Steve Wynn Makes Joe Francis $20M Poorer

You know what I like about Steve Wynn? The man is a visionary who changed Las Vegas almost all by himself by buying The Golden Nugget when no one wanted it and making it nice and making downtown Vegas into a place people started to go to instead of avoiding. He then took that money and built Mirage which is what set off Vegas like it is today and then built what seemed like an entire section of the Strip. I also like him because of his art collection and because he fired Paris Hilton's boyfriend after they were caught doing coke and I especially like him because he has made Joe Francis $20M poorer. A jury yesterday awarded $20M to Steve after Joe Francis had publicly claimed that Steve had threatened to kill him and leave his body in the desert. Steve sued him and won. Did I mention that Steve does a really good buffet?

  4. But if you talk to local cabbies, they will tell the truth about him. :)

  5. Joe Francis is a total douche. Steve Winn gets kudos for realizing Vegas but he's an asshole.

  6. I don't feel very good* now about calling JF a scumbag above, I rarely say things like that, but the whole Girls Gone Wild deal... it makes me so mad that it exists.

*yet not bad enough to remove the comment

  7. As a Colts fan, this feels a bit like rooting for the patriots, but GOOD JOB, Steve Wynn.

It takes a douche of the level of Joe Francis to make Wynn the guy to cheer for.

Was Wynn a guy who started the 'family friendly' Vegas era? That was the worst, JMO.

  8. why he is a fucking scumbag, rapist and underage porn peddler.

Him and Tucker Max can DIAF and I'd sit there warming my hands on it.

Here's hoping punitive damages are also awarded to the tune of $60M.

  9. OT but John Mayer and Ms. Perry met last night after midnight and then retired to The Wynn.

  10. Yay for the Golden Nugget! I won $120 playing roulette there a few years ago, I thought I was winning big, lol.

Is it just me or does the lady next to Mr. Wynn resemble Tiger's ex-wife?

  11. Never screw with Steve Wynn, especially since he has ties to the mob......or so I hear.

  12. @alis, do tell us what the cabbies know!

  13. Every time we go to Vegas, we always spend one evening in downtown Vegas. Love the feel of it, we always have a blast.

  14. I don't like either of these guys, but Wynn is donating whatever he gets after lawyers fees to charity, so yay for the jury.

  15. Jamie - that's awesome!

I totally forgot Joe Francis was a thing. It would behoove him to clean up, move to a small town, and start making Adirondack chairs or something - lead a quiet life.

  16. figgy - he's known as a bully. When building a new place he low balls prices on homes and bullies people to sell. One person would not sell and so Wynn built a roller coaster over or next to the house. The cab driver said you never mess with him. But then - it could be just cabbie talk. :)

  17. Own it Em! He's a vile scumbag.

  18. Joe Francis is so gross, and I can't believe Jennifer Aniston was friends with him. But then again she dated John Mayer.

The Wynn casino is interesting, very luxurious of course, but it's also the only casino on the strip that uses natural lighting (actual sunlight) on the gambling floor. Steve Wynn is definitely a Las Vegas visionary.

  19. @curlyhairslacker That's Steve's new wife. She is a divorcee he met on the Riviera while he was still married to Elaine. He and Elaine had been married, divorced and remarried to each other.

The divorce to make way for the new wife was very amicable, he and Elaine are still business partners.

As said above it would be supremely foolish to mess with Steve Wynn.

  21. just being nitpicky....the golden nugget was purchased by tillman fertitta. renovation and expansion occurred after that purchase. not while wynn was an owner.

  22. I have a soft spot for the Golden Nugget. On my one visit to Vegas in 1981, I won $50.00 playing roulette there. I was absolute thrilled!

  23. Oh another reason to love the Wynn! Such a gorgeous hotel, casino and nightclub! If I had money I'd stay there, but for now I'll just party and gamble there! haha

  24. I don't know. Wynn decides to try to buy some class by collecting fine art, then he puts his elbow through one of the Picasso's. But Las Vegas has always been a place where Trenton, NJ Italians can spend huge amounts of money the way they imagine real rich people spend money but getting all the details horribly wrong. Gaudy cheesiness raised to the 100th power.

  25. @lazyday603, it is gaudy and cheesy, but the visitors love it. We locals don't go to The Strip unless some out of town visitor drags us there.

  26. If feel bad for Joe, but it's dirty money. Boob money.

  27. The French Riviera may be classier, but Las Vegas is WAY more fun. Did you know there is place where you can just jump around on trampolines all day? Who needs class when you can bounce around a padded room filled with TRAMPOLINES!

  28. I'm not saying it's bad. It is what it is (and I'm heading there Friday to see UNLV vs Washington State followed by Silversun Pickups at the Hard Rock). But it sure as Hell isn't Greenwich, CT or the Mayfair section of London.

  29. @g. strathmore... WHERE?!?!! WHERE?!?!! i literally said "weeeee!!!!" just after reading that... Thank god my door was closed. :D

  30. I think it's called Sky Zone. It's off the strip. I think you have to drive down Tropicana Ave to get there. But it's sooo fun.

  31. Yeah, I've always been kinda on the fence about Wynn - but this makes me almost like him.

That man does put on a mean buffet though. True story - my husband & I were flying to LA for a vacation and wanted to take a side trip to Vegas (we were married there almost 9 years ago and used to vacation there every year before we had kids). We then realized that it was going to cost us $1500 and we were pretty much just doing it for the Wynn buffet. We ended up canceling our side trip :-P

  32. You're right Enty... the Wynn buffet is totally the best in Vegas. I'm hungry now...

  33. Vegas is a blast. Admittedly, it's not Paris or Rome but it's Vegas. It's a blast. The people watching, gambling, booze, shopping, everything is great. It's not a cultural mecca but it's fun.

We stayed at the Bellagio in April for a week. Slid the girl at front desk $120 and ask for a complimentary upgrade. We ended up in a large corner room with a million dollar view of the fountains. Best $120 spent (that didn't go on my feet).

Although if I lived in Nevada, I would hate it too.

  34. Is the character James Caan plays on that TV show Las Vegas based on this guy? He even looks like him.

  35. Enty, he built the Bellagio !! The Fountains !!!
