LOL. They flung Linda Blair around like a rag doll. Linda Blair should sue the movie studios if she is currently suffering from neck and back problems.
Can't watch this! I saw The Exorcist as a teenager with a group of friends, not knowing what it was about... I screamed in my sleep that night, I was so freaked about it. It truly disturbed me in a way that I didn't know was there, for a long time. A few years ago it came on tv while I was home alone for the night, and I forced my adult self to watch it objectively. It really helped, tho "Tubular Bells" still makes me antsy!
I tried watching close encounters of the 4th (or 3rd) kind. Holy shiz balls. 5 minutes in (not even) I made mr.smash turn it off. Usually alien movies don't get me but it is the physiological aspect that I can't handle. I can watch Prometheus and all the Alien movies all day without (liar!) flinching.
I, too, read that she was injured making this movie and I can see why. I think I'm of the rare kind that is not freaked by this movie at all. However, the Spirit Halloween store has a replica of her in her nightgown and the head spins. THAT creeps me out. I don't like that thing at all.
This movie scared the shit out of me when I went to see it with my mom. She had to be in the bathroom while I took a showers. When the song comes up I always shut it off. As an adult I decided to confront my fears. So I watched it with my friends during Halloween. I was Ok with it but I still don't like it.
I happened to catch the 2nd half of the movie on cable a few weeks back--having never seen any of it before--and was surprised that, while I thought it was definitely suspenseful, it didn't really scare me (well, any more than the general topic of demonic possession does...), and the special effects seemed somewhat crude and obvious. However, I was in junior high when the movie originally came out, and remember hearing people talk about it, so I can definitely understand people being scared enough to piss themselves or pass out while watching it in a theatre in 1973, because that topic, and that particular way of handling it, hadn't been shown in a general-release studio production before.
I did a little quick Googling afterwards, and apparently both Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn suffered from back injuries during the filming as a result of being slammed around so much; in Ellen's case, it was the scene where she's flung backwards into the corner of the bedroom. And no, I'm not surprised that Linda ended up as the poster child for messed-up teenage actresses in the '70s, after starring in The Exorcist, Born Innocent (with its assault-with-a-broomstick shower scene), and Sarah T.: Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic; it would have been more surprising if she'd ended up completely unscathed.
Loved seeing these clips. They are more spooky than what made it into the film. Apparantly they are going to be releasing 4 or 5 more new clips just in time for Halloween.
OK, the head-doing-a-360 bit didn't scare me per se, but it was definitely both creepy and nausea-inducing; yes, I'd like to know how they did it, and yes, seeing the model that SaintsFan described would squick me bigtime. *shudder* (BTW, I know Mercedes McCambridge did the voice-over work, but did Linda actually have to say all that stuff so that the dubbing would come out right?)
I also have the original Tubular Bells album on vinyl, bought probably around '79-80 or so, and a good friend who was a couple of years ahead of me at college told me the tale of how some fiendishly clever person w/a really powerful stereo system and speakers the size of refrigerators scared the crap out of the entire campus during finals week one year around midnight by moving his speakers to his dorm room windows, turning the volume up to 10, and dropping the needle on the album...supposedly you could see lights flipping on all over campus, and not a little screaming to boot... (You kids nowadays w/your damn iPods don't know what you're missing when it comes to on-campus stereo wars...and get off my damn lawn while you're at it, too! ;-)
Saw a doc about the making of this film. Poor Linda fractured a vertebrae from being slammed down on that bed so many times. No compensation. My how times have changed...
I have still never seen this movie. I'm scared to watch it. I should have watched it when I went through my scary movie phase, as I think I'm too old and would have nightmares now.

ReplyDeleteCReepy.
ReplyDeleteI really hate you for posting this.
ReplyDeleteThis is super creepy. It looks so real, and this isn't even the end product. I don't know how they did it.
ReplyDelete...and I was thinking the same thing...if she has neck and back injuries, she should sue.
I'm pretty sure I remember reading that she did have injuries from that.
ReplyDeleteEven though my knowledge and experience kicks in and I know exactly how this film was made, it still creeps me out and scares the bejeezus
ReplyDeleteIf this is creeping you guys out.. I don't wanna see it
ReplyDelete*hides under the covers*

Physiological? Hahaha oh silly autocorrect physcological aspect! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's no wonder Blair was so screwed up for awhile.

ReplyDeleteHow did they do that? I thought it as a doll at first but then noticed she was too lifelike.
ReplyDeleteBing here I come...
Ok I am having trouble finding out how they achieved this effect, can anyone enlighten me?

This movie never bothered me, I thought it was boring. Not as boring as part 2 tho, my God, that one was boring

Scariest movie ever. I can't watch it. Salem's Lot still freaks me out, too.

ReplyDeleteFor those of you confused about how this is done, you could do a whole lot worse than check here.
