It has been awhile, so I wanted to let everyone post what they wanted today. Have something to plug? A favorite website or product? A garage sale? Band? Project? Recipe? Have at it.
I want to plug a musical artist today. Her name is Ani Difranco and she is an amazing singer, songwriter and guitarist. She owns her own record label (Righteous Babe) and its based in Buffalo NY. I saw her live and she blew me away. Her live albums are way better than studio but check her out! She is wonderful and quirky. "Gravel" is a top notch song!
OMG! Ani is mah favorite! I met my ex wife on an Ani discussion board (on AOL even) way back when meeting people on the interwebs was crazy talk. Ended up moving halfway across the country to be with her which led to a lot of good years and the best kid ever before it ended. My favorite Ani lyric:

A couple months ago I posted on one of these about my friend who was hit by a car and the driver fled, and we had a benefit for him. The driver was finally caught a couple days ago. I'm so happy for him!

Ok, I've got a request - I'm looking for a fajita marinade recipe that works for either chicken or beef. I've tried a few recipes I've found but nothing seems quite right. Anyone have a good recipe? Thanks in advance!
Susan, I don't have an exact recipe but I'll try to gestimate...
For about 1lb of meat
Lightly pound the meat with a tenderizing mallet (don't slice)
Slice one large yellow or white onion
In a ziploc (the following measurements are approximate, you may need to adjust slightly)
1/3 cup olive oil (veg oil is fine) 1 1/2 tablespoons worchestershire 1/2-1 teaspoon liquid smoke 1 tablespoon chili powder 2 tablespoons cumin powder Dash of soy sauce 2 tablespoons wine, beer, sake, brandy...whatever you have on hand Salt to taste
Seal bag and shake to mix well. Add meat and onions and let marinate at least an hour, preferably overnight. (I don't like bell peppers, but if you do, increase the marinade a bit and add them with the meat and onions)
I know this is Extrmely simple but on week nights when I don't feel like cooking a dinner that will take hours I get whatever meat I have and cook it with some Italian dressing. If you have chicken cut it into pieces, put a little non stick spray on a pan, put the chicken in the pan, and pour some Italian dressing on it. If you have beef you can do the same as the chicken OR if it is a roast like bottom round or London broil just put the roast in a pan, cover it with Italian dressing on both sides, add extra is you want more gravy, and cook for 45 on 350. I swear, it's so simple and people love it! From My niece and nephews to my grandmother, it's a quick easy, yummy, secrect!
@Caitlin...I have a friend who does that. I do something that is very similar, pour olive oil over meat and then a packet of hidden valley ranch dressing mix kcombine well) . Simple and yummy. (or dip in olive oil and dredge in h.v. ranch dressing mix combined with parmesian cheese and bread crumbs.)
My son is autistic. Next time you see a mother struggling with a child having a tantrum in a store or parking lot, don't just shake you head, look disapproving and walk by. You don't know what that mother might be dealing with.
With you Michel - my son isn't autistic - other problems he's growing out of, but as a littlie he presented as autistic. Went through all the tests and it wasn't, but he behaved that way. The number of people that disparaged visually or verbally "you're unfit to parent" - "err, thanks random stranger, that's helpful, cheers." This one rough but absolutely standard day, a guy watched me wrestle my son into his car seat, and I thought the put-down would come, but instead he smiled over and gave me a thumbs up. Silly little thing, but damn it made me feel better. But yeah, Mr A. and I were often on the receiving end of random crap from strangers - you know what? You deplore me tackling him so he doesn't run on the road and get killed, why not give me a freaking hand!!
Alita- I swear my son is the same. He's going to be three in November. He goes from calm and patient, to screaming tyrant in 1 second. People think I can't handle being a parent, or i'm doing something wrong. Its really tough when you don't have an understanding support system. I feel a sadness too. For him. @Michel-thanks for putting that out there. Don't judge.
I feel for you Gtzisshe, it's tough. Only advice - get him tested asap. We went years trying to get one after it was clear there was a 'problem' - had started as delayed speech, increasing food pickiness, then behavioural issues. When D was your boy's age it was so tough. About half a year later his Dad quit working because we couldn't have D in care - he got 'asked to leave.' It was so bad. Family 'dos were a disaster - and we copped so much judgement everywhere. It took a long time, but we finally got a diagnosis and for us, that was a relief and a starting point - now we knew what we were tackling. Long road, lots of decisions, tough on all of us. But .. D's 10 now, back in mainstream school and - bless his latest report card - scraping into 'average.' Back when he was 5, we were told he was and would always be 'special needs.' He's still difficult as hell, some days truly suck, and we do a lot to keep him on a good path. But sometimes - just sometimes - life throws you a winning ball.

The second organization coordinates with the first. With "feet on the ground" and the only shelter in Afganistan, they are able to get the soldiers' companions to safety while funding is found to return the animals to their soldiers.

@NapAssasin - have you checked out Amazon? They help authors with self-publishing - I've gotten quite a few books that were self-published that way and really enjoyed some of them (truthfully, some of them are absolute crap). Go to Kindle Support - scroll down to Make Money with Amazon and there's something about Independently Publishing with Us. After that, I have no idea but I think it's free or minimal cost. I've seen some kid's books on the free lists that have lots of pictures that people buy for their Kindle Fire. (I don't usually buy children's books. I either read non-fiction, murder mysteries or apocalyptic stuff).
@Emma Baron - best wishes with your book!
And to all authors - get a proofreader - so many self published books are poorly edited (if edited at all) and it's always brought up in the reviews. People really hold that against an author.
@SusanB: Beat me to it as usual with the advice on self-publishing. I second your advice to NapAssasin on getting a copy editor to proof the book.
I always download the free sample first, and if I come across a single typo or grammatical error, that's it. I don't care if the book is 99 cents, I know it will give me a headache.

The spelling/grammar errors drive me insane. One I can forgive, but multiple ones just show a lack of care from the author, leading me to assume they're equally careless with the plot.
I've reviewed a few books on Amazon and even gotten a little thank you response from a few authors. A few other authors I've friended on Facebook which is kind of neat.

I agree that self-publishing (with a good proofreader) can be a great road to publication. My book is NOT self-published (it's released through a publishing house and went through a lengthy copy- and line-editing process) but ebook outlets like Amazon and BN make it very easy to do yourself.
Finish your books and publish them, NapAssassin, you'll never regret doing it.

I just want to say that I just started reading this blog not too long ago and I read the comments as well. You guys are such a nice group in a world of internet trolls and bitchiness. I feel like I know you guys a little just from your comments. Plus, y'all are hilarious! :) I would like to say I don't ever plug things, but I would like to ask for support in Breast Cancer research. My cousin was recently diagnosed and it came on very fast. She has a 44% chance of survival and I worry. I will admit that I was never one to support very many causes, but like many others it definitely takes an interest when it hits close to home. There was an article recently about a guy who made a good living hiring $10/hr college grads to write reviews on Amazon. Most of them hadn't even read the book. They got talking points and submitted a positive short review. He got paid by the authors.
Amazon eventually cottoned on and banned him and he claims he is out of the business.
Incredible but true. I take all Amazon ratings with several grains of salt right now.

I have worked at the same job for 19 years until today. My boss was doing something illegal and the doors have been closed. I didn't know about anything illegal the whole time I worked there. @Michel and @Alita - my son is "high functioning autistic". He's 21 now, and he's a great kid, but when he was little he had major behavioural problems, and his teens were even worse. People don't understand because most autistic kids look "normal". All I can say is that it eventually gets better and better as the kids learn to cope with social situations even if they don't totally understand them. Thanks you guys. My boss was selling insurance to people when he didn't have policies. He sent all of the $ overseas. Now hundreds of people who were hurt in on the job accidents will be responsible for the medical bills. So, Mr. king who was hurt on the job and is in a wheel chair with no legs will not be getting his long term disability check next month. It's heartbreaking.

(Genetic modified organism) involves the insertion or deletion of genes, a process known to be in corn, canola soy and other crops. cross pollination, as well as health risks are associated. it is fairly new and we are just guinea pigs to see how it affects the body (long and short term). seems to have devastating effects on children much more so, as their bodies are still developing....the products are not marked, and big business does not want it to pass, although if it does, it may single handedly drive gmos from the supermarkets-due to popular opinion.

Ok, I've got a request - I'm looking for a fajita marinade recipe that works for either chicken or beef. I've tried a few recipes I've found but nothing seems quite right. Anyone have a good recipe? Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeleteSusan, I don't have an exact recipe but I'll try to gestimate...
DeleteFor about 1lb of meat
Lightly pound the meat with a tenderizing mallet (don't slice)
Slice one large yellow or white onion
In a ziploc (the following measurements are approximate, you may need to adjust slightly)
1/3 cup olive oil (veg oil is fine)
1 1/2 tablespoons worchestershire
1/2-1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 tablespoons cumin powder
Dash of soy sauce
2 tablespoons wine, beer, sake, brandy...whatever you have on hand
Salt to taste
Seal bag and shake to mix well.
Add meat and onions and let marinate at least an hour, preferably overnight. (I don't like bell peppers, but if you do, increase the marinade a bit and add them with the meat and onions)
Here, cooking can take several forms. I usually either grill outside or broil directly under the coils at 500* (if you do this, leave the onions in round slices so they are easier to turn). You could also sauté the meat with the onions. All of these meathod are to your preferred doneness.
After cooking, let the meat rest for 5 minutes and then slice into strips.
I serve it with cilantro, pico de gallo and cheese.
Hope you like it.
I know this is Extrmely simple but on week nights when I don't feel like cooking a dinner that will take hours I get whatever meat I have and cook it with some Italian dressing.
DeleteIf you have chicken cut it into pieces, put a little non stick spray on a pan, put the chicken in the pan, and pour some Italian dressing on it.
If you have beef you can do the same as the chicken OR if it is a roast like bottom round or London broil just put the roast in a pan, cover it with Italian dressing on both sides, add extra is you want more gravy, and cook for 45 on 350.

@Caitlin...I have a friend who does that. I do something that is very similar, pour olive oil over meat and then a packet of hidden valley ranch dressing mix kcombine well) . Simple and yummy. (or dip in olive oil and dredge in h.v. ranch dressing mix combined with parmesian cheese and bread crumbs.)

DeleteWith you Michel - my son isn't autistic - other problems he's growing out of, but as a littlie he presented as autistic. Went through all the tests and it wasn't, but he behaved that way. The number of people that disparaged visually or verbally "you're unfit to parent" - "err, thanks random stranger, that's helpful, cheers." This one rough but absolutely standard day, a guy watched me wrestle my son into his car seat, and I thought the put-down would come, but instead he smiled over and gave me a thumbs up. Silly little thing, but damn it made me feel better. But yeah, Mr A. and I were often on the receiving end of random crap from strangers - you know what? You deplore me tackling him so he doesn't run on the road and get killed, why not give me a freaking hand!!

I feel for you Gtzisshe, it's tough. Only advice - get him tested asap. We went years trying to get one after it was clear there was a 'problem' - had started as delayed speech, increasing food pickiness, then behavioural issues. When D was your boy's age it was so tough. About half a year later his Dad quit working because we couldn't have D in care - he got 'asked to leave.' It was so bad. Family 'dos were a disaster - and we copped so much judgement everywhere. It took a long time, but we finally got a diagnosis and for us, that was a relief and a starting point - now we knew what we were tackling. Long road, lots of decisions, tough on all of us. But .. D's 10 now, back in mainstream school and - bless his latest report card - scraping into 'average.' Back when he was 5, we were told he was and would always be 'special needs.' He's still difficult as hell, some days truly suck, and we do a lot to keep him on a good path. But sometimes - just sometimes - life throws you a winning ball.

The second organization coordinates with the first. With "feet on the ground" and the only shelter in Afganistan, they are able to get the soldiers' companions to safety while funding is found to return the animals to their soldiers.

@NapAssasin - have you checked out Amazon? They help authors with self-publishing - I've gotten quite a few books that were self-published that way and really enjoyed some of them (truthfully, some of them are absolute crap). Go to Kindle Support - scroll down to Make Money with Amazon and there's something about Independently Publishing with Us. After that, I have no idea but I think it's free or minimal cost. I've seen some kid's books on the free lists that have lots of pictures that people buy for their Kindle Fire. (I don't usually buy children's books. I either read non-fiction, murder mysteries or apocalyptic stuff).

The spelling/grammar errors drive me insane. One I can forgive, but multiple ones just show a lack of care from the author, leading me to assume they're equally careless with the plot.
I've reviewed a few books on Amazon and even gotten a little thank you response from a few authors. A few other authors I've friended on Facebook which is kind of neat.

I agree that self-publishing (with a good proofreader) can be a great road to publication. My book is NOT self-published (it's released through a publishing house and went through a lengthy copy- and line-editing process) but ebook outlets like Amazon and BN make it very easy to do yourself.
Finish your books and publish them, NapAssassin, you'll never regret doing it.

ReplyDeleteThere was an article recently about a guy who made a good living hiring $10/hr college grads to write reviews on Amazon. Most of them hadn't even read the book. They got talking points and submitted a positive short review. He got paid by the authors.
Amazon eventually cottoned on and banned him and he claims he is out of the business.
Incredible but true. I take all Amazon ratings with several grains of salt right now.

I didn't know about anything illegal the whole time I worked there. I always looked up to my boss as a mentor. My mind is blown. I worked for him for over 1/2 of my life. @Michel and @Alita - my son is "high functioning autistic". He's 21 now, and he's a great kid, but when he was little he had major behavioural problems, and his teens were even worse. People don't understand because most autistic kids look "normal". All I can say is that it eventually gets better and better as the kids learn to cope with social situations even if they don't totally understand them. ReplyDeleteSusanB, in a large ziploc, combine chili powder, chili flakes, garlic salt, cumin, paprika and (secret ingredient) Goya Adobo All Purpose Seasoning with Bitter Orange. If your area has a Mexican grocery store you will find it there, otherwise order online. Squeeze in the juice of two oranges and two limes, include the peels and add skirt steak. Leave it in for about an hour, or refrig overnight. Grill med rare then slice into strips. I use the same flavor combo on yellow, orange and red peppers and yellow onion, cut up, sauté with olive oil on the stove. Thanks you guys. My boss was selling insurance to people when he didn't have policies. He sent all of the $ overseas. Now hundreds of people who were hurt in on the job accidents will be responsible for the medical bills.
ReplyDeleteSo, Mr. king who was hurt on the job and is in a wheel chair with no legs will not be getting his long term disability check next month. It's heartbreaking.
have to 2nd the prop 37 .....wish i was in cali to get my vote in,If you live in California please vote YES on Prop 37. It is an initiative to require food manufacturers to list GMO ingredients on label!!!!

What is gmo?
ReplyDelete(Genetic modified organism) involves the insertion or deletion of genes, a process known to be in corn, canola soy and other crops. cross pollination, as well as health risks are associated. it is fairly new and we are just guinea pigs to see how it affects the body (long and short term). seems to have devastating effects on children much more so, as their bodies are still developing....the products are not marked, and big business does not want it to pass, although if it does, it may single handedly drive gmos from the supermarkets-due to popular opinion.
ReplyDeleteI just wanna post and promote a blog/fundraising page of a wee kid from Ireland - Wee Oscar Knox is only 4 but in the fight of his life against Neuroblastoma, an extremely rare and aggressive childhood cancer. He recently went to the States for life saving treatment but unfortuately has had a massive setback - can I ask you all for your prayers for this wee man?
