"Ted" Sets Record For R Rated Comedy

It was a big weekend at the box office. Ted was expected and did end up breaking the all time box office opening weekend record for an R rated movie. It earned $54.1M which was above expectations. Way way way above expectations was Magic Mike which was supposed to maybe hit $20M. It grossed just short of $40M. Apparently there were lots and lots of ladies nights this weekend. Women were 73% of the audience for Magic Mike. Brave finished third with $34M. I still have not seen that one. People Like Us was not liked and is the biggest opening bomb of this weekend. It made just $4M and cost $20M to make.

  1. I went to see Magic Mike and I enjoyed it. The plot was less than stellar but the hot bodies more than made up for it. However, Alex Pettyfer and the actress who played his sister were so awful and distracting. The girl bugged me and I dunno who she slept with for that part but she did not earn that part with her amazing acting skills. Big Dick Richie was my favorite tho, he got my mojo rising!!

  3. Thanks for the review, @rejectedcarebear. I'm going to go see it tomorrow, despite noticing in the previews that those two seem to suck, and now with your confirmation that they do indeed blow chunks. I just want to see those dudes dance!

I went to see Prometheus yesterday. The Magic Mike shows were sold out, even in the afternoon. I go to a theater that serves alcohol. The ladies going to see Magic Mike were boozing it up all afternoon. It was like when the Sex and the City movies were playing, but on steroids. On steroids, get it?!?

  4. @rejectedcarebear I heard the girl who played the sister is actually the daughter of some studio exec. No wonder she couldn't act.

    Nepotism starts at home.

  5. I was surprised by how few men went to the Magic Mike screening that I was at. It was an awesome film, by the way. Long drawn-out art-house moments slowed down the pace, but the film forced you to look at everything from the female character's perspective as her brother was drawn into a world of sleaziness and depravity. And Channing Tatum is a national treasure. Nicolas Cage should do a film exploring him!

  6. Vicki---I came early to CDAN, I was so excited about the news! Michael K is gonna 'SPLODE! I can't wait to read his post about it!

  7. Oh nolachickee, I would fear a drunk audience of crazy women at Magic Mike! The crowd at the theater I went to was quite rowdy.

  8. I know, I know! MK hasn't posted on A Coop just yet, bit I'm standing by...

I loved Coop's whole article, actually. Smart guy. Love him.

  9. The female actress reminded me of KStew, and I had the serious urge to commit a violent act on her face. However, the hot bodies and Tatum's ass completely made up for her horribleness.

  10. I heard Ted was hilarious! I'm just glad to see Madea didn't break the top 3. I'm so sick of those commercials. Those jokes are lame.

  11. She was SOOOO dreadful and im glad im not the only one who felt that way. When i saw the movie, the audience was overwhelmingly female (id say about 95%) but there was a large group of older men sitting way up in the corner of the theater, kind of hidden. I saw it with my gay bff, and the first thing he noticed was all the dudes hidden in the back of the theater.

  12. @rejectedcarebear- the chicks dad is the president of Warner Bros. I saw it too and she blew. To me the best part was watching a theater full of middle aged women acting like they have never seen an ass jiggle before. There was 1 guy in the whole theater and when we left
There was already a line for the next showing.

  14. I went to see Magic Mike on Friday night with a big group of girl friends. Incredible! The theater we went to was so boisterous that four women actually got into a fight and had to be escorted out by security. The stripping scenes were insanely sexy. Holy shit, the "Pony" routine?!?! I almost fell out of my chair. Channing Tatum is a gift to women sent straight from the heavens. The other guys were smoking hot too (Alex Pettyfer, looking at you). Ladies, go see this movie!

  15. Ted was hilarious. Really, really funny.

We missed some of lines because we were all laughing so hard. I envy you folks who see it in New England. Lots of 'local' flavor. I would actually see it again, a rarity for me who does not like to leave home anymore.

  16. Seth Macfarlane must have the most interesting life. Love to know what he is really like.

  17. My magic mike audience was way too subdued. Not a movie to take too seriously, but dayum Channing, that's why I love you. Also the movie needed some more Continually.

  19. Mamaroni, a prude showed up for the movie? I thought they were too busy posting on fb about how they are taking a stand Against such smut...hahaha

Plot - what did I miss?!? Lol definitely a must see for women - but any straight man that gets dragged into that theater is a first class idiot! Let your "woman" go and reap the benefits...

  21. I can't wait to see Magic Mike. Ted looks kind of funny but I can wait for it on TNT kind of funny ;-)

Magic Mike; that BEGS to be seen on the big screen, no?

  22. Ted is hilarious. Tears of laughter hilarious. Seth McFarlane does raunchy the best of anyone...it's always in context, somehow.

  25. I agree about the talent of Mr. MacFarlane, however, if I had his money I wouldn't waste time making movies at all, I'd just stay home rolling around naked in a giant pool of money while some oiled up cutie constantly pitched Milky Ways into my open mouth, like a baby bird waiting for a worm.

Then....you know....I'd use some more of my money to get liposuction...

  26. Hendrix you reminded me:

Freddy Quimby, to French waiter: "Say 'Chow-dah!'"

    French Waiter: "shau-derrr"

  27. The sister in Magic Mike reminded me and my friends of Kristen Stewart too! Especially the way she would always just stand there with her mouth open and stare.

I really liked Ted too. Both of these movies got my money this weekend.

  28. Alright, you all convinced me to see Magic Mike, and soon! I was on the fence, lol.

  29. I went to see Brave...Magic Mike wasn't playing at our local theater. I thought it was a great movie with a good message for young girls. But now I have a need to go see some eye candy.

  30. Brave was ok, but I've been waiting to see Magic Mike and Ted.

  31. Hooray for "Magic Mike"! I haven't even seen it but I love the idea of a movie with men getting naked instead of women. It's about freaking time. Glad it made $$$. I actually figured it would bomb.

  32. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't like Seth MacFarlane, but damn it I don't like Seth MacFarlane!

  33. @hamster party I don't like him either. I am not a fan of "Ha ha, watch me say disgusting and shocking things just for the sake of being disgusting and shocking" comedy.

  34. I love American Dad hope that show goes on and on. Family guy is way too preachy now. Let Seth do the voiceovers and leave writing to the writers

  36. @Hamster party and @krissie: count me in!! I just don't get it. My brother loves Family Guy and ive seen way too many of them but he is usually painfully unfunny. He goes for cheap' obvious laughs.

  37. I don't like Seth McFarlan either. I don't find him funny at all.

  38. Cody Horn, the girl in Magic Mike, was on The Office. She was very bland on there. I thought maybe she was one of those models who was venturing into actions and is terrible at it.

  39. My Mom group is headed to see Magic Mike on Thurs (our theater also has alcoholic beverages) and I can only imagine how rowdy it will get as we're all Moms with babies/toddlers at home in desperate need of a night out.

I really want to see Ted too - the red band trailer had me laughing hysterically, but that will have to wait until my niece comes to visit at the end of the month (babysitter!).

  40. I don't like Seth Macfarlane either, but to be fair, he doesn't write Family Guy any more, so he can't be blamed that it's gotten so much worse.

  41. I want to know where you guys that theaters serve alcohol live!! Beats bringing in those pre-made packets like I did.
