It is the part every actress in Hollywood wanted and somehow Nicole Kidman managed to land the role of Grace Kelly in the new movie, Grace Of Monaco. The movie takes place over the course of one year from December 1961 to November 1962 after Grace had been a princess for six years. The script has been on the black list as one of the best scripts not yet produced and every actress wanted the role. I'm not sure I see Nicole in the role. They look alike, but all I see in my head is no one going to see it because she is in it.
Whether you like her as a person or not, she is a really great actress and has the Oscar to show for it. She'll be amazing.

Why wouldn't people see it because she is in it? I disagree--I think she is generally very well-liked as an actress.

I think she's a very good choice for the role.
In terms of appearance, I think Charlize Theron also would have been a good candidate for this role.

ReplyDeleteI actually like Nicole as an actress as well but I wish this had happened several years ago; she's so botoxed now that she's not a great fit for Grace's natural beauty. Charlize would be a much better choice at this point in time; Nicole maybe 5-10 years ago.

I think Nicole will be very good in this role. While Charlize is very beautiful and does look like Grace Kelly, Nicole is the right age to play her at this point in Kelly's life. I think Kidman's perceived iciness will work well here. In her day, Kelly had the same reputation. Remember it wasn't until years after her death that Kelly's wild side was revealed.

ReplyDeleteI could see Charlize far more in the part. It took me a long time to recover from Monster to like Charlize again. She was too good in that movie, it was disturbing.
I'm another one who would have preferred Charlize. Nicole is too old and has never had the caliber of beauty for such a role. Hope she does a good job, but not expecting much.

Charlize would've been good as well. Nicole has that cool sort of glamour Grace did, but I couldn't see her sleeping with all of her leading me. Charlize would've been great since she has that cool sensuality - and the cool part is by virtue of her being blonde and perfect. Grace Kelly was the queen of the image of the cool, sensual blonde.
I think she'll be wonderful as Grace. Nicole is a very good actress.

So in terms of that- I think they were spot on.
Charlize has the more lively face and figure for Grace though.
At this point Kidman is like a pale frozen pixie stick with dyed blonde hair- she's truly botoxing herself out of a profession.
I have never seen so much love for NK before, who knew.

I dont think I would watch this movie no mtter who was cast as GK though, so not really ahope big deal to me.

Nicole, from her Scio experience, will probably be great in the scene where she has Satanists pierce her clitorus during a Solar Temple ritual. I'm assuming that will be in the film, no?

ReplyDeleteI just watched "God is the Bigger Elvis" on HBO. It's a documentary short that was Oscar-nominiated (it lost) about actress Dolores Hart becoming a nun. Very interesting. She was incredibly beautiful and she was touted as the next Grace Kelly. She gave Elvis his first on-screen kiss. She left her Hollywood career when she was only 26.
ReplyDeleteAs Grace Kelly was 33 in 1962 and Nicole will be 45 I would say she's a nit long in the tooth to be playing her. Regardless how much admiration one might have in her talent, it's just as bad as having a 35 yr old playint he mother of a 24 yr old, or a Japanese person playing a Chinese person or putting blackface on to be African American. There is so much talent that would be a better choice in their casting.

ReplyDeleteNicole Kidman used to be an amazing actress. If you haven't seen Dogville or Fur (starring RDJ as well), then do. She was also wonderful in The Hours (which has some of the most pitch-perfect writing I've ever seen).

While I think Charlize would have been a bit too warm, or sultry, for the Kelley role, I think it's a ridiculous casting choice to put Kidman in the role.
January Jones can't act for shit. As bad as I think Nicole is going to be (thanks to the botox), JJ would be FAR worse.

She was sweet and human and exuded that comfortable warmth that most Aussies have. I really liked her. I don't know what life has done to her, nor do I want to know, but I still wish her well.
ReplyDeleteIt should be someone who naturally, without trying, exudes elegance and wealth, without appearing too cold/snooty. Too bad Grace's granddaughter Charlotte, doesn't act, she has ALL the right qualities. Maybe they should look for a European actress that can do a convincing American accent.

ReplyDeleteHonestly, in my mind, the one actress who really looks like Grace Kelly, and who is a fantastic actress (whether you like her or not) is Evan Rachel Wood. She is the only one I would ever go see in that role. Grace Kelly was like ice on fire. Nicole Kidman is just cold like a fish. And Charlize is gorgeous but I just can't see her for this either. I hope Evan gets the chance to play Grace one day.
