Your Turn

Madonna is 54 years young today. So, in honor of her birthday, you can say what your favorite Madonna song is or your favorite Madonna moment or if you have seen her in concert or you can just say why you do or don't like her. It is all Madonna today.

  1. i detest her. how about that?

  2. Favorite Song-Holiday
    Favorite concert-Blonde Ambition tour
Hmmmm I amd torn about her, I think she made it as far as she did because she's a White woman, Grace Jones and other notable women of color were doing what she was doing and better than her before her and did not get the recognition they deserved.

Also I hated the fact that she was notorious for stealing underground culture and making it as if she invented it.

    1. She totally just took what she saw in the gay new York night club scene and exploited it for mass consumption

  3. Madonna is not my fav, but I will always love Desperately Seeking Susan. Always.

  4. Not a fan, in fact I dislike her - but I do like some of her music. My favorite song of hers is "This Used To Be My Playground"

    ReplyDelete
  5. She might be 54, but parts of her are much younger! Loved her in the 80s, but she jumped the shark when she suddenly became British. And her obvious jealousy of Gaga is pitiful.

  6. Like a Prayer will always be my favorite song of hers. I used to slather my mother's lipstick on and use my brush as a microphone and perform to that song on my bed.

Side note, on a Girl Scout trip to Memphis I accidentally let it slip that I liked that song when it came on the radio. The woman driving us to Libertyland said it was evil and she was a devil worshiper because she kissed a black guy in the video.

  7. Oh, you kids these days...Madonna is awesome and always will be. It's her material world and we're all just living in it.

  8. LOVED her in the eighties and mid-nineties. True Blue, Like a Virgin, Erotica = all the best stuff.

@LadyLagerfeld, ITA. That seems to be about the time she started making crappy music. And now she just seems extremely bitchy and so freakin aggressive in her pursuit of youth. Relax, lady!

@Cecilia00 I had forgotten about that song! One of the good ones, for sure.

  9. My cousin and I worshipped her, back in the Holiday/Like a Virgin early years. Lots of good times listening to Madonna, for sure. I also (shame to follow here) liked her in Evita. I thought she was born to play that role. Feel free to throw something at me!

I completely lost track of her after that, though. Although I thought she was damn respectable at the Superbowl last year. More secret shame :-).

  10. Generally I never liked her but years after she became famous "Get into the Groove" dug its way into my subconscious & has never really left. That's a really catchy tune. And she was in the movies "Vision Quest" and "Desperately Seeking Susan" both of which I love, so prop points to her for that. I don't like her trying to take Granny Nudity mainstream. That stuff belongs behind closed doors. Grandpa nudity too.

  11. Oh man, Jesse, I watched the MTV True Blue video marathon - it was hours and hours of homemade videos people sent in! The friend's house I was at was so boring that we watched for like five hours straight. I'm still pretty done with that song as a result.

  12. Take A Bow is my favorite song of hers.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Live to Tell" is a great song. I liked her during her "Rain" years...the cropped 'do was the rage in the 90's. And "Ray of Light"...can't believe that's a cover song.

She's one of the many, many artists I feel conflicted about. I like/hate her. There's just so many celebs that you want to think they're good people, but then you hear about their entitlement, terrible behavior, etc. and it makes it difficult to support them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Can't stand her as a person. I can't think offhand of a song of hers that I really really like, although I kind of like some of her music. I did like her in League of Their Own (favorite baseball movie) and Evita (saw the play 3X before I saw the movie). So yeah, shoot me too. Evita is where I found out how sexy Antonio Banderas is.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What it feels like for a girl, great song.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Take a Bow.
I liked "truth or dare" too. I thought she revealed the extent of her narcissism.... ok, maybe not the EXTENT :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was a HUGE Madonna fan in my early teens! Everything she released up to and including "Like A Prayer" was my favourite. And "Desperately Seeking Susan", as I have a feeling I have stated on here before, is a movie I watch several times a year.

It's too bad she turned into what she is today - she could have stayed cool, she chose not to.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Susan - Antonio was great in Evita. Reminds me, though - went to see Evita with my mom, who is an avid fan of musicals and Broadway, and a smart person. But I had to inform her about half way through that Che was the narrator and not a real person. She was very confused :-).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ok, and OT, but has anyone seen Ricky Martin as Che in this latest Evita on Broadway? I think he would be beyond dreamy in that role. Loves me some Ricky, baby!

  20. I always dance about when I hear Papa Don’t Preach. I can’t stand the woman. She was on the Graham Norton Show a few months ago and she was a cold, unemotional person. An audience member had made a doll of her and it was wearing an outfit which was identical to what she wore to the USA premiere of the Wallace Simpson film. She didn’t even thank the man. In fact, she was quite rude and obnoxious. You could sense that Graham Norton was rather uncomfortable. Horrible woman.

  21. I will never forget the very first time I saw her video for Borderline and how I was amazed at how much fun she seemed to be having. Before that, it seemed like only the boys could be fun in videos. I personally will always love Dress You Up. I know the song is kind of cheesy and all that, but under the surface I think it is really about women being sexually confident and in control.

    ReplyDelete
  22. As much as I dislike her current stage antics and attitude, I surprise myself when it comes to picking out a fave song. Holiday, Express Yourself, Vogue, Frozen, Rain, Ray of Light, Take a Bow, Jump, Time Goes By and Beautiful Stranger. Also, Open Your Heart.

I'm surprised because there are several. But that's the thing about Madonna, she is irritating and annoying, yet somehow she worms her way in. Just wish she'd stop flashing her nude bits at us.

    ReplyDelete
  23. live to tell, take a bow...and any times she shows her tits.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Love that she looks so good at her age. Love that she stands up for the LGBT community. Never cared for her music. She is her generations Cher.

Also love Grace Jones but she could never be compared to Madonna. That would be like comparing classical music to gangster rap.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was a huge fan when I was little with Like A Virgin, and then again when I was a teen with The Blonde Ambition Tour. We watched that docu over and over and over.
I also love This Used To Be My Playground and Ray of Light. I can't say just one because I was into all those eras.
Don't care for her now though.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Loved the mermaid video ..True Blue I think..

    ReplyDelete
  27. "Take A Bow" is my favorite but Madonna does not seem like a very nice person so while I don't loathe her I don't care for her either.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous10:28 AM

I tend to like/dislike people because of the way their eyes look.

Her eyes have always looked like she is bitchy and dead inside.

    So I don't like her.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ugh. The only Madonna song I like is "What it Feels Like for a Girl."

When I was studying abroad in college, the international student house we lived in - which housed students from over 135 different countries- also had a bar w/ karaoke (and the cheapest beers in London). "Like a Prayer" was sung at least 15 times a night. I FUCKING HATE THAT SONG NOW.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was in university when Madonna released her first album. I wasn't a fan, she appealed to my younger sister and her friends - I thought it was cute when they danced around the house wearing my mom's lacy bras over their t-shirts singing like a virgin -

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hands down my favorite Madonna song is "Borderline"

I can't help it, I love Madonna! Loved the Blond Ambition tour as well.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Crazy for You and Get into the Groove. Can't stand the new stuff she's putting out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have always been a fan of hers...but I really wish she would stop trying to "act" so young, it gets on my nerves.

I like her newer stuff on...from Ray of light and a single from Hard Candy "Miles Away"...that song makes a lot of sense about a love/hate relationship with your significant other.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wasn't into her earlier stuff but I really dug Ray of Light. I can't stand her now though.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was a rabid-Madonna fan in 80s and 90s. Best album (to me) was Ray of Light though my other 2 favorites is Justify My Love (what a hot video) and Bad Girl.

I was into the underground club scene in the 90s and voguing was so popular. It did bother me that so many people attributed her to creating voguing.

I just dislike what she has become but I cant hate on a woman that wont age gracefully. I believe she is having a hard time with it (as I hope I wont when i get into my 50s).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Madonna and I are the same age.

I think I have a son the age of her *boy*friend. Yuck.

I was never a big fan but there were a few songs I liked.

    I adore hydrangeas.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Liked her in the early years but now not so much. "Like a Virgin" is my favorite, probably not so much for the song, but the video also.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I liked the song Borderline, but Madonna herself has never appealed to me,. I always had the thought that she was way more trouble than she was worth.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Borderline. Only Madonma song I love.

I coveted her hair in the Borderline video. If I thought I could make my hair look like that, I still would totally rock that look, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  40. mikey said...

    I adore hydrangeas.

    LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I always thought her music was blah pop music and I could understand her need to reinvent herself every few years to stay relevant. I find her amusing now with her newly-acquired British accent and her pathetic try-hard neediness to appear young and hip.

I soooo wish I could present her with a big ole bouquet of hydrangeas. I guess I'd call it the "Bitch Bouquet."

    ReplyDelete
  42. Crazy for you, Live to Tell, Playground, Borderline, Like a Prayer, Ray of Light are my faves.

Not crazy for her (pun) now, but in the 80's she was great.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ray of light. No contest.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like her songs after Frozen and before disco stuff: Frozen, Don't tell me, Beautiful Stranger, the Power of Good Bye. Also older songs like Take a Bow, Rain, Secret

    ReplyDelete
  45. I used to enjoy La Isla Bonita-(sp?)- it was a different type of song for Madonna- now I despise her and wish she would take her act home and put it to rest.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've got Causing a Commotion on my Mp3 player. I've seen Desperately Seeking Susan, Truth or Dare, I tried to watch Evita, and I will never forget her rolling around on the stage singing Like a Virgin at the MTV awards (or was it Grammys?) I used to look forward to her videos.

She was a hot stuff back in the day.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Like A Prayer-favorite!

    Take A Bow-2nd fave

I hate it that she's so narcissistic & uppity, absolutely loved her when I was in 4th grade and Like A Vigin came out. That was 1984, right?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Like some of her mid-aughts work - "Sorry", "Hang Up", "Give it 2 Me" - as well as "Ray of Light" and "Don't Stop."

But I wish she'd put on some clothes, now.

Also think she's got a lifelong schtick of doing intentionally shocking things, and then pretending to be hurt when people are upset by them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. la isla bonita/who's that girl?/express yourself/vogue/like a virgin
because they're classic pop songs now

    ReplyDelete
  50. I really liked her way back in the '80's. 'Desperately Seeking Susan' was one of my favorite movies. I remember seeing her in the 'Burning Up' video and she definitely had charisma. (Axl Rose was another one who had 'It' back then).

I consistently liked her stuff up through '87. 'La Isla Bonita' was my favorite song. After 'Truth or Dare', she became increasingly tiresome (to me, anyway). I've only liked a few things she's done after that ('Evita', 'Ray of Light').

    ReplyDelete
  51. I had tickets to see her in LA on Sept. 11, 2001...obviously the show was cancelled but she refused to cancel any others of the 4 or 5 nights in LA...so she tacked this show on the end and it was the last show of her Drowned World tour...the security was very tight, the show started 90 minutes late so everyone could get in, and the stage filled with smoke and she emerged on a treadmill, wearing a kilt made out of the American flag...she was defiant and strong at a moment when everyone was terrified that something else was going to blow up, just 4 or 5 days after 9-11...I will never forget how I felt seeing her, it was oddly comforting.

I think now she has lost her way amid greed and fame and that Kaballah stuff but I love how unapologetic she is...as a woman I appreciate someone giving me permission to be as selfish as a man is encouraged to be.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My favorite Madonna songs will always be Burning Up and Everybody. When she first started out I thought she was so cool. Now I can't stand the bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I lived in New York when she was just starting and remember very well the first wave of publicity about her, when she was playing at Danceteria, Paradise Garage and what not. I wasn't into that scene, but in retrospect I do wish I'd gone to see her then. I certainly never expected her to last. Later I got to like her, but now she's just a bore and should retire.

My favorite Madonna moments are her video for "Material Girl" and her performance of "Vogue" at the 1990 VMAs.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I saw her when I was in college at the 1985 Like A Virgin tour, San Diego State Open Air Theater. Sean Penn was there. I wasn't a Madonna fan, but I was a fag hag, and my main gay invited me and paid for the tickets. We were in the 5th row and had a blast. Oh, a young unknown band called the Beastie Boys opened.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Favorite song - Live to Tell

    ReplyDelete
  56. La Isla Bonita. Had no idea what the song was about in the 80's but it made me so happy back then!

    ReplyDelete
  57. The only one I like is Don't tell Me Love isn't true, it's just something that we do...(obviously I don't know the name), the one where she's in the cowboy getup.

Otherwise, I have zero fucks to give about her.

    ReplyDelete
  58. La isla Bonita and. Like a prayer

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm a big Madonna fan. I can't really choose what song of her is my favorite, but I'll go with every song on the Immaculate Collection. Take a bow,Oh father, You'll see, and Frozen.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anonymous1:19 PM

Use to love Madonna's music, especially Borderline, Holiday, and all the early stuff. She has definitely jumped the shark. Exposing her breast in public? Really, what's that all about? And the whole, I hate hydrangeas thing. Gotta give her props for marketing herself so well tho.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Was I the only person who loved Dick Tracy?!

Madonna was so much more fun in the 80s. Lucky Star, Borderline, La Isla Bonita, who's That Girl, Papa Don't Preach we're all great songs. I think she lost it when she did Erotica. Nowadays, she is a characture of the aging star who can't accept that she is getting older. She could do hip when she was young. Her problem is that she is still trying to do hip while she is AARP eligible.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Not a fan, especially not lately. I wouldn't describe her as cold and emotionless though, just extremely guarded. She was the biggest female pop star around for so long, she has to be protective of herself, or the press would eat her alive.

I love "the secret" and "Dear Jessie".

    ReplyDelete
  63. I've never been a fan of her music.

I think the most interesting thing about her is that, according to this website:

    http://www.iisis.net/index.php?page=theda-bara-madonna-reincarnation-past-life-walter-semkiw-kevin-ryerson-research

-in her previous lifetimes she was both Mata Hari and Theta Bara.

    ReplyDelete
  64. @Tru Leigh: Don't know how she managed that one, because I'm pretty sure both ladies' lives overlapped by a number of years...come on, Madge, pick one & stick with it!

I was going to mention "Holiday" and "Like a Prayer" as 2 of my favorites, but now that people have been reeling off titles, it's reminding me of just how much I've enjoyed a lot of her music. She's not a great artist, mind you, and from the sound of it she's not necessarily a nice person, but she is a damn good performer, and she does have (or at least had) a real knack for picking the next big trend or just starting one herself.

(At some point in the last couple of years, I saw some cotton fabric in a hydrangea print and chuckled to myself; I really should have bought it, as it would have made a great summer dress, not to mention that I'd always have something to throw on if I knew I was going to meet her. *smiles sweetly and evilly)

  65. I wouldn't call it my favourite Madonna moment, but it was a moment.

I went to the original Live Aid concert in 1985 in Philadelphia and went to get pizza during Ashford & Simpson, the act performing before Madonna.

It was a mob scene of a line up, and the guy behind me kept leaning into me and making weird conversation. I thought he was coming on to me. Nope. He was robbing me. I had my purse slung over my shoulder, kind of on my back, and the bastard robbed me.

I finally get to the front of the line for pizza, and thank gawd I had $12 in my hand, because that was all the money that I had. The pizza came to $12 & change, and went I went to get my wallet, I saw that my purse zipper was open, and my wallet was gone :-(

Asshole behind me made such a big deal about it, that I realized then and there who robbed me. Worse yet, I had a flash of the moment he has passed my wallet to his friend... It contained $60. Thank gawd, I always keep my ID separate from my money.

Robber asked me several times how much was in the wallet, and finally I said $290.00. The look of joy in his eyes...

I wasn't going to get the money back, but I knew he would think his partner in crime had double-crossed him, so I went for it.

Someone beside me gave me the change I needed to buy the pizza, and I was seething by the time I got back to my seat. Just as I sat down, my friend announced, "you just missed Madonna..."

  66. Awesome story, Ms. And smart thinking!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I loathe everything about her. Every. Single. Thing.

    ReplyDelete
  68. i lived it when she moved to england and started using the fake british accent. my kids and i still make fun of her for that. "shall we talk like madonna today?" "Yes actually, lets take a little trip across the pond". so freakin STUPID!!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I liked Dick Tracy, but I loved the soundtrack. Wow, did I listen to that one a lot. And This Used to Be My Playground makes me cry at the end of A League of Their Own every damn time. Take a Bow's definitely my fave of her other songs.

I was never a fan, really, despite being the perfect age, but I respected her smarts, almost from the beginning. It was quite clear that she knew what she was doing career-wise in ways that similar artists just didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Like a Prayer ♥

(does she sing this?) "a man can tell a thousand lies I've learned my lesson well, if I live to tell..." ♥

I think she's a rather horrible performer; more a PR stunt. But her brand put out some good stuff (see above), Madonna believed the PR; quite a nut.

    ReplyDelete
  71. my FAVORITES are the Stephen Sondheim songs she sang in Dick Tracy. i still listen to them now.

also loved Ray of Light/Frozen - and when she wore Olivier Theyskens when nobody knew of him!

    Take A Bow, too.

her 80's music is good, don't really know it (too young for the 80's). most of her new stuff is faceless. and she seems really desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  72. When she first came out, I was infatuated with her. Keep in mind I was 5-6yrs old. I dressed up as her for Halloween and would play her tape I got for my b-day over and over again while singing and dancing on the fireplace ledge. I can't believe my mom let me listen to that stuff when I was so young.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I would have to say that "live to tell" would be my favorite vadge song.

But does anyone remember the "dress u up in my love" video when we were kids? Well my friend and I tried to recreate the video (this was like circa beta-max machines), and my friend couldn't not for the life of her get the dance routine down. I guess you had to be there, or in my mind to see the memory ;) It was too funny.

    ReplyDelete

Im on this tiny phone, so I cant gush the way id like. LIVE TO TELL...LIKE A PRAYER...JUSTIFY MY LOVE...GET TOGETHER...and on, and on............:-)

    ReplyDelete
  75. I remember that True Blue day on MTV, too. I was wearing a Member's Only jacket (gold, with yellow and black bee fabric interior) and had a total 80s hairdo. I loved Madonna from the start until about 1999 or so, and -- now, I don't want to hear her much any more.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I was OK with the eighties and early 90's Madonna. I liker her Like A Prayer album. I still think "Oh Father" is a very haunting song. My favorites are "Cherish" and "Get Into the Groove."

Somewhere Madonna lost her sense of humor and fun.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Oh I forgot "Use to be my Playground" and "I'll Remember" are two faves as well, again they were early 90s though.

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Seachica - I wouldn't say I loved "Dick Tracy" but I enjoyed it, and thought the bad reviews it got were mostly undeserved.

@Henriette - "Get Into the Groove" is a terrific song!

  80. Madonna was the only reason I was able to leave my house after 9-11. My friend John & I had tickets for her Drowned World tour at Staples on the 13th. I was at home, staring at the tv, having panic attacks & tried to convince him to go without me. Well god bless John because he came over, got me out of bed, pushed me to get ready & drove us to the show. The minute Madonna came out, the world fell away. In the middle of the show she stopped the music & had everyone come together in prayer. You could hear a pin drop, it was beautiful. She kicked major ass! The best show I've ever seen & I saw Michael! Madonna will always be the queen to me.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Favorite song: Burning Up. I LOVE that song. I still play it, but instead of a Walkman, I have it on my iPod. I only saw her live once, during the Isla Bonita period. I had 26th row at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. My sister and I drove up to the show in her convertible. It was a helluva good time.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I admire and respect her as a tough individual who has made her mark. I believe she has done a lot for society's view of women. Can't say I ever liked her music that much, although erotica and others have their place, but she sure has been and continues to be a force of nature worthy of respect.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love Madonna for her music and for all of her contributions to pop music. Yes, she steals, begs and borrows, but she always does it with style, and she challenges the age-old taboo that women can't be sexy after they are XX years old. Long live the Queen!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I loved all her earlier music and pretty much everything she did through the 90's. I LOVED A League of Their Own and thought she did a pretty good job in that and even...Evita. :) My favorite songs are/were Cherish, Express Yourself, Take a Bow. As a person? She seems pretty awful. I have to separate the artist from the person in most cases or I wouldn't like anyone involved in music/Hollywood. ;)
