Anderson Cooper Comes Out

In an article up on The Daily Beast by Andrew Sullivan, Andrew shares a letter from Anderson Cooper about sexuality and how people in the public eye are much more restrained about their sexuality even after they have come out. He then shares a letter from Anderson Cooper to Andrew which states, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

I'm proud of Anderson Cooper for finally coming forward and sharing this with the public. Anderson is an amazing guy. Plus, he is the best talk show guest ever. (Thanks Andrew)

  5. It's about time. Maybe he'll inspire some others to do the same. People should be who they were born to be. Can I get an amen.

  6. Awesomeness. Love this guy, much admiration and respect.

  7. Michael K is the author of dlisted.com, another pretty good gossip site. He LOOOOOVVVESSS Anderson Cooper, calls him "mah boo".

  8. He was very funny on Kathy G's new show. He's had a fascinating life. Would love to see that fire station that he bought in NY and renovated.

  9. @auntliddy, Michael K is a blogger who runs the D-Listed website, he LOVES AC and refers to him as 'Mah Boo'

  10. Amen. It sucks that it's news, but Anderson is right.

I can't wait for the day when it isn't news.

  14. Good for him who cares if he is straight or gay he is an amazing human being.

  15. I'm not really sure Cooper was "in" the closet, but good for him for making it official to the general public.

@auntliddy I so agree with you. Ten years ago, it WAS important when someone came out because it did help society adjust their thinking a little bit. Now I am glad to see that some people (such as yourself) don't think it is a big deal.

  16. I'm happy he's happy. He really is a nice guy and I want the best for him.

  18. Basil, he was 'in' to the same people who were shocked that Ricky Martin is gay, that Tom and Katie are getting a divorce, and that these horrible men are telling lies about lovely John Travolta. :)

  19. Good for him, but it's not really anyone's business but Anderson and his partner!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. @FS Couldn't have said it better myself.

    ReplyDelete
  21. the difference is being fine with acknowledging and taking partners to events like most straight people do. Matt Bomer hasn't done the 'I'm gay' thing.. just acknowledged his partner and family. Many gay people hide their partners which is kind of being in the closet to me.

  22. The only thing that's sad about this is us heteros have no chance with him... lol Way to go Anderson!!!

  23. Good for him!!!

I have a good friend who is still in the closet and almost 50!!!! The fear of judgement and rejection is very strong. My hope one day that it just WON'T MATTER to anyone. Love IS Love

  24. I love AC! I believe that coming out is not something that anyone in the LGBT community has an obligation to do, actually. If they want to be private about it, that's their business.

That said, when they DO come out, I'm REALLY happy for them, and it gives me hope for the young people, the closeted, the ashamed. I'm happy that those who can't yet come out can see that they ARE supported by SO many. To quote Harvey Milk, you gotta give 'em hope.

  25. Good for him. The interview was beautiful, I love the way he worded everything.

    I love that man.

  26. Gay, straight, upside down- this dude is gorgeous and classy...love when he gets the giggles...and I think I just heard Michael K explode....

  27. @angel, thanks. Now that's unique:)

  28. I would like to come out as straight.

  29. @AKM,

You said everything I wanted to and beautifully, too ;>. Good for AC!

  30. So... now I have to go and visit MichaelK :-)

  31. good for Anderson:)

  32. I'm so happy for him. It's one thing if you don't know and aren't ready to commit to either side (and why do we feel forced to commit to a side anyways?) but he knew, and I guess? was afraid to announce it. I know someone in the closet and I can't imagine having to be constantly on your guard protecting your precious secret, which isn't a big deal to most people. Aren't most of us just like, oh, ok, I thought so, hey John I won the bet! That's it. No big deal.

  33. And on Lindsay Lohan's birthday, no less.

  34. Michael D just blogged on D List.

    Here's just the title :

"Happy Silver Fox Coming Out Day, Everyone!"

    It's a funny read.

  35. Hopefully this means people can stop talking about his orientation now, and focus on how awesome he is.

In my mind, I have some celebrity friends. AC is one of them, he's such a sweetheart. And witty to boot.

Good for him. All that matters is if he's happy.

  37. Right on, Amber.
I suppose I’ll have to give up on waiting for Mah Boo to jiggie with my breasticles!

  38. I'm happy he did it on his own terms, but I agree with Vicki. I hope one days this won't be news. I don't think he was ever in the closet, he just kept his personal life separate from his professional.

He is a journalist and most likely doesn't want to be reported on.

  39. Is sam shepard of fox news next?

    ReplyDelete
  40. As soon as I heard about this I ran over to Dlisted to see Michael's response!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Supapimp, you mean Shepherd Smith? I can't see Sam Shepherd a)working at Fox "News" and b)coming out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is so important.

I'm sorry that any gay person in the public eye "has" to answer the question at one time or another - AC has a great point, private lives are private lives - but telling the truth about it in a proud way is exactly the kind of thing we need to get people to accept that gay is normal and not something to be ashamed of or hidden or lied about. That is the only way the world will change, and ridiculously public sham marriages like Travolta (and Tom/Katy?) will exist to destroy the lives of those in them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Hendrix - Very well put. I'm on the fence about people having to or feeling like they have to come out, but I'm glad he did it on his own terms.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm also shocked he was considered in the closet. I thought he just didn't talk about his life so the audience could view him as unbiased and just focus on the news stories he was saying.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He just accelerated a few more rungs up my "hotness chart"

    ReplyDelete
  46. He dumps this news on the 4th of July week in the shadow of Tom & Katie's divorce (which was dumped in the shadow of one of the biggest Supreme Court rulings in history). Good job Anderson, dump it in the shadow of a holiday week, a big celebrity divorce, and a huge court ruling - no one will bat an eye.

  47. Good for him! Love that man!

  48. Amazing guy? Anyone who has spent five minutes with him knows AC is a raging egomaniac a-hole who treats everyone around him like a lesser being.

Sure, he's cute. But cute is as cute does. McSpanky doesn't care what his sexual orientation is because he'll never be allowed past the McSpanks.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Excellent! I hope this inspires others. And also hope I live to see the day this isn't newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's about time; good for him. I wonder how CNN feels about this, as they were a large part of why he didn't say anything before (it's all about demographics & ratings). And he is a very good, generous person; I have a relative that can vouch for that.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Mcspanky. If he had the attitude you describe I think he would have been called out about it a long time ago. He used to host The Mole for goodness sake and it was clearly obvious he was having a blast and interacting with the players all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  52. He wasn't out already?

I first saw him on the Channel One morning news program/time waster in high school. Ooh and Serena Altschul was on there too. Serena Altschul...<3...*drools*

  53. I play for the other team, but I love Mah Boo just like MK. Classy guy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My husband is very distantly related to him. Our son has silver fox blood pumping through his veins!

    ReplyDelete
  55. That takes a lot of courage. I, too, wish people didn't have to 'come out' - but too many gays are being persecuted, so it helps if prominent, respected personalities come out. Good for you, AC, though I think almost everyone who doesn't have their heads up their asses already knew this.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Agent**It, I too love renovated firehouses. Maybe we can now see more pics...AC seems like a good guy. He grew up in a family that had sooo many issues, but w/a mother who probably was finally "found" through her sons. (Little Girl Lost - story about his mom.)

Side note - the first show I have EVER watched on MTV is Awkward , and the season premiere was right after Snookie and JWoww. Looks like they moved into an old firehouse too - though I am sure all the charm is lost w/those 2-4 living there...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Snowstorms- do you like awkward? I caught the marathon last week while I was sick and I thought it was hilarious. Not perfect but I watched every episode lol

    ReplyDelete
  58. @rejectedcarebear, YES! I wasn't allowed to watch MTV as a kid, so while I miss the all video days, I never watched Real World. My niece came to visit and so she had it on. I started 3 wks in and was hooked...lol looking forward to this season. Now I know at least one other person who watches it, yea!!!!! :-)

  59. Love Anderson. Good for him on official coming out when he felt it was right for him. He really didn't try to hide it. He is always out and about with his boyfriend here in NYC. Now people can stop speculating and focus on his reporting. Soooo, Jakey G are you taking notes on how to come out quietly?

    ReplyDelete
  60. "I'm proud of Anderson Cooper for finally coming forward and sharing this with the public"
Wow, what a condescending statement. I doubt AC gives a damn if some yahoo gossip site moderator is proud.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I read that this was coming sometime earlier this year and that it would be part of his talk show--timed during sweeps.

I am glad he didn't use this to get ratings--he is in repeats now.

I knew he was gay and didn't need a public announcement but I hope it comes from the right place and that it does him and others some good.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Loved his email response.

@Agent**It - That whole interview was so funny. I was dying laughing when he was talking about reading his mom's book. And him calling her out for being such a snob about not having a chef. :)

  63. @ Lelaina Pierce - they should be hilarious together when they do their New Year's Eve broadcast.
