Your Turn

It's Friday the 13th. You can talk about your favorite horror movie. You can talk about bad things that have happened to you today. Are you superstitious?

  3. Favorite horror movie? ROSEMARY'S BABY. Perfect in every way. I love all horror.

I often have GREAT Friday the 13ths for some reason. It seems to be lucky for me.

  4. Parenthood

Seriously SCARY movie. Think about it

  5. When I was sixteen, I passed my road test on a Friday the 13th. It's always been a pretty lucky day for me; at least I hope so, since I have a client presentation this afternoon.

  6. 28 Days Later freaked me the fuck out!

Poltergeist scared the hell out of me when I was a kid so it'll always be my favorite. I didn't see Psycho until I was in uni and The Exorcist until a couple of years ago. I guess if I saw them when I was younger they'd be my favorites.

I do remember seeing a movie on TV where a woman was taking a shower and the camera panned behind her to a snake in the bathtub. I was about five and for the longest time I would check behind me when I would take a shower. Does anybody know what movie that was?

  7. Anything Hitchcock!

My mind must have been in friday the 13th mode, because I had a dream I was watching a twilight zone episode, but I think my brain made up the episode. There was this party and this little kid was obsessed with this dead person, and in the end, he stapled the dead persons head to his own and pretended he was him. I know, Im wierd. It was so creepy! hahah

  8. The original Halloween. Just the music gives me the shivers.

    ReplyDelete
  9. My neighbor's dog escaped and no one can catch it so he must be having the bad luck day.

    ReplyDelete
  10. AKM - I LOVE Rosemary's Baby! I always tell my BF I know he's going to sacrifice my womb for his career.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The Exorcist. No contest. Scariest mofo I ever saw. I still change channels if I see it on.

    ReplyDelete
  12. After I saw The Ring I stopped being able to cope during horror movies, and haven't watched on since. Seriously. I was having awful, freakishly realistic dreams for weeks afterward, and still to this day have to have every room containing a mirror in it's door closed when I'm home alone. When I find myself alone in a room with a mirror and it's really quiet, the fear starts to build up until I yell for my husband, who used to roll his eyes and by now has realized it is an actual, debilitating fear. Fuck horror movies. And I'm having a GREAT day so far, just to let everyone know. Going to play poker tonight, and going to Forecastle Festival tomorrow to see Andrew Bird and My Morning Jacket, our hometown heroes. Am happy!

  13. @Vicki - They Came From Within?

  14. Friday the 13th was my Grama's lucky day, so I try to keep that in mind. It's funny because I actually live in Apt. #13 but they changed it and made me the last apt....it throws people off all the time.

  15. My birthday is on the 13th, so I love the 13th of any month! I was pissed that last year's leap year screwed me out of a Friday the 13th bday :(

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm only superstitious about college football. No games scheduled today, so we're all good.

  18. I loved the original Friday the 13th movie! I was in my early teens I think, and I will NEVER forget the scene where he opens the door and the guy is pinned to the door with arrows through his eyeballs! hahaha That scared the piss outta me, and my friends and I shrieked and laughed so hard, fond memory.

  20. My first scary film was Alien. I was too young when I saw it and was freakin' terrified. My dad also made me watch the original Thing around the same time. Maybe that's why I don't really like scary films.

28 Days Later made me stock up for the apocalypse.

Exorcist (bc I'm from DC and we would walk the stairs to be cool).

The Walking Dead series is excellent! Great TV and scary!

    ReplyDelete
  21. 13 has long been a lucky number in my family. Scariest movie: Gremlins. Can't stand those things - even the 'cute' versions. *shiver*

    ReplyDelete
  22. Prince of Darkness! It's so cheesy. 28 Days Later and the original Halloween are also favorites.

Don't consider myself superstitious but I do knock on wood. (So maybe I am?)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I loved the Prince of Darkness! I really wanted a part two to see if she came out of the mirror.

      Delete
  23. Ooooh, wait - I forgot the original "Zombie" - I think that's what it's called. 70s movie set on an island. The music is super creepy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm a horror movie buff. The old ones are the best, no contest. As for newer, Jeepers Creepers, The Hills Have Eyes, The Ring...good jump out of your seats!

Ohh...when I was a kid The Changeling scared the bejebus outta me. All I remember is that ball bouncing down the stairs by itself.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Best horror flick ever?
    Phantasm.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @EmEyeKay - great flick!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I also really love bad/cheesy horror movie> Has anyone seen Sleepaway Camp? hhahaa its creepy but really fun to watch

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Maggie Casey - the ending was definitely scary.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No idea, FSP. I think it was a rattlesnake in the tub with her. I read the plot of They Came from Within, but it didn't say anything about snakes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nightmare on Elm Street #1 and 3-Dream Warriors! That shit is too campy, crappy AWESOMENESS!

Also w/ all of you re Poltergeist, Friday 13, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist and Halloween! Classics.

My sister and I were Horror afficiandos in the 80's. We seriously rented every single one off the rack in the video store.
My family still laughs and laughs over watching "Basket Case". Anyone seen that? OMG too funny and gross!

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Em Cue Em - I haven't seen the ring, but when I was in second grade, I was terrified of bathroom mirrors for about a year after hearing about bloody mary.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If it were a rattlesnake, then it wasn't TCFW. In TCFW it was a slug type thing. Perhaps Deadly Blessing or Rattlers.

    ReplyDelete
  33. and p.s Although I'm not necessarily superstitious about Fri the 13th....I AM superstitious enough to now worry of repercussions from my sharing my deepest fears with the public, via the film I chose.

    //had to say it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Maggie Yes! That movie was great campy horror too! I remember one scene to this day and it is horrifying if you know what I'm talkin' about!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I LOVE Friday, the 13th! I'm born on the 13th, so I'm quite partial to the day.

Fave horror movie is Romero's Dawn of the Dead, but I like the Lucio's Italian Zombi 2. That is the movie where the zombie takes a bite out of a shark, and the shark bites back! Too cool!

    ReplyDelete
  36. @EmKeyEm
    That's Lucio's Zombie 2!

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Pilly - word, I comprende, touche' ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Alien!
    The Thing!
The Silence of the Lambs!(horror movie for me)
    It!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jaws may not be as scary as some of the the others listed above, but it fundamentally changed my life, in that I never go more than knee-deep in the nearby beach. In particular, one of the later attacks in the film, where a swimmer is basically gulped whole still gives me chills.

Trying not to think about this 13th as my birthday is tomorrow. I'll be turning 42, so maybe I finally get to learn the secret of the universe.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was born 2 minutes after midnight on Friday the 13th. Therefore, I am not superstitious about the day.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Cathy - oh man, that Bloody Mary thing scared the crap out of me! We also had the legends of La Llorona, the Donkey Lady, the chupacabra, and the ghost kids at the tracks to contend with where I'm from (San Antonio). Oh, and can't leave out Midget Mansion. I was one scared white girl!!

Egads, what about playing with the ouija board at slumber parties? All that shit FREAKED me out! Needless to say, I hate horror movies, too!

I'd had too much Southern Baptist churchin' to be able to deal with my friends' Mexican Catholic sensibilities. Although as an adult, I love Dia De Los Muertos and the art associated with that day.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 13 has always been a lucky number for me. I didn't even realize it was Friday the 13th.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Check out Romero's early flick Martin! I loved it.

Rosemary's Baby and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (does the latter count as horror)?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh my, not really horror, but remember that movie Seven with Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman? We thought we were going to see a police procedural. I was practically on the floor of the theater before it was all over. It rocked my world for weeks afterward.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I hate horror films, but The Birds Gave me nightmares as a kid.

I don't need a movie to celebrate -- here in Seattle, mother nature is giving us a thunderstorm as a soundtrack for the day.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My favorite horror spoof recently is "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" which sends up the college kids camping in the woods and dying gruesomely one by one genre.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Today is my birthday, and I only have until 10:00 to midnight for Lilo to crash.

I was born on Friday the 13th, got married on Friday the 13th, our house selling and our house buying both closed the same day, Friday the 13th. I kind of have to go with it as a good day.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I wish I had been born on a Friday, but it was a Thursday :( My best birthdays were Fridays.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @lazyday, Tucker and Dale was great! Definitely in the same league as Shaun of the Dead.

    ReplyDelete
  50. LOVE Tucker and Dale and Shaun of the Dead! Brilliant, brilliant movies! Also loved Cabin in the Woods! Would the Evil Dead series count at horror spoofs? Evil Dead 2 is a classic.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Henriette - I was born on a Tuesday the 13th so it wasn't even close! Leap year skipped my Friday the 13th last year, so now I don't get another one for something like 8 years. :(

    ReplyDelete
  52. today is actually my birthday! i also turned 13 on friday the thirteenth. and im actually getting married in a little over a year, on friday the thirteenth.

@Henriette - that's the one! Just watched the trailer on imdb. The music gives me chills.

  57. I am so superstitious, I was born on the 13th so it is a lucky number for me:)

Best scary movie for me is and will always be; The Shining!!!!

Scared the shit out of me when I was younger! Not that I am old now:)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Frailty is such a perfect movie, everyone in it is wonderful and you have to watch it a few times to get it.
I admire Silence of the Lambs, the book was so good but the movie was even better which doesn't happen often, watched it 20 times and it still gives me the chills, same as Jaws which has really held up over the years.
When I was younger When a Stranger Calls. I never saw the remake and I should, but the Carol Kane version was pretty terrifing. The Haunting scared me for a long time, the Julie Harris original, not the CZJ remake.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Pumpkinhead!!!!!! It takes place in Appalachia and it has Lance Henrickson. It's amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  60. As someone who's seen pretty much every horror movie ever made, none of them scare me, but you know what does?

Unsolved Mysteries! Terrifying show! And that creepy music! I still can't watch that show (and it airs on Lifetime)

    ReplyDelete
  61. It's Friday the thirteenth, I manage the inventory for a chain of retail stores.

We are doing our yearly physical inventory.

    You do the math. :)

Horror or scary movie--when I was about 12, I was home sick from school and my parents had to go out for a while so I was home alone and I was watching the Bella Lugosi Dracula on some old movie channel and I got myself so scared I was afraid to go to the bathroom by myself because I thought Dracula was behind the shower curtain.

I must have had a fever....:) I'm not usually scared by movies.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Horror movies give me nightmares. Just watching a few minutes will cause me terrible dreams, so goes without saying I don't watch them.

As far as being superstitious, not really but I'm a firm believer in Karma. So I try not to do anything that will karmacially come back to bite me in the ass.

  65. July 13th is the day of Rock baby!!!! Aaand friday the 13th this year! Perfect! :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I too was born on a Friday the 13th! The kicker too is that the moon was full that day. Extra awesome. Totally not superstitious about it.

I don't care much for horror films but I did think Silence of the Lambs was the last scary-ish movie I saw that I actually liked. The Ring: AHHHHHH.

Loved Unsolved Mysteries! Ahh, Robert Stack.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Here's a chance for me to recommend one of the great horror/monster/sci-fi movies of all time, "Gojira," which is the original Japanese version of "Godzilla." If you've seen the Americanized version which trashes the whole storyline and sticks in Raymond Burr like a thumb in your eye, then be prepared for a real surprise. "Gojira" is a brilliant, heartbreaking movie not just about atomic weapons but about science itself. A fabulous movie. Go rent it now.

I saw "Alien" when it came out more than 30 years ago and I swear, by the time it was over I was under my seat peeing my pants. Wow! I haven't seen it since. If I'm channel surfing and come across it I switch. Can't watch it. (All the sequels sucked royal dd.)

When I was a kid I watched the original version of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" probably after midnight on the little b&w TV in my bedroom and it scared the dickens out of me then. Still one of my all-time favorite movies. Everyone involved with the remake should be ashamed of themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My babysitter when I was a kid used to watch bad horror movies with my sister and me. To this day we have these shared memories of awful scenes, like the guy getting concrete dumped on him to bury him alive... and his foot not fitting in the mold so... anyway No idea which movie that actually was but we were each of us convinced we'd dreamt it until we talked about it together!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anything that Jennifer Anniston is in scares the crap out of me

    ReplyDelete
  70. John Carpenter's The Thing.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Salem's Lot (tv movie from the 70s) scared the bejesus out of me as a very young girl (thanks mom and dad)! The Exorcist and the freaking Ring scare me!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I was raised by superstitious mom. To this day, I wld walk over hot coals to get shoes off a table. No open brollys in house. No under the ladder action. No black cats, thank you, if u sneeze, whatever u thinking is true, if you gv someone something sharp- like dressmaker scissors- u gv coin with it to prevent breaking the friendship. Knocking wood, saying god bless u, and on and on. So firmly entrenched i not even aware if doing it. A big one with me: dont speak ill of the dead!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Event Horizon! That movie scares the crap out of me. I couldn't even make it to the end.
Growing up, I loooved Nightmare on Elm Street!

    ReplyDelete
  74. thanks you guys. :0)

    ReplyDelete
  75. I saw the Nightmare on Elm Street movies as a kid. They still are my favorite, not a scary though.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Michelle Pfeiffer & Harrison Ford in What Lies Beneath.

It's 3 movies in one that ends up being a scary horror movie at the end.

    Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  77. No particular favorite horror movie, but the original Friday the 13th movie was released on the day of my senior prom, May 9, 1980. Fitting, in a way.

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Worstcompany - YES! What Lies Beneath Scared the crap out of me! There was one point where I poked myself in the eye trying to watch between my fingers and jumping at something coming up out of a bathtub.

I am quite superstitious but generally not abouy Fridat the 13th. I mean, it's Friday. How bad can it be?

I am not a fan of horror movies but it seems I only have friends who are so I've seen a few. "Pet Sematary" was one of my first ones and it's still creepy.

But I LOVE those ghost hunting shows on TV! I can't help it. They scare me and keep me up at night, but I can't. stop. watching them. My favourite was "Dead Famous" and I wish it would come back!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Friday the 13th has always been a good day for me. My daughter was born on the 13th. Today my boss called me to tell me I got a promotion and raise - I'm on vacation this week, she goes next week but wanted to tell me herself.

  80. Not superstitious. Don't have a favorite horror movie, but a fun story about one. Last Friday the 13th, we decided to watch the 'best horror show ever made!' with our teenage son. We talked this movie up then sat through it. It was horrible, but we played like it was the best ever...best effects, best acting, best soundtrack. Popcorn, sodas, blankets. We got about an hour into it before we couldn't fake it anymore. Teenager thought we'd lost our minds, gave us a nasty look and went up to his room, leaving us alone to laugh at our cleverness. :) Movie was Prophecy, the 1979 movie about industrial pollution with the little baby/monster who was a result of mercury poisoning. I remember it freaked me out when I was a teenager.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Maja - you need to come watch your ghost shows with my ten year old. He loooves them, but they freak him out after he goes to bed! Thank goodness we have a couch in our bedroom :-).

    ReplyDelete
  82. I had a terrible afternoon at work; wanted to quit the job but had to reconsider cause I have no chances of finding another one.
This happened even though I planned to be quiet and calm; fridays are terrible here but this was the worst.
    I want to die

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ugh! My comments keep getting deleted!!! I haven't been reposting, but I'm making an exception for this topic. My favorite horror movie is John Carpenter's Halloween. The perfect mix of suspense & horror.

One of the only other movies to scare me was The Strangers and NOT in a good way!

    ReplyDelete
  84. My scariest Friday the 13th? Giving birth to my son.
It was also my best!!! I love that kid. Just in case--to negate my typical, bad luck and him being born on Fri. the 13th--we named him after his dad (kind of)...Joseph, (his dad is Jose).

    ReplyDelete
  85. Favorite Horror Movie: A Nightmare on Elm Street.

    ReplyDelete
  86. @Frufa
Seven disturbed me to no end. Back in the day, my ex and I used to do a little puff puff before going to the movies. The night we went to go see Seven we were running late and had to pass on the puffery. 10 minutes into the movie, we looked at each other like THANK GOD WE ARE NOT HIIIIIIIIIIGH right now!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. @Anni....hang in there. And note some of us (me) are totally jealous that you even have a job. I am looking and looking, and it SUCKS as there is nothing out there. Literally, there were three jobs listed in the local paper for Monday, Tues and Wed.

(and mind you, I'm conserving cash so I'm going to the library to look at the paper's want adds)

Either way, your frustration I'm sure is justified. I hope your evening and weekend is better.

    Bless

  88. Mine would have to be Willard - the one with creepy Crispin Glover.

    All of those rats...

    ReplyDelete
  89. The Desent scared the crap outta me, but my FAVE movie is Braindead, released in the States as Dead Alive.

Get it if you can find it - it's Peter Jacksons first film with a budget of over a million and it puts ALL of his other work to shame!

    ReplyDelete
  90. They just don't make them like these anymore:

    The Changeling (1980)-George C. Scott

    The Others-(1972)

    Good movies, scary.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Poltergeist. Still scares the shit out of me. And I still remember the nightmare I had the night after my dumbass dad took me and my brother to see it.

The Descent is also one of my faves, but it's scary in a different way, because I get SO claustrophobic while watching it! Another of Neil Marshall's films, Dog Soldiers, is also really good.

House of 1000 Corpses was the most disturbing horror movie I've ever seen. Should've walked out of the theater instead of sticking around for the whole thing.

I've watched a fair amount of torture porn, but I'll never watch Cannibal Holocaust because they actually tortured and killed animals while making that movie. Fiction is one thing; that shit is not okay. I'd rather watch Hostel a thousand times that see that. God, Hostel was a crap movie.

My brother was born on a Friday the 13th, so today is supposedly lucky for him.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Comma Chaser, you'll have the ultimate answer, but will you have the ultimate question? :) Love the reference.

    MadLyb, congrats!

Anni, I'm sorry. I hope you'll have an opportunity to leave sometime in the near future.

    ReplyDelete
  93. So sorry @Anni. Remember to breathe! That always seems to help me.

I was in a horrible work situation with an abusive boss. I kept praying for a new job or something better. I ended up quiting and starting my own business. It's a struggle but I'm so much happier. Things have a way of working out. We are here for you!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I love Friday the 13th! 3 is my lucky number so naturally I enjoy 13 (also the number 6) but I've never experienced awful or great things on these days. I own black cats so today doesn't make me nervous!
As for movies..whoever said FRAILITY, fuck yes that movie is the scariest movie I've ever seen-why? Cause it happens and will always happen. Scary scary shit. Go see it tho ;) Not a very scary movie but still a fun one- Creeepshow! If anyone wants a terrifying haunted house to go to, check out Ripleys Haunted Adventure, it like movie quality props and makeup and oh so real.

  95. A movie that always horrified me was Shadow of a Doubt, a 40's Hitchcock movie with Joseph Cotten and an unbelievably young MacDonald Carey. No overt Hitchcock horror, like Psycho's shower, but just creepy creepy growing awareness that Things Are Not What They Should Be. I was not sure all the way through of what the ending would be. Excellent movie. More shock than horror, I guess. And LOVE the 40's clothes and sensibility.

    ReplyDelete
  96. One of my favourite horror movies is the orginal April Fools Day. So deliciously camp. It's glorious, really.

I am not superstitious about Friday the 13th because it's lucky in some cultures and I perfer to look at it as such.

    ReplyDelete
  97. @Frufra - OK, but can I sleep on the couch in your bedroom too? Because I get scared. *L*

    ReplyDelete
  98. Vicki, I think the movie you are thinking of is Ssssssss, a fabulously campy yet scary movie starring Dirk Benedict.

All horror movies freak me out, yet I still watch them. Here in Aus Friday the 13th was yesterday. Had a bit of a blah day at work, but a wonderful date night with my husband.
