Your Turn

The other day I was adding up all the times I have moved in my life and it was way more than I had expected. How many times have you moved? How many different jobs have you had in your life?

Lots of cities, lots of moves .. I'm moving into a new house in two weeks.. Oy vay! I hate the moving process.

  2. I tried to count it up - I think fifteen moves?

Too tired to count the jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 29 moves in 34 years... At least this number tops the other one :-S

    ReplyDelete
  4. Moved 15 times. Just completed another one.

(I was always jealous that when we finally moved to a place where we stayed for 8 years, all of my classmates knew each other since kindergarten, whereas I went through 6 elementary schools before I met any of them.)

The life of a military brat.

    Had about 7 jobs.

  5. 4 different cities, about 15 apartments/houses, jobs probably around 15 also.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I've lived in 12 places, all but 1 in the same city. Can't keep track of the jobs (including part-time). I worked in one place that changed ownership twice - does that count as one job, or three?

  7. moved city nine times, moved within the city a few more times.

Off topic, the text on this site moves to the side of my screen about every third window. Anyone else have that problem?

  8. I just moved to Denver from another city, I love it here, but I need to meet friends lol. Any tips hahaha? I'm shy at first, and get nervous about approaching people

  9. So many states, so many moves. Since graduating college I've had eight jobs. I've lived in nine states and moved ten times. Sigh. I have become an expert packer and my mom is a speed demon when it comes to hanging curtains.

  10. 4 times. All in Texas. Spending my freshman year of college home which totally sucks. I can't wait to move away from home, but being alive is so expensive!

  11. Too many
    Too many

The thought of moving..... No. Just. No

    ReplyDelete
  12. I moved so many times my college years, that once I found my apt where I could afford to live alone, I stayed. It has been 18 years that I have lived in the same place!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Three different cities. A dozen different houses.
    10 or more jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I used to be able to say that the most time I ever lived in one place was 6 years, from birth to 6 years, when my family moved.

22 times, which I think averages about one move every 2.5 years or so...? not good on math, but sounds right! Sometimes it was just within one city. For instance, I moved twice in the last year (unintentionally...moved in with a friend selling her house to save money and she unexpectedly got a cash offer two weeks after I moved in!!!! UGH!)

  15. 13ish moves, 8 jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  16. About a dozen times while living in Seattle. Since moving to San Diego, only twice.

Way too many jobs to count through 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I moved a couple of times when I was younger and during marriages, but not really that many times. I've been in the same house now for 25 years and have had the same job for 20 years. I'm not wild about change.

Moving means cleaning and I really don't want to go there.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 26 moves from birth to present, most of them in my 20's. Buying real estate really slows down the number of moves.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have only moved twice. Once to college and then again to move back home. I am very excited for the next move.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 12 moves including a move to egypt and 10 jobs

    ReplyDelete
  21. 11 cities, spread across 3 countries. I can't count all the moves. I am missing Atlanta alot, though I love Seattle.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Seachica, can't imagine your culture shock: Atlanta to Seattle? Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have moved 26 times in my 29 years. Yikes! I feel like I am a real estate floozy! Should I be lying about this number? That is higher than my sex partner number...

    ReplyDelete
  24. On the upside, I have only had 8 jobs, but I'm still thinking I could qualify for gypsy status if you factor in the move number. I just like change!

From birth but excluding college, thirteen times and I know I'm not finished.

As far as jobs are concerned, I've always worked in the entertainment industry but in many different capacities. Survival is dependent on your ability to evolve.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 17 times in 37 years. 4 countries, 4 cities.

And I'm on my 8th job, searching for number 9!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm seeing a trend here. We are a flighty bunch! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  28. 10 paid jobs, five volunteer positions. Also been primarily a stay-at-home mom for 12 years. From birth until now, 14 moves in seven different cities, I believe. After we married, seven moves in eight years!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Six addresses in four cities in 58.5 years ... if you count "self" as an employer, I've only had three jobs (if you don't, only two; been self-employed since 1989).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Moved 11 times; have had 19 jobs

    ReplyDelete
  31. 6 moves, 9 jobs in 40 years. Yeah, I'm a slug. After the last move (from Georgia to West Palm Beach) I pray to God I die in this house. I don't every want to move again (it helps that I really love this house).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Umm 5 states and I've moved about 20 twenty times I'm currently looking for a new apt now. And I think over the years I have had about 30 jobs ...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thirteen moves from birth to present, I tend to stick in one place, my folks not so much.

Only two jobs, the last one became a career.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Born in one town. Moved to another at age five. Moved again to do my training. Moved a fourth time at 21 after meeting hubby. And still in the same bungalow sixteen years later. Have had three jobs. First one as a health care support worker. Second to do nurse training. Third in the first job after training. And this post for several years, in a department. I’ve never liked being far from family and I hate painting and decorating. Otherwise I’d move more often.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 10 moves in 9 countries.. oy vey!

    ReplyDelete
  36. In my 30 years, I have moved at least 17 times that I can recall. I have had 4 paying jobs up until 7 years ago when I started being a SAHM. I have babysat for a few diffrent people but I will NEVER do that again. With the exception of 1 person who worked at the Sheriff's office with my hubby, they have all screwed me over. Those were some of the most stressful times of my life.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I stopped counting at 15. Lots of different states, cities and countries. But I've been where I am now the longest. Over ten years.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 27 times. Didn't think it would be that many before I counted. Now we need to add up time away from home on business trips.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 13 houses in 6 cities, including one move from the UK to the US. Quite a lot considering I lived in one place from 2-21 and I'm 33 now.

Not sure on jobs, I've had lots of different roles where there hasn't been an official role change. I think that's quite common outside of traditional professions such as accounting.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I lived in one house with my parents until I graduated high school at 16. In the 36 (eeeek!) years since then, I've moved well over 40 times. Part of it was school, b/c you automatically move twice a year but to be honest, I like to move. It makes you throw out stuff. If I lived in the same space for 25 years, I wouldn't be able to get in the door.

It doesn't get easier as you get older. I have a wall full of book shelves and never used to have problems putting them back on the shelves. Last move, it really killed my back.

By coincidence, I am closing on a condo on Friday and once it's renovated, I intend that to be my last move until they haul me off to the old folks' home. (I know, some of you may think I belong there now.)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have moved 24 times (all in the US) and have had at least more than 35 jobs between part time while working a full time to changing to another company in the same career field. I started working at 10 and am now 52 and yeah, I am not making that up. I really enjoy working. None were volunteer or unpaid jobs..I don't like to work for free..Snotty huh?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've had one job, but we travel to Florida for the winter for 4 months, and sometimes I'll go to new York for 2 months. So I don't know if that is called moving or not, because I always go to the same place. As far as actually moving from one home to another, I've done that 4 times I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm 49 and I counted once, and I believe it's like 35 houses/apartments I've lived in.

And if you count all the temping I've done when I was in school, I've worked in maybe 40 offices. Number of real jobs? Maybe 15. And that's with several years taken out for a PhD.

I used to say I lived my life like a sock in the dryer. Now that I'm married to Mr. Stability (who's lived in 3 places in his life, one job before starting his own business 28 years ago) for the past 2 years and work with him, I don't plan to ever move or have another job again!

I stopped counting around 24... because it got too depressing. I'm not even 30 yet!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I've lived in six different houses or apartments in my life, five of them within ten minutes of each other. I hate the Midwest, so I hope to move West once I'm done with my master's.

I've had eight different jobs, two of them for the same school but on different campuses.

I'm almost forty, so I think my job and living situations either show stability or monotony. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've lived in 20 different places over the years, starting w/my childhood home (parents are still there), 4 different dorm rooms & 2 summer apartments in college, several places the 1st time I was in the Boston area, 2 apartments & 2 houses in Athens, GA, and then back to MA again; have been in the same place for almost 11 years now, which is the longest I've been anywhere since I started college. Wouldn't mind finding a better place, but money's an issue, alas...

As for jobs: 8 full-time jobs since college, as well as more temp jobs than I could possibly remember. I spent 8.5 years at my last job; here's hoping this new one turns out to be a good long-term position.

(Someday I need to tell the whole U-Hell story of my move from GA to MA over Labor Day weekend 1997--it's quite the tale, believe me.)

  48. I have moved 32 times in my 36 years of life. I've lived in 9 states and 19 cities, and I'm not even counting month long hotel stays in between a few of the homes. I know I'll move again (I'm planning for it now, this time to DC), but I'm hoping it will be one of the last times. There is a part of me that would like to find a place to really call home.

  49. Moved 4 times, but don't plan to move from where I am now.
    Jobs:
Pathology Technician - hospital, private pathology, blood bank
    Admin - Business Coaching company
    Tourism - visitor centre
Admin - church office, carpet store
7 jobs in total, will probably change again in the future.

  50. Counting would only throw me into PTSD!

    ReplyDelete
  51. 13 moves, 6 cities in 40 years, so far. And in November to a new city and state. The biggest adjustment was from south Jersey/ Philly area where I grew up to Seattle. I cried about being homesick so much my first 2 years. I'm still much more east coast than west although I currently live in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've moved 4 times, all in the same state. I'm boring but I love my town and I don't wanna leave! Ever again! I've had 5 jobs and I've been at my current job 5 years.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 29 times, 3 countries, 2 continents.
And looking forward to leave my current place (Paris is nice to visit but not nice to live)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Lived in London, then Moscow, London, Edmonton, Vancouver, London, Monaco and now looking to move to
Dubai if I find a job.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anonymous5:29 PM

I'm 26 and have lived in 37 different houses/apts. And that's including the 4 years I spent in one house and the 3 I've been in my current apt. Three different states.

    ReplyDelete
  56. gosh..since I saw the post I have been trying to remember..26 moves in 30 years. Five major cities in three countries..jobs..let's just say in the past 30 years, life has been an adventure.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 10 moves in 4 cities (9 of them in the span of 10 years).

13 different companies worked for, not counting freelance work and failed business ventures.

It's been 11 months since the last move, and I find myself looking at job postings on the other side of the country, but we promised the kids we'd stay put this time.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I've moved 17-18 times, and if I count teenage jobs to now, about 10 jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  59. 12 moves. Jobs, as in I received a paycheck from a non-relative? Damn, I've had 23, not including self employment. I worked 2 jobs for nearly all of my 20s, so that adds up.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have moved once or twice a year for the past six years.. working/living in student housing for awhile has its downfalls. =P This is the first summer I'm not moving, yaayyyyy!

    ReplyDelete
  61. 16 moves in 38 years, 14 of them after graduating HS. 14 jobs, 10 of them before I graduated college. I recently moved within the same city and I'm still recovering from the horror :(

    ReplyDelete
  62. Two times a year (but the same towns) til I was 18 b/c of Dad's job. Five times in college. Six times since then. Eight cities/towns, five states. Since I was 15, twelve jobs. Moving is the worst!
