I will let the reader tell the story.
I wanted to tell you a nice celeb story about what happened to me last night while I was trick or treating with my kids and some friends of theirs.
One of the kids in the group, a five year old boy, was dressed up as Harry Potter, complete with matted hair, glasses, wand, etc. We were walking on East 78th Street which is a popular Halloween spot for NYC kids since all the town houses and apartments on the blocks between Park and 3rd Avenue go all out decorating for the holiday and load them up with candy.
Anyway amid the madness, the boy was walking along the street when a young woman came up to him and said, "Excuse me, are you Harry Potter?" After he mumbled out a yes, she said, "That's great, because I'm Hermonie Granger and we're best of friends" and she gave him a big hug.
Of course the boy was too young to realize that it was indeed Emma Watson, who couldn't have been nicer.

ReplyDeleteAwwww...I love her. I remember reading that her parents wouldn't let her touch her Harry Potter money until she was 18, and they set up a meeting with her and financial advisors so that she could learn how to manage it. So much better than the parents like White Oprah.

ReplyDeleteSo seeing as how this is a sweet story for the day, and I'm actually up early enough to catch the rest of you, I feel the need to write this website and its commenters a love note.
ReplyDeleteI don't tend to comment much, and I always manage to visit late enough that I miss all the action, but I come here every day. I've been reading religiously for almost a year, and I have to tell you all what a remarkable group we have here. I've spent a lot of time at other sites, and the commenters tear down and insult each other with such vitriol. Here, commenters disagree and debate respectfully. Instead of rudeness, stupidity, and viciousness, you support, tease, and love each other. The concern and kindness on the Hurricane Sandy post is just the most recent example. People sincerely offered to open their homes to others who might be in danger, whom they have most likely never met! Would you see something like that on Yahoo, Jezebel, or Youtube? It's incredible!
A bit of my own story so you can understand where I'm coming from. I injured my back almost two years ago, and it has prevented me from working and being able to do much outside the house, so I spend a lot of time online. My husband is amazing and supportive, but he works 14 hours a day, so I tend to feel rather isolated. It's helped me immensely to find such a reliable, wonderful group of people who really do feel like friends. You have all built such a great community here, and the dynamic is such that trolls &c. don't tend to stick around long, and kind, supportive people become regulars. I love that you can share some of your worst stories and darkest pain, muse on philosophy, politics, religion, ethics, and then snark on what actors wear to award shows all in the same place. You laugh, cry, tease, snark, and essentially enjoy each other's company. It's really remarkable and unique, and I feel really appreciative that you let me join your wonderful community. And I have to give Enty props for his hilarious, thought-provoking writing and what he has done to encourage this outstanding place. I've just really felt compelled the past couple of days to tell you all what you've grown to mean to me. Thanks for giving me a great place to hang out with you all.
TL;DR, basically you guys are awesome.

ReplyDeleteIf you don't have the time to read the books you can always do the audiobooks. My husband loves the books and has reread and listened to them over 20 times each book (it's a problem). Get the audio books with Jim Dale, he's won awards for his work and he does all the voices differently. It's awesome. JK Rowling is the CS Lewis of our time.

The genuine feel of family (where you snark all day long but would cut a bitch if anyone was in trouble) is lovely when most of my family is so far away. I particularly love that you either point blank ignore trolls or beat them at their own game (case in point armpit gate ;p).

@Sarah It is a pseudonym, and Atlas Shrugged was the inspiration. It's one of my two favorite books and I've read it 12 times. (I am not, however, the reader in the dating profile post.) I consider myself an Objectivist, and Husband and I have already agreed that if we have a daughter, we'll name her Dagny. The character is a personal hero of ours, plus it's such a lovely name--unique without being too crazy.
@christina, sorry I love the audio books but no-one can beat Stephen Fry in the UK version, wonderful voice for the HP books... actually re-listening to Deathly Hallows at the moment!
ReplyDeleteAs for the kids from HP, I heard a lot about the more established HP actors offering them mentoring, assistance over the years, so I really think that it took a company of actors to raise level headed child actors!

ReplyDelete@Dagny - you rock! On Harry Potter - I read the books to my son when he was little, doing all the accents (which I may add, I'm pretty good at!) So naturally when I read this to my husband, I used Hermione's accent. Easy, I grew up in England!
