Your Turn
So, are you a glass is half full kind of person, or a glass is half empty kind of person? Simple question, but let me give you an example of something. Going back to that Mega Millions post I wrote, I recall seeing early on in this run up that someone had matched all the numbers except the Mega and that person lived in Orange County. The jackpot was something like $125M at the time and they won $600K for matching all but one number. Would you be happy winning $600K, or would you be complaining the rest of your life that were thisclose to winning $125M?
I'd be thankful and keep my mouth shut, but every now and again, I would think to myself, "What if?"
ReplyDeleteat this point i'd be happy for any free money lol
ReplyDeleteBoth.
ReplyDeleteThe 600k would be wonderful, but I'd still be saying "I was *THIS* close!!"
I would have loved to have one the 600K. I think I'm a "well, my glass could be emptier kind of person." So, I'd say, "Hey, I won 600K -- it could've been worse, I could've won nothing!"
ReplyDeleteI co-sign Merlin.
ReplyDeleteProbably be thrilled 'til the money was gone, then disappointed that I missed the 125M.
ReplyDeleteI'd be more than happy with the 600k.
ReplyDeleteHappy, but then again I'm young enough to where 600K would significantly improve my financial positioning for the future.
ReplyDeleteAny jackpot is fine. If the winner is smart w/ the $$ then you can guarantee the sort of happiness that the winnings offer.
ReplyDeleteI am largely a glass-half full person, my occasional sarcasm notwithstanding. If someone else had won instead of me, I'd be happy for them.
Jackpot should be well north of $500 million by Friday, 3/30/2012.
Half empty for the loss.
ReplyDeleteThrilled to win $600K!!
ReplyDeleteExtremely happy I'm sure with a twinge of 'damn it!. Def. happy though so I'll say I'm a glass half full person.
ReplyDeleteMostly half full with a few sips to empty.
ReplyDeleteHalf full and happy to have won the 600K with a smidge of "so close~!"
ReplyDeleteIf I was handed $600K I would not whine about it.
ReplyDeleteYou know how could you be bitter about winning anything? If fate sprinkles it on your head from nowhere - who would complain? A lot of sad, angry people I suppose. Having $600 grand would take a load of stress off of the people I love - that works for me.
ReplyDelete600K would change my life completely and I'd be very happy. After the 150K to pay off my son's college tuition, my house and bills, I'd still be happy to spend the rest in a comfortable way.
ReplyDeleteI have never needed much to be happy in life. I'm a total half-full person.
I'm a glass half full person. I usually don't win anything, so $600K would be awesome. In fact, less people would bother me if I won $600K than if I won $125M. And I would make that $600K work for me.
ReplyDeleteI won $500 on a scratch-off card once and still talk about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you half-full people, I am an optimist and always try to find the silver lining in challenging situations.
ReplyDeleteMy mom (self-help enthusiast, UGH) taught me that self-talk is important and if you walk around thinking "I'm a loser" all day it will have a negative impact (seems obvious).
I'd be thrilled with the 600K and would probably shrug off the extra number.
I was born a glass half empty person, and forced myself to become the glass half full kind of person. It's a much nicer way to go through life. I can't imagine complaining about $600K! Hell, an extra $100 would put a smile on my face. I also try (stressing the word try,) not to focus on the what if's. I'm more of a it is what it is. So I change the things I have control over, and the things I don't can just bite my arse.
ReplyDeleteDef half full, and everytime I buy a ticket I think I'll win...
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy and bitching too... or maybe just happy to be bitching?
ReplyDeleteI got one number on several lines, but that won't get me anything. I'm no quitter so I'll be buying more tickets before the next draw.
Having the "what if I won" conversations can be very interesting. I certainly had an interesting discussion with a family member yesterday. Things get dicey when you ask "How much would you share?"
*sits in corner by myself, drinks from half-empty glass*
ReplyDeleteThat $600K would be more than enough to pay off my house and leave plenty of money to save/invest. So I would consider it a good win.
ReplyDeleteI'd take the $600,000 and run. Sure you are always going to wish you'd gotten it all, but the reality is that $600,000 is enough to change your life if you are careful about how you invest it. And besides, the smaller amount might be small enough not to ruin your relationships with others as compared to what winning a bigger lottery might do. It's enough to stay happy yet grounded.
ReplyDeleteEither you are one number short of $125MM or you are one number above $10!
ReplyDeleteI would be more than happy with the 600K!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am a "glass is always full" - kind of person. Even if it only has a little bit of water, it's still filled to the top with air :D
I’d be happy with $1000.--. I’m definitely a glass-half-full type of person.
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely be happy with the cash. Although many years ago, I played the New York State lottery. I had four numbers correct. My other two numbers? Each were one off the numbers that were chosen. You want to talk about banging your head against the wall and saying "What if?"
ReplyDeleteAbout 10 years ago I used to play the lottery every week. Used numbers that came to me in a dream. I played faithfully for over a year and a half...those same numbers. Then I stopped... got tired of losing :) You can guess what happened next - four months later those numbers hit for 42 million dollars. For the longest time I kept those losing tickets to remind myself of how stupid I really was...lol.
ReplyDeleteOnce in a while, when I'm struggling to make a car payment or dreaming of a vacation on a beach - I think about those four lousy months away from 42 million :) Then I just shake it off....lol...life goes on :)
That is a woohoo moment.
ReplyDeleteHalf full definitely. The odds of matching even 5 numbers are so astronomical (greater than the odds of being struck by lightening) you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I'd be thrilled to win the $600K and never think twice about what could have been. That's just loser thinking.
ReplyDelete*Hums "Loser" by Beck to myself*
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy as hell for the $600g
ReplyDeleteI must be half empty because I'm doing the math and it's only 300k after the government gets its share. In LA that's not enough to be a one bedroom condominium.
ReplyDeleteEven if the $600K was before taxes, I could still pay off my house, pay off the credit card, and have enough money left to buy a new car, so I'd be more than happy with that amount.
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy Happy
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy with the 600K.
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't waste your life crying over what you never had.
I also believe that too much money is nearly as bad as not enough money.
Half full and thankful!
ReplyDeleteBeing as poor as I am, and as poor as I always have been, I'd be ecstatic at the thought of winning 600k! I'll never be the kind of person that wants a 50 bedroom house with 4 pools.
ReplyDeleteglass half full. people tell me i am the most optimistic person they know. i'd rather concentrate on the good than the bad ANY DAY. if i won $600k i would be thrilled. what would i do w/ $125 million??? no idea. what's the saying, "you can only wear one pair of pant at a time"? something like that.
ReplyDeleteI would be especially happy with 600k because we all know that the people who millions blow it and wind up miserable. Then when I thought no one was looking I would cry because I was SO CLOSE!
ReplyDeleteI would be thrilled if I got $50K. I recently was pretty much forced into retiring, and found myself going from an annual income of nearly $60K to one of under $15K. I had some savings, but I seriously lie awake nights worrying that I'll outlast the savings. I'd be grateful for anything I got, $600K would put me on easy street, and buy some stuff I'd like to have but know I never will...like my own house, etc.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding?? I have debts. I'd be greatful and happy with anything the lotto god/godess throws my way. Heck! I recently won $2. I was thrilled to put that $$$ on another ticket.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to win 3 bucks on a lotto ticket.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! i am happy when i win 5$. So i'd be happy to win 600K
ReplyDeleteI tend to be a glass half full person, but I'd be A-OK with $600k.
ReplyDeleteI still think it's awesome that I won $50 from a Pepsi bottlecap game back when I was a kid. Hell, yes, I'd thank my lucky stars for the $600K! Anyway, the mega millions would probably end up causing more trouble than they're worth. Hell, I might even end up a Republican with that much money, and then I'd have to shoot myself.
ReplyDeleteWould be thrilled with the $600k and wouldn't even think twice. It would solve every money problem and I wouldn't have to deal with the headaches of millions and crazy people.
ReplyDeleteThe question reminds me of this Janeane Garofalo quote (it was my email signature for awhile):
ReplyDeleteMy glass is always half empty. And cracked... and I just cut my lip on it. And chipped a tooth.
