviews I've read of her performance aren't bad - supposedly she's far better cast in this than the Miller play - but the play itself is pretty awful. Supposedly, she and the awesome (and awesomely named) Norbert Leo Butz are the only redeeming qualities about the whole production.
ReplyDeleteThe reviews have been mixed, most aren't panning the play just calling it "meh", and most are applauding Katie's performance. It drives me insane how often Enty misconstrues what he re-reports from other gossip sites.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they means star-power in the sense she can go on the talk show circuit for free advertising. Recently I have seen her on a few shows and she does come off as nice and cute when being interviewed.
ReplyDeleteI happen to have a voice like Katie. I'm an adult (26), and really can do nothing to change it. If it annoys, plug your earssssss!
ReplyDeleteI'd rather bump into her at Whole Foods. A trip there costs as much as a Broadway play and at least I'd get some groceries out of it.
ReplyDeleteShe should enjoy it while she has it.
ReplyDeleteI saw this play when it debuted in Cincinnati. It contains lots Cincinnati in jokes, and I don't think it will play well any where else.
