It is Adele. It sounds like I would expect a Bond song sung by Adele to sound. I think it shot to number one on iTunes because people wanted new Adele and not the stuff they have heard on the radio non-stop for the past two years.
I love classical music so this was up my ally. I only listened to the first minute because I am busy but what I heard I liked. I like that her voice starts out low with the music. She really does have a very classic voice as well.
I think it's the best rendition of a Bond song in ages. Adele is singing much better here, less throaty, and while she could've emulated Dame Shirley Bassey and gone all out like she did in "Goldfinger" she brought it down.
Perhaps she won't have the Curse of the Bond Song - nearly all of them have tanked, no matter who they got to sing them. Off the top of my head, the only memorable Bond songs are Goldfinger, For Your Eyes Only (which really is meh, but I bought the 45 at the time), and Live and Let Die. There's another one on the tip of my tongue (or fingers?), but I can't seem to get it out.
@shakey - Are you thinking of (spacing on) Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon?
I heard this in the car today. I liked the classic Bond tone of it, but I agree it does go on. It will probably work great in the film but I don't see it being a huge hit other then the initial bump just because it's Adele.
It's Adele, so I love it. She could be meowing alongside a chorus of cats in heat and I'd still buy the record.
ReplyDeleteI like it!
ReplyDeleteShe's kind of the perfect artist for it in this day and age. I love Adele but I'm not crazy about the song. It might grow on me though.
ReplyDeleteAdele is flawless. Set fire to the rain is probably my favorite by her.
ReplyDeleteGood voice, but boring boring boring song. Goes on forever.
ReplyDeleteIt takes you back to the classic Bond songs...well done Adele

ReplyDeleteI believe this movie's score is by Thomas Newman who is absolutely terrific. Looking forward to this one.
ReplyDeleteLike the song and love Adele. Has she had her baby yet?
ReplyDelete@strawberry girl, ditto.
ReplyDeleteWow, I think that stands proudly next to ANY of the classic, memorable Bond themes.
ReplyDeleteShe really has such a gift.
I think both she and the song are perfect. Love her voice. She sounds like such an old soul.
ReplyDeleteShe could sing the drive thru menu at a Burger King and I would buy it.

ReplyDeleteI already bought it.
I love it. Very James Bond

ReplyDeleteabsolutely lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove Adele, but this sounds like crap.
ReplyDelete"How many times can we have her sing the (meaningless) word 'Skyfall'? Let's do that."
It definitely sounds like a Bond song, I'll give them that.
I love Adele singing anything!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the new Bond film.
I have to say it's a kind of boring song. I think Portishead should do a James Bond song.
ReplyDeleteI really like it, love the orchestra... one of my favorite Bond themes was sung by Sheryl Crow for "tomorrow never dies"... love that song!
ReplyDeleteIt's no Live and Let Die. It's not even The World is Not Enough.
ReplyDeleteIt's got that sort of Adele lyrical issue of repeating shit ad nauseum. Yes. The skyfall. I get it.
i hear something like this and wish i could sing. my voice is horrible. like the stick figure of voice artistry. this is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI don't like it. It's very blah and sounds lazy.
ReplyDeleteI love "Many Shades of Black" that she performed with the Raconteurs.
ReplyDeleteSo, is it Adele and Taylor Swift this year competing for the Oscar for best original song for a movie?
ReplyDeleteShakey you might be thinking of The Spy Who Loved Me, a fave of mine by Carly Simon.
ReplyDeleteReally like this one by Adele. Very Bond-like yet it will hold it's own as an "Adele" hit.
@shakey That must be View to a Kill by Duran Duran
ReplyDeleteGoldfinger>>>>Skyfall
I heard it on the radio for the first time today and was kind of bored by it.

Ding ding ding for Nobody Does It Better - I also have that on 45.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not View to a Kill. It was a terrible song.
