My answer would probably change at any given moment on any given day, but right now I would choose to see Robert Johnson, the blues singer and alleged Faustian deal maker.
i think a Johnny Cash show would be pretty good. Or Buddy Holly. or Whats his name...... Roy Orbison. Shit I could sing and sway along to, and that I know all the words.
I'd see Frank Sinatra too.
I think I've seen everyone else that I'd want to. Alive or died in the passed 15 years.
Can I take a double headlining tour of Eva Cassidy and Freedy Johnston? They didn't get to work together before she passed. But if I ever was lucky enough to see a Vegas show I'd have to take Garth all the way.
John Lee Hooker. I listen to his early stuff all the time. Frank Sinatra w/b good too, but the gun-to-my-head-you-can-only-pick-one w/b John Lee, definitely.
Carolyn, I hear you. But since I've been making decisions for myself in life I do not see the point in limiting my options :) Hopefully Enty will not ban me for this..... :)
Dead? Patsy Cline. Or MAYBE Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash. Or all of the Beatles. Damn! Hard to narrow it down.
Living? I have five on my bucket list: Springsteen, Sir Paul, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and George Strait. Anyone else whom I love, I've been blessed enough to have seen already.
So, yeah. Can't narrow any of it down to just one.
Aunt Jess: I want to go to your concert with Eva (because Carolyn is making us choose one ;P) and you can come to my Ella Fitzgerald concert. Then we can head out to SusanB's Bessie Smith performance and finish off with singing to Patsy Cline over at AKM's.
I saw the faith tour in 88 and I must tell you....I was in general admission. Right at the.front of the.stage. Super cute 16 year old I was...george sang father figure ickily close to my face.
The Doors with Jim wearing tight leather pants.......but keeping everything in. 1. Break on through. 2. Light My Fire. Then the audience can shout out their requests.
New Order in the late 1980's? That or Talking Heads in 1979 the last time they toured as a 4 piece band. I saw the Cure in 1989 on the Disintegration Tour. But the 1984 tour that produced The Cure at Orange video would have been a great one to see. Rolling Stones 1969 tour of the US. You want to catch a band at their absolute peak. After that it becomes a nostalgia act.
Beastie Boys. I'm so bummed that I'm never going to see them perform live now. I had tickets to their 2000 tour with Rage Against the Machine that got cancelled when Mike D broke his arm. :-(
I've already seen my biggie faves multiple times: Springsteen and the E Street Band, U2 and Bon Jovi. I think I would go with the Rat Pack. But I would love to see George Michael, too. And Pearl Jam. And Jason Mraz. This is a tough question. I feel so disloyal no matter who I say. I love too much music to answer this properly.
@Carolyn..Join us and we'll make it s girls night out. I would also like to see me some Ramones while we're making a party of it! And yes Blondie..we know, we can choose only one so this was my best solution to be greedy and see as many as possible. You know you want to too! ;)
@Norte & EmEyeKay: I was just looking at the cover of Ziggy Stardust and realized the sign over Bowie's head says "K. West." :-( It's impossible to pick just one. Probably the 1969 Rolling Stones, as well. But then again...
Besides the Beatles, or Jimi or Janis in concert, think I've seen prob seen e'eryone I've needed to see live (Abba to Floyd to Zeppelin). I would rather have a one-on-one with Mr. John Lennon with 2 acoustic guitars available...
I saw a couple of my favorites. Dylan twice, Leonard Cohen. I still have to see U2 and Bruce, Blondie and Tom Waits. Warren Zevon died so I want get that chance. Sads.
I'm pretty lucky; saw pretty much everone I wanted to see in the 60's and 70's. Beatles, rolling stones, joplin, ike and tina, chambers brothers , van morrison many times, richie havens, hall and oates, eagles, etall. I guess insld love to hv seen Queen, whom I only started to appreciate the past coupla years. Ahh, Freddie, we miss ya and love ya.
Forgot Leon Russell ringo starr, joe Cocker, and many others. There used to be super bills, with like 5 great groups on one bill- like the philmore east. Check out an old show listing. So u sld see aloota groups that hadnt hit big yet. Jimi- meh, idk, better on tape.
Without question... LAYNE STALEY. So happy to see a few other readers agree with me. That voice was a gift from god! Ya, Alice is still together and still tours, however, the new Alice doesnt hold a candle to the AiC of the early 90s. RIP Layne.
I'm tossed between Oingo Boingo and the Ramones. My thirteen year old son loves them too, he runs around singing 'Beat on the Brat' and 'Dead Man's Party'.
My hubby and friend saw police when they first came along. They sang like 10 songs, the sang same 10 again!!! Lol. Didnt even hv a long enough playlist, lol
@Kelwolfen - pick up a copy of Levon Helm's book, This Wheel's On Fire. I can barely watch The Last Waltz any more, knowing what an asshole Robbie was.
Yes, what's going on with Robbie Robertson boycott? I love him, but he wouldn't be my pick, love Zep huge fan when I was a teenager and Janice..Jefferson Starship, I saw u2 last summer, but my heart belongs to the Boss, I adore Springsteen..
Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper in Clear Lake Iowa. I'd also take a limo and drive them to their next gig so they didn't get on that damned plane!
Yes - Ziggy Stardust, Led Zeppelin, Queen... Joy Division, Pink Floyd (just saw the 60 Minutes clip of Roger Waters' The Wall and I am dying to see that)... I just can't limit it to one.
just throwing this out there because I have to be all sweet and wonderful around my family, but I got laid off work today. They were nice enough to tell me that I can stay until August. Life sucks. No education, no talent, mediocore human being in general. Where the fuck is the beer.
BigMama I was laid off two jobs in a row so I can relate. You have mad skills and you will articulate them as you update your resume. Wishing you all the best. Some of my best jobs have been "rebounds ". Believe it and it will be so. I'm putting it out in the universe for you. Good luck!
I guess i am fortunate as I have seen many already listed, the Beasties a bunch of times, INXS, Elvis Costello at least 10 times, Oingo Boingo for nearly every Halloween show, Ramones, I was also at Queen at the forum 1980? when the Blasters opened for them. Funny enough i am going to see Prince tonight here in Sydney.
My list of wishes are down to three, Robert Johnson in a delta roadhouse, one of the italian castrato soprano singers, or Mozart (preferably the teenage years).
Bruce Springsteen
ReplyDeleteI'm a Bruce Tramp!!!!
I assume we can go back in time? I'd choose Maria Callas performing Madame Butterfly at her peak. I would love to hear her live.
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson
ReplyDeletei'm not going to limit myself to just one, that's silly......
ReplyDeleteElvis, MJ, Frank Sinatra.
My answer would probably change at any given moment on any given day, but right now I would choose to see Robert Johnson, the blues singer and alleged Faustian deal maker.
ReplyDeleteGlenn Miller
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles. Second choice, Nirvana.
ReplyDeleteBeatles in the early days. Strip bar in Hamburg.
ReplyDeleteLayne Staley.
ReplyDeleteAlice in Chains
ReplyDeletei think a Johnny Cash show would be pretty good. Or Buddy Holly. or Whats his name...... Roy Orbison.
ReplyDeleteShit I could sing and sway along to, and that I know all the words.
I'd see Frank Sinatra too.
I think I've seen everyone else that I'd want to. Alive or died in the passed 15 years.
I could make a list of the singers that I would like to see dead, but it seems untoward to start my week like that.
ReplyDeleteEither Shannon Hoon or Michael Hutchence
ReplyDeleteBeatles at the Cavern Club - 1961.
ReplyDeleteOr; Kate Bush, in my living room.
Bessie Smith - Empress of the Blues. People don't seem to know much about her today - she was a big influence on, among others, Janis Joplin
ReplyDeleteIf more than one, Billie Holiday and the Beatles.
oooh - forgot about Robert Johnson - I'd love to see him too.
What's wrong with you people? You are just supposed to pick one!
ReplyDelete:P
Can I take a double headlining tour of Eva Cassidy and Freedy Johnston? They didn't get to work together before she passed. But if I ever was lucky enough to see a Vegas show I'd have to take Garth all the way.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lee Hooker. I listen to his early stuff all the time. Frank Sinatra w/b good too, but the gun-to-my-head-you-can-only-pick-one w/b John Lee, definitely.
ReplyDeleteBoss Hog. I miss 'em.
ReplyDeleteQueen
ReplyDeleteNo question on a solo, Freddie Mercury.
ReplyDeleteJanis Joplin and the Big Brother Holding Company at the Fillmore.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn, I hear you. But since I've been making decisions for myself in life I do not see the point in limiting my options :)
ReplyDeleteHopefully Enty will not ban me for this..... :)
Dead? Patsy Cline. Or MAYBE Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash. Or all of the Beatles. Damn! Hard to narrow it down.
ReplyDeleteLiving? I have five on my bucket list: Springsteen, Sir Paul, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and George Strait. Anyone else whom I love, I've been blessed enough to have seen already.
So, yeah. Can't narrow any of it down to just one.
I miss Layne Staley SO MUCH!
ReplyDeleteNo voice like his. ♥ ♥ ♥
Ian Tyson, before he damaged his vocal cords and his voice changed from mellow sexy to raspy old man.
ReplyDeleteElvis, of course.
Queen.
Levon Helm.
Damn, they're all dead but Ian, and he's almost 80.
Hard question...It's impossible to pick only one. lol
ReplyDeleteNirvana
Hendrix
Protest the Hero (all ready have seen them, but I'd still pick them. LOVE THEM!!!)
John Denver - still smarting from the loss
ReplyDeleteJohn Denver - still smarting from the loss
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I saw him already, twice...
ReplyDeletePrince.
Michael Hutchence.
ReplyDeleteBob Dylan, early 70s. You can't count on the Bob of today.
ReplyDeleteJourney - ONLY WITH STEVE PERRY!
ReplyDeleteAgree, farmgirl. I just love him, and always think about his tragic death as I listen to him singing about how beautiful life is.
ReplyDeleteMe, too! I thought I'd be the only one who said John Denver. Anyway, he's been gone 15 years this October. So sad.
DeleteKaren Carpenter. So sad when I found out she had passed away...
ReplyDeleteAunt Jess: I want to go to your concert with Eva (because Carolyn is making us choose one ;P) and you can come to my Ella Fitzgerald concert. Then we can head out to SusanB's Bessie Smith performance and finish off with singing to Patsy Cline over at AKM's.
ReplyDeleteConcha, the Sex Pistols at the 100 club in 76
ReplyDelete"You can only choose one though."
ReplyDeleteHelllloooo people! LOL
I'll go with George Michael in his hay day.
I saw the faith tour in 88 and I must tell you....I was in general admission. Right at the.front of the.stage. Super cute 16 year old I was...george sang father figure ickily close to my face.
DeleteDid I mention it was icky?
DeleteSo you didn't enjoy the concert? ;) I love the song "Faith."
DeleteNo....I had no idea and George was phenomenal.
DeleteAs a 40 year old man today George was icky and taking real liberties with my face. Lol
Joy Division
ReplyDeleteThe Doors with Jim wearing tight leather pants.......but keeping everything in. 1. Break on through. 2. Light My Fire. Then the audience can shout out their requests.
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson
Everybody else I'd like to see, I've seen. Except Radiohead but I'm sure that'll happen some day.
Queen as they were in 1980 or so.
ReplyDeleteLed Zepplin in all their original glory!!
ReplyDelete@Sherry I'm down! After that we gotta make a quick stop for Syko to get in on the Levon Helm action. (I am boycotting Robbie Robertson tho)
ReplyDeleteZiggy Stardust and his godamn spiders from mars
ReplyDeleteJim Morrison & The Doors
ReplyDeleteOh, @Norte, I wanna go too. Will cry through "Five Years".

DeleteCHIC.....that's the answer right there.
ReplyDeleteBrother Nile & brother Nard inventing the pocket.
Edith Piaf, small venue in Paris.
ReplyDelete@Norte
ReplyDelete"Ickily"? Oh man, that makes my heart hurt girl! I'd have died and gone to heaven, LOL.
....at one point his beard was on my cheek.....cheek to cheek singing....lol...and then there was the thrusting
DeleteNo matter how goodlooking I was (and I was shockingly handsome)
Deletethe choreography of Monkey should not have been performed an inch from my nose
The Minutemen. I've already seen pretty much everyone I ever wanted to (including Boss Hog!)
ReplyDeleteBut if I could pick two, I'd say Elvis.
ReplyDelete@ Sherry, what a creative solution! I'm impressed!
ReplyDeleteBeethovan.
ReplyDeleteBeastie Boys. I'm so bummed that I'm never going to see them perform live now. I had tickets to their 2000 tour with Rage Against the Machine that got cancelled when Mike D broke his arm. :-(
ReplyDeleteI was blessed to see the boys twice....once where Rollins Band opened...and the other time at an infamous and brilliant Opera House show in Toronto.
Deleterip brother touch
Brother yauch
DeleteThe smiths
ReplyDeleteSaw them in 86.
DeleteAlso Morrissey solo.
DeleteJim Morrison and The Doors
ReplyDeleteRoy Orbison, he still occupies a lot of my playlist.
ReplyDeleteI think the rule should be one from the deceased list and one still alive.
Soooo, my second choice is Joe Cocker.
@Andrew...cool choice. :) I just sang a choral work of his that was supposedly his last public performance.
ReplyDeleteJudy Garland - now that is not my kind of music, I'm a metalhead, BUT she had such an incredible voice that I think very few have been able to match.
ReplyDeleteGood choice.
DeleteJimi Hendrix or Beatles. Why squander my choice on someone from today?
ReplyDeleteI'm not trying to be all one upmanship guy ....so forgive me of it seems that way. I'm just bored and I've been to a lot of shows.
ReplyDeleteLed Zeppelin!
ReplyDeleteCat Stevens, Earth Tour in 1971 I think. I'd sell my soul.
ReplyDeleteQueen.. Without a doubt... Freddie Mercury was truly magnificent, and I would have loved to see him live in all his over the top glory.. :-)
ReplyDeleteRamones, never did get to catch them when I had the chance. Totally regret it now.
ReplyDeleteHendrix, the Beatles, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly. Certainly wouldn't pick someone I can go see live just by buying a ticket.
ReplyDeleteand on that note, I'd like to see Mozart play.
I would have such a hard time choosing between Nirvana and Sublime. This is way harder than I thought.............. I'm going with Sublime.
ReplyDeleteI've already seen my biggie faves multiple times: Springsteen and the E Street Band, U2 and Bon Jovi. I think I would go with the Rat Pack. But I would love to see George Michael, too. And Pearl Jam. And Jason Mraz. This is a tough question. I feel so disloyal no matter who I say. I love too much music to answer this properly.
ReplyDeleteso hard to pick one...but I will go with Freddie Mercury. That, was real showmanship.
ReplyDelete@Aunt Jess - I am boycotting Robbie too, which is why I said Levon instead of The Band. I wouldn't mind Rick and Richard, though. :)
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for Layne Staley/Alice in Chains.... Saw AIC with William DuVall, and while it was really good, I would LOVE to see Layne.
ReplyDeleteQueen. I've seen pretty much everyone I've wanted to see during my lifetime, but Freddie was a showman like no other
ReplyDelete@Carolyn..Join us and we'll make it s girls night out. I would also like to see me some Ramones while we're making a party of it!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes Blondie..we know, we can choose only one so this was my best solution to be greedy and see as many as possible. You know you want to too! ;)
Led Zeppelin, back in the day... or Aerosmith... or Pink Floyd.
ReplyDeleteI'd want to hear Son House. I'm an old blues fan. I've heard only recordings, most of which are not very good.
ReplyDeleteBruce Springsteen, Asbury Park, back in the day, with Clarence. A seat at the bar with a good view, and maybe a photo op afterwards....
ReplyDeleteDead, Queen
ReplyDeleteAlive, Elton
I have a flare for the dramatic :-P
Janis Joplin!
ReplyDeleteEtta James
ReplyDeleteMichael Hutchence
ReplyDeleteLed Zep or Sublime.
ReplyDelete@Norte & EmEyeKay: I was just looking at the cover of Ziggy Stardust and realized the sign over Bowie's head says "K. West." :-(
ReplyDeleteIt's impossible to pick just one. Probably the 1969 Rolling Stones, as well. But then again...
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThe 1965 version of The Byrds with Gene Clark.
ReplyDeleteThe Velvet Underground, 1968.
ReplyDeleteBesides the Beatles, or Jimi or Janis in concert, think I've seen prob seen e'eryone I've needed to see live (Abba to Floyd to Zeppelin). I would rather have a one-on-one with Mr. John Lennon with 2 acoustic guitars available...
ReplyDelete@Norte
ReplyDeleteJeeze, you had me at thrusting!
Queen with Freddie.
ReplyDeleteStevie Ray Vaughan, though I also really like someone else's choice of Edith Piaf, in Paris.
ReplyDeleteI saw a couple of my favorites. Dylan twice, Leonard Cohen. I still have to see U2 and Bruce, Blondie and Tom Waits. Warren Zevon died so I want get that chance. Sads.
ReplyDeleteLed Zeppelin circa the song remains the same.
ReplyDeleteLed Zeppelin circa the song remains the same.
ReplyDeleteI would see Pavarotti sing with Joan Sutherland.
ReplyDeleteNirvana and the smashing pumpkins....
ReplyDeleteOkay. I listen to Mahler so so so often now...
ReplyDeleteI choose Harry Nilsson. Always Harry... the same as I choose life no matter what.
Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morrison & The Doors
ReplyDeleteI sat in the 2nd row at The Forum for Freddie Mercury and Queen. It was one of the best shows ever!
Springsteen in the 70s. I'll be seeing him this summer in Boston (5th time).
ReplyDeleteIf I could have a time machine, I'd just go back for concerts, that's all.
The Beatles. If I were going with only living, I'd want to see Yo Yo Ma again. He's a magician.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI got to see Queen with Freddie, so that just leaves the Beatles in Hamburg, specifically Mr. Lennon.
ReplyDeleteToo many to list. But some of the obvious ones:
ReplyDeleteElvis, The Beatles, The Doors, Janice Joplin, Buddy Holly, Zeppelin, Yardbirds, Hendrix, etc.
But choosing just ONE?.... The Beatles
Queen of course... Circa 1976. Also would want to meet Brian May before he met his then wife!! Mwahahahaha

ReplyDeleteNina Simone
ReplyDeleteI'm tossed between Oingo Boingo and the Ramones. My thirteen year old son loves them too, he runs around singing 'Beat on the Brat' and 'Dead Man's Party'.
ReplyDeleteJimi without a doubt. BTW....why the boycott on Robbie Robertson? I musta missed something.
ReplyDeleteBob Marley and the I Threes. Easy Skanking is my Good Mood song
ReplyDeleteI saw Queen 3 times, Amazing. I am torn between the Ramones and Elvis Costello. Never saw the Ramones live, I've seen Elvis 3x and I Adore him ;)
ReplyDeleteI guess I'd pick Ramones since I could still see Spike again.
My hubby and friend saw police when they first came along. They sang like 10 songs, the sang same 10 again!!! Lol. Didnt even hv a long enough playlist, lol
ReplyDelete@Kelwolfen - pick up a copy of Levon Helm's book, This Wheel's On Fire. I can barely watch The Last Waltz any more, knowing what an asshole Robbie was.

ReplyDeleteLiving-Sting
ReplyDeleteDead-- either -- Freddie Mercury or Stevie Ray Vaughn
Kate Bush on her one and only tour. God, she was incredible on that tour (at least on the tapes -- I wasn't into her music until well after 1979).
ReplyDeleteSecond choice? Aha. I wish I had seen them on their farewell tour.
Super simple, Jeff Buckley.
ReplyDeleteI'd go back to see any grateful dead show, even the crappy ones.
ReplyDeleteYes front row of Jeff Buckley *swoon*
ReplyDeleteSting
ReplyDeleteDepeche Mode circa Devotional Tour 1993. I'd get the hell backstage to Dave Gahan & let him show me the world in his eyes.
ReplyDeleteThanks Syko, I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteT-Rex, RIP Marc Bolan! or The Who live in the 60s... such a tough question!
ReplyDeleteBuddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper in Clear Lake Iowa. I'd also take a limo and drive them to their next gig so they didn't get on that damned plane!
ReplyDeleteYes - Ziggy Stardust, Led Zeppelin, Queen... Joy Division, Pink Floyd (just saw the 60 Minutes clip of Roger Waters' The Wall and I am dying to see that)... I just can't limit it to one.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt, Layne Staley. RIP.
ReplyDeleteKate Bush! God I love her, but I would love to see Steve Perry back with the original Journey. The one without Randy Jackson.
ReplyDeleteJimi Hendrix
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the Beatles...
ReplyDelete2nd choice a just slightly high Amy Winehouse!!!
the DEAD!!
ReplyDeleteBeatles or Nirvana
ReplyDeleteSting
ReplyDeletejust throwing this out there because I have to be all sweet and wonderful around my family, but I got laid off work today. They were nice enough to tell me that I can stay until August. Life sucks. No education, no talent, mediocore human being in general. Where the fuck is the beer.
Sorry to hear that, BigMama. It's a scary world. Hopefully this turns out good for you and you find something else that's better and pays more.
ReplyDeleteThank you Syko - *sniff* gonna have a hard time with this, even though I knew it was coming.
ReplyDeleteBigMama - You are NOT mediocre!! Hang in there. It will get better.
ReplyDeleteBigMama I was laid off two jobs in a row so I can relate. You have mad skills and you will articulate them as you update your resume. Wishing you all the best. Some of my best jobs have been "rebounds ". Believe it and it will be so. I'm putting it out in the universe for you. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteJim Morrison circa 1967. Let me sleep all night in your Soul Kitchen.
ReplyDeleteSupertramp.
ReplyDeleteYep. I'm old.
New Kids On The Block. Not even embarrassed
ReplyDeleteI guess i am fortunate as I have seen many already listed, the Beasties a bunch of times, INXS, Elvis Costello at least 10 times, Oingo Boingo for nearly every Halloween show, Ramones, I was also at Queen at the forum 1980? when the Blasters opened for them. Funny enough i am going to see Prince tonight here in Sydney.
ReplyDeleteMy list of wishes are down to three, Robert Johnson in a delta roadhouse, one of the italian castrato soprano singers, or Mozart (preferably the teenage years).
R.A.M.O.N.E.S, R.A.M.O.N.E.S, RAMONES!
ReplyDelete@BigMama, a door closes, a door opens, maybe to a better place. I'm with Sherry putting it out to the universe for you.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to you!
Either Nirvana or maybe Pink Floyd.
ReplyDeleteThe only "known" band I've seen live is The Human League.
Ramones!!
ReplyDeleteElvis. I wanna be one of those screaming idiots in the front row, preferably at his '68 comeback tour. <3 *Swoon*
