I think if you were to read a history of everything music. I mean an entire collective of every interview with every artist that has ever gone to Jamaica, they all come back changed. I blame the high quality pot. Google Jamaica and bands and then click on the stories. They all come back and have albums that are totally different than anything else they have ever done and have experienced a spiritual awakening. Well, Snoop Dogg had the same enlightenment and made a reggae album and a book and has changed his name to Snoop Lion. There is no symbol, and he is not going to be like Sean Combs and change it every week. I'm not sure how long Snoop Lion will last but for this record at least, it is here. I'm sure it sounded good to him at 4 a.m. after four days of being constantly high, but, there is no zip to it. Maybe a S. Lion. Maybe just Lion. Oh, the Tin Man. Or just go ahead and go for the Wizard Of Dogg. Wizard Of Snoop? Much better choices.
It's not really the quality of pot in Jamaica, it's the quantity of pot in Jamaica.

ReplyDeleteI used to work for Island Records back in the early 80s, which was located in the Newsweek building, very stuffy. We were in the Penthouse. Reggae artists were coming and going all the time. They'd leave and since it was the Penthouse they hogged the elevator the whole way down, and when they got down to the lobby, billows of smoke would waft out, it was like a cartoon! Oh the looks on the stuffed suits waiting for the elevator!
ReplyDeleteSorry Disco I have to slightly disagree. It was BOTH quantity and quality. It was more of a slow motion, whole body high that lasted forever. And for $70 I had so much of it left after 12 days there we had to flush it before we left for the airport. We were not dumb either we just smoked in the room. But when we went outside the resort we saw locals lighting up all over. At open air restaurants and in front of their kids. Jamaica was a wonder place. I got to feed hummingbirds out of my hand! In the rain forest!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds fucking amazing! My boyfriend was watering the yard yesterday and a hummingbird drank water from the hose for a good 3 minutes. It was so cute! I was shocked when both of my dobermans stayed laying down with me while he and the hummingbird danced with the hose. :)

ReplyDeleteI was raised in a stuffy, rather strict religion. One day I was listening to Bob Marley and had a weird experience (no pot was involved). I didn't understand what happened until years later, but completely "get" the Jamaica/Reggae/awakening thing.
I like Snoop Lion. It makes me giggle.

I have zero desire to go to Jamaica for an extended period of time. I've stopped there on cruises. Day and night stoners in college annoyed me, so I can only imagine the irritation I would feel being surrounded by an entire island of people who are high 24/7. Unless this is just a stereotype and it's not true.
MadLyb, I used to call Bob Marley's music "musical marijuana" because of the calming effect it had on my kids when they were small. It was awesome for car trips.

I think he got pretty blissed out on a half-kilo of Maui Wowie in his house one afternoon, while watching Chronicles of Narnia. And suddenly found himself talking to a giant Aslan sitting in the barcalounger one over, and encouraged him to switch the species of his moniker.

DeleteJamaica is life transforming. And I didn't even smoke when I was there. There's a lot of ganja but mostly smoked by tourists. Jamaicans very hardworking lovely people. And I've both taken cruises to places and traveled other ways and there's NO comparison. You do not get the feel and vibe of a country/place by stopping by on a cruise. When a cruise ship is in port in a Caribbean or Mexican town, the entire vibe of the place shifts. I try to avoid port places for this very reason. Traveled on a cruise to Bermuda once and really regret it because it's confining/constricting and you don't get the feel for the area.

@rejectedcarebear the ganja situation is hard 2explain, u can get it easily,but most smoke in private, but @ reggae concerts people do it in public. people found with large quantities r arrested as they r normally trying 2 export it.
I think the main reason cannabis use is tolerated even though illegal there is because of the Rastafari Movement.

ReplyDeleteI loved Jamaica and although we didn't venture outside our resort very much, from what we saw, the only people smoking were the tourists.
