ReplyDeleteI thought it was very cute and the whole interview was very well done. Jimmy was obviously having the time of his life.
ReplyDeleteI was really disappointed by the interview. It was too policy-oriented and not enough personality. Jimmy would ask questions that were funny, and it would turn into policy. I know it's an election year, but I would have liked the interview to have been a bit more fun.

ReplyDeleteI personally just don't feel that any American President should be on any talk show. I think it's not very classy. My personal opinion.
ReplyDelete@ Crila16, I kind of agree with your point, but the youth vote is very important to Obama so I understand why he's going on these shows during an election year. If it weren't an election year, then I think it would be inappropriate.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Crila. I still cringe when I think about Bill Clinton being asked the boxers or briefs question on some MTV show...so inappropriate. OMG that was 20 yrs ago.
ReplyDeleteYeah Audrey. I do agree with you. I just also noticed that he's been on Letterman, The View (3 times), The Daily Show, the Today show, and The Oprah Winfrey Show...and it wasn't an election year. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Jimmy Fallon show and was on it myself a year ago...but I just feel it's no place for the American President.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch those shows (only see clips that are highlighted online), so I didn't realize he was on during non-election years. On one hand, I do agree it doesn't seem appropriate, but perhaps it helps him communicate to those that don't watch the nightly news or read about politics. I don't mean to be leaning over backwards to defend him. I guess I'm just trying to reconcile my feelings of "the President must maintain dignity" vs. the reality of today's world where if you want to get your word out there, the NYT is no longer king, it's Letterman...

ReplyDeleteI hope it is obvious that I'm not being literal to the point of "if the American people are in a crack house in Thailand then the President should also be in a crack house in Thailand." I mean that if going on a talk show, election year or not, is a way to speak to people about re-election, or to explain/promote a bill or law, then that IS what the President should do. A President is not above his or her own people.
Jimmy Fallon's show = fine
Town Hall Meeting and Wet T-shirt contest at Ernie's Bar and Quick Lube, not so much. Perspective, folks.
President Obama wasn't on shows during non-election years just to drop by and say hey. He was talking about proposed legislation and answering general questions. He was doing his job.
ReplyDeleteIf you actually want to talk to people you go where the people are. I am very impressed that President Obama gave time to daytime television and the women who watch it. The short version: he acknowledges the importance of women. A lot of elected officials are specifically NOT doing that these days.
Yeah...sorry. @ Jennifer H...You're entiteld to your opinion, but I don't think it's appropriate. It cheapens the title as leader of America in my opinion...and I stress my opinion. I also didn't like it when Clinton did it. I don't want my president to be my friend. I want him to be my leader who I look up to and respect. Just like my boss at work. Again...my opinion.
ReplyDeleteCrila, I know that I'm entitled to my opinion, but thanks. I'm not sure who's equating being friends with the President (?) to appreciating a President who is willing to make an effort at reaching people instead of depending on misleading sound bytes and partisan pundits (for and against) to get his message across.
ReplyDeleteTo say you don't think a President should appear on "The View" is probably not an uncommon sentiment. My question though is why would a President NOT want to appear on "The View?"(Or Fallon, Leno, Letterman, etc.)

ReplyDeleteJennifer H. - All presidents give misleading sound bytes. Actually at this point in the media landscape, everyone does, it's all about reading between the lines.
It is interesting to me that people place weight in their voting decision based on that person being funny or likable on a late-night talk show.
AND That's why I no longer work in media.
