Jon Hamm & Jennifer Westfeldt Were Robbed

Over the weekend, Jennifer Westfeldt told Life & Style that she and Jon Hamm were in London at a restaurant. During dinner, her purse was stolen from her table. Interesting. She also said that because her hotel room key was in the purse, the thief managed to go back to the hotel; go to the room; and clear everything out. Uh huh.

Does anyone else think there is something wrong with this story? Lets go over it all. generally someone who takes a purse from a table during dinner is going to snatch it and run. No one noticed? OK, so no one noticed. Now, the thief is outside and goes through the wallet, and maybe finds some cash and also sees the hotel room key. The next part of the story assumes that Jennifer never took her key out of the little card thing they give you. Otherwise the story is total crap. But, for arguments sake, lets say she kept it in the card so the thief knew what hotel they were staying at and knew what hotel room they were in and was willing to go to the hotel; go to the room; break into the room; and then steal everything in it. remember this was just grabbing a purse from a table. Now, for all of this we also have to assume that Jon and Jennifer never noticed the bag was gone or that they should call the hotel to tell them that their room key was inside and to cancel it. This also assumes they travel with no assistants and no publicists despite it being a working trip. I'm just not buying all of these things that have to go together.

  1. Maybe they were blackout.

  2. I don't know what you are saying here but I wish they would have stolen her cheeck implants and Botox.

  3. I know some people who wouldn't notice the purse gone and have their room key in the sleeve. It is not smart but it does happen.

    ReplyDelete
  4. No idea about the rest of it, but I always leave my key card in the envelope thing... I'm always afraid I'll forget my room number.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I've always left my room key in the little card when i travel, especially I go out and have some cocktails the first night. I might need to be reminded of exactly which room I'm in.

Plus, I can see Jon Hamm to be the type to not travel with an entourage.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sounds like crap to me. How do you not notice someone stealing your purse from your table?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Maybe they decided to have a threesome and the 3rd party robbed them and the truth was too embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Maybe they were in the hotel restaurant when it happened. Wouldn't be difficult for a thief to swipe her things and go right upstairs to their room.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm another one who keeps the card in the cardboard folder from the hotel.

And, depending on how much wine was consumed at the table, I can see where someone may not notice for a while that the purse was missing.

Sorry but I'm not seeing any conspiracy here, Enty. What would be their reason for making up a story like this? It's not like Jon doesn't get a ton of press as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yeah, not really sure what he's implying. Seems like an odd thing to lie about?

I usually save my room key sleeve, btw. 1) So I can remember what room I'm in, and 2) so I can find it in my purse easier. Apparently I'm an idiot. :P

  11. Sounds strange, but whatever.
I am more interested in when he's going to finally come to his senses and ditch her so he can fulfill his burning desire to spend the rest of his days lounging in bed with me.
She does have a weird face and seems annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Also, when I'm carrying a big purse that doesn't fit on my lap under the table, I often hang it on the back of my chair. I really don't think this is something to go all conspiracy theory on...

    ReplyDelete
  13. I almost had my purse stolen from the back of my chair in Chicago. Crowded restaurant, lots of traffic, it would have been easy except I happened to look up at that exact moment. I yelled at the woman and she was like "oh I thought this was my purse!" and fled. Wish I'd followed her and called the cops.

And keeping the room key in the envelope keeps it from getting de-activated by your credit cards.

So yeah, this makes sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't see any reason for them to lie. *shrug*

    ReplyDelete
  15. really not that much of a leap to imagine a slightly north of crazy fan following them from the hotel to dinner and pouncing when the time was right...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Every pic of them she's stuck on his ass with a death grip so he can't leave.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Cathy, the worst place to put your purse is on the back of the chair. Her purse was likely on the floor, and that's why she didn't notice it was missing right away.

If my purse is too big for my lap, it either goes on another chair or on the floor, where I hold on to it with my feet.

And like everyone else, I too keep my hotel card in the envelope they provide, because the magnetic strip on the back is very easily wiped out (if it's near a magnet or your cell phone).

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm sorry, I couldn't focus on what the story was. I was to busy staring at Jon Hamm and his hotness. They robbed someone?

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's extremely easy to "not notice" your purse getting stolen, otherwise it wouldn't have gotten stolen. And it happens all the time.

I never keep the sleeve but I put the room number in my phone. I used to travel for work so I've had to take courses on personal safety, esp because a lot of the places I've gone have not been safe for me to even be alone in public.

#1 rule, put your passport in the hotel safe because if that gets stolen, it's a lot of work to get a new one (and takes time). Passports, esp American and Canadian, are worth a ton of money.

    Why would they lie?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, and I always keep the card in the slot in my purse for my cellphone. I never put my phone in that thing. It's for hand cream and hotel keys.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It was too long to read ....and too boring.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous8:32 AM

This story doesn't sound that odd. More like a series of little things adding up to a bad event. It's not particularly strange.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There are places where it's "easy" for thrives to steal bags. Waitstaff warn ya too. It's the trendy designs of certain places that make it so easy. That's why I always carry a bowling ball. If someone is going so steal my bag they can have a hernia too

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, seems plausible and why make it up? A co worker had her purse stolen at Au Ban Pain during a busy lunch hour and we didn't notice until we were leaving. No hotel key involved, but as the previous comments suggest, it's pretty common.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i see that no one stole Enty's bag:it's just the begining of a long nightmare

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm with Enty on this one. Sounds like an inside job. They probably know who stole from their hotel room.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The only thing I see as "off" is that to do this, the thief has to take the chance that they won't come directly back to the hotel and catch them in the act of robbing them.

    Pretty big risk IMO

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sweet...so it's socially acceptable here if I hate her guts out of sheer jealousy? Yay! I have someone else to direct my anger towards besides Danni Minogue. Bitch was all up on Joe Manganiello on The Soup last week.
    I'M WATCHING YOU DANNI

    ReplyDelete
  29. I also leave the card in the sleeve. When you travel a lot, you can easily forget what hotel and room number you are in. It is easy to forget about your purse too. If it was me, and I realized my purse was missing, I would be more interested in cancelling my cards than my hotel room. In fact, i would probably forget that they would have access. If this indeed went down, security cameras at the hotel should help with IDing the thieves.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Women typically hang their purse on the back of their chair at dinner, and if I'm dining with Jon Hamm, I am NOT looking at my bag all night.
I also doubt they travel with assistants. He was in Indy for the Superbowl and was dining with one friend, not an entourage. Really kind and gracious to everyone who approached him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Purse snatchers are pros, and as @surfer says, back-of-the-chair in restaurants and the floor beneath tables are common targets. These guys probably steal 6-10 purses a day, if not more.

London is a big city, has lots of crooks - both locals and destination crooks from all over the world. This doesn't surprise me at all.

Probably had a few drinks at dinner, didn't notice the bag was gone until too late, and by that time the crooks were done with their hotel room.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm a huge fan of Jon, and I know that Jennifer has had a little work done, but they seem happy.
I've noticed how much hate she gets from his fan girls, but I have to say that Jon seems like a genuinely smart, together guy. I don't think he is there because she has a death grip on his arm. Jennifer is extremely witty and smart, she's a good writer, actress, and producer.
I'd prefer to retain the fantasy of a man that is good enough to appreciate all these qualities in the woman he has chosen to be with.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Meh. Neither of them are really ever known to spill their life stories and live life like an open wound for attention. So i'm inclined to believe it. I mean it's not the smartest thing in the world to do to do all those tiny erroneous things for that to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "...millions of women were pleased to learn that the thieves were unable to abscond with Mr. Hamm's nuclear hotness."

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can understand not noticing that your bag was stolen - if you're having dinner with Jon Hamm, you're probably distracted *L*.

And apparently, people DO leave their room key in the envelope with the room number on it. Personally, I kind of like to assume that the front desk staff knows what room I'm in ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. This doesn't sound crazy to me at all.

I used to lead tours in Europe and one of my major rules for my tourists was bags on your lap, leg through the strap. These aren't bag snatchers. These are professionals, who lean back and reach over when you're not looking. I know loads of people who lost phones and wallets stored in jacket pockets this way as well.

Enty, you're looking at this all wrong. People who do this in nice restaurants are professionals. They aren't idiots who grab and ran.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ive seen many shows where criminals do this- lift a purse, and take advantage of contents. Ive seen them take cars, pick up cars from valet, etc. and aslo seen where peeps swear they are totally aware, and no one cld ever get their purse, and boom, its gone. I think they were vics of scam, no reason to disbelieve.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thieves also work in groups and people tend to dine near their hotel. It's possible (not saying it happened) that one person went to their hotel room while someone stayed and watched them. Or the purse was stolen as they ordered dinner (meaning they'd be awhile).

I only put my purse on the back of a chair if I'm against the wall. Otherwise it's on the floor or on my feet (depending on cleanliness). I have one of those hooks but I feel silly using it.

And like Maja implied, don't keep the sleeve and if you forget, ask front desk.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous9:00 AM

I actually had my HUGE LV bag stolen years ago in a bar. THOUGHT I had the handle hooked thru my foot on the barstool, not just lying on the floor so nobody could take it.
HAH ! Well, my foot slipped out of the handle after I was relaxed and some guy sitting right next to me managed to take my HUGE bag, somehow slip it under his trench coat and left. I discovered it was gone after about 15 minutes after the guy left.
It happens quite easily. Even when you think you're being attentive ~ a couple of drinks will do you in !

    ReplyDelete
  40. If I were looking deeply into Jon's eyes...I wouldn't notice anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Was the restaurant in the hotel? I'm guessing this was a really nice hotel. Could be pretty easy to take a purse and run upstairs after going thru the contents in restroom and finding the key.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't think it's that implausible to believe. She got her purse stolen, maybe they were eating close to the hotel, saw a friend at the restaurant, were talking, who knows. While she was searching/realizing it was gone they had already gone back to the hotel and cleaned it out. Those guys (thieves) know what they are doing.

Regardless, getting your purse stolen, esp. when traveling, is the absolute worst. I got my purse stolen right after I had gotten back from a work trip...and headed to the much needed bar...realized it happened, flagged a policeman, called my CC company, all in max 30 mins, and my card had already been to Target and Walmart and back.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've had my purse taken from under a table in Washington DC. I had no idea until after I was done with lunch. 20-30 minutes easily could have passed between when the bag was stolen and I noticed it. That's plenty of time for a thief to go to a hotel room and clear it out.

Jon Hamm doesn't seem the type to have an entourage. He's too mature and grounded for that.

She *does* seem to be hanging on him in many photos, but I'd be hanging on my husband as well if women were throwing themselves at him left and right.

Why is this news? Because Enty knows his readership, and his readers love the Hamm.

    ReplyDelete
  44. For reasons already stated above, this sounds plausible to me. But, Enty, if you know something we should know, just write a blind, let the hive mind solve it and then we can all reinterpret this post with hindsight.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Debutante, just curious, did your insurance (if you had home insurance or whatever) cover the cost of the bag? Because my purses are often worth more than the contents of the purse (theoretically) and I'm more afraid of losing the purse. And my hand cream, I can't be without hand cream.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous9:47 AM

I always either hang my purse from the table right next to me with one of those purse hangers, hold it in my lap if it's a small clutch, or put it between my feet on the floor.

And I always keep the card key in the envelope. Otherwise I wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell remembering what room I'm in.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If this happened to me in London, I'd be most worried about my passport and that kind of thing. I'm not sure why you think they are lying--did they claim a big amount of money/stuff was stolen? Why would they go through all the hassle of this if it didn't happen?

Maybe they were drinking at dinner and she forgot her bag when they got up to go.

    ReplyDelete
  48. why would they lie about it. they are usually low key. what purpose would it serve?
In another related story, a friend of mine who lives in NYC said she waiting on Jon Hamm over the weekend, but this story says he was in London. hmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't know why enty thinks she is lying, or why she would lie about something like that.

I got my purse stolen in nyc in a restaurant. I was getting take out, put the purse down for a micro-second, went to pick it up and it was gone. never noticed anyone near me or anything. it happens.

    ReplyDelete
  50. When I was sitting in Heathrow at the lounge, with a couple if work colleagues, a guy came through the tightly packed tables and sauntered past between our chairs - hooking my bag under his arm oh so casually as he went. I noticed and stood up and made a scene as I grabbed him. He knew he was not getting out of there without police or security stopping him so he dropped it. London is rife with bag stealers and pickpockets.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Shallow Gal, nah it says that she told the story over the weekend. It doesn't say when they were in London. Oh and London is full of very professional bag thieves; like everyone has said, this is absolutely a believable story.

    ReplyDelete
  52. jon hamm is very recognizable and the couple could have been followed. if the theif got the purse outside and found the hotel key he probably thought he scored. who the hell knows. there is some poor judgement here maybe, but not lies.

    ReplyDelete
  53. There has to be video of the thieves inside of the hotel then right?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Lots of European hotels, especially the nicer ones, give you "real" keys, not plastic. E.g., the Hassler in Rome. They have the hotel name and room number on them. However, you are supposed to leave them at the front desk when you go out - but not everyone does.

I don't see any reason to doubt this story. It's unfortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I believe them too. It's very easy (as we've seen) that no matter how careful and samrt you are, your purse can still be stolen in any large (or small) city in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I believe them. I also leave my hotel keys in the envelope so I know what room I'm in and also so I can find the damn thing. Plus, thieves don't want you to notice them stealing your purse and causing a scene. It's entirely possible she didn't notice it gone for a while.

If a thief is hanging out at a hotel, it's safe to assume if they got a card they'd ransack your room if they thought it was possible. I don't smell a conspiracy here.

    ReplyDelete
  57. A woman putting her purse on the ground or off to the side is rather common. People leaving the room key in the envelope also common.

I don't see why you'd stir up unnecessary controversy involving two rather lovely people. Slow day? Bored and bitter? All of thee above?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lot of Hello Kitty fangirls on the site today! Just because Jon Hamm is "hot, doesn't make him or his cheecky girlfriend above suspicion. I'm with ENTY on this one- sounds fishy as hell. It sounds like they got nicked by a third party and needed to report it, but not "exactly" how it happened.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Unless Jon is filing an insurance claim for the Hope diamond or something like that, I don't see anything suspect about this at all. Why wouldn't they keep the keycard in the envelope? They travel all the time with their jobs and stay in hotels constantly. I would imagine it's hard to remember hotel room #s after awhile. Jon and his lady were probably tossing some drinks back and didn't notice that the purse was gone. Sucks. Good thing he has crazy cash to replace his wears. The world continues to turn.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I was out with friends in a restaurant and none of us noticed that one guy in our party had his leather jacket had been picked up off the back of his chair. This is a big 6 foot 4 guy, and I wager his jacket was many times larger than Jennifer Westfeldt's handbag.

Also, I don't see what their gain is to this story. It sounds completely plausible to me. I always have loads of crap in my purse when I travel, including paperwork with my room #.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anonymous11:24 AM

This sounds perfectly plausible for non celeb visitors and even more so b/c Jon and Jen, especially Jon, have high visibility. I don't get the hate and conspiracy. It's a bad experience and now lesson is learned.

When we were in Barcelona we were told over and over again to be careful in Las Ramblas but we end up getting robbed right across the street from our hotel way off Las Ramblas while paying for gelato. The cashier at the little shop saw it happen and told us so we went after two perfectly innocent looking older women who had walked in moments earlier to ask for water and we got the wallet back. They were thisclose to getting the shit beat out of them except it was so shocking to see how old they were and we were just grateful to get the wallet back at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  62. If she hung onto her purse the way she hangs on to him it would have never gotten stolen. Sometimes when these two are on the red carpet they look a little tipsy to me so it probably wasn't that difficult for the thief. Maybe they were both "Hammered".

    ReplyDelete
  63. The only thing that is suspect about this story is the massive details involved. When there are so many details, chances are, something is fishy. Sex tape setup, anyone??

    ReplyDelete
  64. If you leave your key card in the sleeve with your room number on it and got robbed, could you claim insurance?

Because if your bank card gets stolen and your account gets drained and your PIN is your birthday or phone number, your bank may not cover the loss.

Don't leave your card in the sleeve. And don't return your card to the hotel at the end of your stay. Destroy it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hamm-Westfeldt sex tape, imminent.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I live in Las Vegas, this town is home to very professional thieves. I never set my bag on the floor or hang it over my chair. It stays in my lap with the napkin over it.

I've warned countless women that I saw doing those very things. One woman at a buffet hung her purse on the back of her chair then she and her mate got up and left the table.

I don't like hanging it on a hook in the ladies room if the hook is near the top of the door, too easy to reach over and grab it.

Those backpack style purses that a lot of the young wear are just what the thief is looking for, they can unzip them behind you and take everything and you don't know a thing.

Also never leave your room key when you leave for good, take it with you, much of your personal info is imbedded in the magnetic strip.

As for these two, maybe they were
targeted as soon as they sat down for their meal. Thieves know where the hotel cameras are, they don't need much time.

    ReplyDelete
  67. @anita - if you have lots of expensive purses, you should look into a rider on your renter's/homeowner's insurance. Common riders cover expensive jewelry, guns, computer equipment, etc. (I was an insurance salesperson in a past life.)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ooh, but bear in mind that deductibles tend to apply, so consider that, too.

    ReplyDelete
  69. There are still a lot of London hotels that give you a skeleton key rather than a card. And the key tends to have a tag with the room number attached.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks Frufra!

Although now that I think about it, leaving the keycard in the sleeve is no different than your keys and driver's licence being in your purse (for insurance purposes).

    So never mind.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Diana it sounds like you were pickpocketed, not robbed. Someone robbing you tends to be a more violent act involving a harmful weapon.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Sorry, Enty, you are being unfair. I have had my bag stolen several times from restaurants. It takes maybe half an hour to notice it's gone. Then at least 2 hours at the police station. Then about 2 more hours to make all the phone calls to cancel your credit cards. These thieves are pros, they work a lot faster than the people taking your calls. Some cards had already racked up charges. And the girl from the phone company did not hit "enter" or something after I called. I ended up with a new phone number, but a $10,000 phone bill on the old number.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @DelRiser, great and useful info, thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  74. i think this story is just a setup to give a plausible excuse for the release of the inevitable sextape.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Meant to add this earlier. Another reason I will never put my purse on the back of a chair - once walked out of a restaurant (was on the sidewalk, actually), when suddenly the manager came running after me, holding my purse. I had completely forgotten about it! Out of sight, out of mind.

I once had my purse stolen at work. It was a few days before Christmas - just try and replace your driver's licence and everything else at that time of year. It was a f*cking nightmare. Months later, someone mailed the purse to me, completely empty. The most bizarre thing ever. And yes, house insurance covered everything that was in it. Always felt it was a particular co-worker, but had no way to prove it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I always keep cards in their sheaths. And sometimes I am lightheaded and I sometimes forget my stuff. I hope they can recover their stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Could be some PR type made up story, but they don't seem the types.

I could see this happen, the other night I was in a restaurant, and the people behind us went out for a smoke. She left her bag on the seat right behind me, and an iphone on the table. I could have taken her wallet and iphone if I wanted to. People are very trusting.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I can believe it would happen, ESPECIALLY if they were boozing.

I have left my key card in it's sleeve before. My husband said sometimes credit cards can deactivate the keys, so I look at the envelope in some cases when they near each other in my small little wallet.

I bought this (supposedly) anti-theft purse for travel (for a trip to Vegas, actually) and while it's not the prettiest thing, it has a lot of neat security features that are suppsoed to deter/stop a theft (unless you leave your purse out of eyesight).

    ReplyDelete
  79. *in some cases, like added protection..is what that should have said.
