Your Turn

This is a photo of Snoop Doog taking a hit off a bong lit by his son. Would you do drugs with your child?

  1. Not a chance, aside from wine with dinner (when my children are of legal age) we won't be drinking together either.
Dina Lohan I'm looking at you!!!

  2. Um, no. Or with my parents. Or in general.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Parents smoke and drink with their legal-age offspring all the time. Both tobacco and alcohol are addictive drugs.

    Just saying.

  4. Robert Downey Sr. gave his kid drugs, and look how that turned out.

  5. I've shared some green with Mom on vacation. I think there is a big difference between a friendly bowl and shooting up together. Same as having a cocktail if you ask me.

To some people smoking pot iz no big deal. Its no like they are shooting up. I would not, however.

  8. Regardless of what I think about whether or not marijuana should be legalized, I don't think promoting illegal activities to your child (18+ or not) is a good example to be setting. Obviously it's no secret that Snoop gets high, but in this instance it might be best to operate under the "do as I say, not as I do" rule.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If I had kids, I would not do drugs with them. However, Snoop could twist my arm to take a hit off of his bong. Especially if he asked me by saying "Take a hizzle off my bizzle, Baby Boo."

  11. This is so sad. He's letting his son throw his future away. A one time football star all his son does is get high and instead of knocking some sense into him snoop gets high with him. He's the next dina lohan.

  12. @Amber - it's amazing how often you say what I was about to.

  13. no. i dont even let them have wine with dinner. i actually quit drinking awhile back because i didn't want ANY "well YOU drink" from my kids. i feel like kids try and one-up you on things like sex, drugs and drinkie.

booze is the drug of choice here, parents buy it for their teens parties. my bff and i go round and round about this. she says its better for them to drink at home, i say their bodies cannot toleratw it at any leel. i come from a family of problem drinkers, so frankly it scares me.

  14. I think NOFX summed it up pretty well: "doint drugs with parents is just wrong"

Nope. Never. And I smoke pot but I will never with my kids or nieces or nephews or my folks. I have with siblings and other peoples parents tho.

  15. my mom and I smoke weed together, whenever she comes to visit, she takes a couple puffs off what I'm smoking. I have my MM card. Who cares.

  16. Im 21, by the way. I really dont see the big deal. It was awkward the first time, but now its just whatever. She is a huge hippie, we dont see weed as a drug. At all. lol, that thought is just rediculous. Just because the governtment classifies it as a drug.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I've smoked pot with my dad quite a few times but not until I was in my late twenties. No big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think it would be ridiculous for Snoop to tell his son not to smoke weed if everyone knows Snoop smokes all the time. Obviously to him pot is no big deal so it's not shocking to see him smoke with his kid. I haven't smoked pot in years so I will not be smoking pot with my kids.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Um, if you are responsible people with jobs and a house and you pay your bills AND smoke, isn't that a good example?
My son never knew we smoked. Until he was in his second year of college and my sister told him!
Needless to say, he was quite happy to be able to smoke with us.
People are so damn dumb when it comes to pot. It does not ruin your life, it enhances it. SO much less harmful than alcohol.
Would you rather smoke with your kid (obviously OVER 18 minimum) at home, or have your kid out drinking and driving?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Never. My kid has never even see me take a drink.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've had a few drinks with my dad as an adult - I can't imagine under any circumstances doing drugs with either of my parents. My brother and I still talk about the day around 25 years ago when our dad said something about he wouldn't mind trying weed. Even though brother and I have done it, we were shocked beyond belief. And no, we would never have brought some to him - he still would have been furious that one of his kids was breaking the law.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This is not okay. I'm far from a conservative tightass, but leave your offspring out of the goddamn drug equation. And I may piss a few people off by saying this, but marijuana IS illegal...I'm for MM for cancer pain in terminal patients ONLY. (I work in Oncology and I see the ugly stuff), but motherfuckers walking around high off their asses for "cataracts" is a whole other ballgame. Ending my rant...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm in my mid 30's and I've noticed that several people I grew up with who have a parent that smokes and encouraged it when they were 18 still smoke today. IMO it seems that the kids I know are life long smokers vs the kids who's parents did not encourage it just smoked in high school or college. I think we would be a lot better off with it legalized for many reasons but do not believe a parent should smoke with a kid. It encourages incorporating it into your daily lifestyle as an adult.

    ReplyDelete
  24. There is only one person in the world I ever wanted to smoke with - my dad. Mission accomplished. I'm not planning on having any children, but I'd rather they do it with me than hide it from me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just found out from my mom that she toked up once and enjoyed it. I smoke regularly and am totally willing to offer her some someday so we can smoke together if she wants.

Could make for a very interesting Thanksgiving! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't believe his son is so grown up! I guess the reality show was a long time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would never get high if I was in the vicinity of my hypothetical children while they're growing up. No cigarettes ever. Likewise, I'd never want to be drunk around them.

But once they're adults? I don't see the problem. My dad and I have played beer pong and flip cup together at parties (I'm 29) when it was too late for him to set a bad example for me. He even gave some to me for my friends twice before my oblivious brother dug up the garden.

What's funny is that my dad only told me that he was growing because I told him that I'd tried it. My idiot brother lied and said that he'd never tried it, so Dad never shared any with him.

  28. *some weed

Took the entire subject out of that sentence.

  29. I’m not even going to get into marijuana use and a lot of people’s stereotypical depiction of what they think marijuana users do or don’t do but I will say the following: If your child is an adult and would like to join you, they should have that option. You should teach your children how to think on their own and make decisions based on what is morally and logically right. Just because a man made law says something is illegal, it doesn't mean it is morally or logically wrong. You need to use your head and deduce if your actions are causing harm to others. Being a hypocrite and a liar is far worse than sharing a joint with your adult child. So as an adult, if you are blatantly lying to your children about any of your actions whether it is drug/alcohol use or even your extreme knitting obsession, you may want to re-evaluate your overall relationship with your children because drug/alcohol use is the least of your problems.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you Kirpez!
I do NOT understand the people who won't even drink in front of their kid. Yeah, don't get drunk, but really? You're gonna act all high and mighty and perfect....They will probably rebel even more....

Oh well, everybody does what they think is best.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not a chance in hell!

For one thing, if I smoke (which I don't anymore) I do it to feel young and have fun. I don't feel any need to party with my kid, that would just feel sooooo weird! They don't need to see me like that! And second, as long it's illegal I would advise them not to do it. I have two little girls. I hope they never ever smoke anything!

    ReplyDelete
  32. My experience is different, I left home at an early age. I had my own apartment & job by sixteen. A judge had taken custody from my mom and I was as close to an emancipated minor that NYS allows at 15. So, at sixteen, when my mom, dad, (who was not around till this time) and I all were sitting around, my dad passed the bowl to me, yup, I hit it. Mom smacked me upside the head, hit it, and that was the end of that. They really had no place telling me what I could & could not do at that point.

And yea, I'll probably smoke with my kids too, if they choose to partake, when they are enrolled in college.

    ReplyDelete
  33. ^^@NaNa - "I don't feel any need to party with my kid, that would just feel sooooo weird!" I completely agree! And I think that goes for my kids or my parents.

    @ Amber, totally agree!

  34. I was raised by hippies, my mom gave me a bong for my 13th birthday to get me to smoke pot with her.. I turned her down. It kind of freaked me out to be honest. I wouldn't do drugs with my kids..

  35. My dad smoke weed and he has no clue that I know! I smoke weed and he has no clue!!! I like it that way!!!

  36. I have one word: boundaries.

No matter what, no matter how old your kids are, no matter what your kids do or don't do when you're not round: you will always be their parent.

As parents, we have an obligation to be their parent, not their friend.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I had this discussion with a grown son and other relatives during vacation this summer.

I never have with my children. Since we're all subject to drug testing these days because of our jobs, it won't be happening in the future either.

Drinking on the other hand, is a different story.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I started drinking with my mom when I was 13. I will never do that with my kids.

My aunt used to smoke with her daughter and my sister. They also did pills and god knows what else together. My cousin (the daughter) was found dead in an abandoned house that had obviously been cleaned cause they were cooking meth in it. She was face down on a couch with a crack pipe underneath her. She had been there hours before someone called to report it. Presumably after they cleaned and aired the house out.

A cousin on the other side of my family, same thing. Uncle grew pot and smoked with his kids. Aunt is a pill popper and heavy drinker so they partook in that as well. Their son was found on the ground by the porch dead. He had so much in his system he died slowly in the front yard when he couldn't make the step up onto the porch and hit his head on the concrete and I hope he passed out and wasn't aware of what was happening to him. My aunt practically tripped over him on her way to the car to go to work.

I know these are extremes, but with it happening to both sides of my family and seeing the devestation it left everyone, I don't see even taking a chance letting something like that happen to my kids.

    ReplyDelete
  39. For all of you pot smokers, have you tried other drugs as well? One big argument against pot is that it leads to harder drugs. Is that true in your experience? Were you more likely to try other things?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Not when they are underage, but over 18, why not?

To suggest that Marijuana is somehow worse than alcohol is a naive and uneducated judgement.

MJ has been proven to be an effective form of treatment for SEVERAL medical ailments, including, but not limited to, cancer, glaucoma, migraines, parkinson's, MS, Bechette's, AIDs/HIV, Sickle Cell, etc.

And unlike the so-called "Legal" drugs (aks pills) -- MJ is a non-addictive substance with little to no side effects.

There are only two reasons MJ is not legal in the US. 1) Pharma companies become screwed if it is, since it treats so many ailments (bye bye Valium, Xanax) and thus the beauracrats invested would lose money (so there's no way they'd pass a bill to legalize) and 2) The US Gov't consistently makes money off of drug cartels, which are funded by political animosity (US/Mexico).

To suggest this young man is throwing is life away is an uniformed assumption. THere are many burners out there who don't spend their free time eating cheetos and listening to the Dead. Most have real jobs and regularly contribute to society. They pay taxes and chances are you have had several conversations w/ them, while they were stoned (you just didn't know it).

Okay - done w/ my rant. Hi everyone, I'm Panda...long time reader, first time commenter. :)

  41. I smoked with both sets of parents as an adult , but that was a very long time ago. I haven't smoked in 25+ years. It was a different time then. I would never smoke with my son. My son has never seen me drink, either. I don't want him to drink or do drugs for a good reason and I need to set an example.
Having a MM card is not a free pass. Pot is still against Federal law and unless you have a REAL medical condition, having a card is abusing the system. Medical marijuana saved my life once, actually, so I wholly advocate it. (I took pills). But, I did have a real condition that only THC helped. In my state, which is WA, ppl still get busted, card or no card. The DEA and local authorities are still out there busting legitimate MM suppliers and illegal ones.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @ Panda - Welcome! I agree with everything you said about marijuana. However, regardless of his age, the guy could potentially end up in jail and with a criminal record because it IS illegal - whether it should be or not. I, personally, would want to deter my kids from knowingly participating in illegal activities as that may hurt their future prospects. Having a rap sheet doesn't exactly look so hot to a lot of potential employers :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. @ bobbi - That story is awful. I'm so sorry :(

  44. Damn, where are they? Syria? That porch looks like it's situated in a war zone. This alone is a good reason not to do drugs-with your children.

  45. Alcohol and cigarettes are bigger gateway drugs than pot.

Wow, adidas must be so proud to be so prominently featured in this photo. Reminds me of that t-shirt from years ago with the adidas flower turned into a marijuana leaf.

His son is on the high school football team. This photo could cause him serious trouble.

  46. Not until they are adults and can handle it maturely. I know my 16 year old nephew smokes, but he is still irresponsible and under his parents supervision for good reason. When he is out of the house, paying his own bills and making a living, sure. I have the same attitude toward alcohol and smoking. By making it totally forbidden, you are encouraging its use as an act of rebellion. By not criminalizing it, but also showing it takes responsibility to manage, you encourage smart decision making.

Btw, weed legalization is on the ballot in Wash State this fall. I think it will pass - should be interesting to see the reax of the Feds

  50. @SueRH Im in recovery. 10 months sober. I did EVERYTHING you can think of. Thankfully I managed to get out with only some financial issues, but also a few health issues. I started with pot. I don't think its typically a gateway drug unless you already have the tendency for addictive behaviors. The town I grew up in was flooded with drugs. It was abnormal if you didn't use. I know many people who only smoked pot or drank that didnt carry on with it after they got the partying out of their system. Some of my friends and I were not so lucky. Any other questions? Id be happy to honestly discuss anything. :)

  51. Absolutely Not! I like Snoops music but have no respect or like for him. Shame on him!

  52. My dad is coming to town in two weeks and you best your sweet ass I plan on getting high with him. I am also 25 though and haven't seen him since I was 18. He is more like an uncle since he didn't raise me.

My step dad on the other hand preached my whole growing up how all things are bad. For my 15 year old half brothers birthday he gave him a bowl of weed. That I do not agree with and wish I could kick his ass. Once you are 18 though, your body your life.

  56. A lot of idiocy and ignorance, is more like it.

Wake up, pilgrims. Marijuana is already legal! Effectively so, in states where 80% of the population live. It will be openly legal in Washington and Oregon after their initiatives pass this fall. After they institute full legalization and society doesn't crumble, most of the states where MJ is effectively decriminalized will go for full legalization.

Everyone in DC knows that the Obama administration will zero out enforcement of Federal MJ laws in his second term. The GOP will jaw jaw but they know that national decrim is inevitable.

If you've got a problem with that, well, I'm not where you could move where MJ prohibition will persist. Iran, maybe.

  57. My son is 22, lives with me when he isn't in college, and is "straight edge." If he did use marijuana, maybe hash, I wouldn't have an issue using it with him as long as certain safety precautions were met--no driving, no drinking at the same time, no other drugs, no crowd of people. And no photos.

My daughter is 17 and is estranged from me, hasn't spoken to me in over three years. Not much chance of it happening with her.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I would feel like a total pathetic loser if I smoked pot with my daughter.

I haven't smoked pot in almost 28 years and it never really was my cup of tea. I knew some people who got high (on pot and other drugs) with their parents and it really did lead to some very bad things.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The problem with marijuana is that it's illegal. I will drink in front of my kids if I ever have them because I am the adult and do it responsibly as I do now. I hate that marijuana is illegal, but it IS. If u want to smoke it, fine, but you shouldn't teach your kids to go against authority at a you g age or they will misinterpret that. Adults can make their own choices whether it's with other adult family members or not. I don't think Snoops kid is an adult yet? Is he over 18? Anyway, inhaling ANY smoke is bad for your body and keeps young bodies from developing properly. I used to sneak to the bathroom in highschool and just eat a pinch of weed. That way I never got caught smoking it at school like the other kids! I'm all about questioning authority BUT you have to obey the rules until you do the work to get the law you disagree with reversed. I was behind a car where I could smell that they were smoking weed. I was scared! I got pics of the plate at a red light n then I'm like there's no one to report this to. Then he switched to a cigarette 5 minutes before he pulled into the restaurant (of course!)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Weed isn't any worse than alcohol or cigarettes, IMO. And HMFY, I smoke with my parents, I am going to my dads for dinner tonight and bong rips are the first course, lol. My parents smoked my whole life, but we never smoked with either of them until I was 18. Before then we all just hid it from each other. I and many others like me out there hold jobs and contribute to society just as everyone else does. No on freask out about people who drink daily, as if that's just normal and okay. Alcohol is just as much as a drug as MJ is, so it is totally a bogus ass double standard. I can't wait till the fed. decriminalization, as it already is decriminalized in my state. The govt should legalize it and tax it like tobacco and alcohol. Talk about helping close the deficit.

    ReplyDelete
  61. And also, I did try other drugs more than just weed in my teen years. But that was due to rebellion, the area I lived in, and teenage angst. Not cos I smoked weed. I went through my party days phase, and then left it in the past. And for the last decade or so, just smoke my weed, ciggies, and drink my coffee. So really, weed isn't a gateway, I think tobacco more is, cos I know that's what all of us kids got our hands on first. That and the vodka from dad's liquor cabinet, ha!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't care if weed is legal or illegal. My concern is how it turns you into a slug. I told my kids, "I don't care about the morality issue with weed, I care that it takes you straight to Loserville." Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  63. My view has evolved over the yrs. Is MJ a gateway drug? Absolutely. For those who are determined to cross that gateway, come hell or high-water. Someone who is out to get high any & all ways possible will almost certainly begin with alcohol & MJ.

But it is not a given that all MJ smokers WILL go on to harder drugs. It's more the person & how long & much they want to party that's the deciding factor, along with the amount of self-destructive tendencies they have. Many only use MJ, and do so very responsibly. I have no issue with that.

    ReplyDelete
  64. @cece "Takes you straight to loserville". You must have met the wrong kind of pot smokers.

  65. Pot is the same as alcohol. If you drink with your kids, don't judge someone who smokes with theirs.

When it finally becomes legal, this will be a non-issue.

    ReplyDelete
  66. And I mean, when they are adults, I would never condone drinking or smoking pot with a minor.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I feel the need to comment. Mainly to share with the people who don't smoke. First lemmie say I don't have any kids. I have ideas of what I would do,but they're just that.
I tried weed when I was 15 at a friend's house around the same age as me. Some in the group were even younger and already weed smokers. I will be 35 in two months. Smoked on & off with the longest break being 6 months.
Like to smoke once or twice a week. It helps me stress less and puts things into prespective. It helps calm my mind if I can't stop thinking. I've had spiritual realizations while high and some good general ideas too. Still good ideas after high, I wrote them down.
I do know somepeople addicted to weed smoke multiple times a day, everyday, but they all have steady jobs and hurt no one. Weedheads are homebodies.
Weed has never been a gateway for me tried coke once after years of it being offered, randomly. Didn't like it. Worried about the effects.
If I had a child I would want him/her to try weed with me. Some people feel paranoid or feel like their heart is racing and uncomfortable. I would want my child to be in a safe environment. I would raise my child to be open-minded and if weed comes their way I assume they would try it even if they knew nothing of me smoking.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The #1 predictor of future hard drug use is cigarette smoking (and no, I'm not saying smoker = drug user).

Taking illegality out of the equation, I don't see smoking pot with an adult child as any different than drinking alcohol.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Many parents smoke cigarettes with their adult children. I find that far worse than occasionally smoking weed with them. As long as all are adults, and responsible (not driving, no kids around)when smoking, I don't see the issue.

  70. SueRH- I don't drink, don't do other drugs, once a summer maaaybe I will take mushrooms. I didn't smoke pot until I was 18. I come from a family of alcoholics. Just a brief summary. I have never done anything harder then ectasy one time and one time only, never again.
