Assault Rifle Sales Soar
Everyone thinks assault rifles will be banned or harder to obtain over the upcoming months or year so after the Sandy Hook shootings there has actually been bigger sales than ever for assault rifles. People who don't even probably want one are out buying them. People who have never bought a gun are out buying them. What are they going to do with them? The NY Daily News has a piece today that is a first person account of a man who bought an assault rifle the day after the shootings. He lives in NY and it took him 5 minutes and cost him just under $1000 to get the last one in the store. You can read just how easy it is to buy one, right here.
Enty, I think you're just trying to start fights in the comments.
ReplyDeleteHere is how the comments on this one are going to go:
ReplyDeletePoster 1: We need stricter gun laws.
Poster 2: Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Poster 3: But the guns make it so that MORE people are killed by a single person
Poster 4: You people in the US are so obsessed with guns!
Can we just skip all that and enjoy our coffee? :)
So, so true. I live in Texas so the conversation in general is hard to avoid, but after Friday, its non-stop.
DeleteGood. It should be non stop. 20 fucking kids died. Unfortunately people won't be talking about this enough in the coming weeks as this story fades. And it will.
Delete@*karen* - Right!!! I don't even have my popcorn today.
ReplyDeleteyeah, enty is trolling. ill put an opinion column here, but not a big fan of these loaded posts.

ReplyDeleteMy only commentary in this thread:
ReplyDeleteI am literally shaking my head. We are a nation of idiots.
We are better than this.
Wow, Cathy, good work. Enjoy your coffee, and have a great day, everybody! Do something nice for someone today - spread kindness!
ReplyDeleteditto to Cathy and everybody above.
DeleteMorning ladies, I agree. This is too loaded a question. No pun intended. Let's just skip this one.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Karen - Enty's just trolling for hits on his site. I won't click on this again. It's time to go back to gossip!
ReplyDeleteRecipe swap?
ReplyDeleteThat reporter went to a store that is 10 minutes from my house. The area I'm in is considered as safe as any NYC suburb, with robberies being the main crime. We have had maybe two shootings in the past 40 years (and y'all have heard of them both).
ReplyDeleteKnowing that the residents in my community were out stocking up on these after what's happened makes me nauseous. What are people thinking? For what reason does a stockbroker or pediatrician in the suburbs need an automatic weapon?
Hijack!! Such smart people here. =)
ReplyDeleteGood job, Cathy!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy
ReplyDelete@Cathy - ITA!
ReplyDeleteIs everyone getting through all of their holiday movies? I did Miracle on 34th St and A Christmas Carol with Reginald Owen. Going to have to do double headers for the next few days to get them all in!!
Um, what exactly constitutes an 'assault rifle' anyway?
ReplyDeleteGawker actually has a story and a commenter gave the break down. *WARNING, I'M NOT AN EXPERT*near as I could tell an assault rifle is a continuous fire, self-feed (bullets) weapon. Semi requires one trigger fire but several bullets can come out. Again I'm not an expert and this is second hand info.
DeleteOoh, Seaward, yes!!
ReplyDeleteThese are freaking awesome and will disappear at the office Christmas party.
Cranberry Cream Cheese Bites
1 c flour
3/4 c oats
1/3 c firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 sticks butter, softened
2 c cranberry sauce (I used homemade - if you use canned, get regular and not jellied)
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1 14oz can condensed milk
1/2 c lemon juice
1 T brown sugar
2 T cornstarch
Preheat oven to 350. Generously butter a baking dish (I used a brownie pan).
In large bowl, combine oats, flour, 3/4 c brown sugar, and butter. Mix until crumbly. Remove 1 c of mixture and set aside. Press remainder firmly into bottom of greased pan. Bake for 15 min, then remove and cool for 10 minutes.
In small bowl, combine 1 T brown sugar and 2 T cornstarch. Stir in cranberry sauce and stir to coat completely.
In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffly. Gradually beat in condensed milk until smooth, then slow stir in lemon juice.
Spread cream cheese layer evenly on cooled crust; spoon cranberry mixture on top of cream cheese layer, then top with remaining 1 c mixture.
Bake 25 minutes or until golden. Cool and cut into bars or bites. Store covered in the fridge.
the only ones who win are the companies selling them lining their pockets using the basic fear of Americans.
ReplyDeleteHow about instead of talking about the horror, we do this instead:
ReplyDeleteThis was a post from the President of Fawn Hollow School PTO.....please read and spread the word:
"We have reached out to our PTA counterparts in Newtown to offer whatever help we can give. They have asked us to spread the word about a snowflake drive they are having through the CT PTSA. The snowflakes eventually will be used to decorate Chalk Hill. While we work on coordinating a collection effort for Fawn Hollow, we wanted to share the information on their behalf if anyone would like to pass it along to out of town friends. The information they have sent us is below. Thank you for all the amazing offers to help our Newtown neighbors and friends!"
Snowflakes for Sandy Hook
Please help the students of Sandy Hook have a winter wonderland at their new school! Get Creative!! No two snowflakes are alike. Make and send snowflakes to Connecticut PTSA, 60 Connolly Parkway, Building 12, Suite 103, Hamden, CT 06514, by January 12, 2013."
(By the way, this is a very personal issue for me. My cousin's kids went to this school, her son actually knew Adam Lanza and they're heartbroken, as it was obvious back in 5th grade that he had serious problems.)
@Stew - I'm on it! We have our monthly PTO meeting tomorrow, and I'm going to announce this! We have almost 1200 students - we can crank out a pile of snowflake love! Thanks so much for sharing!
DeleteStew, sent to my local PTA group via my SIL who is very, ahem, bossy. Hope you will get a lot of snowflakes from Florida.
Delete@stewmcg, a lot of what has been reported is still unconfirmed, but just wanted to say if he did have Aspergers, the kids have a lot of trouble with social interaction and can seem really strange to someone unaware of the condition. Children with Aspergers as a whole are not violent.
DeleteJust wanted to point out your cousins kids observations could come from someone just being different. I really hope people don't shy away from people with Aspergers because of this tragedy.
Ooh, Xmas movies. I have yet to watch any, but going to watch 'A Christmas Story' and the original 'Grinch Who Stole Christmas'...those are my 2 absolute faves. And, of course the Jimmy Stewart one...title has slipped my mind.
ReplyDeleteCathy just covered everyone's views in one posting. Thank you Cathy.
ReplyDeleteI'm also with her on the enjoying of my morning coffee.
@DBZee. LOL!!! Thank you for the recipe. I'm actually going to make them for my Christmas Eve party.
ReplyDeleteAgree with regular posters above. I haven't posted regularly, but read every day. Google accnt seems easier to use. Just love everyone here and wish y'all a happy and safe holiday season.
ReplyDeleteThis is a dumb post. There are no assault rifles being sold. These are assault "type" rifles. This is an error by lazy journalists. These rifles look similar to them in style but are not at all the same gun. They fire the same way as a pistol, in other words you have to pull the trigger each time you want to fire. A real assault rifle is AUTOMOMATIC, meaning you depress the trigger and hold it and it keeps firing, like a machine gun. They are not the same thing. How can we have an intelligent discussion on anything when we can't even get the basics right?
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you, Javamomma!
ReplyDeleteI second enjoying your morning coffee.
ReplyDeleteSeaward : Lazy person's chocolate croissants: Crescent Rolls. Melt chocolate chips. Fill those triangles with melted chocolate, throw some slivered almonds over the chocolate if you want. Roll them up, brush with a yolk, 375, 11-13 min. Then....eat them all. Great idea:)
ReplyDeleteAgent..those sound yummylicious and I have all the makings: time for brunch soon!
ReplyDeleteThis is the crappiest gossip I've read all day. When Lindsey buys one, let us know. (No, really, let us know!)
ReplyDeleteLove the recipe idea! This one isn't fancy, but as a single gal with a sweet tooth living on her own, it BLEW MY MIND when I came across it on Pinterest:
ReplyDelete3-2-1 Cake Mix
Combine 1 box of Angel food cake mix with 1 box of ANY other cake mix. Any time you want a single serve dessert, combine 3 tablespoons of mix with 2 tablespoons of water in a mug and microwave for 1 minute.
@cathy that 3-2-1 cake is such a cool idea! I bought fun shaped silicone ice cube trays today for a present. On the tag it said you can bake bite sized cakes cookies brownies...so I'm going to do ur 3-2-1 idea in them :)
DeleteButterscotch Cookies
ReplyDeleteTake the Nestle's Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe and substitute butterscotch chips for chocolate chips AND shortening for butter.
I make these every year and people LOVE them. I don't even get it. An old co-worker actually believed me for a minute when I told her the secret ingredient was cocaine.
The secret is the shortening. Also, I don't use an electric mixer (one time I did and they got too mixed and didn't taste right).
Lord, people are so stupid...
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you too reesespeace! Am so excited I can hardly stand it. Hubs and I are going to our first real New Year's Eve party since having our daughter six years ago--excited for that too.
ReplyDeleteCalling Robin time for your brownie recipe..

ASSAULT RIFLES FOR EVERYBODY!!!
ReplyDeleteTricky to wrap, there's probably a fortune to be made in custom rifle giftboxes.
Hunter first laugh of the day:)
Delete@Reeses I still have so many to get through:
ReplyDeleteCharlie Brown Christmas
Christmas in Connecticut
Christmas Story
Diva's Christmas Carol
The Holiday
Home Alone
Love Actually
The Man Who Came to Dinner
Oh, and the Mr Bean and Keeping Up Appearances Christmas episodes. I might even be forgetting one or two. Going to be a busy week!!
@Stew. I posted that info on my FB wall. Such a wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteYummm all these sound so good!
ReplyDeleteHere's my favorite mac & cheese:
-1 1/4C dry elbow macaroni
-12oz shredded cheese, whatever kind you like
-1 (12oz) can evaporated milk
-2 eggs, well beaten
-1/2C butter, melted
Preheat oven to 350. (I put the stick of butter in a 13x9 dish & melt it as the oven preheats.)
Cook & drain the macaroni, place into baking dish. Add evaporated milk (& butter if it's not in there yet).
Mix in the eggs.
Add the cheese, mix well.
Bake 30-40 minutes, till the top is bubbly.
seaward, that sounds delicious!!! Maybe I should make some mac & cheese tonight!

ReplyDeleteHere is something super easy I get asked to bring all the time--
ReplyDeleteCaramel pie
Buy or make one graham cracker crust.
Boil two large cans of sweetened condensed milk in cans for four hours. Make sure water is 3/4 way up cans or they may blow.
Pour into pie crust and top with whipped cream. Serve with sliced Granny Smith apples.
No one ever believes how simple--
Have taken to many pot lucks and always a hit.
Eagle Brand condensed is the best for this wonderful pie. You can do this in a crock: http://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/2009/11/christmas-cheats-caramel-pie.html
DeleteThanks Frufra & ReesesPeace. I figured it's the least we can all do, to make these kids (and adults) really feel the love.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, Sandy Hook really has a Bedford Falls from "It's a Wonderful Life" feel. Everyone knows everyone.
Since my kids are already on winter break (seriously Mentor Public Schools, a 2 1/2 week vacation?!?), we're doing this on our own and with our church's Sunday School classes.
Oh god...mac'n cheese sounds sooooo good and that caramel pie. omg!
ReplyDeleteMy gosh, so many comments already!!
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say that maybe people arent just buying these because of cracking down on gun laws but because A LOT of people, crazies but still people, think the world is ending Friday.
Java, I think I'm making your caramel apple pie this weekend. That sounds AMAZING!
ReplyDelete@Caitlin - we're not commenting on the guns, just sharing recipes & holiday movies!
ReplyDeleteI watched my hands-down, all-time favorite movie last week when I was home sick: It's a Wonderful Life.
"You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll wrap a lasso around it."
Next up:
Grinch (animated original)
Charlie Brown
Elf <3 Buddy!
Well-done, Cathy. That covers it! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think tonight shall be the viewing of "BlackAdder's Christmas Carol" and LOVE ACTUALLY.
How easy is that 3-2-1 cake?! I gotta find that and pin it so I don't forget.
Java, I'm going to the store as soon as I quit interneting. I'm going to get the condensed milk. Just to make double-sure: boil for four hours? Replenishing the water as needed, I'm assuming.
ReplyDeleteNice work Cathy on diverting the topic. See I was right...I really love the peeps on this board these days ;>. Keep the recipes coming!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI have another hour to go before lunch and I'm starving - the recipes sound wonderful! I'm going to try the caramel pie once I can figure out when I'll be home to supervise a 4 hour boil.
ReplyDeleteI need a hot dip recipe if anyone has one.
@mikey - the phrase "supervise a four hour boil" has me giggling! Not sure why, really, just cracks me up :-) - thanks! Sounds like a job where you need protective eyewear and a clipboard or something - hee hee.
Delete@frufra @mikey I'm cracking up too!!!
DeleteI have one of those little crock pots and a dip recipe for that would be great.
ReplyDeleteMikey, Ingredients:
Delete1 large package (16 to 20 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
2 (8 ounces) packages cream cheese, cut in cubes
3/4 cup chopped green onions
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon paprika
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 can (8 ounces) water chestnuts, drained, chopped
assorted crackers, chips, or vegetable dippers
Preparation:
In slow cooker, combine spinach and cream cheese. Add green onions, garlic powder, pepper, and paprika. Cover and cook for 2 hours, stirring once or twice, until very hot. Reserve 1/4 cup of shredded cheese for topping. Stir in the remaininng cheese and chopped water chestnuts. Sprinkle reserved cheese over top. Serve with chips, crackers, or vegetables for dipping.
@Agent - oh, snap! Adding these ingredients to my shopping list - my kiddos will luv this! Thanks for the recipe.
DeleteMy favorite Christmas movie is Gremlins, it was on last weekend. I always forget Feldman is in that movie, he was such an adorable child. Personally, I like Gremlins 2 better.
ReplyDeleteI did watch Love Actually and The Nightmare Before Christmas, my other favorites. And soon I'll watch Scrooged!
Here is proof that ANYONE can make bread LOL. So easy to do and so great with butter or butter and strawberry jelly. Seriously you just mix everything in a bowl and if you use rapid rise yeast you only have to let it rise once.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/02/moms-english-muffin-bread.html
It's worth while to look over the rest of this site to. Very easy recipes and DIY, crafts etc.
Here's my contribution to the recipe swap. My fave for cold winter evenings!
ReplyDeleteSpicy Garlic Toss for Noodles (from "How It All Vegan" by Tanya Barnard & Sarah Kramer)
4-6 cloves garlic, minced or crushed
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup water
2 tsp Bragg's Liquid Aminos OR Soy Sauce
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp dried thyme
1/4 tsp dried pepper
1/4 tsp salt
dash of cayenne pepper
In a small saucepan, saute garlic in 1 tablespoon of oil on medium-low heat until garlic is translucent. Be careful not to burn. Add the water, remaining oil, Braggs (or soy sauce), paprika, basil, thyme, pepper, salt, and cayenne and bring to a boil. Simmer for 8-15 minutes. Toss with soba or buckwheat noodles. Serve the noodles with steamed veggies and tofu or eat noodles on their own, right out of the pot, for that bachelor look. Makes 2-4 servings.
I love u @vip! I just bought my first bottle of Braggs and it's so good! It didn't occur to me yet to use it in a recipe and yours sounds so good! Thanks and now I'll check out the book too :)
Delete@Seaward - Thanks for the macaroni and cheese recipe! Can't make Mac n' cheese to save my life. It always turns out grainy. I never thought of adding eggs. Trying it this week!
ReplyDeletethis is just fucking amazing
ReplyDeletesmh
@Agent - I love the lazy persons chocolate croissant recipe you posted, but couldn't it be modified to be the *lazier* person's recipe, without melting the chocolate chips beforehand? Since it all goes in the oven anyway?
ReplyDeleteCathy, absolutely. I was being, ahem, fancy:) I have used Hershey's kisses unmelted and Reeses cups and they come out great. Thank you for your comment at the top of the thread!
DeleteI always watch the south park Xmas special, Mr. hankey's singalong or something. merry fuckin Xmas!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are awesome :D Here's my recipe contribution, Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup, so good and super easy.

2 cups water
1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt

To serve, sprinkle tortilla strips over soup. Add shredded mozzarella.
And i bet not one if these people stops to ask themselves, " why am i getting this?" I just dont get it but to each his iown.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are funny! :)
ReplyDeleteHey Frufra and Katsm0711 - It's the simplest recipe with the longest prep time ever! There's a lot of pressure on me to supervise a 4 hour boil - I can't leave the house! Do I set an alarm at 1/2 hour intervals so I can check the water level?
ReplyDelete@Agent - I'm making the dip for my house party Saturday - perfect! Many thanks!
Way to go, CDANers!! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!!
ReplyDeleteWe make cioppino on Xmas eve every year. Delicious!!!!
I saw the 71 comments and thought "well here we go. At least I will have plenty of gooby comments to read".
ReplyDeleteInstead I find holiday recipes. I love you guys. Merry Christmas to all!!
Way to go Cathy! My contribution, that I'm making right now btw:
ReplyDeleteHot Cocoa Cupcakes
1 1/8 cup all purpose flour
2 hot cocoa packets (this measures out to approx 1/2 cup)
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter melted
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a bowl, whisk egg and sugar until smooth. Add in your buttermilk, butter and vanilla and mix until smooth. Sift your dry ingredients together and add to the wet mixture, mixing until well combined. Line a muffin tin with liners and scoop batter into each cup. Bake for 16-20 minutes.
I made them with marshmallow buttercream and they're too sweet, so this time I'm trying fresh whipped cream. But they really do taste like hot cocoa, as apposed to a chocolate cupcake!
I know I said I wasn't going to come back to this, but I went out for awhile and when I came back I saw 76 comments and thought "No, these guys can't be that eager to go through the gun arguments again!" Boy was I wrong!!! Congrats to those who hijacked the thread!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm definitely trying the lazy choc. croissant recipe!
These recipes sound amazing. I'm definitely going to try a few.
ReplyDeleteAnd re:the guns-Obviously these people are just preparing for the coming apocalypse.
You ladies on phantastic! Thank you for changing the topic into something light and fun. The snowflake idea sounds really wonderful. Have a great day everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteNot talking about something doesn't usually help, but whatever... I'm not trying to offend any of you or go against your thread but some of us do have to talk about it.
ReplyDeletePeople are probably buying the assault rifles because they think that gun control laws are going to come down? Why someone would need an automatic weapon, other than soldiers and police, I don't know...
By the way, I do have guns in my home properly stored. I'm repeating myself, but not everybody reads every thread. I wish people who have guns at home would re-examine their cabinets to make sure they are secure enough. If you have a troubled family member, maybe remove them from the home permanently or until the family member is stable.
If anyone is interested, I found an interesting set of charts. They are from The National Post site in Canada. That is actually a conservative-type paper, so they would be for less govt regulation if anything.
The first charts are a breakdown of 2015 murders of Infants, Children and Teens to Age 18 (19th year). The number one cause at 62.8 percent is firearms.
The second chart shows the relationship between Households with guns and Child Death caused by Firearms from 1981 thru 2010.
Here is the link
http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/fo1217_childmurder600.jpg?w=600&h=1165
If it doesn't work if you search:
A Grim Catalogue of Child Murder
it should get you to it.
Again, my apologies, am not trying to offend anyone or offend the lunch-tables.
I love my CDANers for turning what was supposed to be a hot-button thread into sharing Christmas recipes. *sniff* I'm proud of you guys.
ReplyDeleteMy youngest son's school was closed today--the whole district was--due to "credible reports of a threat at the high school", where he's a senior. Today was to be the last day before the break, and he still had 2 finals to take.
ReplyDeleteSorry to be Debbie Downer. . .
Frufra, are you gettin' ready for the Christmas blizzard???
@Momster - you know it! Just put up all my groceries and am now ready to hunker down! We'll see what happens!
DeleteThat sucks about the threat in your district - hope all is well.
American has WAY too many paranoid, batshit crazy citizens. Speaking of which, if everyone were to act like a good citizen and get involved in their Democratic Republic, they would be a part of this government they so fear.
ReplyDeleteA gun in the house increases the probability of suicide by 50%. Most people don't use their guns for protection, they use them to shoot people they are mad at, or themselves. Successful use of a gun (other than by law enforcement) for one's own protection very rarely happens.
I wish I could blame my errors on autocorrect. :(
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could read the thread, we had something positive going on here, for a change.
ReplyDeleteI was a little wary of opening the commenst on this one, but I see there was no need. Happy Holidays to everyone! Even those who didn't quite get it...*L*
ReplyDeleteI have an awesome recipe for a broccoli and cheese type quiche dish. It is a HUGE smash at pot luck parties and BBQ's. It's fattening, but delicious.
ReplyDelete1 lb of cottage cheese
3 eggs
1 tbsp of flour
4 tbsp of butter (melted)
1 package of frozen chopped broccoli (or spinach or asparagus)
1 package of the whole swiss cheese slices (ones that you would use in a sandwich) and cut it up into course pieces with your fingers. I can't remember off the top of my head how many ounces or lbs it is...but it's quite a bit...yum.
Mix it all together and put into a casserole dish. Cook at 350 for 45 min to 1 hour and then remove. Let it sit so it can cool and fully harden.
YUUUMMMY....everyone asks for this recipe. I've never told a soul. You are all my first. Shhhhhh
crila, just amended my grocery list to include this. New comfort food, gotta love it:)
DeleteSorry folks, I got past peer pressure issues a long time ago - I had to.
ReplyDeleteA person shouldn't have to get shit on for posting on-topic....
You're not going to get shit on, but don't get cranky if you get largely ignored either.
ReplyDeleteAnd VIP- I'm all over that recipe! Yum!
@ VIPBlonde - Have you tried your recipe with rice noodles? I freakin' love them and usually have a few packages in the house.
ReplyDeleteEasy Vegan Vegetable Curry
ReplyDelete2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoons cayenne pepper
4 teaspoons curry powder
2-3 teaspoons garam masala
1 (1 inch) piece fresh ginger root, peeled and grated or minced (Freeze for easier grating)
2 teaspoons salt
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1/2 can (15 ounce) garbanzo (chickpeas) beans, rinsed and drained
1 package frozen steam-in-bag broccoli, cauliflower, carrot mix
1/2 package frozen green peas
1 (14 ounce) can coconut milk
Directions
1. Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until just tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two.
2. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Season with cumin, cayenne pepper, curry powder, garam masala, ginger, and salt; cook for 2 minutes more. Microwave steam-in-bag broccoli, cauliflower, carrot mix as per instructions. Add the tomatoes, garbanzo beans, potatoes, 1/2 bag frozen peas and bag of steamed veggies when they are done. Pour in the coconut milk, and bring to a simmer. Simmer 10 minutes before serving.
Obviously I cheat by using frozen veggies but the flavor is not compromised, promise. You can, of course, use fresh, but you will have to cook longer.
You might want to have an extra can of coconut milk on hand just in case the curry seems a bit dry. Also, a package of naan bread would be good!
Adjust cayenne to your palate, although 1 tsp for a pot of food this large is not terribly hot, however if you are heat sensitive you might want to start out with half a teaspoon.
When purchasing ginger, break off just what you need. A friend of mine thought she had to buy those huge branches. No! Just break off what you will need for your recipe. I usually buy a piece about the size of a finger at a time and wrap what I don't use and put it in the freezer.
Lastly, I buy most of my spices at the Spanish markets. The prices are way lower than supermarkets!
Bon appetit!
In a perfect world there would be a run on Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun Rifles around this time of year. :(
ReplyDelete@Tuxedo Cat good for posting your view. I just want to thank you because even though we may not agree on all points UGH I hate it when people go all aggressive on commenters who dont share their own points of views, if anything it is MORE interesting to read the contrary point of view (IMO)
ReplyDelete@Ingrid Superstar, but we'd all shoot our eye out! lol (Love that movie! One of the years I'll get around to seeing the "A Christmas Story" house/museum which is here in Cleveland.)
ReplyDeleteJust want to throw in my favorite Christmas recipe - I give it as presents to family, neighbor, work, etc.
ReplyDeleteENGLISH TOFFEE
1 pound butter (NOT margarine, margarine will NOT work!)
2 cups sugar
2 cups slivered almonds
3 7 or 8 ounce Hershey bars.
Chop 1 1/2 Hershey bars up into small pieces.
Melt butter in large, heavy saucepan. Add sugar and almonds. Bring to a boil, stirring almost constantly, until candy thermometer reaches 300 degrees. (Takes about 10 minutes). Mixture will be a golden color. Pour mixture into buttered 13 X 10 (or whatever is about that size) jelly roll pan - use spoon to spread out. Sprinkle Hershey bar pieces over, let melt 2-3 minutes, and spread over candy mixture. Chill.
Chop up other 1 1/2 Hershey bars. Flip candy over - will be hard and usually in one piece. Sprinkle cut up Hershey bars over candy and put under broiler for a few minutes. I usually put broiler on around 400 degrees and do it 2-3 minutes, until chocolate is softened. Spread chocolate over candy with knife and chill.
Break up candy into pieces. Makes around 3 1/2 pounds.
Sometimes I use chocolate chips instead of Hershey bars. Keeps well in the fridge.
LOL - as the world and our own nation wonder why no one will bring up gun control issues or make new laws, the subject gets posted here and everyone is like "eww - let's post recipes!"
ReplyDeleteNot a surprise this shit keeps happening.
@Jessica it's not that people say "eww" I don't want to talk about it, it's that they come to a mind numbing celebrity gossip site to get their mind off of these subjects for a second but than see it pop there as well and that's when the "eww" is appropriate. This is an example of why Dlisted will always be my number one favorite gossip site, no unnecessary argument starting subjects, just pure unnecessary celebrity snark. But I do love the comment section here more than anywhere else. All these unique personalities bring me back day after day, especially lately, when I find CDAN/enty itself becoming less and less entertaining.
DeleteRemember in the movie "Hot Shots" how there were brownie and cake recipes listed throughout the end credits?
ReplyDeleteThis thread just reminded me of that.
Fabulous thread. My Christmas movie is Bad Santa. Haven't watched it yet. We are hosting Christmas this year, can't wait.
ReplyDelete@Feraltart Thanks for the reminder!!! That's one that I forgot from my list!
ReplyDelete@Beta
ReplyDeleteThanks Beta, same here.
There are some good recipes on here. I am very behind in my baking. I'm tired of using the same old ones.
I might try making some candy this year.
@ Tuxedo - Buckeyes (homemade Reese peanut butter cups) are sometimes a nice change from the usual fudge and cookies. I'll dig up the recipe if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteLove Actually is my annual gift wrapping movie accompanied by chocolate coated scorched almonds. Mmmmm!
ReplyDeleteAnd some tips for delicious chocolate chip cookies - brown the butter, wrap the cookie around a teaspoon portion of Nutella. Also, I used Lindt Sea Salt chocolate blocks chopped up. You're welcome!
Jessica - Gun laws and gun rights are being debated on thousands of web sites right now. It's not hard to find any of them if you wish to engage in that particular conversation. What we say here on this little tiny area of the internet is not going to make a lot of difference. Let everybody enjoy themselves here in these few days before the holidays.

ReplyDeleteI would appreciate it if you have the time!
I freaking just walked into Panara Bread and the first sound I hear is from a woman "and these RIGHT wing conservatives... " she could only be talking about guns so I ran
ReplyDeleteGlad this group didn't fall for this loaded topic. The DM has been so manipulative with their coverage of the tragedy, too. They did it with the nurse in the UK, too. While it's fun to gossip and speculate on celebrity rumors, it is damaging to do so with real, proven events, particularly where speculation and innuendo add more fuel to an already volatile and painful situation. Glad to read about recipes or gossip.
ReplyDelete@ Tuxedo Cat (and any other Chocolate Peanut Butter lover)
ReplyDeleteBUCKEYES
I buy a few packages of those mini cupcake paper cups but that's optional (good idea if you're giving them away as gifts).
2 cups smooth peanut butter
1 cup softened butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners sugar, sifted
4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon vegetable oil.
Directions
1. In a large bowl, mix together the peanut butter, butter, vanilla and confectioners' sugar. The dough will look dry. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. It's sticky work, so you can dust your hands periodically with powdered sugar.
2. Press a toothpick into the top of each ball (to be used later as the handle for dipping) and chill in freezer until firm, about 60 minutes.
3. Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler or in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir frequently until smooth. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil.
4. Dip frozen peanut butter balls in chocolate holding onto the toothpick. Leave a small portion of peanut butter showing at the top to make them look like Buckeyes. Put back on the cookie sheet (or into little cupcake cups) and refrigerate until serving.
Don't eat too many as you're making them or you WILL get sick, lol!
@Mango
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for taking the time. I can get the mini baking cups at bulk barn. It's going to be fun making something a bit different than I usually make.
Thanks for the recipes everyone! I'm all over the Caramel Pie.

ReplyDeleteToo true, Chilie!! I'm debating whether to write the 3-2-1 recipe down...or if I'll regret it 5 pounds from now!
ReplyDeleteI would usually be up for debating the gun situation in this country but to be honest I'm tired of being mad and crying everyday watching the news. I need a break so thanks for all the recipes, I will be making a few of them :)

And there are no other recipe discussion sites? LOL
The obvious "let's not talk about this and change it to something else" just echoes the problem so well.
Sad.
(Apologies if this shows up several times, internet is acting weird.)
ReplyDeleteNobody should be made to feel bad if they post on this thread on-topic. This is Enty's website, and as such can post whatever he likes to his bacon-loving heart's content.
That said, I saved the Buckeye recipe. One question: Is it legal to make them if you're not in Ohio? LOL, and om nom nom nom!
