Girl Jumps Out Of Chair Lift

This teen thought she was going to be struck by lightning so she jumped 35 feet out of the chair because she thought a broken leg would be better. What choice would you make? She is fine by the way.

  1. she was very, very lucky to only get bruised up. I think she should of stayed where she was but there is no rationalizing with teenagers sometimes.

  4. i would have jumped. lightening seems to seek me out (3 close calls) and NO WAY i would have sat there waiting.

  5. I'm absolutely terrified of lightning. I think my fear of falling is even stronger, though.

  6. Been caught in too many lightning storms, and know way too many people who have been electrocuted. I would have probably done the same

  7. What an attention whore.

  8. Way to abandon your seatmate to the lightning bolts, ha.

I'd say her chances of actually getting hit are pretty small, as she's just one of many cars, whereas jumping is certain injury.

    Dumb choice.

  9. I'm terrified of sky lifts. Hate anything that leaves my feet dangling. Add to that the storm, the ride stopping, the thunder and lightning..I'm afraid I'd jump, too.

  10. I think electrocution would be preferable to potentially breaking my neck and living in a wheelchair for the rest of my days. I would think electrocution would kill me quicker......I’d hope!

  11. No way I could jump.
The odds of being struck by lighting are what?
Either option is scary to me.

  12. Someone did get struck by lightning in the same storm. Depending on how bad the storm was, I might have jumped too. Lightning strikes are scary stuff.

  13. OMG you all are so funny! 'what an attention whore.' Im laughing so hard right now!!!! Did you mean that to be funny? Thats got to be the best response ever.
I would not jump. I would hope I was sitting next to someone who knew how to put a sleeper hold on me. But like someone said, struck by lightning or pushing a wheelchair around with your tongue for the rest of your life? Electrocution for the win. I wonder how many people get struck by lightning on ski lifts every year?

  14. Isn't it all connected by metal? She didn't have to be directly hit to be electrocuted.

  15. Was the ski lift moving? I actually cannot take the stress of watching the video. Reminds me of that horror movie, whatever it was traumatized me. I would have stayed on but would have voided my bowels early on and continuously.

    1. The lift was stalled bc the power went out on the lift.

  17. @missypoppypants - Are you talking about Frozen? The movie where the people sneak on a ski lift and get stuck up there all weekend? Reminded me of that too. ::shudder::

  18. She should've stayed. The metal chair and cables would've routed any static electricity to the ground.

I do understand not thinking calmly and rationally in that situation, though.

The odds of getting struck by lighting sre like one in 600,000 whereas gettig killed by lightning is one in 4 million.

I was struck by lightning when I was 8 years old. In Spokane WA where there are enough lightning storms to warrant a lightning rod in my aunts back yard. I was sitting at her kitchen table and apparently the lightning hit the rod, bounced off , went through the sliding glass door next to the kitchen table, hits me and continues out through the living room window. I saw non of this .. I only remember a bright flash then waking up on the kitchen floor with my mom, grandma and aunt standing over me.

I like to attribute my general overall weirdness to that situation but I'm pretty sure I was weird before that day.

  21. @frug..yeah, thanks, Frozen. The dudes get eaten by wolves... that didnt bother me as much as the girl saying, 'my cat will think I left him on purpose.' Left.

  22. Alicia, great take on life. I'm glad you came through it ok (if a little weird).

I do know someone who was killed in a lightning storm. They'd been camping and decided to quickly dismantle the tent and drive to safety. Lightning hit the tent post in his hand, and his family tried CPR but there was no hope. Also before the days of cellphones. Horrifying. So these storms scare me. Still, I'd stay put because while a probable injury or death (from falling) is better than a more certain injury or death (from lightning), the chance of the lightning strike is slim. Even though the odds hits someone at some point. Scary all around.

  23. 0_0 I don't think her fear was static electricity but a full on strike by lightning. Static electricity is pretty benign.

  24. That was beyond terrifying, but she was at much higher risk of serious injury or death by jumping.

My cousin was killed by a strike while golfing. They had warning alarms, but the storm was moving too fast.

  25. Heh, I think things like that are most likely grounded no? Unless she was perhaps thinking she'd be hit directly?

Interesting dilemma nonetheless: what would you do if stuck between a rock and a hard spot, lesser of two evils, etc. Hard to say for me, I'd have to be in the moment I think.

    Glad she wasn't seriously injured.

  26. That movie Frozen was sooooo disturbing! That's the kind where you can't sleep afterwards because you know you're going to have nightmares.

I never took physics, but would the lightning hurt her badly if she wasn't grounded? I mean, it would hit a pole, not her, and disperse, right? Yeah, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

  27. Many people have a lightning-phobia, an intense and irrational fear of being struck by lightning. I think she is neither wise nor a dumb-ass, just very very frightened and with little impulse control. Glad to hear she's alive, actually.

  28. @Alicia: That'll do it! Remember Caddyshack, when the bishop was struck by lightning when he refused to stop playing during the storm?
