Take me to the river- talking heads version.
Everyone would dance!
I chose A Groovy Kind Of Love by Phil Collins. First thing I learned about my husband was that we share love for Phil. I wish I could have chosen Deer Stop by Goldfrapp but it's a tad dark.
My first wedding was "A Song for You" by Donny Hathaway. What a wasted choice - he'd never heard of Donny and didn't care about music. When my BF and I get married, it will probably be "My Girl", which may sound like a cliche choice but it does not come without an awesome story. The first weekend we met was in SF, and we were waiting in line to get breakfast at Dottie's. There was a homeless man serenading the line of people, and we had our first dance to him singing "My Girl" in the freezing cold rain.
Tim McGraw--- My Best Friend
Beautiful story amber!
Give Yourself To Love, Kate Wolf. Great wedding song and even though it's a bit of a cliche in our hippie dippy social set, we used it anyway and it still makes me cry.
Just got married two Fridays ago. We danced to "I Only Have Eyes for You," by The Flamingos. I thought that was a pretty good choice.
I doubt I will marry, but I like "Real Love" by the Beatles. Really, anything by the Beatles. Might walk down the aisle to "Something," have "Here Comes the Sun" as the recessional, etc. The whole actual wedding is doubtful, though.
The Title song from The Princess Bride "Storybook Love" (Bridesmaids walked down aisle to it) and then "At Last" by Etta James for me to walk down the aisle. We went through a lot together to finally get to the wedding. Both were super significant to us.
Ours was Dig by Incubus. It's gorgeous acoustically.
Divorce Me C.O.D. (Don Walser & The Pure Texas band). And we were divorced 10 months later. go figure.
Congratulations, Comma Chaser! Hope your day was perfect. :)
@smash - thanks! We love it!
Here, There, Everywhere by the Beatles on an acoustic guitar played on the beach.
Better Together by Jack Johnson.
I will never marry but if I would I'd choose the song "Nothing compares to you", in it's original version from The Family.
At Last! For many reasons. Although I'm sure it will end up being something else. My BF has much better taste in music than me.
OMG Robot. Your avi is so cute! Is that your little one? Adorable!!!
In my fantasy world, it will be Hard to Concebtrate by the Chili Peppers
Which wedding?
It's been so long ago, but I know Endless Love was used for one wedding.
@dia Yes, that's Miss Piper! :) Thanks!
Into You Like a Train- The Psychedelic Furs
We're trying to pick still, for our wedding in May. Cliche, but maybe "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton. If it wasn't too fast, I'd rather have "8 Days a Week" by the Beatles.
I chose "Summer Samba" by Bebel Gilberto but can't listen anymore - it's a great song but my marriage is in the toilet.
my first wedding song was "Save the Best for Last" because I had discovered two weeks prior to the wedding I was wife number 3..I did not know about #2..should have realized..for my second marriage, "In your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel..I saved the best for last..
We only had traditional wedding/church music at the ceremony, and no dancing at our lunch-time reception. Boring.
If we could travel back in time, though, it would be Islands in the Stream, the classic Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers duet, just because we're HUGE dorks and think that is the best song EVAH! And we would sing it to each other whist performing a snappy dance number. I am a very lucky woman :-)!!!!
Maybe we'll renew own vows for our 25th anniversary and do it!! I'm calling Mr. Frufra!
Idotherobot- I want to pinch those adorable little cheeks! Such a beautiful baby!!
Do it Frufra!
Great story Amber, it made me a little teary.
Redronnie, wow. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.
Elvis, instrumental, can't help falling in love with you.
Marc Cohn's True Companion.
Wow! Wonderfull song!!
I had two songs. My hubs chose David Gates's "The Goodbye Girl." I chose "Save the Best for Last."
Getting married this November! Our REAL song is "Laid" by James but we went with "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. We have a band so they're gonna make it more slow dance-y.
"Advice For The Young At Heart" by Tears For Fears
My first marriage was "Everything I do I do it for you" by Bryan Adams.
My second and last marriage, we got hitched at the courthouse, so no music. While we were dating our song was "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down.
If I ever get married, first dance will be to "Ain't That a Kick In the Head" by Dean Martin. And the wedding will be presided over by Elvis. I like to keep it classy :)
Our first dance was "Come Rain or Come Shine" (recording sung by Bette Midler). The sentiments seemed to me what marriage is all about. Worked so far (18+ years). :)
"The Sweetest Thing" by Juice Newton
lOVE ALL THESE CHOICES AND STORIES. Divorced now but when I got married our song was First Time ever i SAW YOUR FACE by Roberta FLack. I fell in love with that song when i was 10 yrs old and it was my only choice... the ex didn't care one way or the other. Which surprisingly is the way he remained about me as well...hence the divorce LOL
Back in the late 70's, my song of choice for my first wedding was "There is Love". My ex chose "Beth" by Kiss. I knew it wasn't going to last before I even walked down the aisle. Back then, my song should have been "I Knew the Bride When She Used to Rock & Roll". He was a great guy, still is,just not for me.
First marriage was some schmaltz thing by Celine Dion (the ex picked it - blech.)
Second time around, we chose "Love is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet.
"I'll Stand By You," The Pretenders.
@ CommaChaser - I had that song at my first wedding! I still love it. My father/daughter dance was to Rainbow Connection. THAT song brings tears to my eyes.
First Wedding = Be Thou My Vision as I walked down the aisle. Old Irish Blessing as we recessed
"Follow me", John Denver.
Too bad these lyrics came back to haunt me when he screwed our son's friend's mom....
"its by far the hardest thing I've ever done, to be so in love with you ans so alone...."
Just You and Me - Sylvester
"People Who Died" by the Jim Carroll Group.
The acoustic version of "Walking After You" by The Foo Fighters was out first song. We interpreted it to us being willing to work on the hard problems so our marriage will survive. So far so good..Coming up on #9 wedding and 16 together.
Congrats Comma!
Oops I did it again - Britney Spears
It was the 80s. Puffy sleeves and permed hair. When the parents joined us it was the Stephen Bishop theme from Tootsie.
Our dance was Here, There and Everywhere by the Beatles.
Please don't point and laugh.
@Comma Chaser: First, CONGRATS! And second, that was our first dance as well and we are going on 15 years =) Seems like a lucky choice!
Misfits - American Nightmare. Not joking.
We just had our 25th. If we were going to renew I'd pick Knopfler's "our shangrilah"
not married and probably won't be but I am partial to "all i want is you" U2.
That's amazing!
We had two as well, 'Friday I'm in Love' by the Cure (his choice but I love it too, and yes I know the lyrics), and 'Crazy' by Icehouse was mine. Absolutely adore that song. We had a DJ who played mostly 80s songs, cheesy but great fun. We've been married 10 years now, together 15.
Amber, beautiful story, love it!
Comma Chaser, Congrats! Cheers to many many happy years!
Pilly-too funny! ;)
I got married on a beach, walked down the "aisle" to Together by The Raconteurs.
Just married about a month ago and we danced to "Dream a Little Dream", the Mama Cass version
Mine too! Two weeks ago :)
First wedding had no song, which explains a lousy marriage. Second wedding was "What are you doing the rest of your life". Its a song I've always loved and was a no-brainer for us.
Ellin, I have the Sting/Chris Botti version on my iPod. Gives me chills every time.
We had "Ribbon in the Sky" by Stevie Wonder.....it still gives me goosebumps!
CK76 - dish, please! I am a huge John Denver fan. I still get tears in my eyes when I listen to his songs.
Plus, I love juicy gossip! Would you consider sharing what you know :-)??
OMG Sherry- that's one of my favorite songs ever. Love them!
A long time coming. The tragically hip
I have my imaginary wedding planned.
My best friend is a professional singer and during the service she will do New Kids On The Block's I'll Be Loving You (Forever), and as I leave church the Glee version of Bruno Mars' Marry You.
I'm not sure about the first dance as the groom should probably have a say. I'll be sure to ask him his thoughts when I meet him.
Is this Love, Bob Marley. Love it!
Thanks, smash! :) She was 5 month here. She's now 15 months but I just love that picture!
Vanessa Williams: "Sometimes the snow falls down in June.."
@Sarah - I really hope that happens for you. I looooooooooove "I'll Be Loving You Forever"! And also "Please Don't Go Girl" hahaha.
Oh yeah, I have two friends who had humorous wedding songs and they matched their personalities so well that it worked.
One groom was a massive Manchester City Football Club fan so they had Blue Moon, the club song.
The other had I Could Be So Good For You, the theme tune to the UK tv series Minder,
I thought everyone was supposed to play "The Wedding Song" by Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul and Mary).
@Amber oh, it's going to happen! Unless I end up marrying Donnie Wahlberg, *then* it might be a bit tacky!
We walked into the room to "Glad All Over" by the Dave Clark Five. Our first dance was "I Will" by the Beatles. We had been together 16 years by the time we married. We wanted to songs to be fun and flirty.
When you say nothing at all by Ronan Keating.
Did not have a traditional wedding - neither of us would be comfortable doing the whole "romantic" thing in front of people...*L*. I always thought "God Only Knows" would be a great wedding song, though.
Congratz!!! Many years of happiness to you both.
I just got married a few weeks ago and we chose Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are".
@katie - Actually, I just said, "Oh, wow! Those are two excellent songs!" (Once I remembered how the Tootsie one went..."it's you, it's you, it's you I've been waiting for, all of my life..." At first I was thinking of "Arthur's Theme." At THAT, I would have pointed and laughed. Heh heh.)
Some of these I don't get, though, but that's okay. Kinda like when people pick "I Will Always Love You." It's a BREAKUP song. ???
Ours was Dangerously in Love by Beyonce.
Love that song
growing old with you from the wedding singer
We chose "Follow You, Follow Me" by Genesis
Thanks all for the good wishes, amigos. We appreciate it!
Congrats to everyone who just got married or has recently celebrated a milestone in their relationship with their partner.
1st husband/wedding in 1989 - we chose Sea of Love - Honeydrippers version. He was and still is a big Led Zep fan. I guess I cared about it then, but that was a long time ago...
2nd hubby/wedding in 2009 (20 years later - gasp!) - we chose True by Spandau Ballet because it reminded us of an extremely loving and intimate moment from our courtship.
Late to the party, but we had "I Feel Good" by James Brown as we left the church - it was great to see the elderly aunts grooving on down in their pastel hats and flowery frocks in the church aisle. Also of course the guys - men in kilts grooving is a sight to see!
"Could Not Ask for More" by Edwin McCain. My husband was a huge fan and it was our first concert together.
Ah! I forgot about "Follow You, Follow Me." I guess I was thinking about in-the-church-or-at-the-ceremony wedding songs and not first-dance songs this whole time. I used to say that I wanted "FYFM" as my first-dance song. The Beatles stuff is in the church.
Love these stories!
I'm not married (yet - there is always hope, lol!), but I love "You're My Everything" by Santa Esmeralda. An oldie but a goodie.
Karrots-I love that song.
Everyone who recently married/celebrated an anniversary of ANY sort-Congrats!
Amber-sweet story :)
We were supposed to have our first dance to 'The Way You Look Tonight' by Frank Sinatra but by some sort of misunderstanding we ended up with 'If I Ain't Got You'
by Alicia Keys. Oh well. We're coming up on our 7th anniversary (of dating) and 2nd wedding anniversary, so I'm just super excited we got this far, regardless of whatever song was played first :)
I'm getting married Saturday and doing the 'playlists" is one for the few things I've got some creative control over.
I (we) chose Ray LaMontagne "you are the best thing" for our first dance.
I may read the rest of the comments tonight and add to the playlists.
robbie robertson's, broken arrow
Frufa, I think she meant her ex slept with son's friend's mom, not John Denver :s
We're getting married next year and before the handfasting we'll have classic rock played by the London Symphony Orchestra (on CD though!). Thought it would be funny to have classic rock paid classicly as we're getting married in our favourite nightclub, The Classic Grand :)
First dance was pre hubby's choice, Stand By Me. As we've stood by each other through various difficulties, I thought his choice was perfect :)
I walked down the aisle to Gorecki's - Lamb in the sweeping Instrumental part.
If I should die this very moment, I wouldn't fear
For I have found completeness, just being here.
Wrapped in the warmth of you,
Loving every breath of you.
Still my heart this moment,
Or it might burst.
My friends and I have a rule:
We'd only marry a person if they laughed at our senses of humour. To that end the songs we'd have as our wedding songs are part of that. :)
My choice is Closer by NIN.
:)
I walked down the aisle to Spiritualized "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" and our first dance to Cat Power's version of "Sea of Love". Both songs were mucked up by the DJ's for two different hilarious reasons but it makes for a great memory/story. I would marry my husband every week if I could.
I don't want a wedding, but if I did, it would be "Beast of Burden" by the Stones.
Been to long to remember what we danced to...but if I did it again it would be "May I Have This Dance" by Anne Murphy.
May I have this dance
For the rest of my life
Would you be my partner
every night
When were together
it feels so right
May I have this dance
for the rest of my life.......
We got married at 10AM and had a brunch reception with a small trio. We met at a dating service and for our official toast my sister and bro-in-law read the "What I'm Looking For" section from our dating profiles. Our first dance was to "My Romance."
--------------
My romance doesn't have to have a moon in the sky
My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by
No month of May, no twinkling stars, no hideaway, no soft guitars
My romance doesn't need a castle rising in Spain
Nor a dance to a constantly surprising refrain
Wide awake I can make my most fantastic dreams come true
My romance doesn't need a thing but you
-----
Thirteen years later and he's still the love of my life. Monday blues all gone!!
Fly Me To the Moon for walking down the aisle. The version with rank Sinatra and Astrid Gilberto. He has 'In Other Words...' engraved on the inside of his ring. Ourfirst dance song was I'll Cover You from Rent
First song was Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra. We met on a cruise when we were teenagers and got married 9 years later. My favorite line is "Ever since that night, we've been together. Lovers at first sight, in love forever"
We had At Last by Etta James, it's been overused but it was kind of tongue in cheek for us because we dated for seven years before we married and everyone was on our backs about taking forever to get married :)
This is great! I'm getting married in November too and love all of the suggestions! We're dancing to "Dance Me To the End of Love"-- Madeline Peyroux version. It was the first song he gave me-- when we were only best friends at the time :).
Our song was It Had to Be You - such a classic and that was 1990!
First dance was to Devoted To You by the Everly Brothers. In the church before the wedding, I had a string quartette playing When you Wish Upon a Star (your dreams come true) and True Love from the movie High Society
My "inner teenage princess" chose the song I'll Be by Edwin Mccain. It was a good song, and I always wanted to dance to it at my wedding. My husband didn't care so he went with it. I wish now that we had picked a song together that meant something to us. That what happens when you get married young I guess. LOL
Heh...
Another one bites the dust by Queen
There You Are by Martina McBride - it was in Where the Heart Is, but I knew it before then...just loved the lyrics.
That was my wedding song too! :)
@Miz - thanks for straightening me out - upon rereading CK76's comment, that makes sense. Duh. Sorry I'm an idiot, CK76. Please forgive me. I stand by my John Denver love, though.
You have to admit, my interpretation of that comment would make for a VERY interesting piece of gossip. Again, my apologies.
I am loving this thread! I'm smiling and tearing up all at once reading your stories.
Walked down the aisle to Such Great Heights, the Iron and Wine version and walked back to The Postal Service fast version of the same song. Both were played acoustically by a group of our friends. Perfect.
"I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons)" by Nat King Cole...my late hubby & I didn't really get to dance to it because his nephew, our DJ, was drunk, but we picked the song together. I played it at my husband's funeral two years later, when he died from epilepsy (SUDEP). I still can't hear it without crying 10 years later. It's a song that hits you in the heart...
Still in Love (Kissing You)-Beyonce
It's the song from Romeo+Juliet that Des'ree sings, but I preferred the Beyonce set-up, so we went with that for the first dance. The song has such a beautiful crescendo and has a lot of meaning for us.
Plus it reminds me of the movie & I absolutely LOVE that scene!!
Mari: As a longtime NIN fan, I'm not convinced anything in the catalog would really work at a wedding, although I can see "Closer" being a hoot an hour or so into the dancing, when everyone's already shitfaced. ;-)
Never been married, and the odds of it happening at my age are between slim and none, but I definitely agree that if your senses of humor don't mesh, forget about it! I've heard of the theme from The Muppet Show being used as a recessional; I've always thought the Charlie Brown theme (complete w/head-bobbing) would be a hoot as well. For something really off-the-wall, how about "Birdhouse in Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants? Or, if you'd like something slow and sexy that isn't "At Last," how about Morphine's "You Look Like Rain"? (Back in the "goofy" category, another song on the same album, "You Speak My Language," would also work. After all, if you don't "get" each other, why the hell are you getting married in the first place?
Amber, I love that story! And congratulations, Comma, and all of you new brides, and cheers to those who have anniversarys to celebrate!
Djhob, that is the ringtone that only plays when my husband calls, so I approve! Gprincess, one of my besties used that and it was so sweet.
And I'm with you, Reno, this is the perfect way to end my Monday...our song is Sinatras "the way you look tonight", but a few years ago my son told me that the RHCP's "zephyr" reminded him of stories about our wedding day because of the line "and in this perfect weather, we'll find our place together" so now it's that one, too. And now I've geared up again!
Our first dance was Lost Together by Blue Rodeo.
I think of my hubby as home. No matter where we are, or whatever is going wrong, as long as we're together everything is ok.
Wonderous Stories by Yes. I walked does the aisle to it.
First wedding we did not have a song. I really wanted the Beatles, "I Will", but the groom didn't like the Beatles...WTF?! Whose does not like the Fucking Beatles for christ's sake? That should have been my first clue. The second wedding, I wanted "Never Tear us Apart" by Inxs, but it was too hard to dance to, so we went with "At Last" for the first dance (this was 1998 and it hadn't been too overused then, plus it was appropriate as I was a single mom and had found a great guy) and then "Let's Stay Together"- Al Green for the wedding party dance.
Whatever man I con into marrying me will first have to do the dance from Dirty Dancing with me to "Time Of My Life", then we'll dance to "Dreams" by The Cranberries. :3
First dance was "I Only Have Eyes for You", performed by The Flamnigos which was the only song the DJ played, even though we gave him a playlist of songs we and the guest like, we ended up w/ a bunch of rap and techno stuff.
My wedding I called off 5 weeks before it was to happen, we were Star Wars geeks and had the imperial march lol
Now I can see myself picking Fix me by 10 years, or song by a band called One Minute Silece called I to our own
"Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin
- i love the retro, intimate and warm vibe of the music
- the event was held at a venue on a beach
- there s a lot of travelling in mr babo s life and mine :-)
- i ll admit to you: Kevin Spacey ...
Prayin' for the end of time by Meatloaf.
@dirtydisher, that reminds me of my funeral song, 'Life Is A Lemon (& I Want My Money Back)' by Meatloaf!
I picked it when I was a kid, my little cousin was terminal and we used to talk about our own funeral alot. Crazy kids!
I'm still using it though, hell mend my family if they don't use it!
Adore by Prince :)
Beyond the Sea, Bobby Darin
I think I would like 'It must be love' by Madness.
I will never get married. If I trapped a bunch of people in a room, I'd make them listen to the Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode all night. There would be free beer.
Our first dance was to crazy love by van Morrison. It was a compromise.
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
I'm probably a week late to the discussion, back from vacation and trying to read back what I missed.
Our wedding ceremony was all religious music, but the "dance that wasn't" (we had our reception in the church basement because we're poor, and they didn't allow dancing) started with a Rush song.
But it was a perfect Rush song. The Sphere. "We can walk our road together if our goals are all the same. We can run alone and free if we pursue our different aims. Let the truth of love be lighted, let the love of truth shine clear. Sensibility, armed with sense and liberty, with the Heart and Mind united in a single perfect sphere."
