It wasn't so much bands when I was in high school as it was singers and groups. That said...Elvis. Followed closely by the Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, the Platters, the Drifters and Connie Francis.
Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. I was a Simon LeBon girl. It's amazing how I can turn to almost any women my age, ask which Duran member she was a fan of, and get a legit answer back. By the end of high school, I had moved on to Kate Bush, who will always be a favorite.
It's tough to name only one, but if I had to name the biggest one for me in 10th/11th grade, it would be Gene Loves Jezebel...broke into their hotel room and the whole nine yards. I still have Jay's hair and Michael's shoes, lol.
Third Eye Blind. I thought they were the hottest shit on the planet. Still try and catch them when they come around. Have a special place in my heart for Pearl Jam too. Met my love because of them.
Dead Milkmen, Ramones, early Red Hot Chili Peppers, Squeeze, the Police, Van Halen 5150 album (that one was boy-related). Also Depeche Mode and Erasure. Ooh, Yaz!
U2. If I could shag the Bono of the late 1970s/1980s, I totally would and Larry Mullen Jr. (the drummer) is freakin' dreamy. Disclaimer - I graduated high school in 1994, but the old school U2 has always had my heart.
And Prince....good lord, Purple Rain the album (showing my age saying that) . I marched right into the theater to see the movie. Back then, they didn't really card you for R rated movies.
Incubus. Still like them, but there is no feeling that compares to being 14-15 and falling in love with a band. You never feel that again for music like youdo when you're a teen discovering your tastes and favorite musicians. At least I think so. Still find new bands I really like, but it was just a different feeling, a passion.
I saw John Waite last fall and he did Head First and Midnight Rendezvous. I've got a video of it up on Youtube. He's so freaking awesome! The Babys were so freaking awesome!
Meatloaf. "Bat out of Hell" is the only album I've purchased in every medium since its release: 8-track, vinyl, cassette, CD, and iTunes. Best driving music ever.
Back to 60's early 70's. Motown, the Four Tops, Temps, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, then throw in some rock and roll Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne, Steely Dan, Beach Boys. Remember when "Pet Sounds" came out. Now, I'm gonna end up playing music all the rest of the day.
Wow, Enty, were you spying on me last night? I totally took a trip down Memory Lane, listening to music on Youtube from my youth and watching videos that were huge back when MTV was actually all about music videos and not Snookis. I got very nostalgic and a little sad. My life sure didn't work out remotely close to what I dreamed of then!
I was a teenager in the 80's, and looooved Duran Duran in junior high school, but had moved on from them somewhat by high school. I didn't really have one favorite then, but I'll just throw out Madonna because I really loved her. I saw her in concert when the Beastie Boys opened for her (the Virgin tour) and I remember I was rocking the whole lace and big hair slut look for the concert. I'm surprised my mother let me out of the house. Good times.
Almost anything from the 80s: Def Leppard, Poison, Night Ranger (you know you still sing the song when it's comes on), Joy Division, Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, U2, Gene Loves Jezebel
By the way, I doubt anyone cares enough to piece this together but just in case ... I commented on another post about being deaf and if you saw that and saw my post here you might possibly wonder how I could/can enjoy music if deaf, and that is thanks to a high-powered hearing aid I wear in my right ear (and now a new cochlear implant in my left ear). I don't want to be accused of being a troll fabricating stories! :P
I LOVED grunge, especially Alice In Chains. Plus, I remember listening to Pantera, Primus and Faith No More a lot and lots and lots of R&B and hip hop. Bubblegum pop wasn't very fashionable when I was in high school.
The Beatles are my favorite since I learned to operate an 8-track. In high school specifically, though, Duran Duran, fo sho. John Taylor was my guy. But after Freshman year, I was dating a huge Lou Reed fan, so Velvet Underground & Beatles were pretty much my soundtrack from 15-18.
I think only CDAN friends will appreciate this TRUE TEENAGE CONFESSION here today---I was a huge Madonna fan too, from the beginning. The day she married Sean Penn, I actually wore a BLACK ARMBAND, all day. I was 15, and I was devastated b/c he was slimy and so skeevy and not nearly good enough for her.
To be fair, it was Summer and I was just hanging out with friends at home, but still, I did it. I've never told anyone because I have been rightly embarrassed, but with what I know now, my Sean Penn nausea seems pretty wise for my age back then.
Most are still my favorites today - haven't changed much! Still think the best music was alternative in the 80's early 90's. But I guess top favorites were and are The Indigo Girls, Depeche Mode, U2. But I still get my weekly doses of The Cure, Smiths, REM, and James!
No other aging punk rockers on CDAN? Tho i do love the Adam & The Ants (NOT Adam Ant) reference, that brings back some memories. The short one freaks out when I put on Kings of the Wild Frontier.
zef & frufra--- Madonna's early persona was all about female empowerment, independence etc. She was such a smartass, and cool & confident, and then she fell for Sean freakin' Penn? As a fan, something died for me that day. I eventually forgave her until she climbed up her own ass in the last decade.
I only loved a few songs of theirs (Rio!) but man, Duran was huge when I was in high school.
Meanwhile, I went on huge kicks listening to Glenn Miller and Elvis and Nat King Cole. Go figure.
I did, shamefully, love me some Rick Astley. Me and my walkman, singing along to Never Gonna Give You Up in the commons/cafeteria, doing homework. Really classed up the joint, I bet.
Depeche came later for me, in college, when Violator came out. I definitely would have been all over that in high school, I just wasn't exposed to them much until then. Aside from People Are People, which I did adore. That was life in the eighties, with only one very mainstream Top 40 station and tons of country-western. Ah well. At least I found them eventually.
Yeah...basically the Second British Invasion bands...how I miss those days: here's the list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Second_British_Invasion_Artists
Fleetwood Mac (how many women of a Certain Age used to want to dress like Stevie Nicks? *raises hand*), Joni Mitchell (Court and Spark is possibly my all-time favorite album & has been since the '70s), Steely Dan (I thought I was *so* sophisticated...), Neil Young, Carly Simon & James Taylor (they were married back then), Eagles; lots of '70s soft rock, and (believe it or not) lots of disco, esp. the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Pretty much anything you could hear on top 40 AM radio back then, and some of what was on FM--there was an FM station out of Montreal that we could get if the radio was close enough to the TV cable, and I listened to that as much as I could. Oh, and I'm old enough to remember seeing Kate Bush and Talking Heads on SNL back in the day, and being surprised that Tina Weymouth was actually playing a real instrument, and not just a chick singer banging a tambourine. Ah, yes, adolescence...
@Robin and Robert - have my ipod playlist..I have to add the Staple Singers, Stevie Wonder, Boston, I remember hearing Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run for the first time and felt pure lust, bought second hand Levi's, white t-shirts and cowboy boots..The Boss..
Blink 182, New Found Glory, Sublime, Weezer, RHCP and Pearl Jam. Class of '01. First concert was Jimmy Buffett when I was 14, though...still my favorite to this day. Second would be seeing Pearl Jam and Live together in 2000.
I remember my senior year when some really irritating rap was becoming popular...I seem to recall "Back That Ass Up" being played at least three times at prom. Awful.
Now, I really only listen to oldies...lots of Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Led Zep, Hendrix. Endless amounts of Jimmy Buffett. And Miles Davis. ;) I've mellowed with my "old" age.
I had so many favorite bands: Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, Boston, The Doors, Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Heart, Pink Floyd, The Eagles - but The Beatles were my very favorite. I was 17 and really into "The White Album" when Lennon was shot and remember laying on my bed and crying my eyes out.
Music was a lifesaver during the teen years. I remember my mom confiscating my radio because I would fall asleep with it under my pillow. I was raised strict Mormon and she thought it was unhealthy. We also were told what music we could listen to at church - Barry Manilow, LOL. "Dreamboat Annie" was a no-no because it had the lyric, "warm waves caress her".
It was the 80s and Prince and anything out of Paisely Park! I loved the Outfield, Journey, Toto, the Cars, Meatloaf, Pat Benatar, Scandal with Patty Smyth, Foreigner, and Def Leppard.

ReplyDeleteBand? Probably Aerosmith, although I also LOVED Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, U2, & Stone Temple Pilots.
"Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" always make me think of HS.
The Stones, and I really liked The Supremes too.
ReplyDeleteI had so many favorite bands: Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, Boston, The Doors, Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Heart, Pink Floyd, The Eagles - but The Beatles were my very favorite. "Dreamboat Annie" was a no-no because it had the lyric, "warm waves caress her".
