Gangnam Style Most Watched YouTube Video Ever

Move over Justin Bieber, you have been surpassed. Baby, which had been the all time leader on YouTube with 803 million views since its debut back in February 2010, has been bested by Gangnam Style which now has 805 million views in just four months since its debut. Definitely going to pass a billion views before the end of the year. Apparently Bieber fans have been screaming on chat boards and trying to get Baby back on top, but there are just not enough people who care about Bieber any longer to make it happen. He has outlived his shelf life. Not saying that Gangnam Style has not outlived its shelf life too. I think this will probably be the ultimate one hit wonder, but I do have to ask if Macarena had come along now, would it have the most YouTube views ever. It seemed like it was a bigger one hit wonder.

  3. @smash You're right, it's just one item in a very, very long line of idiotic crazes. But you gotta admit, it's REALLY dumb!

  4. Little miss- oh it's dumb and silly. But I feel like all the other are worse. They try to be so cool and serious. Atleast psy is just having fun.

  5. I love this song, but I've loved most of Psy's music. I am still amazed by his success in America with this song. He has been around forever and is a living legend in Korea, then he went viral. Good for him and me, I love seeing Justin Bieber and kpop fans going nuts over this. They are flipping out.

  6. Plus, he has a second video of that song where he duets the song with Hyuna, a hot female singer from a Korean girl band, that has done 160 million views.

  9. I think it's hilarious, he sends up video tropes, and the US military send ups are brilliant. PSY is really funny in interviews, and this is his 6th album. As Unknown said, he's got a great career now he's world wide famous. I think he'll have more hits if not this big, but he's worked hard for years rather than manufactured one hit types.

  11. Think it's great, actually. The U.S. Naval Academy version is the bomb! Glad the "Beliebers" are up in arms. THAT makes my day.

  14. Reason= "spreading smiles and pure fun around the world in record time", About.com.

As Smash said, it s silly but it s just FUN, spontaneous and some of the spoofs are awesome.

And I feel schadenfreude thinking of all these big music moguls wondering how that fat Korean did while they are polluting our ears with their carefully "market-researched" crap and heavy promotion.

  16. You can't make this stuff up. I would of never imagined the song getting as big as it is today.

  17. I love Psy and I have wondered the same thing about the Macarena..it was everywhere for a while back in the day.

I don't think Psy will be getting an Oprah interview tho and Justin will be on tonight.

  18. I actually love this song, bc it is pure silly fun. I laugh everytime I see it! So I have a toddler's sense of humor? So what! Good for Psy for putting something out there that brings collective joy to the masses. Damn, we really need that right now!

    :)

I love "Gangnam Style", I probably pull up that video at least a couple times a day, just because it's catchy, fun and makes me smile. Psy isn't a "one-hit wonder" as some of you have described him, he's a superstar in Korea and has some six or so albums out. He seems like a nice guy too.

On the other hand, I had to give up my bragging rights that I have never actually listened to Justin Bieber when a commercial sung by him played before another video I was watching. Good God, is that really how he sounds? Does the coming generation have no musical taste at all?

  21. Enty your comment about the "Macarena" was interesting. It does show that YouTube records really don't mean anything since YouTube has been around for such a short period of time. There are plenty of songs that would have been bigger than Bieber's silly vid or Gangnam Style in the past if the Internet had existed. For example I was a bit too young to really be into the New Kids On The Block but some of my older sister's friends were absolutely crazy over them. If YouTube had been around back then they would have been hitting the "Like" button until their fingers bled for stuff like "Step by Step" and "Hangin' Tough".

Nothing against Psy though, I think this song is rather dumb but it's kinda fun too.

  22. I think the Gangnam is fun, and is very catchy. It makes people smile.

I guess the hipster crowd probably hates Gangnam and Justin Bieber. Every generation has them, though. Teen idols and dance crazes...

  23. I knew about Psy before he became a viral hit here in the US.

I love him and my kpop idols. :D

  24. The Atlantic had a really interesting article on what the song's actually about. Yes, it's silly, but it's also really interesting and subversive, and a satirical critique of modern Korean culture.

  25. Something about Psy just seems fun and likeable, so I'm happy for him. Also, nice for a foreign singer to get some fame in the US, no matter how fleeting.

And yes, I'll admit it, the song is catchy. As is the little horsey riding thing he does, hee hee
