One of the leading priests in the Catholic Church says the missing remains of the 15 year old teen missing for years and believed to buried in a mafia member's tomb in the Vatican was kidnapped years ago and forced into having sex at Vatican sex parties. Hey, it sounds crazy until you realize how many other kids the priests had sex with over the years. In case you have not heard about this case, the teen lived on Vatican property and had a class in Rome. She left but never came home and some people claim she is buried in the tomb of a mafia man who is buried inside the Vatican. Yeah, the mafia in a Vatican tomb. That part is true. The priest who made this claim is the leading priest on exorcists but he is 85 and has also said yoga is the work of the devil. He obviously had trouble getting that crane pose exactly right.

While I can believe just about any depravity of the Vatican, Amorth is a long-standing loon and nothing like a credible source. Among other things he believes: that Harry Potter is teh evulz, and that he has personally cast out thousands of evil spirits from people who have been possessed by demons. He has also made some other bonkers statements lately, which I can't be bothered to look up right now. Bottom line: if Amorth says it, it's almost certainly crap.
Isn't 15 a little old for the priesthood? They are Mormons in that they prefer you Bring 'em Young.

He may be bonkers, but that doesn't mean what he's saying isn't true. He's crazy enough to talk, and the tomb is scheduled to be opened soon from what I read.

I don't think this has to do with religion as much as it does the "good 'ol boys" clubs that exclude or diminish women, and focus on money and power. And depravity soon follows when they realize those aren't enough. Powerful men abusing the weak is nothing new.

BUTTTT the undeniable truth is the reason threads like this become anti-organized religion quickly is the examples of what has been done in the name of all powerful religions like Catholicism (and many more) to those less powerful is innumerable.

Just read this morning on Newser that there were bones found in the coffin that "did not belong" to that mobster guy. They are waiting on DNA tests.
I think a person of any faith or non faith gets very upset when someone tells them that what they believe in is wrong. As much as an entire religion will be judged on the wrongdoings of a few individuals, atheists are often judged the same way based on the really aggressive ones who claim that religious people are stupid or have somehow been duped. It's something both "sides" feel extremely strongly about, but nobody - NOBODY - takes the time to actually listen to what the other person has to say. I have yet to see an intelligent,respectful discussion about religion. It's the nature of the subject, I suppose.

ReplyDeleteI am being really careful to not express my disdain for religion in my comments on this thread. Because it isnt about one single person's opinions. My feelings dont weigh more than anyone else's. I just wanted to express that I think questioning ANY institution that holds such power over deciding ideologies that masses of people follow is always A GOOD THING. I just believe we should never blindly follow any doctrine, espeically when the "isms" are involved.
To the blogger who asked semi- aggressively what gives me the authority to decide on which isms I'm talking about- all I have to say is I'm an atheist, grew up in a Jewish and Christian household and even I know both the Torah and the Bible are inundated with sexist shit.
And you can see that simply by scanning the bible, let alone reading it cover to cover. Regardless though, it seems highly ignorant of someone to deny religion has had a history of oppression and has at one time or another in different parts of the world been used by people to perpetuate the isms. And sometimes the Church has backed some of those people up. Dont believe me? Take a Holocaust and Genocide seminar and get back to me about how "helpful" the Pope was to the Jews during Hitler's reign.

ReplyDeleteI was raised Catholic, and I still believe there's something more out there. I like the tenets, the way they preach to be nice to your fellow man.
But recent events have made it VERY hard to believe in the institution of the Church. The pedophilia, that was condoned. The priests were not punished, just transferred. Abuse of power over people in the fifties and sixties - my mother in law has some fine stories about their local priest - things like asking when the next one would arrive right after a miscarriage - my father in law finally kicked him out for groping his wife.
Blaming the victims. Castrating (yes, that really happened here, in Holland) of boys with "gay tendencies" in the fifties (most likely, the abuse victims). Without asking their parents first. There's just too much horror there to ever contemplate a connection with the church anymore. My kids can do communion if they want to. But I will not force them, and they may believe as they please. Personally, I'll find my own way of praying. I'm done.
/rant over. Sorry about that.

ReplyDeleteThe fact that the source for the story is very suspect, and the reporting, here and in the original, was inaccurate and incomplete, only serves to show how easy it is to let emotions, contempt and ignorance, dictate reality. An objective journalist would have mentioned that the source was suspect and that the grave had already been dug up and found to not contain the girl's remains. In other words, an objective journalist would not have written this story. But no, instead it's a jumping off point to talk about how the Church, like, totally sux, man.
Atheists are such proselytizers these days. Atheists, no one is making you join any church, believe in God, follow an ideology that you don't agree with. No one's proselytizing you. Frankly, no one really cares if you are an atheist. But YOU feel free to sanctimoniously lecture everyone about your ideology, your opinion, your church. It's really funny.
Because maybe you should consider the enormous extent to which nations and ideologies where religion has been suppressed have caused death and destruction, to say nothing of the various 'isms, just in the last century. Maybe you should consider the fact that atheists, like every other group of humanity, have racists and sexists and other thoroughly nasty people, in their midst. I'm Catholic, and it's very gratifying to read the many commenters who have the charity to distinguish the good from bad elements. The Church isn't different from any other organization comprised of people who individually make their own choices. When scandals erupt, I remind myself that one of the original 12 not only betrayed Christ, Christ let him. I don't pretend to understand, but it stabilizes my faith so I keep on believing. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteIt's sad that people can/have taken religion's original intent that was so good and then manipulate it to their own agenda. The issue as Jasmine and Maja indicated isn't really religion but an abuse of power and money that perpetuates that abuse. Catholicism suffers not from some bad PR but some bad people. But, I thnk I can distill from most comments here, that everyone agrees there have been too many bad people associated with (insert religion here). Is it the doctrine? Is it the sheer number of followers hence more bad situations? Is it purely because it is patriarchal? Is it $$ motivated? It would be interesting to uncover why.

It's nice to see that some of the posters on here don't feel the need to lump all of us together as supporters of child molesters. It really isn't that way. I just wish people would respect differences on here. I don't care if you agree with it or not. I respect an individual's right to not believe in anything. That doesn't seem to be reciprocated.

I can tell you that I rolled into the church I attend, unmarried (at the time) and had my daughter baptized. No one said a word and I received a warm welcome. My husband isn't even Catholic. Had my experience been different, I can't say I would hate all Catholics, but I probably wouldn'tbe one.

ReplyDeleteAs for the Vatican(and I too was raised Catholic and have been to the Vatican numerous times)my beef has always been, if Jesus was about feeding those hungry, sheltering those without shelter, then, why (and this was in my third grade mind, circa 1983), why was Vatican city the wealthiest entity on the planet, with the pope even using a gold toilet, and yet I am filling milk box mini banks for the starving children of Ethiopia.
That was my stance in Third grade, and that is my stance now. God and a relationship with God is SINGULAR. It is between the individual and God. The Vatican is not a representation of God. It stands for the opposite. Monetary wealth. And the two can not ever go hand in hand.
I obviously believe this story and believe this child was lost, as so many have been, to the higher up powers that be.
