Kansas City Chiefs Player Kills Girlfriend - Kills Self

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend this morning and then drove to Arrowhead Stadium where the Chiefs play and committed suicide in a practice facility at the stadium. The stadium is in lockdown and a game is scheduled there for tomorrow.

  1. Last I heard, his girlfriend was in critical condition ... but still alive.

    Tragic either way.

  3. What an asshole. As if shooting and killing your girlfriend isn't awful enough, you have to go an kill yourself in such a public way to forever spook your teammates and fans?

  5. I suspect the choice to go to the stadium to commit suicide arose out of some 'final goodbye' to everything he had just cost himself. His legacy won't be his NFL records or career, it will be this. He threw away a life a lot of people would kill to protect.

Hoping the GF makes it through.

  6. I'm from KC and my husband is a chiefs fan so we've been watching this all morning.

He drove to the stadium and talked to some coaches before killing himself... in front of the coaches...

He also killed his girlfriend in front of her mother.

I am a panthers fan - we are playing there tomorrow.

  7. This is a tragedy. My prayers are with the girlfriend's family. I am curious to know if there was a long history of domestic violence between the two and if his coaches knew he was capable of doing such a thing. Did he have a history of depression? so many questions. :(

  9. I think it was HIS mother who witnessed the shooting of the gf.

  11. And I can't even imagine how the mother feels right now. To not only lose your daughter, which is traumatizing enough, but to see it happen... I can't even imagine...

  13. Unfortunately a lot of pro football players have been taking steriods, even in this day and age, since HS. Coaches in HS and college look the other way, in many programs they know in advance of testing, etc. And these guys, who often come from not-so-hot family backgrounds, have little training for dealing with instant riches and celebrity status. The guys who make it and stay there usually have at least one strong parent and were raised knowing someone cares. The ones who blow their money or get involved with drugs and have problems often weren't raised with the stability that provides mental health. This is such a sad story. I feel awful for the families involved and the staff who witnessed this, as well as his teammates. A guy with this much money feels this is his only option - how tragic, for everyone concerned.

  14. This is a terrible thing and I feel for the families and that little girl as she grows up without parents. That is something that child should never have to go through.

As far as people wanting to blame concussions or steroids (w/o proof mind you)you have to think this happens everyday with normal people. The % of people that this happens to day to day vs the NFL shouldn't be very different. So my point is before we try and find a quick reason or excuse let's realize sometimes it's in our wiring or nature to occasionally snap. (sorry for the rant just seen a lot of blame today that I just don't feel fits yet.)

  15. How awful. What is going on in this world? What could have possesed him to do this?He seemed to have everything going great..new baby,career.sad.My prayers are with the family.

  16. Seems to have been HIS mother who was there but when she made the 911 call she said her daughter had been shot, hence the confusion. That's according to the most recent report I've seen, anyway.

  17. So sad. Ashley's link makes it even sadder - happy mom, smiling dad, cute "WTH" baby face. :(

AFA steroids - I was on a medium dose of prednisone and it turned me into a small tan version of the incredible hulk. I would go from normal to "get the h* outta of my way RIGHT NOW" in minutes. Steroids of any flavor fall into the immuno-suppressant field, and immune system deficiencies can cause/elevate depression/depressive episodes. It's a nasty cycle.

Whatever the case, thoughts & prayers to the families and the little one. :(

  18. This reminds of of the Chris Benoit affair in the WWE right before they supposedly started cracking down on steroids in professional wresting. Really sad whatever the reasons.

  20. So much judgment when we don't know all the facts.

I do agree that he doesn't deserve our sympathy but we don't know what happened. What if he had an anuersym, a brain tumor or something? Unlikely, true but we don't know. I prefer not to judge until we do know. If we ever do.

Much love and prayers to the girlfriend's family, his mother, and the sweet baby left an orphan.

  21. My gosh, they were so young...how terribly sad and tragic. An article in a Long Island paper (where he's from) stated his girlfriend had gone to a concert that night, came home late, and that's what started the argument.

I don't think steroid use is as common in the NFL anymore; the thing that keeps getting players suspended is Adderall, which is considered a performance enhancing drug, since it's an amphetamine. The Bucs suspended Talib for four games; he's now with the Patriots. The Seahawks currently have BOTH of their starting cornerbacks on a four game suspension because of Adderall. It's a HUGE problem in the NFL right now.

That being said, I don't want to speculate on why this happened. Prayers to the sweet little baby, now without parents. Belcher's mom currently has custody.
