Movie Review By Mooshki- Hit & Run

‘Hit and Run’ is the movie that just about every recent Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Aniston action/romantic comedy has tried to be, but failed. It’s smart and FUNNY, and the cast is talented and wonderful, from the leads down to each of the supporters. (And here I thought I couldn’t possibly love Kristen Chenoweth any more.)

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell have been living a quiet life in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Kristen is offered an interview for her dream job, but it’s in LA, the city that Dax fled when he joined the witness protection program. Because he is the kind of boyfriend who will track down a sloth to be a guest at your birthday party, he decides it’s worth risking his life to go back to LA so Kristen can follow her dream. Tom Arnold is Dax’s bumbling US Marshall protector who isn’t willing to let Dax leave until he fills out the proper paperwork. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor from Smallville) is Kristen’s ex, who hasn’t begun to let her go. He contacts Dax’s former partners in crime, hoping they will remove Dax from the picture so he can have Kristen back all to himself. This sets up a wild and crazy multiple-car chase that takes up most of the movie. Tom Arnold, Lex, Lex’s sheriff brother who is unwittingly helping him with his stalking, and the bad guys (Bradley Cooper, Joy Bryant [Dax’s stunningly beautiful partner from ‘Parenthood’], and Dick from ‘Veronica Mars’ [Kyle Bradway from ‘Party Down’ to you, Enty]) all are trying to get to one or the other of the traveling couple. Along the way, Lex manages to spill the beans to Kristen that Dax wasn’t the innocent bystander she thought he was, adding yet another layer to the who’s running from who game.

As per the usual formula, hijinks ensue, but they are not the usual clichés. (How often do you walk in on a “real life Lemon Party?” Warning: Google at your own risk.) Dax Shepard wrote and directed the movie as well as starring in it, and although I’ve always been a fan, I had no idea he was this talented. There were a couple of awkward moments (Including the bit about the prison rape, which I can’t figure out why they’d make that the main part of the trailer? I guess they’re always trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator…) but that and the unpolished filming style give it a nice semi-indie feel. The soundtrack is also great. Not in a Zach Braff/Wes Anderson hipster way, but more like in ‘Harold & Kumar,’ where the song choices add to the tone and humor of the movie.

I’m known to be easily amused, but there were many laugh-out-loud moments for the whole theater, so I know I wasn’t the only one who found it very funny. The romantic parts are sweeter and more sincere from knowing that Dax and Kristen are a real-life couple. Another warning: There is some bloody violence, in case you try to stay away from that sort of thing. That, and the fact that the movie doubles as a pretty great commercial for GM cars, means this is a good movie for both guys and gals. If you’ve got a date night planned for next weekend (it opens on the 22nd), I highly recommend this fun flick.

(Note: This is not a "hard R" - the rating comes from some very comical nudity. The violence is closer to PG-13 level.)

  6. Thanks Mooshki! I can't tell if I want to see it or not (from the commercials), your review made up my mind.

  7. Wait - why are we getting a movie review? Who says "hijinks"?!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I say "hijinks", it's a great word.

Mooshki is here like all of us are.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I wish Enty would tell us he's on vacation.

Agent's right. Mookshi is a long-time reader and commenter, but I've noticed she doesn't usually pop on until pretty late at night after you guys have called it a night. I'm on the West Coast, so I still get to enjoy her comments :)

  11. Oh yeah, Thanks @Mookshi!! I love the idea of Reader Reviews. Nice one :)

Most of us who were around before the Himmmm hoohaw know that Enty has on several occasions allowed a reader to review a movie. So take this out of your conspiracy file.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yup. No conspiracy here. Moosh has been on this site forever and is a Real Live Person.

      Delete
  13. As noted, Mooshki is a long-time reader/poster.

Enty occasionally has guest posters and movie reviewers. It's been a while, but this isn't the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Btw, love the word "hijinks"!

    ReplyDelete
  15. mookshi has been around since forever and the movie reviews come up every once in a while.
those who are freaking out: you havent been reading this blog long enough

  16. Ahhh! Who thinks up things like lemon parties? So wrong

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lemon party...I'm blind!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sunny, where on the west coast?

I'm sure Mookshi is delightful! I'm just confused by the blog this week. The voices and tone are off. Maybe Enty is constipated from eating too much bacon ice cream and it's making him cranky or something.

(Side note: bacon ice cream is freaking DELICIOUS. If you see it somewhere, try it.)

  19. It's kinda bittersweet that we have such an influx of new people post-hmmmmm's shit that they dont know who a seriously long ass time reader like Mooshki is.

It's great the CDaN group is expanding but it sort of sucks we seem to lose more long-termers and even someone who's been here probably when the site started is met with blank stares from the newbies. Ah well. Change is good, right?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Also, if you stick with the site long enough, you will see a ton of movie reviews by long-time people like Mooshki and Jax, amongst others.

This is not a new thing or a change of pace for Enty.
He also has people sometimes go to events and report back on them. This is nothing new.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Meh, I'll wait until it's on Netflix. And I've seen everything else.

  22. @Amber
San Diego!. I've always lived in the Northern beach towns, but we had to move about 20 minutes inland to be able to afford a house. The real estate is nuts here

Thanks for clarifying the movie review thing. I have seen an interview from Jax before, but I didn't become a religious reader until I gave up all my other blogs (but of course I still pop onto Dlisted. I love that man). This is the first movie review I've seen and I think it's cool

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Jasmine - I miss some people, too. I'm glad that the freakshows post-Himmmm seem to have dropped off though. That was rough.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Kristen did an interview a while back where she seemed incredibly humble. I had no opinion of her before that but liked her after reading it. No opinion of Dax at all but I get the impression they are a real love story. I hope it works out for them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. awesome Jasmine that you said this.
it's funny b/c i hardly ever post here anymore but this one made me. i am Delilah with the boyfriend Gustavo who did those 2 red carpet events a few years back.

PS: ENTY email us we want to do more!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh and Kristen got additional cool points for being on Party Down, granted it was a cult show but I really liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Unknown (Delilah) - you got to cover red carpet events? How fun! I can't even imagine what a rat race something like that is, never having seen one in person.

Sunny - my very good friend just moved to SD! I was actually there for New Year's 2011. Great town. My dad lives in LA, and my BF is from Sacramento. We'll be driving out there next week. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah Enty's had guest posters for quite awhile. He even had posters go to red carpets from time to time. Remember when that young kid did the Nickelodeon awards or something? He was great!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I would like to mention that I appreciate Mooshki's writing skills. It's not like reading a Mad Lib!

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's not proper English to use the word hijinks unless you qualify it with the adjective "wacky" and and follow it with "ensue".

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's Kristen BELL not Chenowith.

Thanks for the review- I was wondering if this movie was any good.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great review, Mooshki. I saw Kristen on a talk show about a month or so ago, and they showed a clip from the movie. It looked absolutely hilarious.

    And Jasmine said it best.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Unknown (Delilah) Hi! I remember your post, it was great!

Glad to do my part to help entice a long-timer to emerge ;-))

EmEyeKay- while the freakshow that was the whole hmmmmmm debacle has ceased for the most part, I cant help but still feel the vibe of CDaN is just different than it used to be before that happened. I know some people who are long standing CDaN commentors have just stopped posting because the vibe or the responses gets to them. Sometimes it feels so clique-like or vicious or whatever that it's turned many many lovely long-timers away. Some still lurk and read occasionally but even Enty's posts have gotten a little more scintillating to appease/bring in the new influx of people. The blinds are just....intense. It's great the site seems so flexible and apt to grow and change but sometimes those changes can feel a wee bit bitter to swallow, ya know?
    :)

  35. I think it's a PR shill...no offense to Mooshki or Enty, everyone has the right to make a buck but I'm with the above posters who noticed the tone is off...it's very bitchy lately, and movie studios are not above paying a blogger to favorably review a movie. When I see a review of a movie that says the movie sucks and don't waste your money, then I'll chalk it up to contributing commenters...I don't care who writes this stuff, I take it with a grain of salt anyway and I love the site, but stuff like this is odd, and a few posts of late have been odd. Just sayin' ....

    ReplyDelete
  36. kristen and dax were on wait wait don't tell me recently and were (i thought) very funny and sweet. glad to hear the movie is so good, i'll check it out!

  40. Oh and hi Sunny in San Diego. Has it cooled off there yet? I had a great two week vacay at South Mission and now it's back to the SoCal desert. Ugh. I'll be back in SD for Labor Day and one last beach weekend.

  41. Great review. I actually would like to see it. But will wait for blu ray. My bf is a home theater geek so its usually more fun at home.

  42. Ok, 2 things. I enjoy many hijinks, no matter how many ensue. And i know everybodys gonna go all dog day afternoon on me, but i hv always enjoyed tom arnold in movies! Think 9 months, and that one with jamie lee and schwarterscrewer. Hes really funny! Ok, let me hv it, lol

  45. Dax recently guest hosted Chelsea Lately, and I am not ashamed to admit that I am now crushing on him hard. Kristen Bell is awesome and a fellow Detroiter (as is Dax), and we have some mutual friends. I will see this and I think they make a lovely couple.

  52. Thanks for the review Mooshki, don't know if I would have gone otherwise.
I also like Tom Arnold in movies, he makes a great sidekick.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks Mooshki! I love these two seperately and together, great review :)

  54. Seconding what Ash said about their appearance two weeks ago on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me." They were both pretty funny. Looking forward to the movie.

  55. Yeah, where IS Dixie? It's been awhile. I bet she's just really busy with summertime/beer/kids.

If you're reading, Dixie, hihihi! Miss you!

  56. Yay, Mooshki! Great review and it's so fun to see a reader posting!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love Ryan Hansen (Kyle Bradway), but I don't think I can make myself go see this. It's just not my type of movie. Thank you for the review, Mooshki!

I also googled Lemon Party. Can't unsee that. I'm trying my best though.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Whereas I think Kristen Bell can do no wrong (loved Veronica Mars), I'm going to skip this one. The reason being one of my very good friends had a free ticket and actually walked out before the end because she hated it. To each their own I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I knew of Dire Potato from Sucks, another website some readers here came from. Timmy/ shimmy brought me here too. Mooshkis in Vancouver I think? Anyways great review. Hopefully its funnier than the campaign

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well, she can't write! Back to the day job.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm not sure I would know about lemon parties if not for 30 Rock (will always love them for sneaking that past the censors.)

If using "hijinks" is wrong, I don't want to be right.

    ReplyDelete
  62. And if you just google "what is a lemon party" you're not going to be besieged with photos or anything. I know I'm not if I try it. (And I just did.)

You can get the gist from the descriptions that come up. And there's always urbandictionary.

(I hate to ruin the surprise.)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well, Moosh - it seems that you are fake as well. Thanks for the review, fake Mooshki!!

Moosh and Jas (and Jax and Gladys and RQ) are some of the ORIGINALS.

And some of my favorite people.

And for those of you who don't believe it's the same, don't understand why you're still reading the blog??

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love you too mngddess

    ReplyDelete
  65. LOL, lazyday603.

Lisa, it's Kristen Bell and Kristen Chenoweth. It's a Kristen-a-thon!

To the conspiracy theorists & newbies: A loooong time ago, a great reader named DNfromMN was going to a lot of previews, and he posted reviews of movies for the blog. When he moved out of the cities, I wrote a few of them for Enty. If you click on the "Movie Review" tag, you can see the old reviews from DN, Gladys, me, and a few others. I cut way back on posting on CDaN because I was tired of all the fighting and attacking that happened when I posted, but I decided to dip my toes back in because I really enjoyed this movie, and it was hard to tell from the preview if it would be any good or not, so I wanted to give you guys my thoughts on the film. If I hadn't had the free tickets, I'm not sure I would've gone, and I would've missed out!

Popcorn, Ryan Hansen has kind of a straight-man role, and doesn't get to do much, so you won't really miss out in that way.

Amy, Mooshki is in Minneapolis. :)

YourNameHere, Lemon Party is one of the "shock sites" that people used to get a kick out of tricking their friends into visiting. From Wikipedia: "Lemonparty.org contains an image of three elderly naked men in a bed kissing and having oral sex."

To jetfuelgenius and also the conspiracy theorists, I wrote a lukewarm review of 'Hot Tub Time Machine,' which Enty loved, so I think that's pretty good evidence that I'm not Enty or a PR shill.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Aren't Moosh and Jas and Jax and Gladys and RQ and Enty all the same person anymore? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  67. To my dear Enty: Thank you for posting my ramblings once again, even though, as I mentioned above, we don't typically have the same taste in movies. :) You're the best!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Mooshki! You're in Mpls too??? What part? Holy crap I started to feel like everyone was in Portland (re: the bike post)

  72. Really Jax? Or is it all just an elaborate hoax?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think it is interesting how people make comments without knowing the whole story and then try to change subjects/ignore their own ignorance (I know, I know) instead of owning up to it.

What brought me to this blog WAYYY back were the comments. I still enjoy them here more than at any other site (so don't tell me to find another blog blah blah blah), but sometimes they can be a bit too much.

Sometimes it does seem really clique-y and fake, like everyone is competing to be the most popular commenter. I laughed out loud at a comment from a few weeks ago where someone said he or she was "still reeling" from someone else's comment from even longer ago! It's just a f*cking blog!

That being said, I love this blog and the comments and thanks again Mooshki!

Sorry for the super looong post everyone.

It's still baking here, although today was a little better. It's been between 85 and 90 where I live, so naturally it's all anyone can talk about :) My friends who live in Del Mar rent a house right on the beach in South Mission every year during her sons' Spring Break, and lets us tag along. 79. We've rented the same beach house for several years so the owner cuts us some slack (like no deposit). We're beach side, but not beach front so it's not too terribly expensive. Short walking distance to bars...The Pennant and Beachcomber, so we're further south from your condo.

It's been triple digits in the desert and humid as hell, but at least we've got A.C., my friends in SD are melting in front of their little fans. My power bill is going to be a killer.

I don't know when this blog started, but I've been hanging out since the Hez days and before the Timmy thing. I used to wonder about certain things and most of all Enty, but after all this time, I really don't care. I'm here for the gossip, snark, photos, blinds, reveals, and most of all the comments!

Some sites attack you for the littlest things said so I understand where you are coming from! I wish I found this site earlier than I did. I like to think I made a few new friends here as well and of course I was a lurker before I felt comfortable enough to comment and know that I wouldn't be attacked!! Can't we all just get along:)?

  85. I started reading about the time MV blind was first posted, I think. 3-4 years ago, maybe? The first post I read was about Enty going to shoe stores trying to find a pair of shoes for a woman he liked. It was a very funny blog then and quite lighthearted. Lots of posts from or about Carly.

I remember the postings really changed about the time Enty allowed some "My Turn" anonymous posts--some were waaay out there, like the guy who admitted killing kittens or something like that (correct me if I'm wrong).

In addition to some of the original posters already mentioned, I remember sunnyside and Lisa(original). And the 2 different roberts!

Okay, so I have no freakin' idea what I'm trying to say. Thanks, Mooshki for the review. And I love this site. And things change, and people change and move on. And I'm done yakking, lol.

Some of these posters have been here a really long time. I remember a bunch getting together in CA once? I used to live in Ohio but now in Texas(busy few years) but I don't see the changes the rest of you see. Mooshki, great review, I will go see it based on what you said.

  90. Momster, I started reading at MV too. And I think you're thinking of Ror, who posted that he had killed an actual person. (And possibly kittens too? I don't remember for sure.) I still have no idea if he was telling the truth or not. But I do know he threatened to kill me not long after that. Yeah, the site has had its ups and downs, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  91. OMG - I remember Ror! He actually threatened you? There were definitely some interesting people way back then (not that there aren't now, just that some of them were rather unique).

  93. Thanks Mooshki. I love film and television, so I appreciate the review. I happened to love Hot Tub Time Machine. Was on holidays with my husband & we were in Seattle (for the new posters I am from Australia), we had a great Italian dinner, I was drunk, & we went & saw the movie - good times. Also, really like reading comments from the long timers. Please come back. As I have written before, your presence helps to positively influence the site, don't let the trolls win.

I asked a few days ago; does anyone know what happened to Wil? She was from MN and once posted that she was awaiting a call from her doctor telling her if it was cancer or not, and then she disappeared. I hate that. Did anyone know her in real life?

  97. @ Mooshki - Great review.

Ror is stupid and I do believe he killed that man. You didn't tell me he threatened you. Very dumb of him, especially since we uncovered all that information on him, including his computer business (with address & phone number). The police were appreciative of us providing all that information to them.

  98. Amber, right now I'm only a block away from the Cabooze. I'm living in one of the big apartment complexes on Franklin, right by the Taco Hell. It's student housing, so it's been an interesting experience, lol. Looking forward to having my own house again. I lived at LynLake for a year after college. Had some great parties there. :) I hate moving, so thanks for the good wishes.

Momoster, ClassAlpha is a hoot. He's the good kind of crazy.

WUWT, I don't know what happened with Wil. I think she emailed me once - I'll try to track her down.

    Hugs to you too, Dia.

Ms., I actually talked to a cop about his threats, but he said there was very little I could do since he lived in a different state. What freaked me out was that I knew he had friends who were still in Minneapolis, and it wouldn't be that hard to find my real name. I tried to track down info about the killing he described, but it was hard since the Star Tribune online archives don't go back that far. I did contact the state Cold Case department, but never heard back from them.

  99. It's nice to see old posters come out of the woodwork. I was trying to figure out when I first started reading here and you guys are reminding me of a lot of stuff. I read sporadically before I posted anything. I lost my name and login after not being around for a while and then came back as Lola, which I've been posting under for maybe a couple of years (crap, I can't remember...I can't even remember how my kid became a 12 yo).

Momster, wasn't the cat torture guy the reason the anonymous feature disappeared rather quickly?

I left for awhile after that. :shudders:

    ReplyDelete
  100. Mooshki...yes, Ror. I remember thinking he was a little, "I'm too cool" but otherwise seemed relatively normal...before, that is. I don't remember him saying anything about murder though...that's nuts.

    I'm glad you stayed safe.

Thanks for the review; I'm going to go see the movie; you could've said it sucked and I'd go see it...but I adore K Bell. I'd sit in a movie theater and watch her watching paint dry and love it.

  102. Well, Mooshki, I was just laid off from my job and have a bit of time on my hands. I'm going to hit the library and play detective to find the victim. Ror posted so many helpful details... then I'll contact the homicide detective I spoke with, who did take this info seriously since he called me a couple of times, and we had a couple of email exchanges.

  103. Been lurking again for ages, but came out to say that was a great review Mooshki. (OK, back under my rock.)

  105. Ms. I thought about going to the library, but never got around to it. If you start in 1980 and check the papers for January 1st-3rd for a few years, it should show up if it really happened. I can't remember if that was before the Star and the Tribune merged?

  106. Oh, and I'm very sorry you got laid off from your job. :(

I don't know if I'm older than you or younger than you, but help me sleep tonight and remove the comment that kinda describes where you live. You guys scared the Bejeebus out of me talking about that stalker (murderer?) and I want you to be safe.
    I'll be checking back :)
P.S. We call my Dad Mr. Safety, so I come by this honestly

  109. sunnyside1213! I really wondered what happened to you. You may have "disappeared" before I started actually posting, I can't remember. Glad you're still around. Try to post every few months so we know you're around. Seriously, these people I don't know get into my consciousness and then disappear and I actually worry about why they aren't around. Some announce it, like AKM, so I am sad they are gone but at least I don't have to wonder, others just fall off the map....

  110. Where is SueEllenMishkey? (sp ? sorry)

  111. Thanks for the advice, Sunny. This was years and years ago, though, and I don't think he reads the blog any more. I doubt he could've kept his mouth shut all this time - he had too much twisted anger he needed to get out all the time. And that location has a few thousand people, lol. But you're right, safety first!

I think Sue Ellen may have gotten as tired of the bickering as I did. Or, her work and school got too busy.

Ha ha. I got the impression that evil guy was from a while back, but reading the thread reminded me that there are more than just peeps like me reading this site (B of S anyone?). I've been very loose with info (what beach I go to, where my old shop is) but I think I'm going to zip it going forward. My Dad would be proud :)
    Take care!

  114. Agent**It, you're one of the last people I would ever expect to understand the problem.

  115. Thank you. I believe you and your response helps shape my opinion, Mooshki.

  116. Aw, darn. I'd hate to be held in poor esteem by someone who has the good judgment to spill confidential information about former clients.

If the new readers are so unimpressed by Enty's "poor writing," I don't know why they are still here? That's what drives me crazy. It's so rude to come to a site and bitch about it constantly. Constructive criticism is a different story, but most people don't seem to know the difference.

  117. Well said, as usual, Moosh. The comment threads have become long tirades of bitching, bullying and fighting. I've been here since 08, but these days I stick to Enty's posts, rarely venturing into the comments at all.
