Penn State Officials Treated Abuse Victims In "Callous Way"
Penn State officials hired former FBI Director Louis Freeh to complete an internal investigation of what happened during the tenure of Jerry Sandusky and who knew what and when and how bad was it. It was pretty bad. The report says that for decades, top officials, including Joe Paterno knew what was going on and concealed it which let Sandusky run wild with young boys and knowing nothing was going to happen to him. Officials treated the victims like crap and didn't care what happened to them. Basically no one did anything until after Sandusky was arrested and then they all tried to cover their butts. Apparently it also showed that Paterno probably lied to the grand jury when he testified. Specifically he said he did not follow the 1998 investigation closely, but he actually did and still did nothing after the 1998 investigation to stop further molestations.
when this first came out, I KNEW that higher ups knew and had covered.Too much stuff not to. SAD, VILE and DISGUSTING.
ReplyDeleteForgot to say that I hope there's a special hell for them.
ReplyDeleteAwful! I'm so ashamed that PSU would rather keep its image respectable than help children that were being brutally raped. Its truly disgusting and I hope those in power are tried in a public forum by a jury of their peers.
ReplyDeleteJoPA is just as sick as Sanduskey, and all those Penn State fans chanting outside of JoPa's house in his defense after the news came out...you're a bunch of sick fucks as well.
ReplyDeleteHow could they? I don't understand how could they.
ReplyDeleteA sports radio host named Mark Madden from Pittsburgh wrote an article about Sandusky and PSUs cover up of the scandal a few weeks before all this went down originally. Gooogle it cause I'm in the car and can't but its a good read.
ReplyDeleterat bastards!!!
ReplyDelete$$$, pilly. They have to think of alumni donations and government money. There isn't a punishment good enough for Sandusky.
ReplyDeleteI hope this opens up all kinds of civil suits against the school.
The only thing where bad behavior gets a free pass in the country, other than the entertainment industry is professional sports.
ReplyDeleteAnd I say professional intentionally as even though is college sports, it's a multi-million dollar business too.
CNN has a very good summary of the report.
ReplyDelete"Further, they exposed this child to additional harm by alerting Sandusky, who was the only one who knew the child's identity, of what (Mike) McQueary saw in the shower on the night of February 9, 2001"
in trying to protect their legacys they destroyed them. Along with innocent children. Just disgusting.
ReplyDeleteagree with @tru its all about winning and presenting a false image.
Also, am I the only person with a big Hanes ad on their screen? I realize that it's coincidental, but it just seems tacky to have this guys bulging underwear right next to the picture of Sandusky.
ReplyDeleteAre any of them going to be charge or fired?
ReplyDeleteDisgusting POS's, all of them. This morning my brother said they should just "blow up" Penn State (meaning fire everyone involved, no matter how peripherally) and start over. I agree. That nasty McQeary ought to be charged as well. He knew abuse was going on firsthand and said nothing in exchange for a job. Douchebag.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who's not surprised about this? In every Lifetime movie where the sports team is raping the cheerleaders, the school always sides with and protects the sports team and tries to keep it quiet. It's completely wrong, but not at all surprising.
ReplyDeleteNot surprised, sadly. Wonder where all the JoPa supporters are now?
ReplyDeleteVicki, I think there will be plenty of civil suits-rightfully so!
According to a CNN article:
ReplyDelete"In 2010, Sandusky requested to work as an unpaid football coach at Juniata College after retiring from Penn State in 1999, authorities said.
A school background check turned up an investigation into the former defensive coordinator as well as a "do not hire" warning, prompting Juniata College officials to reject Sandusky's interest in the program, they said."
This whole situation just disgusts me. Every single one of those people involved in covering up his activities is complicit in the abuse of those children.
It is time for Penn State to be banned by the NCAA from any and all Tv coverage, championships, playoff's for any athletic or academic team for a minimum of 10 years. If the NCAA can put a hurt on schools for their recruiting tactics-cars, parties, houses for parents ( still looking at you Reggie Bush)-there is no reason why they cannot do this. If it was about the money then, then take it away now.
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad Paterno, that skanky old fake, lived long enough to see his cherished image go up in flames and know that he was going to be revealed and reviled. Ha.
ReplyDeleteThis story puts me in a white hot rage which I know I've voiced several times on this page.
ReplyDeleteI'll say again, the NCAA and Big Ten need to sanction Penn State in a big way, namely by tossing PSU out of the NCAA and Big Ten for a minimum of 10 years. It is the only consequence that will send a message far and deep to this school and others that the fucking sports program does NOT trump the lives of children and basic human decency.
@Moosefan, you're so right. The ONLY penalty that will really sink in here is financial.
ReplyDeletethis shit is just the tip of the iceberg.
ReplyDeletedig further
here's a hint....just think of how many DA's, judges, and legislators within this state are Penn State alumni, an go from there.
AND @Little Miss! Lots of great minds thinking alike here today.
ReplyDeleteVIPblonde, I agree. I was sexually assaulted by another student and the school sided with him. The cunt dean of women told me to my face that I should have expected it since we had been "friends". This is also the same Christian school that made a girl quit because she was date-raped on campus and gave the rapist (a football player) a scholarship.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that happened to you. It amazes me the amount of assauts and abuses that schools get away with covering up.
Delete@vicki - I am SO sorry you go through this. This blame the victim BS needs to stop! Thanks for sharing your story. Only by speaking out will things change. Big hug to you!
DeleteSorry this happened to you and pissed as hell that cunt dean did not protect you. Have you ever thought about looking her up and confronting her on why she did that?
Delete@Moosefan GMTA
ReplyDelete@figgy word!
ReplyDelete@Vicki that is so horrible and I am so sorry you had to go through that.
ReplyDelete@rejectedcarebear....what madden said was that there were rumors that kids were being pimped out to the highest donors (or possibly even just donors) of the Second Mile org. Now note, it can be found on pdf files online, but note which county within the state gave THE most routinely to Second Mile, as I feel, that's where this investigation really needs to head.
ReplyDelete@vicki - oh no. I am so sorry. I hope you are ok now.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Sandusky, I'd like to know what happened to the DA from the grand jury that disappeared.
I agree. Penn State's sports programs need to be suspended - immediately.
ReplyDeleteI hope that the lawsuits against the school end up crippling them and I am not a pro-lawsuit type of person.
What a bunch of morally reprehensible people...ugh!
p.s. (and lastly) I think this had far more to do with the simple fact that poor, "disenfranchised" children of minorities or single mother's are simply, deemed less than here. I fear it has less to do with football and more to do with just the state's wealthy wanting to get sex from kids. Plain and simple. And they justified it by telling themselves and each other, that in the meantime (when they weren't and aren't raping the kids) that they are showing them a "better life," a.k.a the finer things by taking them to restaurants, their homes, vacations, etc. football games, etc.
ReplyDeletesad, but true.
As soon as paterno signed all financials to his wife, I took that as a sign he knew the shit was going to hit the fan fast and hard. excuse my language. the whole thing is disgusting. the trial was disgusting. since when is it kosher to cross examine a witness as if they were the ones on trial???
ReplyDeleteAdd me to the list of utterly disgusted & totally unsurprised :( I hope civil suits drain (literally) ever penny from that school's accounts.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the only thing that will surprise me is if Penn actually does receive some kind of punishment, instead of a few "sacrificial lambs" from the admin to pacify the public, & then back to business as usual >:(
Just before this whole thing came to light, I remember watching an ESPN special about college teams who have never had serious investigations, wrongdoings, warnings, etc. by NCAA. Penn State was the only major college listed. I remember saying "That's because JoPa won't take that shit!"
ReplyDeleteAnd to think this was going on...something so terrible it can't even be compared to buying cars or apartments for your athletes.
I don't think I've ever judged someone SO incorrectly. :(
I recall a part of an interview Paterno did after all this came out and he said he 'never heard of sex with another man before'. Really????
ReplyDeleteThat comment, that total denial that man on man sex even existed was the most blatant lie I have ever heard from a grown man's mouth.
Sick bastard cared more football and his image above human life belonging to children.
@Vicki So very, very sorry to hear what happened to you. You make this site a fun place to come to every day. A big virtual hug to hug to you.
DeleteI agree with posts re: the suggested Penn sanctions. I haven't read this report yet but follwed the Sandusky trial closely and Joe Pa made me sick as well. I was a victim of child sex abuse (though female). Those that cover up and defend the actions of the abusers are just as guilty IMO. I think McQueary got immunity in exchange for his testimony. Sandusky's attorney should be sanctioned for his reprehensible behavior on camera (and off camera as well).
@Ms Cool would like to know as well
@dizzy eggs and @joymama totally agree
@ omama Co-sign
Thanks, guys. While I have an unnatural hatred of Albanian men (he was Albanian; really, they're fucking assholes. The women are super sweet, but the dudes...jesus) and the church of Christ (for that and other reasons), I'm pretty much over it. I wasn't raped, just violated.
ReplyDeleteOmama, your post about Madden and what you said about minority kids makes me sick. You're right, but it's no less sickening. :(
Vicki, what the FUCK???????
ReplyDelete*hugs*
I saw an article that PSU got more alumni donations than ever this year. People suck.
My inner Avenger wants some serious justice for those boys and young men that had their lives ruined. I hope they get a huge chunk of the Penn State pie. Hey alumnus, where do you think your $$$ will go now?
ReplyDelete@omama - there is so much truth to what you said that my inner alarm bells are going off. This was hidden for so long and so many people knew that it will be a big mess. Will anyone actually get in trouble or go to jail besides Sandysky, probably not.
Sanctions!!!! I want them to sanction the shit out of that school. The irony is this - by not stopping it early on bc it would hurt the school a little, they let it destroy the whole thing. Would you go to that school now or give them any $$$? Nope, no fucking way!
I read an article on one either CNN or MSNBC or Fox this morning where an editorial writer was calling for the NCAA "death penalty" for Penn State. At least one season would be cancelled. They should AT LEAST do this - and I'm all for the other punishments others above have mentioned. Too bad we can't dig Paterno up and try him.
ReplyDelete@Vicki - you remind me of some movie (I can't remember the name) with Peter Falk and Keanu Reeves, in which Falk has an ongoing hatred of Albanians. Funny movie.
@cathy FYI - the ads are specialized for your browser. They're based on recent on-line activity (like, if I am looking on overstock, the rotating ads on other sites I view will likely be for items I recently viewed on overstock or other similar sites.) I'm not saying you've been looking at men's underwear ads! (and wouldn't judge you if you were :)
ReplyDeleteI'm originally from the east coast and worked with this woman who was a PSU alumni. She was a self righteous bitch! I'm a Christian! My school is amazing! The lions are the best football team in the universe!
ReplyDeleteI sooo want to send her a Charlize Theron note right now! WWCTD? Send a bitchy note!
Vicki, that is horrible. I always felt that people end up paying one way or another.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Dia! At least post something on her Facebook page if you can.
ReplyDeleteOops..sorry about the reply part. My phone is not behaving.
ReplyDeleteVicki, I hope kharma has served all of those assholes what they deserve!
ReplyDeleteOmama, I really think what you say is true. So many minority and at risk youth have been exploited, and it just goes to show how some people in power see this segment of our society. They see them as less than human and at their mercy.
Add me to the list of others who want PSU sanctioned heavily and kicked out of the Big Ten. As in permanently.
ReplyDeleteSo disgusting.
Where's Daniel Tosh's joke about this?
ReplyDeleteSick fucks - at least Sandusky is getting part of what he deserves in prison. I doubt the other inmates think highly of him.
I've said this before and will say again...I hope Sandusky is put in a cell with a roomful of well endowed sodomites who hate pedephiles. Then some true justice will commence.
ReplyDeleteNow that you've read the report Enty, can we expect any changes in how you handle the reports you receive of child abuse? i.e., instead of writing a blind about them, pressing your sources to contact authorities or doing so yourself? Or do you see this as one more story to gossip about with no connection or relevance to the alleged child abuse still continuing (per your stories) in your own backyard?
ReplyDeleteThis whole case is a metaphor about how in America $$$ will always take priority over liberty. Like we read in the blinds everyday, it's the entertainment industry, the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry, and even the government. More and more it seems that the welfare or rights of a criminal matter more than the victim. How ridiculous is it that Sandusky will receive 3 meals a day and healthcare in prison while many of America's seniors can barely afford it. And that is my rant for today.
ReplyDelete@Unknown, how do you know that Enty doesn't already do those things? Maybe he writes the posts in addition to the other things, to draw more attention to them.
ReplyDeleteJust a different way to look at things...
I'm not sure that I agree about minorities/poor boys being targeted because they're less "in power". I think it's because these perverts go after boys who have no father figure in their lives, and statistically, minority and poor children have less contact with their fathers. Kids with a strong father figure are a lot harder to groom, since they know what a proper father/son relationship is like (usually) and because they are less desperate to have a "father figure" in their lives.
ReplyDelete@Vicki - I'm so sorry to hear what you went through, but am glad you're in a better place now.
ReplyDeleteOthers have expressed so well my exact thoughts. Karma will always get you in the end.
Paterno's lucky he died when he did.
ReplyDeleteNah, what's the point? She's in Arkansas and I'm in Mass. Also, she wouldn't remember something as trivial as telling a poor female student that it was her fault a guy wouldn't stop grabbing her breasts even while she was telling him to stop. She would just say, "Well, I'm human and we all make mistakes. If you were a good Christian, you would forgive and forget."
ReplyDeleteThen I would probably snap and go Dexter on her ass and I just can't be bothered.
Glad you've been so strong and healthy about it. I too was molested as a young girl, by a former brother in law. He wanted me to friend him on fb. I sick and stunned when I saw it but after a couple of weeks I replied 'why would I add you? So you can publicly apologize for what you did? You remember, don't you? You lied to my sister so she'd stay because of the kids. Is that why you sent a request?' never heard back from him and he deactivated his account. He ended abandoning his family and no one talks to him so he was majorly sick to send me that. Fucker---I totally felt better.
DeleteWhy punish the students?
ReplyDeleteFire everyone involved, no pension/ retirement, and vacate every win from Paterno's record since McQueary.
Is there a phone number, address, email etc etc that we can post to get the NCAA to look at banning/sanctions? I remember after everything came to light, and there was a candlelight vigil and people wearing the same shirts. Where are they now? Where is the outrage now, knowing that their "beloved" JoPa knew EVERYTHING? I wish that there was a way so that at every home game there were people, holding silent protest, with signs that said "Remember the victims that were sacrificed for YOUR title".
ReplyDeleteWow, Joymama. I'm glad confronting him helped. I'm sorry you had to go through that shit.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school, my brother may have molested me in my sleep. I only say may, because I'm such a heavy sleeper I wouldn't have noticed and I would wake up with my door wide open. I would have to barricade my door with everything in my room. Once my mother came home from work and knocked on my window to let her in because she didn't have a house key for some reason. I had to move everything away from my door and when she asked me why my door was blocked, I told her so my brother wouldn't come in. She got mad and told me to stop blocking my door because what if there was a fire, etc.
She babies him so much that my sister and I call him GI for Giant Infant.
But that's a can of rotten worms I'd rather not open.
They can't "cancel" their retirement/pensions, because Penn State is a state school. Retirement accounts are handled by the state employee retirement system (I've been in Texas's for 12 years now, working at a state school here), not the university itself.
ReplyDeleteI say get rid of the football program (at least temporarily), fire everyone involved, and have the NCAA let football players transfer to other schools without having to sit out a year. Just start over with a completely clean slate.
The Penn State board of Trustees is very carefully taking some amount of blame.
ReplyDeleteI hope the guys who testified get a huge settlement and that the school just comes to an agreement about the amount without going to court.
When this story first broke I did not understand why little kids were taking showers at a college. How awful that they let Sandusky have access to Penn State after he was retired.
Burn in hell, JoPa, you sick old fucker.
ReplyDeleteThe term "Company Man" will forever now have a sickening ring to it, in my ears.
Curley, Schultz and Spannier must be crapping themselves right now...
I keep catching myself hoping that Sandusky is repeatedly gang raped in prison and then I realize I'm acting like just the monster he is. I don't see him having remorse ever, all I can think of is hoping nobody stoops to his level thinking that making Sandusky suffer will right his wrongs. I'd be fine with him in solitary the rest of his life, or a quick death. I even hope a prisoner doesn't think that bc he commited such an awful crime to never get out of prison why not torture and kill Sandusky and make the world "happier". I can't read the stories about what he did bc it makes me too sick. I just know I hate American football and the culture around it. In highschool (and how many others?) the football players were treated differently.
ReplyDeleteVicki, regarding the comment about your brother. Have you asked him whether he did or not?
ReplyDeletefuck Sandusky and fuck JoPa.
ReplyDelete@vicky <>
I say start twittering or facebooking or whatever the young people are doing nowadays (hey, get off of my lawn!), and demand that the NCAA sanction Penn State by kicking them out of the NCAA/Big 10 and no championships for 10 years. or whatever. Use the hashtags. trend that shit. Retweet to whomever. Social network the fuck outta this.
People ain't gonna care until it hurts their wallet and that's the truth. And the sad truth is the NCAA probably isn't gonna do much unless they see that Joe Q. Public gives a shit. "Uh-Oh, we better take an action on this issue, it's becoming a THING. God help us if the perception is that we did nothing, we need to keep our sponsors and donors happy!"
that was weird, there was supposed to be a hug for vicky in there...
ReplyDeleteNinja Hug!!!
Sylvia, you literally can not believe a word he says. Asking him anything would be giving him ammunition.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the next time I want to see him is when he's choking to death on his own vomit or in a diabetic comas so I can unplug his life support myself.
Enablers make me want to breathe nuclear fire and shoot lava out of my eyeballs. Sandusky may have been an evil predator, but on at least one level, I can SOMETIMES think of him as a poor, sick, twisted fuck stuck on his own illness.
ReplyDeleteBut what's the excuse for the enablers? Obsession? Compulsion? Horrible mental illness they couldn't control? Or craven, calculated choices to throw poor, disadvantaged children who "didn't matter" under the bus so that they could continue to be Big Important Men? (And in this case, yes, it was all men.)
Fuckers. Nuclear fire and lava. Godzilla, watch and learn, baby.
I'm surprised its only reported they covered up the last 14 years or whatever, because there is NO way Sandusky only started doing this in his 50s. He probably started in his twenties. I hope this sick fuck gets abused and hurt by all the other prision inmates.
ReplyDeleteVicki, you're awesome.
ReplyDeleteYour story reminded me of my former best friend. We were inseparable from the age of 15; he was way more of a sibling than my blood siblings. We were super-close, but we always dated other people.
After 12 years of being VERY close friends, he freaked out after his fiancee dumped him--and he tried to rape me. It was only 5 minutes of fighting off his pinning me down, and I'm lucky he was WAY out of shape.
This is the F*CKED UP part---I blacked out the memory, and within a few weeks, I was hanging out & talking to him every day, all over again. For like 5 years after. One day toward the end of our friendship, it all flooded back to me. I couldn't deal with him anymore after that.
We were so close for so long. He was my only friend for many years. I don't miss him, because now I've blacked out 99% of the 17 years we were friends, and the attempt is all I can associate him with now.
I hope he reads this blog. This is my real name; he knows exactly who I am. Fuck you, Kevin.
Vicki that's horrible, sorry you had no support especially your mum, you are one brave, cool lady.
ReplyDeleteLibby have you ever looked into the blackout thing and why we do it? I think I have some hazy memories I keep pushing under and they scare me. Kevin blew a good friendship, bet he regrets it now.
These people make me sick.
ReplyDeleteastrogirl---I have no idea how the blackouts happen, but I've remembered quite a few awful things in the past few years. I had actually forgotten about what Kevin did, a second time, until recently.
ReplyDeleteI also recently re-remembered several DV episodes from childhood (one involving a stabbing)---it's the therapist I have now. He's the best ever, getting to the core in stealthy, secret medical ways.
If you can't remember a trauma, you can never heal it. It poisons your head, even though you don't realize it's there. Really scary in a way, because I'm on alert now that I may remember something else, any minute.
I don't mean to sound so grim, though. Finally remembering & dealing with this stuff is a total positive.
Thanks for your kind words though. I love CDAN commenters---the BEST!
Libby not grim, your advice is spot on and I thank you for opening up and allowing me to see your vulnerability and draw strength from it.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about this place. It's very liberating to totally be yourself and find like minded (and not) people, you can share with.
Big hugs to those of you who have gone through grievous attacks on your person. Am inspired and in awe of all of you.
ReplyDeleteIn response to why didn't anyone say anything, most people won't say anything when a meal is cold, a co-worker is being bullied etc. Let's all try and be the change we want to see in the world.
I hope the victims sue the high holy hell out of Penn State, and JoPas estate......and anyone else who had anything to do with turning a blind eye all those years...
ReplyDeleteCosign - exactly what FERALTART said.
ReplyDelete@feraltart....very well said. I thank you.
And indeed, to all the survivors, bless you all.
It took an independent investigation to discover all of this? Most of the world suspected as much but this is very far reaching. I am still awaiting some brave older men to come forward to say that Sandusky did this to them 20/30 years ago. Sadly, this has probably been going on for decades. I agree with Omama and the rest who believe a minimum 10 years ban from the big ten is a START! Disgusting!
ReplyDeleteESPN had info on the scandal but did not react or report it.
ReplyDeleteIt was a female reporter, originally from Broward County, FL, 24-Year-Old Sara Ganim who won the Pulitzer Prize for exposing Penn State Scandal.
Good ol' boy network got tripped up by a female - now that's news.
Vicki Cupper, truly sorry you had that experience.
ReplyDeleteThank God (or no god) for your wonderful sense of humor !
what's the difference between this incident and the hidden pedhophilia that run unchecked in hollywood ?
ReplyDeletethese incident in Penn is just a small drop compared to whats happening in hollywood..
or did people give the hollywood pedhopiles a pass ?
@omama
ReplyDeleteI think that's what happened to the DA who disappeared! I think he found out what a cesspool Penn State was. I think Sandusky is acutally a pimp as well as a monster.
Hello all, popping out of my self imposed lurker exile.
ReplyDeleteBut there are still asshole people in the area that feel JoePa was the 2nd coming of Christ. My MIL says last night He did the best he could, why didn't those kids tell? I'm like THEY ARE VICTIMS! One kid told his guidance counselor and the GC told him he must have been mistaken cause Jerry Sandusky is a great man. This whole situation makes my ass itch you guys just don't know how bad! I think there is way more hidden in this dark closet---This Governor (who I did not vote for) needs to be ousted! I wanna see an audit of his files. I think he let it slide while he was AG. Sorry everybody but UGH! just drives nuts.
I was watching NBC Nightly News this morning on my way to work and Bob Costas was still trying to paint him as a saint. It was sickening and v. disappointing.
ReplyDeleteUn fucking believable.
>>>VIPblonde said...
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that happened to you. It amazes me the amount of assauts and abuses that schools get away with covering up.<<<
I just saw this. You have no idea. That school had a habit of settling everything "in house." If you were attacked, mugged, robbed, violated, etc., you had to go through security. You weren't allowed to call the cops and you were strongly discouraged from calling the cops after talking to security.
Also after I talked to the dean, she threatened to suspend me for a semester because I had missed chapel one too many times.
That's how Christian schools roll. They're private so they can do whatever the fuck they want to you. All in the name of the lord.
Penn State should be sued into bankruptcy. I keep reading things about how the PS students and teachers should not be made to "suffer," but hey - did anyone read their spirited defenses of Paterno and Sandusky when this crap first went down? RIGHT. Their university came first - who cared about a bunch of poor abused kids?
ReplyDeleteI say: sue their disgusting asses into the ground. They deserve no less.
@Vicky...not just Christian, avante garde schools as well. Google CEDU/The Amity school (I'm a survivor of the amity school and our headmaster was a pedophile. You do not even want to know what went on there, oh yeah, and it wasn't even in our country).
ReplyDeleteMy point, anywhere adults have too much power over children, this is bound to happen.
