1988-1989 graduating year. Faith by George Michael and Every Rose Has It's Thorne by Poison. There are soooo many from that year though, I could go on and on.

Class of 84, and I don't remember. I went to a private Catholic high school with 135 in my senior class. I was listening to Duran Duran, The Police, and Spandau Ballet, but at least half my class was listening to Van Halen and Def Leppard. Music was all over the place back then, it seems. I graduated in '98 but I was such an asshole buzzkill hardcore punk rocker that I never payed close attention to what music my classmates loved. Probably something not good though. I do remember people wanted the theme of our prom to be "We Be Clubbin'" which is an Ice Cube song.
I am much more easygoing and delightful to be around now though, it should be noted.
Class of 1986 - "That's What Friends are For" was most popular. That song still gives me the creeps. My personal fan favorite of that year - "Party All the Time" by Mr. Murphy.

I also remember that "Take a Bow" by Madonna was pretty popular because it come on MTV at 3am when I was making out with my older stepbrother's friend I'd had a crush on since my Freshman year of high school. And yes, I feel very crazy for remembering that but I seriously was nuts about this guys for years. Like certifiably Looney Tunes. I was going to do anything he said and go anywhere he told me - except away. lol Poor Greg.

Ah, memories...

E Gee Be, there was a station out of Toronto (Ontario) that was like a ray of light into an otherwise morass of mediocrity: CFNY, 102.1--The Spirit of Radio (the same one referred to in the Rush song, believe it or not). The artists you mentioned would have been right at home there. If not for CFNY my musical education would be woefully inadequate. The station doesn't exist in the same form anymore. Crying shame.
I swear I pay for my Sirius just for the 1st Wave station...it is just like the old days of "The Quake" here in the Bay Area! Snapdragon, you would love it! And Sunny! How could I forget the dead milkmen (i may have dated a boy just because he played "bitchin camero" in. His. Camero. and the Femmes! Oh and Float On by Modest Mouse ... ohhhhh 2004 was a good music year actually. Black Betty by Spiderbait too I think, Mr Brightside by the Killers, Breathe Me by Sia.
This is when I realize how young some of you are. Mr Brightside feels like "a couple of years ago" to me (and I was not a fan). It's hard to imagine that a person who had that song in high school is a real adult now. I know, time marches on; I'm just shocked from time to time.
Like when a co-worker asked what my favorite outfit as a kid was, and it was a dress I called the pinwheel dress, and then she said hers was a Little Mermaid short and top set. Um, I was in college when Little Mermaid came out. Suddenly she went from being a co-worker to a mere CHILD.

This year's freshmen college class was born AFTER Kurt Cobain died, and after OJ [allegedly] killed his wife. Apartheid was already over and Nelson Madela had been elected president of South Africa. All these things that JUST HAPPENED were before their time. Scary, huh?

E Gee Be, there was a station out of Toronto (Ontario) that was like a ray of light into an otherwise morass of mediocrity: CFNY, 102.1--The Spirit of Radio (the same one referred to in the Rush song, believe it or not). The artists you mentioned would have been right at home there. If not for CFNY my musical education would be woefully inadequate. The station doesn't exist in the same form anymore. Crying shame.

ReplyDeleteAnd Sunny! How could I forget the dead milkmen (i may have dated a boy just because he played "bitchin camero" in. His. Camero. and the Femmes! I lost my voice once making singing along to their first album the entire drive from Nor Cal to LA!
All your band mentions take me back! I first heard the Dead Milkmen in 5th grade. My mom's best friend's daughter was 3-4 years older and played "Bitchin Camero" and taught me Spanish curse words. Oh Catholic school girls...
Delete1983, so the popular songs were prolly by gross Journey or even grosser Loverboy. I was punk and way too cool for everyone and everything. But if I could have picked when to be a teenager, mid 70s would have been my choice. Now that seemed like a party.

Anyway, hi to all you 80's alternative fans. Oh the stories I could tell you! Still into music. In fact, our bar just had Jello Biafra perform almost a week ago. Dead Kennedy's!

ReplyDeleteThis is when I realize how young some of you are. Mr Brightside feels like "a couple of years ago" to me (and I was not a fan). It's hard to imagine that a person who had that song in high school is a real adult now. I know, time marches on; I'm just shocked from time to time.
ReplyDeleteLike when a co-worker asked what my favorite outfit as a kid was, and it was a dress I called the pinwheel dress, and then she said hers was a Little Mermaid short and top set. Um, I was in college when Little Mermaid came out. Suddenly she went from being a co-worker to a mere CHILD.
I'm so old.
(Our school wouldn't allow "Melt with you" because of one specific line. Our senior year [1988-89] homecoming song was "Never tear us apart." I feel like the prom song was a Kenny Loggins thing, but since I didn't go I don't quite remember.)

ReplyDeleteMy history teacher from junior high couldn't believe we needed to be taught about the VietNam war, since it had "JUST HAPPENED." Well, for us, it was history, something that started before we were born and ended about the time we started kindergarten, before we processed information outside of our own worlds.
I get it now.
This year's freshmen college class was born AFTER Kurt Cobain died, and after OJ [allegedly] killed his wife. Apartheid was already over and Nelson Madela had been elected president of South Africa. All these things that JUST HAPPENED were before their time. Scary, huh?
