Avengers Will Be New All Time Weekend Winner

Although Avengers missed the record for a first day opening that is held by the last installment of Harry Potter, they will break the all-time opening weekend record. The box office should come in at over $200M which means they will be making Avengers movies every year until we die and then every other year after we are all dead. Avengers opened in most parts of the world last week so it is already approaching $1B dollars in worldwide ticket sales and has an outside shot at beating Avatar for the top grossing film of all time. You think James Cameron likes that? James Cameron loves having the number one movie of all-time. He chants it to himself as he falls asleep at night.

  1. I promised someone I'd wait and see it with them so I have to wait until NEXT SATURDAY to go! Dying to see this, did anyone go already?

  2. Dear Joss Whedon

Be careful, my friend. James Cameron is not happy with you right now. I would grow eyes in the back of my head if I were you.

@EmEyeKay - I'm waiting for the crowds to die down. I can't wait to see it as well.

  7. I know Hwood likes to trumpet out how much money such and such movie made, and how it made the most money out of any movie of all time. But ticket prices have risen drastically since the Great Depression. LOL I still think if they take infation into account, Star Wars is probably the top winner.

  9. We saw it and loved it. It was pretty funny. I'd lille to see it again just to catch some of the quips I missed from Himmmm, er RDJ. People were laughing a lot.

  10. @Wee S: believe me, I thought about it (am thinking about it right now!) - but I promised. He'll know, he can read me like a book, unfortunately.

It's so much fun to see a movie like this on opening weekend, especially at night. Hoping the crowd will still be crazy and fun next weekend.

  11. Three little letters....RDJ

  12. BTW, I am so on team Captain America. He is way better in this movie than The Captain America movie. He is very fine. However, there was other fine men to look at (RDJ, Thor), too.

  13. Avengers slaughter the hunger games. I'm lovin' it

  14. I saw it in 3D at midnight showing and I thought it was great. It was funny, had action and I thought all the characters got equal time. Plus, Jeremy Renner (my reason for going) looked so sexy. ;)It was a well-done, summer, fun blockbuster.

However, as a Nolan fangirl, I think TDKR is gonna match or top this opening weekend. Nolan's Batman films have action, but are also visceral, realistic and character-based. So sad this will be the final film, but I get why he only wanted a trilogy and I think it's gonna end with a major bang. :)

  15. @Em you have better willpower than me, kudos! We have a bank holiday weekend and I'm quite bored so my options are: go out on the piss or go to the cinema to see Avengers/Cabin in the Woods/21 Jump Street. Quite keen on Cabin as I'm on a Joss kick - has anyone seen it?

  16. Ooh - I forgot about Jeremy Renner. He is fine, too.

  17. Sorry about my grammar and typing. I'm on my iPad and I have some problems!

  18. @Wee, I haven't seen Cabin. As for 21 Jump Street, the CDAN commenters were a mixed bag. People either loved it or had zero interest in seeing it.

Enjoy! I'm out to the beach, myself, it's a gorgeous day here (finally!).

  19. Watched the movie with my 11 year old son in a packed house. Tons of fun. I think Hulk stole the movie and some of the scenes were so funny I could not hear the dialog because everybody was laughing and applauding. Loved seeing Loki get Rag dolled and loved the fight scenes. Fantastic move cannot wait to see it again.

  20. i saw it:it's fun but a few long and more Stark-Baner show!(Hulk has 2 really funny scenes in the final action scene)

  21. We are excited to see it but are tied up with family stuff maybe next week.

I'd watch all the sequels as well.

Cameron needs a little ding in his ego.

  22. its so nice that it happened to joss whedon, who is masterfully talented, not a part of the 'in crowd' and who just seems like a nice. guy.

  23. I have been a Joss fan since Buffy.... the man is a genius...

I saw Cabin in the Woods - VERY Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon humor/story... my date didn't get it, but he hadnt seen other Joss stuff. I loved it

  24. Adjusting for inflation, I think Gone with the Wind's on top with SW in second, but any measuring stick you use is going to be flawed. Just too many variables would factor into it.

I'll be cheering for this one to overtake Avatar because I like thinking that James Cameron will cry himself to sleep every night if it does happen.

  25. My hubby & son are super hero fanatics & dragged me to see this on Friday (in 3D)...omg I loved it!! It's so funny & so much eye candy...hello Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, RDJ, Jeremy Renner, ScarJo...Mark Ruffalo & Sam L. Jackson aren't my cup of tea looks wise but as actors they r awesome too, idk who plAyed Loki but he was amazing too...everyone needs to see this movie & again I had zero desire to see it & now I want it on DVD when it comes out

  26. So does this mean we're going to have to put up with another James Cameron movie? Sigh.

Just checked imdb. Doesn't seem to be for a while. Battle Angel sounds like a retelling of Dark Angel.

  27. It was absolutely Fantastic. Entertaining, funny, & smart on steroids. I think it will rival Star Wars in geek culture going forward.

  28. To Anyone:

Now do I need to have watched any of the original movies like Captain America or any of them to enjoy this? Or can I watch it cold?

  29. I loved the movie. I love all Joss Whedon's work. But I do wish one two-word line put in for the laugh had been edited out. This line will prevent my superhero loving transracially adopted daughter from seeing this movie until she's older.

  30. @renoblondee i had a marathon last week because i thought i needed to watch them all before, and i guess it is better bc you know a little more background on them but not really necessary great movie either way! can't wait to go see it again

  31. I can't wait to see it, but will wait until crowds die down. The hubby & I are lucky enough to live in downtown Cleveland (never thought I'd say those words, "lucky" and "Cleveland" together), and just down the street from where they filmed a few of the very big action scenes. Having to go through security to get to my apartment for three weeks was a bit of a pain, but they were super nice.

  32. I believe Gone with the Wind is the most per capita and Star Wars is the most per ticket sales.

  33. Serena Skye...

Chris Pine wasn't in The Avengers.

  34. I know it's CGI and all, but this pic of RDJ is hawt!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. @reno I just did a quick Wikipedia scan of the movie plots before going. Although after seeing this movie and loving it, I want to see Thor and the Iron Man movies.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I went today and I am usually not a fan of special effects. I would have enjoyed myself without the eye candy. Go!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Saw it in 3D today. LOVED it! What a load of fun! The mens! They were all so hot, but Jeremy Renner did especially funny things to my insides. The Chris's? Perfect. RDJ was fabulous, and wanted to take Mark Ruffalo home and cuddle him, even as The Hulk. Also - saw Scarjo's late night interview. The gal has personality, and she fit right in, in this movie. The chemistry was great between all the characters. Loki has to be the sexiest evil guy ever. Well done, Joss Whedon!

    ReplyDelete
  38. BTW, this was the first time I'd ever seen Jeremy Renner in a movie - thought he was overrated. Until now. The guy definitely has "It".

    ReplyDelete
  39. I can't wait to see this tomorrow. Word of warning...STAY PAST THE CREDITS!!!! THERE IS A HOOK AT THE END!!!

Marvel sent me an e-mail saying to do this. Yeah I'm a big geeky fangirl.

  40. We're doing the same thing as EmEyeKay and a coupla others: waiting for a week or so until it dies down, and checking out an early show on Sunday, which in my experience has been a terrific time to check out the blockbusters. With digital projection prevalent in a lot of places now, there's less urgency to see the film fresh before it gets wrecked by emulsion stripping.

Saw Cabin In The Woods about a month ago, mainly on the recommendation of my fiancee, who Loves Joss Whedon and is a huge Buffy fan. I thought it was good/not great, but there is a wild WTF moment about 15 mins before the end that makes it worth checking out.

  41. 15-year old saw it in Lyon, France last weekend (he is an exchange student.) Said it was a grest movie, and he only understood half of the dialogue!

  42. @Wee S - Cabin in the Woods is great! I highly recommend checking it out.

I saw Avengers at a midnight showing on Thursday and it was spectacular! Joss Whedon did a fantastic job and each character's screen time was well balanced. It didn't feel like any one character got more play than the other. RDJ was fabulous (of course) and had some of the best one-liners. Mark Ruffalo was perfection as Bruce Banner and the dynamic between The Hulk and Thor was hilarious.

@Chef M - Was it the line Thor delivers regarding Loki? I wouldn't have imagined that would be offensive to someone who is adopted, given the context in which it's delivered. Though things like that are contextual to each viewer as well, I suppose.

  43. James Cameron just talked in an interview about how he's doing Avatar 2 and 3 and 4. It figures.

  44. Oh, and Loki/Hiddleston is freaking irresistible. I have such a huge crush on him.

  45. I saw this on Monday. It was good. Nothing spectacular but I wasn't bored at any point.

I think it helped that it was full of hotties.
