Win Gold Medal In China Before Learning Bad News

Wu Minxia won the gold medal in diving for China. After she won the gold medal she was told by her parents that Wu's grandmother had died a year ago and that Wu's mother has breast cancer. They had been forbidden to tell her either of those things during the last year of her training and were not allowed to reveal it until after the Olympic event. I think that says a lot about how isolated these athletes are from China and how it seems to be the only thing that matters is winning no matter the cost. That should not be what athletics is about. I think one of the greatest parts about sports is seeing people achieve tremendous results while dealing with some kind of personal adversity. Listening to those stories or seeing those interviews are some of the best parts of the Olympics. I don't think anyone is a fan of robots or people or countries who put wins above everything else.
