9 Year Old Boy Gives Disney Trip To Soldier's Family

A 9 year old boy who lives in Massachusetts started a Facebook page where he traded up from a small toy soldier to an all expenses paid Disney vacation including airfare. The page, called Soldier For A Soldier was just started back in February. On memorial Day, Brendan Haas surprised the family of a soldier who had been killed in Afghanistan with the trip to Disney World. Wow. That is one impressive kid. When I was 9, I played with toy soldiers, but that was about as far as my thinking went.

  4. Stuff that you can't make up :

The soldier left behind a wife and a 2-year-old daughter named Liberty Hope.

    PS:
The boy is from Kingston, MA and the soldier's family is from Duxbury.I used to know those towns well.

  5. I love this story. I'm so ashamed to admit that I wondered if his parents really set this up. Gosh, when did I become so cynical?? I have a hard time fathoming a 9 year old coming up with this trading scheme, and this is from the aunt of a 9-year old niece who has the biggest heart around and creates care packages for homeless people. Either way, it's a lovely story and whether it is 100% his idea or whether his parents were a big part of it ultimately doesn't matter because it will make such a positive impact on the lives of everyone touched by his generosity. Bravo!

  7. This is a great story!

@Carolyn They had an episode of Curious George about trading. He might have gotten the idea from that.

  12. Well, if the parents did come up with the idea, at least they credit the child and not trying to glorify themselves.

  15. I live in this area, we also have those two kids who started out collecting and distributing food at Thanksgiving --and now it's this huge charity.

We got some good kids around here! Well done, Brendan!

  18. Of course when I read the full article it made me tear up. I've become such a softy since I had kids! Speaking of being an emotional mess, have you guys seen any of those Values, Foundation for a Better Life commercials? I always catch them when I'm at the gym, and those get me every time :'/ (Did I just make up my own emoticon? I only know how to make smiley faces)

  19. What a sweet, sensitive little soul.
I think the parents deserve some of the credit. I can't imagine most nine year olds who'd be willing to give up the trip so willingly. Maybe Disney will let him go anyway.
