Skimpymist, your "equivalent to putting grandparents to sleep" quote kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Letting go of a suffering animal isn't the same as killing your elderly grandparents.

If the animal still has a decent quality of life and there are treatments that are helping him, then by all means he deserves to live out his life.

But if the animal is in constant pain and there isn't anything that can be done, putting him to sleep is the best, most loving thing to do. I've had to do it for animals I love just as much as other people love their kids. It is horrible and traumatic, but letting an animal suffer because you don't want to say goodbye is cruel.

If this animal's pain is being controlled (didn't read the article, would cry too much), then by all means the guy needs to keep doing what he's doing. But if it gets to the point where the arthritis pain can't be controlled anymore (like with our much-loved 14 year-old husky and wolf mix we had when I was growing up), the most loving thing to do would be to let him run across the rainbow bridge.

I had a beloved pet, a snowshoe cat, for 13 years when she was diagnosed with diabetes.
We tried insulin injections and various other treatments, but poor kitty was suffering horribly.
It was time. It was heart breaking. still miss her.
However, this man's situation may be totally different so I can't judge his decision. But I can tell he loves that puppers.

  41. The dog is 19. That's a good life. You know qhen the animal is ready. It looks at you to tell you it's in pain and ready. If it could it would run off and die somewhere. Google it.

  42. Is it just me, or does Kristen look a lot like her mom? I swear they even hold their cigarettes the same way...And is the older man behind Mom Kristen's dad, her stepfather, or someone else entirely?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes, animals will let you know when it's time; you just have to be willing to listen to them. If they still seem to be enjoying life otherwise, though, it's worth it to try to alleviate their pain as much as possible, which is what I'm guessing is the case here. That dog certainly looks happy to be with his dad, that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  44. BTW. I'm sorry if i offended any body. It wasn't my intention. If you truly love your pet, know when it's time to let go. I didn't say it was going to be easy.

I hate when people ask me if I'm a dog person or a cat person. I have cats, because I'm not a fan of having a dog in the city (prefer for them to have land to run on). But I love both. I love all animals.

    1. Dia- you're involved in acupuncture correct? I was thinking about trying it out for my chronic sinus infections and anxiety. Do you think it will help? I'm done with taking medicines that only provide a temporary solution.

    2. Carebear! Do it! One of my favorite success stories is a lady with a ten yr history of sinusitis. We had two months to clear things up before her scheduled surgery. She couldn't breathe through her nose and her eyes constantly watered.

By the time treatment we were done she did not need surgery. Nostrils worked again. Eyes no longer drippy. No more vertigo from phlegmy head.

I strongly recommend acupuncture for sinusitis. It really works and usually works pretty quickly. Your practitioner may also recommend herbs as well.

Dia knows this, but I am a firm believer in acupuncture. I have gone for knee pain and neck pain, and both times I had success. As far as the anxiety, maybe Dia can elaborate, but I have some tips I've posted that have helped with my mild anxiety. I saw a homeopathic integrative MD that really gave me some great info and it's REALLY rare for me to get symptoms these days. When I do get them, they quickly subside. I would happy to repost if you'd like, Care Bear :)

    4. @sunny - I would be interested in that advice too. Please repost!

@carebear - I wish I could give you names of good people in your area. Ask around and see if you can get a recommendation. I feel like its important to see someone you like and trust, as well as qualified. At least in my practice, that bond is really important.

    5. Oops - carebear, one last thing. Acu does help anxiety too. I can't give you specifics without asking personal questions, so hope you can trust me on this one. Generally, it will help relax you, reset your inner clock, and helps turn on the rest/digest part of your brain allowing you to calm down. Sometimes we have to teach the body how to relax after long periods of chronic stress. Treatments have a cumulative effect where each one builds on the last so you go deeper into relax-o mood and faster each time. Acu also helps with PTSD and is often used on returning vets.

  65. Haven't read the comments, just want to give a tribute to one of the most noble people I've ever known (regarding the pup). She was a boss of mine and to this day is the most noble person I know. She used to go to the shelter and say 'give me the most unadoptable dog you have'. At any given time she had at least 7. One was born to a momma dog that had been kicked and beaten. He was a dalmation and he was the only one in the litter who lived. He also had paralyzed legs, so the vet said. He couldn't even crawl. She took him to the river every single day for an hour before work and massaged his legs and just kept at it. After a year he was running around in her back yard like nobody's business.
Animals are such a blessing in our lives. Giving back is the least we can do.

  69. I live in the area where the photo of the guy and his dog was taken. What you all might not realize is that winter dogs don't typically like the water, in fact, they're afraid of it. They like snow. But this one apparently trusted his person so much that he went in. Everyone in Northern Minnesota/Wisconsin has been bawling about this shot for days now, not only because the man stands there and holds the dog while the dog drifts off to sleep, but because the dog went into the water in the first place. Trust, love... the whole nine yards.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The man with the dog is single. If a man shows love for animals, he's a good one. I hope the right woman reads the article and finds him.

My parents chose to exclude me from having any say in their medical directives because my mom says I was "too compassionate" with my cats at their end of lives. I was willing to give my sick cat daily IV shots to keep him hydrated, and drain his pleural effusion at the vet office so he could breathe. The other cat, I kept running medical tests to figure out what was wrong, which they never found, and it was breaking my heart that she was dying without my being able to figure it out or do anything about it. (It still does.) When she had a stroke and her liver shut down and her skin turned yellow (all in a few hours) I took her to the emergency vet and sat with her all night (well, nine and a half hours, it turned out to be) while they gave her hourly pain shots. I was not prolonging her life at that point with any more treatments, but I also would not be the one to kill her. Animals have been dying without our help forever. But I had to keep her out of pain. My mother, who wants no intervention of any kind, has made sure I will have no role in her medical care, because I would probably try to save her too. I did have input for my husband's father, and he is alive (and better) today because of my decisions while he was on life support.

  80. That "If it could it would run off and die somewhere" comment hit home for me. My beloved Golden Retriever, my childhood best friend, did this. She wandered off one day ... my mom looked everywhere for her until someone called ... he found her dead on his large stretch of land, on the shore of a pond. My mom thought she had dementia and couldn't find her way home but I *knew* she had run off to die so we wouldn't have to deal with it. God I'm crying right now as I type this.

Having animals is such a beautiful thing but they live such short lives and it's so hard to let go.

    ReplyDelete
  81. My dog has advanced arthritis, and the dog version of MS, which means she has trouble keeping her feet pointed the right way - they tend to curl under when she walks. She falls, has trouble walking, scrapes her feet, and has to have pain pills every few hours. But she is still ecstatic every time I walk through the door, or pick up the leash, or give her food or treats. I know I'll have to put her to sleep very soon, but as other people said, your pet will tell you when it's time to go. Just because a dog has pain, it doesn't mean it's time for them to go yet. And conversely, if a human member of my family were in so much pain that they didn't have any pleasure in their life any more, I'd support their decision if they wanted to end their life, and I know they'd do the same for me. I don't think you can judge the situation from afar.

TMI alert: My anxiety tends to pop up around lady time. I think I've had mild underlying anxiety for a long time, but since I was traveling and partying I was completely distracted from it for years. It finally came to a head after some traumatic events last year, and that's what caused me to look for some answers with this Integrative MD (someone who wasn't going to just prescribe anti-anxiety meds)
    1) Get your blood tested. My anxiety has a lot to do with hormones, and my blood test showed I was low on Progesterone and Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for mood stabilization, so everyone should get sunshine every day and supplement if necessary. I take a 1000IU Vitamin D3 every day. I also was prescribed NATURAL progesterone cream that I apply topically on days 12-26 of my cycle
    2) Get 30-60 minutes of vigorous exercise 4 to 5 times min a week. Good stress reliever and mood elevator (endorphins)
    3) Reduce caffeine intake. I TRY to have just one cup of coffee a day, but lately it's been 2. I switched out my Diet Coke for Hansens natural diet cola. My doc said aspartame is the devil on your system
    4) Take a fish oil supplement, Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc supplement, a multi vitamin (which is great for your necessary B vitamins - B 12 another mood stabilizer) and MOST IMPORTANTLY Evening Primrose Oil softegels. I try to take 3000 mg a day (3 x 1000 mg) because this really helps with PMS
    5) When you feel the heart palpitations, make sure breathe from your abdomen and not your chest. This small thing has really helped me.
    6) Get to the bottom of what's causing your anxiety. I had about 3 things I wasn't dealing with, and just facing this things helped as well
Best of luck to you, my dear pals. Anxiety freaking SUCKS, but it is manageable if you have mild symptoms. I have had the same bottle of Xanax in my closet for about 7 months. It's nice to know it's there, but I prefer not to take them. I'm a granola girl at heart. Please also read this link:

I know you ladies probably have moved on but if you come back to this thread tell me if you have tried it. I have been 50-100mg for about 3 months. I used to get super bitchy, cranky, snappy right before lay time and after. Now, that is minimal. And I sleep a perfect amount every night.

i know you gotta go, but I have to bitch about this: for me to see a homeopathic doctor, I had to pay completely out of pocket for doc and labs even though I have insurance. Paid over $500, but I just had to look at it as an investment in my health. Of course if I went to a normal M.D it would have been $45. As my Mom says, "Don't get me started". Happy weekend to you too :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Guuurl! Do not get me started on this topic. Insurance is the bane of my existence. If the lay person knew how much work goes into getting myself paid, well let's just say I think more people would be open to reforms. One company has messed up my account so badly that I haven't been paid in almost 4 months!!!! Hello!!! I need to eat! There's a good reason many alternative docs don't take insurance. We make more money if we don't AND we have more control over the treatment bc no one is breathing down your next watching what you do.

I tell people it's an investment too. But a lot of people don't have the extra cash for these treatments, even though it will actually save money in the long term.

Sorry Sunny. Now I'm all fired up! Can you tell that I'm a Sagittarius? Hahaha! Nite Nite!

And y'know what's SUPER eerie to me about that? I was on the Queen Mary in June in a very similar costume. I just can't tell if those are spiky epaulets or wings, like mine.

  89. Dia and Sunny- thank you both so so much!! I have chronic sinusitis and its such a drain on my life and my wallet. I'll get a sinus infection and bronchitis 4 times a year (when the seasons change) and I also have indoor and outdoor allergies. I need relief and the doctors I've been too just shove pills at me. I think for my anxiety stems from when I was robbed at gun point while at work. It causes me to spend a lot of time at home. I need something new to try and combat these issues. I also have some digestion issues that I won't go in to but the last time I went I was diagnosed as having IBS because I mostly refused to get any more testing done. I'm slowly changing my diet and testing out some vitamin combos. I will look into all the tips and links you both suggested. I found a practice near my house, its a small one but she has a website that clearly explains everything sshe does and just reading it relaxed me, good sign! Thank you both again!

    1. I am only 25 but a year ago I wad 35 pounds overweight and felt awful! It was hard to get out of bed, walking hurt, my hands hurt, I felt like an arthritic 50 year old. I stopped every bad thing I put into my body and went on the paleo diet. 6 months later I felt great, now 2 years later and I don't follow the diet to a T. But I still feel a lot better and staying away from bread, alcohol (I am allergic I found out) and processed sugars helped me. And as I said up thread. I have axienty issues and 5HTP really helped. I was thinking of going to the doctor for anxiety and depression but once I started taking that I felt much better. Consistence is key with the 5HTP though, miss one day and you are out of wack.

    2. Smash! I feel so much better (and weigh less) when I eat this way. But then the siren call of sugar lures me back and I go crazy!

Thanks for sharing your story too!

    3. Sugar is my main mistress. She is always cruel to me! I can get a sugar hangover if I really binge. Klondike Heath bar sandwiches have been my downfall this summer. I always try to buy the real fruit bars but they never hit my sweet spot like good old chocolate!

  90. Regarding when pets are ready to go, for me it's when they stop eating and drinking. Once they've lost the will to keep going, it's time to let them go. However, as long as they're still finding enjoyment in food, they're still fighting the fight and I'll do what I can to help them.

  91. I have cats and dogs and for me they are another member of the family. But even I know that when my dog or cats quality of life has changed for the worse and has no way of getting better, its time to euthanize and end the misery. Its not fair to the animal to keep it alive just because its human counterpart can't deal with losing the pet.

  92. Sunny and Dia Papaya, Thanks so much for the info on integrative treatment and accu. I think we all must be at a certain age/activity level cause this so hits home. Not to go into all my stuff, but I can benefit from everything you both have posted and I will be looking into it asap. I just started taking the mega dose of vit d. I think i was at an 18 on the scale. Also i'm in the meno ballpark but still get the monthlys and the prerequisite mood swings. Sooooooo.. there you go. Anyway, thanks ladies and rejected carebear take good care. BW

Acupuncture and herbs can definitely help perimenopause. Hopefully, you can find someone near you that you like.

  93. Dog pic - wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Bruises - meh, my wife and her mom both bruise easily. Even if our little 20lb dog jumps on her wanting a treat, she'll get a big bruise from it. Doesn't prove anything to me.

  94. Apparently the photographer of Man And Dog In Lake and I share a facebook friend or 12, because I've been seeing this pic for a week.

It really is such a nice picture to have and share. Hopefully Shoep and his owner's last years are full of moments like these. Caring for our aged pets is so bittersweet. I have similar pics of my late cat, who during his final decline wanted nothing more than to be held in our arms and close to us as much as possible. Sigh.

I will say that when he passed, we adopted another cat in an indecently short time and wouldn't you know, we won the awesome pet lottery because our new guy is great, too.

ok - Wow. Being robbed at gunpoint at work was a VERY traumatic experience. I wish I had your e-mail, but I know there's no way to do all this anonymously. Did your work provide counseling? I know therapy is so expensive on its own, so I wonder if there any books that could help? I bought one from Amazon but never even had to open it up because these other things helped me.
Regarding the sinus stuff - I still use Western meds when I have to, but my sis and some acquaintances do all homeopathic. Vitamin D is a huge immunity booster, as is garlic. Get as much raw garlic into your body on a regular basis, and when you start feeling sick, slice thin layers of garlic to bite and then suck on. Organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar can be taken daily to maintain health, or just when you start feeling sick. I mix 1-2 tablespoon in with small glass of water. Lastly, my friend Summer swears by grapefruit seed extract when she's sick.
Not trying to go hippie on your ass, but thought these inexpensive and completely natural remedies may help. Good luck!

    @Braverwoman
Glad that info could help. I am about to turn 40, but I had back to back babies a couple years ago and think it messed with my already goofy hormones. Have a wonderful weekend :)

  96. Sunny- my email is: forallthewidowsinparadise420 at gmail.com. Its not my main acct so I feel comfortable sharing it. Getting robbed was the most effed up thing that ever happened to me, the kids (they were 16!!) Hardly got in trouble. I felt robbed all over again. I never received any type of therapy for it which I know I should have. But its pricey! I don't mind the hippie treatments..I'm a little hippie myself :) thank you for helping me..its nice to talk!

  98. Carebear! That's horrible! Of course you would have anxiety.

I'm glad you like the lady near your house. Please let us know how it goes. I can email you my info but don't want to post here.

That you have sinus and digestive issues is not surprising. Very common pattern, esp if you had multiple rounds of antibiotics. There is often a fungal component associated like Candida. Antifungals (like garlic) can help. But I can't stress enough how going to a qualified person will be for you. I can't really diagnose or give specific advice over the blog. Not fair to you! You deserve the whole cake!

Wishing you happiness and health! Get ready to feel better!

  100. I'm interested in this thread too as I had a bout of Hyper thyroiditis 2 years ago. It comes and goes, but it's not bad enough to treat. It leaves me anxious, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, my nerves are always shot and also acid reflux. I also find running really really helps. If I miss a few days I'm a mess.
When they did my blood work last my Vitamin D was TOO high.
Anyway, it's great to know we aren't alone in this. :)

    1. Running is fabulous! My bf started and now he goes about 4 miles every other day. I never ever was into running before I started. I rolled my ankle very badly and have been not able to run for over a year. But it feels better and I think I may start soon.

I'm about to leave to go running (seriously!) but it has been my lifeline. I have a very "on" personality, so I need this outlet. When I first went to a GP with my symptoms, they were convinced it was a thyroid issue. Very similar symptoms to anxiety. I know it's hard Reno, but if you drink heaps of coffee/soda try to cut back. The first time I went back and had 3 cups of coffee and a Diet coke, my arms went numb and I felt like i was having a heart attack!
And seriously, when you feel that tight chest, try breathing from your abdomen. I am shocked at how much this helps me.

Thank you. Yes, you are very correct about the caffiene. I only drink one caffienated drink a day now. I've noticed if I'm out and have refills on my diet coke my heart is a mess later that day. Not a good feeling, lol.
I will definetly work on my breathing, thank you!

  104. I have a question about the "natural" 5HTP. If it is a natural amino acid, does that mean it comes from non-veg sources? Do they indicate where it comes from?
